A farmers' market, fun fair and charity stalls offered attractions for people of all ages.

Brian Llewellyn's Punch and Judy charity show proved to be a good crowd pleaser.

Brian, 56, from Darlington, said: "It never ceases to amaze me that kids love it so much. I think it's because they love to join in the pandemonium. I know people are enjoying it when I have a huge crowd blocking the aisle."

Erin Laverick, eight, who had never seen a Punch and Judy before, enjoyed the show with dad Paul, a 48-year-old electrician from Thornaby.

Paul said: "This is the first time we've come to the gala, but it won't be the last. It's been a great day."

A stage was also set up for the Yarm's Got Talent show, which saw local bands and Harlequin Stage School perform.

And there was plenty of food including hog roasts, burgers, curry and cakes to nibble on.

But not all the excitement was confined to the High Street as throughout the day there were bell boat races on the river.

Despite coming last in her race, Helen Simpson, a member of the Bridge Street Babes team, was all smiles.

Dressed as a hula dancer, the 31-year-old hairdresser from Eaglescliffe, said: "We've done it since it started three years ago. It's a bit of fun, we've had no training but it's a good way to get into the spirit of the gala."

Deputy Mayor Paul Smith said: "This is the fourth year and it's gone brilliantly. It's exactly how I envisioned it to be. The gala is about the history of Yarm and about getting everybody down to have a good time."

Erchonia will be presenting a study it conducted using low level lasers to treat late stage Parkinson's disease. Eight volunteers between Yves Saint Laurent Shoe 18 and 80 years with late stage PD participated in the non-controlled, non-randomized study and received low level laser treatments daily for two weeks. Patients were asked to rate the severity of their symptoms (balance, gait, freezing, cognitive function, rolling in bed, and speech difficulties) from 0 to 10 using the Visual Analog Scale. All participants demonstrated a decrease in VAS from baseline to study endpoint.

The second study Erchonia plans to present shows how low level lasers may reduce low-density lipoprotein levels (LDL). Forty-one patients between 18 and 65 years participated in the non-controlled, non-randomized study. Partipants received a 40-minute ZERONA laser treatment three times a week for two weeks and demonstrated a reduction in low-density lipoprotein levels of 12.05 points, a 13% reduction. This study suggests that low level laser therapy may serve as a non-invasive way to reduce LDL levels in two weeks.

Erchonia's third study explores how its ZERONA laser impacts leptin levels, the hormone linked to hunger. Twenty volunteers between the ages of 18 and 65 participated in Erchonia's non-controlled, non-randomized study. Participants received 40-minute ZERONA low level laser treatments, three times per week for two weeks. All participants demonstrated a reduction in leptin levels compared to their baseline -- on average, a 50% decrease. Since leptin levels are associated with hunger, this study shows how low level laser technology may non-invasively suppress the appetite.

MOSCOW, July San Jose Sharks 23 (Xinhua) -- Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov assured Friday that there will be no food shortage due to the ongoing drought.

"There will be no food shortage, and I would ask regional authorities to inform its citizens on that, and (would ask) federal communications agency to monitor prices on grain, milk, meat and punish those guilty,"said Zubkov as quoted by Russian media.

He meanwhile confirmed food stability in the country and no economic grounds for the rush for food products, adding that it is necessary just "to work securely with no fuss at the market."

Zubkov also said the government has enough sources to suffice inner food products demand, citing some 9.5 ton of grain in Russia' s stock.

There is already an expectation among city movers and shakers that the 2011 budget will demand a property tax increase. The rumored increases range from 3 to 10 percent. Some will justify these increases because the city held last year's budget to a modest 2.5 percent tax increase (largely because of those purple trash bags) and because in the intervening year municipal service costs have risen, capital projects cannot be postponed and the city and county governments have been forced to shoulder more of the state government's fiscal responsibilities because of the recession. The core of this debate is leadership. The city council recently rewarded the Montreal Canadiens city manager with a 10 percent salary increase and sweetened the pot with generous perks on retirement and termination of service benefits. He may have deserved these increases, but so have many loyal city employees. Some city departments have been asked to do more with less, positions have been eliminated and others combined to make a more efficient use of limited resources.

