PARIS (Reuters) - Roger Federer is used to ending grand slam tournaments on Sundays rather than starting them but the French Open's quirky schedule could not throw the Swiss stylist off his stride as he strolled through his Roland Garros opener in ruthless fashion.

The 31-year-old had his nose put out of joint when forced to play on opening Sunday when the French Open brought forward the start in 2006 but he was serene as he thrashed Spanish grand slam rookie Pablo Carreno-Busta 6-2 6-2 6-3 in the first round this year.

He was in good company too.

Federer, winner of a record 17 grand slam titles, walked out on a chilly Philippe Chatrier court after 15-times major winner Serena Williams put down an early marker with a 51-minute drubbing of Georgia's Anna Tatishvili.

American Williams turned her match against Tatishvili into little more than a practice session, winning 6-0 6-1 before completing the tougher task of conducting a courtside interview in French.

"It's way, way, more nerve-racking than playing tennis," Williams said after a charm-offensive that went down well with the Parisian crowds wrapped up under coats in the stands.

Federer, who often does his post-match news conferences in three languages, was equally impressive on the opening day alongside the Bois de Boulogne.

The Swiss former champion, seeded two and with a realistic chance of reaching the final after being placed in the opposite half of the draw to his Roland Garros nemesis Rafa Nadal and world number one Novak Djokovic, sealed victory with a graceful backhand winner.

"It's clearly important to win in straight sets if you can and not waste extra energy," Federer told reporters.

"I put a lot of focus on that always, especially in the early rounds of a tournament."

Serbian Ana Ivanovic, a third former French Open champion scheduled to brighten up the day's 32-match schedule, had to work a little harder to reach the second round.

DESPERATELY CRAVE

The 2008 champion, who has never hit those heights again, got past Croatia's Petra Martic 6-1 3-6 6-3.

Gilles Simon, one of six Frenchmen seeded as the host nation desperately craves a first male champion since Yannick Noah in 1983, gave fans on Suzanne Lenglen anxiety attacks as he lost the opening two sets to old warrior Lleyton Hewitt before recovering to win 3-6 1-6 6-4 6-1 7-5.

Simon led 5-0 in the fifth set but an attack of nerves almost let veteran Aussie Hewitt steal victory.

"I'm just sad that it takes me one hour to feel good on the court," Simon told reporters. "Today I got lucky."

Federer, who in 2006 made his feelings known to organisers after being served up as a tasty tournament appetiser for a Sunday first round against Diego Hartfield, was far more relaxed this time round after again being asked to showcase the tournament's unique Sunday start.

Up against a young Spaniard who won seven consecutive titles at the third-tier Futures level of the men's tour this season, Federer warmed to the task immediately.

"I remember they sort of forced me to play on Sunday years back to promote their Sunday thing," Federer told reporters.

"Wimbledon does it in 13 days and the French does it in 15. So it doesn't make sense. But I do understand that a weekend for tennis is very important for the people who can show up.

"But I'm happy this time around. I told them if they wanted me to play Sunday, whatever, I'm fine with it. They took that opportunity right away."

Looking confident and razor-sharp on the back of a 24-match winning streak, 2002 champion Serena Williams took the first set against Tatishvili in 20 minutes, striking winners with ominous ease.

"I have to say I'm always a little nervous going into first round matches at slams, but this time I wasn't as nervous as I was previously," said the 31-year-old, who has been almost unbeatable since a shock defeat by Virginie Razzano in the first round here last year.

"I felt pretty safe and felt good about my game and that if I can just do what I do in practice, I'll be okay."

As is the way when Serena wins easily, post-match questions quickly moved away from her tennis.

As well as her linguistic skills, the American also expressed her delight at attending an art class in Paris.

"I'm good at that," she said when asked if she has done a self-portrait. "I just draw a circle with a line and then two arms, and then I just draw a lot of hair and a stick figure.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama plans to appoint longtime adviser Jason Furman to be his new chief White House economist, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Furman, who will replace economist Alan Krueger as chair of the White House's Council of Economic Advisers (CEA), has a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University and has advised Obama since his 2008 election campaign.

Furman has been instrumental in formulating administration policies on taxes, the response to the U.S. recession, and efforts to avoid a "fiscal cliff" at the end of last year.

Krueger, who was confirmed as CEA chair in November 2011, is returning to his professor post at Princeton University, from which he has been on leave, the White House confirmed.

"Alan was the driving force behind many of the economic policies that I have proposed that will grow our economy and create middle-class jobs," Obama said in a statement.

"And while we have more work to do, today our economy is improving - thanks, in no small part, to Alan's efforts," he said.

Krueger had to return to the school by this fall in order to maintain his tenure, according to one source.

