Producida por Pixar Animation Studios y estrenada en Disney+, la animación dirigida por Pete Docter narra la historia de Joe, un profesor de música que sueña con dar un concierto de jazz.

Cuando al pianista por fin se le presenta la oportunidad de estar en el escenario junto a una reconocida saxofonista, la muerte lo embarca hacia un lugar donde las almas aprenden sus dones antes de vivir en la Tierra.

Ahí conoce a 22, un alma rebelde que debe recibir su mentoría para llegar a la Tierra. En esta aventura, Joe se enfrenta a un nuevo cuestionamiento: ¿Cuál es el sentido de la vida?

Y aunque la película no aborda de forma directa ninguna circunstancia de la pandemia, para la psicóloga Martha Patricia Zavala es una reflexión muy adecuada a las circunstancias actuales.

“Nos está hablando de los pares: la vida y la muerte. Tener presente la muerte para disfrutar más la vida”, expresó la especialista.

“En la pandemia, con las muertes cercanas y la enfermedad en riesgo, con la muerte rondando, nos debe llevar a reflexionar y aprovechar la vida”.

EL PROPÓSITO

Uno de los temas principales de la película es la búsqueda de un propósito de vida, destacó Rosalinda Ballesteros, directora del Instituto de Ciencias de la Felicidad de la Universidad TecMilenio. Y en el trayecto se descubren cosas de uno mismo y de los demás

“El propósito de vida es aterrizar en la historia de cada uno eso que va a hacer que nuestra vida trascienda”, dijo Ballesteros.

“Pueden suceder muchas cosas fuera de nuestro control, entonces (el propósito) no es punto fijo, sino una actitud, una disposición de hacer con mis talentos lo mejor que pueda para mí y para los demás”.

Por ejemplo, en el caso de la película, Joe tiene a la música como motivación interior y la vive a través de la enseñanza; y el concierto al que quiere llegar es una motivación externa.

“Encontrar esa motivación interior que normalmente está en algo que nos apasiona y estemos dispuestos a hacer aunque nos cueste mucho trabajo, es lo que nos puede servir de guía”, explicó Ballesteros.

LO COTIDIANO Y EL DESEO

Disfrutar y valorar los pequeños detalles y la vida cotidiana es otro de los puntos importantes que transmite el filme.

“El bienestar psicológico, emocional y la satisfacción con la vida tiene dos componentes: sentir que somos parte de algo más grande que nosotros, que es el significado de la vida, pero también disfrutar el día a día”, reflexionó Ballesteros.

“Este gusto por vivir al ver las hojas de los árboles caer, sentir el viento, recordar momentos placenteros con las personas que quieres, tener una conversación con un amigo. Son importantes para generar un balance emocional positivo”.

En lo simple y cotidiano, resaltó Zavala, ahí también se puede encontrar la felicidad.

“La felicidad es la realización de los deseos de la infancia. Si nosotros recordamos, nuestros deseos no eran materiales ni excesivos”, continuó la psicóloga experta en niños y adolescentes.

Cuando eres niño te hacen felices un cono de nueve, un borrador nuevo, correr en el parque. El adulto puede recuperar esos momentos felices de la infancia si se detiene; la pandemia nos hizo detenernos y revalorar lo que nos gusta”.

Entre valorar los detalles y definir un propósito, ¿cómo no quedarse estancado o frustrarse si las metas cambian con las circunstancias?, como lo aborda la película.

“El deseo humano cambia constantemente, nosotros queremos algo que nos mantiene con vida. No se trata de objetos, se trata de formas en las que uno consigue ser feliz”, respondió Zavala.

Por ejemplo, ahondó, en el caso de los maestros, buscan crecer su conocimiento preparándose, leyendo más, asistiendo a cursos, y eso va alimentando su propósito. O hay personas que les gusta hacer nuevos amigos, conocer nuevas culturas.

Esa búsqueda los mantiene vivos, planteó Zavala.

“Porque lo que se busca es estar viviendo constantemente cosas nuevas”.

The entertainment industry has been rocked by the coronavirus pandemic.

Big blockbusters that were slated to arrive in theaters in 2020 have, for the most part, been pushed to 2021 and those that haven’t have been used to pad major studios’ streaming services.

With Covid cases continuing to spike, many movie theaters across the country have closed once again. As of last weekend, only about 34% of the 6,000 cinemas in North America were open to the public.

This led Disney to place its newest Pixar feature “Soul” on Disney+ and AT&T to release “Wonder Woman 1984″ in theaters and on HBO Max on the same day. Both films are being made available to the public on Christmas Day.

How do I watch “Soul?
There are three ways to subscribe for a Disney+ subscription:

A month-to-month subscription that costs $6.99 per month, but will rise to $7.99 next year.
An annual subscription for $70 a year.
Signing up for the Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ bundle for $13 a month.

Moviegoers can also rent out private theaters to watch the film with up to 20 friends and family members.

For those that feel more comfortable staying home, “Wonder Woman 1984” can be watched on HBO Max.

In a historic vote, Spain’s lower house of parliament on Thursday gave majority backing to the country’s first euthanasia law.

The bill regulating the right to a dignified death attracted cross-party support and was approved on first reading with 198-138 votes and two abstentions. It will now go to the Senate, and if no amendments are introduced, it could go into effect in the early months of 2021. This would make Spain the sixth country in the world to recognize this right after the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Canada and New Zealand. In Switzerland, assisted suicide “from non-selfish motives” is legal.

The law will allow people suffering from a serious, incurable condition to request and receive assistance to end their lives. The petition must be made on four occasions and be backed by medical reports, and healthcare workers will retain their right to conscientious objection. After the procedure is approved by an evaluating committee, the patient must give final consent again. Supporters said these provisions guarantee that euthanasia will be an option but never an imposition as its detractors have claimed.

The text of the bill talks about “serious, chronic and debilitating conditions or serious, incurable diseases causing intolerable suffering” as valid causes for requesting life-ending assistance. While the document does not use the term “assisted suicide,” it contemplates “the direct administration to a patient of a substance by the relevant healthcare professional,” in other words euthanasia, or “supplying a patient with a substance that can be self-administered to cause death,” meaning medically assisted suicide. The procedure may be carried out at public or private health centers, or at the patient’s home, according to the bill.

Several lawmakers underscored that surveys show a majority of Spaniards to be in favor of regulating the right to die. “It is a social demand that cuts across ideological differences,” said Health Minister Salvador Illa, of the Socialist Party (PSOE). Illa said the bill’s passage proves that Spain is “a democratic, mature country. We could not remain unmoved by unbearable suffering.” In recent years, the Congress of Deputies had refused to legislate on this matter on up to four occasions.

The leader of Ciudadanos (Citizens), Inés Arrimadas, said it was an honor to support the bill, which began as an initiative of leftist parties. “We are liberal and we support liberty,” she said, asking detractors to refrain from turning the bill’s contents into “a caricature.”

Only right-of-center groups – Popular Party (PP), the far-right Vox and Union of the Navarrese People (UPN) – voted against the bill. While the PP toned down its criticism, Vox lawmaker Lourdes Méndez-Monasterio stated that the law will introduce “an industry of death” in Spain.
