<title>The four &quot;alphabets&quot; of Japanese.</title>

<![CDATA[ <strong>Hiragana:</strong> this "alphabet" is used for difficult kanji, words without any kanji, particles, suffixes, and verb and adjective inflections.<br><br><strong>Kanji:</strong> Chinese characters that make up the bulk of the vocabulary of the Japanese language. It is made up of nouns, adjectives, and verbs. Each kanji has multiple pronunciations attached to it.<br><br><strong>Katakana:</strong> the "alphabet" used for foreign loan words, scientific words, onomatopoeia, emphasis (similar to using italics for emphasis), and sometimes food as well.<br><br><strong>Romaji:</strong> latin letters, essentially. There are at least four different schools of thought as to how to write romaji. According to TextFugu, it is useless to learn and will only serve as a handicap to learning Japanese down the road.