A White House spokeswoman declined to comment on Furman.

Furman is currently assistant to the president for economic policy and principal deputy director of the White House National Economic Council (NEC), which is run by Gene Sperling, and was an economist in the Clinton administration.

When former NEC head Larry Summers left the administration at the end of 2010, Furman was considered a possible replacement, but the post went to Sperling instead.

"He's as bright and able as any economist I've worked with," Summers said of Furman in an interview. "I think he'll be terrific."

The CEA advises the president on domestic and international economic policy based on data and economic research. The chairman is a cabinet member and requires Senate confirmation.

Former colleagues said Furman would be effective because of his good relationship with the president and White House staff.

"Jason has got analytical chops plus extensive economic experience. The president listens to him," said Austan Goolsbee, a University of Chicago professor and former CEA chair under Obama.

"It's hard to find someone with his combination of policy experience and pragmatism along with serious economic and analytic rigor," said Jason Bordoff, a professor at Columbia University and a former White House adviser on energy issues.

"He's strategic. He understands how the White House policy process works, all of which will allow the CEA to be incredibly relevant," he said.

The appointment is likely a sign that budget and tax fights with Congress will continue to play a high profile role in White House economic policy. It could also raise the profile of the CEA within the White House itself. (Additional reporting by Roberta Rampton; Editing by Sandra Maler)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Ray Manzarek, a founding member and keyboardist of 1960s rock group The Doors, died on Monday at a medical clinic in Germany at age 74 following a battle with cancer, the group's manager Tom Vitorino said.

Manzarek, who lived in Northern California's Napa Valley wine country for the past decade, had been seeking treatment in Germany for bile duct cancer, Vitorino said. He died in Rosenheim, Germany, surrounded by his wife and brothers.

Singer Jim Morrison and then-UCLA film student Manzarek formed The Doors in 1965 after a chance meeting at Los Angeles' Venice Beach, and Manzarek's keyboard work would go on to be a touchstone of hits like "Break On Through to the Other Side" and "Light My Fire."

The band, which was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, sold some 100 million records since its heyday with psychedelic-era classics such as 1971's "Riders on the Storm."

Manzarek's electric organ was a defining aspect next to Morrison's booming voice in the band's blues- and jazz-influenced take on rock and roll.

"I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of my friend and bandmate Ray Manzarek today," The Doors guitarist Robby Krieger said in a statement. "I'm just glad to have been able to have played Doors songs with him for the last decade. Ray was a huge part of my life and I will always miss him."

The Doors broke up shortly after Morrison's death from heart failure in 1971, but their mythology exploded following the 1980 publication of the biography "No One Here Gets Out Alive" and the 1991 film, "The Doors," by director Oliver Stone.

The band recorded a total of eight albums between 1967 and 1972. After the band's break up, Manzarek released two albums with the rock band "Nite City" in the late 1970s and six solo albums, most recently "Translucent Blues" in 2011 with blues-rock guitarist Roy Rogers.

Manzarek and Krieger became locked in a legal battle with drummer John Densmore in 2003 after the two reunited under The Doors name and later "The Doors of the 21st Century," but were finally forced to tour as Manzarek-Krieger.

Manzarek, who was born in Chicago in 1939, embraced old age in a 2006 interview with Reuters.

"We occupy these bodies for 70, 80, 90 years, and it's so much fun being alive on planet Earth that you want to keep this thing as fresh as you possibly can," he said.

"The spirit, the mind, the soul, what's inside of you just gets hipper and hipper as you get older. ... You get a whole broadened outlook on things," he added. "That just naturally keeps going, but the damn body slows down."

Manzarek is also the author of two novels and most notably the 1998 memoir, "Light My Fire: My Life with The Doors."

Manzarek is survived by his wife, Dorothy, two brothers, a son, daughter-in-law and three grandchildren.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Google staged four discussions expounding on the finer points of its "Glass" wearable computer during this week's developer conference. Missing from the agenda, however, was a session on etiquette when using the recording-capable gadget, which some attendees faithfully wore everywhere - including to the crowded bathrooms.

Google Glass, a cross between a mobile computer and eyeglasses that can both record video and surf the Internet, is now available to a select few but is already among the year's most buzz-worthy new gadgets. The device has geeks all aflutter but is unnerving everyone from lawmakers to casino operators worried about the potential for hitherto unimagined privacy and policy violations.

"I had a friend and we're sitting at dinner and about 30 minutes into it she said, 'You know those things freak me out,'" said Allen Firstenberg, a technology consultant at the Google developers conference. He has been wearing Glass for about a week but offered to take them off for the comfort of his dinner companion.

On another occasion, Firstenberg admitted to walking into a bathroom wearing his Glass without realizing it.

