Miel de châtaignier is known as Chestnut honey which has a tinge of bitterness. Its distinctive aroma and dark brown (almost red colour) often seduces many because of its bittersweet taste that lingers on the tongue. It is said that darker the honey, the stronger the smell. It is great for those who dislike sweetness but rather prefer the bitter and strong flavour. It is not recommended for sweetening but it is great for baking!

Miel de châtaignier is originated in France where there are hundreds of chestnut forests. Bees collect nectar from the flowers of chestnut tree and the honey formed tends to quickly thicken and is colourless, transparent and almost odourless.

The research shows that it helps to improve the blood circulation and is recognised for its healing properties. Rich in minerals and iron, Vitamin B and C, Miel de châtaignier can soothe the sore throat or cure cough, cold, bronchitis and common respiratory illness. Not only that, it has antibacterial and antiseptic properties that can be applied on external wounds and ulcers.

It is believed that dark chestnut honey could prevent cancer.

The chestnut tree grows at the height of 30-35 m (114 feet) and the leaves are oblong-shaped measuring in length from 15 to 30cm and width from 5 to 10cm. It has jagged edged leaves and its overhanging crown could reach the diameter of 18-20m. Chestnut trees grow well in the fertile soil of average humidity and it does not like dry or calcareous soil.