"Most of the day I totally forget it's there," he said.

Many believe wearable computers represent the next big shift in technology, just as smartphones evolved from personal computers. Apple and Samsung are said to be working on other forms of wearable technology.

The test version of Glass looks like a clear pair of eyeglasses with a hefty slab along the right side. Since it began shipping to a couple thousand carefully selected early adopters who paid about $1,500 for the device, it has inspired a bit of ridicule - from a parody on "Saturday Night Live" to a popular blog poking fun at its users.

Other industry experts take a more serious tack, pointing out the potential for misuse because Glass can record video far less conspicuously than a handheld device.

Glass also has won many fans. Google and some early users maintain that privacy fears are overblown. As with traditional video cameras, a tiny light blinks on to let people know when it is recording.

Several Glass wearers at the developers conference said they whip the device off in inappropriate situations, such as in gym locker rooms or work meetings. Michael Evans, a Web developer from Washington, D.C., attending the Google conference, said he removed his Glass when he went to the movies, even though the device would be ill-suited for recording a feature-length film.

"I just figured I don't want to be the first guy kicked out of the movies," he said.

NO GLASS ALLOWED

A stamp-sized electronic screen mounted on the left side of a pair of eyeglass frames, Glass can record video, access email, provide turn-by-turn driving directions and retrieve info from the Web by connecting wirelessly to a user's cell phone.

Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt dismissed concerns about the brave new world of wearable computers during a talk at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government in April.

"Criticisms are inevitably from people who are afraid of change or who have not figured out that there will be an adaptation of society to it," he said.

Schmidt acknowledged that there are certain places where Glass will not be appropriate but that he believed new rules of social etiquette will coalesce over time. Firstenberg said it will take time for all sides to get comfortable with the new technology.

"I don't think we should go into the conversation assuming that Glass is bad," he said.

Indeed, previous technology innovations such as mobile phones and wireless headsets that initially raised concerns are now subject to tacit rules of etiquette, such as not talking loudly on the bus and turning a ringer off in a meeting.

Still, some have decided to leave nothing to chance.

Casino operator Caesar's Entertainment recently announced that Glass is not permitted while gambling or when in showrooms, though guests can wear it in other areas. In March, Seattle's Five Point Cafe made headlines for becoming the first bar to ban Glass. "Respect our customers privacy as we'd expect them to respect yours," says a statement on the caf's website.

The California Highway Patrol says there is no law that explicitly forbids a driver from wearing Glass while driving in the state. But according to Officer Elon Steers, if a driver appears to be distracted as a result of the device, an officer can take enforcement action.

PRIVACY TRACK RECORD

Lawmakers are beginning to consider Glass.

On Thursday, eight members of the U.S. Congress sent a letter to Google Chief Executive Larry Page, asking for details about how Glass handles various privacy issues, including whether it is capable of facial recognition.

According to Google, there are no facial recognition technologies built into the device and it has no plans to do so "unless we have strong privacy protections in place."

During one of this week's conference sessions - an open discussion about Glass - members of the Glass team answered a question about privacy by noting that social implications and etiquette have been a big area of focus during the development of the product, which is still a test version.

Some of the Glass-phobia may stem from Google's own track record on privacy. In 2010, Google revealed that its fleet of Street View cars, which criss-cross the globe taking panoramic photos for the Google Maps product, also had captured personal information such as emails and web pages that were transmitted over unencrypted home wireless networks.

"The fact that it's Google offering the service, as opposed to say Brookstone, raises privacy issues," said Marc Rotenberg, the executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, a non-profit privacy advocacy group, citing Google's history and its scale in Internet advertising.

Rotenberg says his main concern centers on the stream of data collected by the devices - everything from audio and video to a user's location data - going to Google's data centers.

Ryan Calo, a University of Washington law professor who specializes in privacy and technology, said Glass is not very different from other technologies available today, whether it is a smartphone or "spy" pens that secretly record audio. But Glass is on people's faces, so it feels different.

"The face is a really intimate place and to have a piece of technology on it is unsettling," Calo said. "Much as a drone is unsettling because we have some ideas of war."

For all the hand-wringing, some early adopters are sold.

Ryan Warner, who recently graduated from college and who has developed a recipe app for Glass with Evans, said he was surprised by the reaction he got when he went to a bar.

"I was like, I don't know if I should have it on or not.' I was kind of in that phase," he said, "and the bouncer was like, Oh, my god, is that Google Glass?' He was excited."

VIRGINIA WATER, England (Reuters) - Nicolas Colsaerts has experienced something of a comedown since helping Europe win the Ryder Cup in September and the big-hitting Belgian is looking for his game to ignite some time soon.

The 30-year-old, dubbed 'The Dude' by his team mates after making a stylish debut in the biennial event last year, looked typically cool and dapper after moving into contention with a second-round 70 at the PGA Championship.

Wentworth almost turned into 'Wetworth' on Friday as driving rain, eight-degree Celsius temperatures and 15-mph winds made a mockery of the so-called British summer.

Colsaerts, though, had a sunny disposition after posting a two-under-par halfway total of 142 to lie four strokes behind Italy's Francesco Molinari, the clubhouse leader.

"It was very cold today and the course is playing difficult so it all adds up to a pretty good test out there," Colsaerts told Reuters in an interview.

"I thought I did pretty good. This is one of those weeks when you get yourself into position because everyone will make mistakes and if you can put together a good six or seven holes you can get right up there.

"It was a very long year last year and it took its toll. I'm still recovering a bit from everything that happened and I can't wait for my season to kick off."

Colsaerts made a spectacular start to his Ryder Cup career in 2012, reeling off eight birdies and an eagle as he and partner Lee Westwood defeated Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker in the opening-day fourballs in Illinois.

The tall Belgian did not quite hit those heights at the European Tour's flagship event on Friday but he was pleased with his display nonetheless.

"I missed the cut here in 2011 and 2012 probably because I had long weeks leading up to the event," said Colsaerts.

MATCH PLAY

He reached the semi-finals of the preceding World Match Play Championship two years ago before scooping first prize 12 months later.

Colsaerts was eliminated in the quarter-finals of last week's World Match Play in Bulgaria by eventual winner Graeme McDowell.

"I got knocked out early in Bulgaria so I've probably come to Wentworth feeling a little more fresh than normal," he said.

"When you add everything up, a few differences here and there can mean a lot against the best players in the world."

Colsaerts has focused his attention on the U.S. PGA Tour so far this season and has had mixed results, achieving two top-10 finishes and missing the cut four times.

"In the States the difference between finishing fifth and 30th and 40th is so much less than it is over here," he said. "It's all about little details really."

Eleven members of Europe's 12-man Ryder Cup team have been competing at Wentworth this week and Colsaerts has enjoyed spending time recalling their memorable comeback victory at the Medinah Country Club.

"It's been pretty cool to see how your relationship can evolve with all those people," he said. "You look into their eyes knowing you've got something in common because you've been part of history with them.

"Every time you see someone there are great big smiles and you don't even really need to say anything.

"We all realise we did something extraordinary...and it's a confidence booster to know you were an integral part of a team effort that was that big."

NEW YORK, May 23 (Reuters) - The New York Rangers scored in overtime to complete a 4-3 comeback win over the Boston Bruins at Madison Square Garden on Thursday and avoid elimination from the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Trailing 3-0 in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semi-final series, the Rangers needed to win at home to force a Game Five in Boston on Saturday.

The Bruins, Stanley Cup winners two years ago, looked to be heading towards a sweep, leading 2-0 and then 3-2 on Thursday before the Rangers fought back to force overtime where Chris Kreider scored the winner.

"It's going to be a challenge but I'm really happy we got this one," said New York goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, who made 37 saves.

"This was a big one obviously. It was do or die, but I'm happy with the way we responded. We're really excited about getting another chance."

After a scoreless first period, the game suddenly burst to life with three goals in the second and third.

The Bruins broke the deadlock when Nathan Horton scored a power play goal after New York forward Kris Newbury received a penalty for interference on Boston goaltender Tuukka Rask, who made 28 saves.

"They gave us some life. We found a way. We're still breathing," Rangers coach John Tortorella said.

Boston, who had the first seven shots on goal in the opening

period, then doubled their lead when Torey Krug scored another power play goal.

The Rangers had only scored a total five goals in the first three games and seemed to be out of luck when Ryan McDonagh hit the post with a snap shot.

But Carl Hagelin cut the deficit with a backhanded goal after Rask lost his balance and tripped over midway through the second period to give the Blueshirts hope.

Derek Stepan then tied the game with a wraparound goal less than two minutes into the third after he stole the puck from Boston defenseman Zdeno Chara.

"It was a pretty even game. We made some mistakes and they capitalised on those mistakes," said Chara.

"We had some chances but they scored more goals. Obviously they were desperate. It's 3-1 so we will get ready for the next one."

Tyler Seguin put Boston back in front when he scored on a wrist shot but the visitors received a penalty for having too many players on the ice.

Bryan Boyle scored from the ensuing power play to tie the score at 3-3 and set up overtime which ended at 7:03 when Kreider buried the puck in the back of Boston's net.

"The guys stepped up. Derek stepped up big. He was a horse tonight," said Boyle.