It appears to be working. The sky has not fallen, and few citizens have noticed any serious reductions in city services. New watches-d fees have been instituted in the recreation department to help balance its budget. The public library has reduced hours. Similar reductions have been instituted in other departments. It was needed and saved city property taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars.

Now comes the hard part. Every city department has a constituency. They will all argue that they have already sacrificed much because of last year's budget and now it is time to raise taxes to maintain services. It will be a test for the city manger to respond responsibly to these challenges. That is what he is being handsomely paid to do.

I suggest that he present two options: a flat-lined budget similar to the 2010 budget (minus those purple bags) and another with a 2 percent increase. Let the city council decide on one or the other.

Recessions do not 深圳南山搬家公司 last forever. Once the economy begins a strong recovery, we can revisit some of the important city operations and then decide on what needs to be given additional dollars. Till then, let's make do with a zero percent tax increase in the 2011 budget. I urge all citizens to attend these hearings. Ten parent corn lines, including four mutants (dull Coach Outlet sugary2, amylose-extender sugary2, amylose-extender dull, and an amylose-extender with introgressed Guatemalen germplasm [GUAT ae]) and six lines with introgressed exotic germplasm backgrounds, were crossed with each other to create 20 progeny crosses to increase resistant starch (RS) as a dietary fiber in corn starch and to provide materials for thermal evaluation. The resistant starch 2 (RS2) values from the 10 parent lines were 18.3-52.2% and the values from the 20 progeny crosses were 16.6-34.0%. The %RS2 of parents was not additive in the offspring but greater RS2 in parents was correlated to greater RS2 in the progeny crosses (r = 0.63). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measured starch thermal characteristics, revealing positive correlations of peak gelatinization temperature and change in enthalpy with %RS2 (r = 0.65 and r = 0.67, P 鈮?0.05); however, % retrogradation (a measure of RS3) and retrogradation parameters did not correlate with %RS2. The %RS2 and onset temperature increased with the addition of the ae gene, likely because RS delays gelatinization.

Four types of resistant starch (RS) have been defined. RS 1 is resistant because of the surrounding food matrix; RS2 is present in ungelatinized, raw starches; RS3 is created by r茅trogradation; and RS4 is produced through chemical alteration (Englyst et al 1996). Incorporation of RS into the diet provides many health benefits: it serves as a prebiotic, or fermentable substrate, for the growth of probiotics; lowers the pH of the colon (Cherrington et al 1991); increases mineral absorption (Courdray et al 1997); and increases cell turnover (Young et al 2005). Cholesterol metabolism may be down-regulated by RS, by production of short-chain fatty acids that may either suppress cholesterol synthesis in the liver (Hara et al 1999) or decrease cholesterol absorption (Vahouny et al 1988).

Corn endosperm mutants can affect appearance of the kernel or underlying component quality, while double mutants may synergistically affect endosperm appearance and quality. Corn starch properties in the germplasm can be modified by traditional plant breeding methods using major (e.g., naturally occurring mutant genes), or minor (modifying genes) genetic factors (Ji et al 2004) where the effect is enhanced by crossing the lines. Exotic corn lines may provide unusual traits of interest including increased %RS through the presence of modifying genes. High-amylose (amylose-extender, ae) corn lines provide greater amounts of RS2 than normal corn through a major (mutant) gene. Thus, crossing ae and exotic corn types could increase the RS, provide unique materials for food use, and possibly provide cooking properties better than ae corn lines used alone.

Whereas four types of RS have been defined, only RS2, RS3, and RS4 are routinely measured. The process of extraction may alter RSl because it destroys the surrounding food matrix. There are several options available for measuring RS2. RS3, and RS4. The Megazyme RS kit measures RS2 effectively using Approved Method 32-40 (AACC International 2010) and is designed to screen large numbers of samples (McCleary and Monaghan 2002). However, most starch is not eaten in an ungelatinized form; the starch is generally cooked. Thus, the Megazyme kit, which includes no gelatinization step, may not be an accurate measure of RS as eaten.

INVESTIGATIONS in 2004 found corrosion in the main cables of the Forth Road Bridge.

Experts warned that a new crossing would be necessary to take the load off the existing structure and that heavy goods vehicles might have to be barred from the bridge from 2014.

Since then, further work has been done on the cables. The results, published earlier this year, showed that the cables were still deteriorating, but not as fast as was feared four years ago.

Revised estimates were put in place, predicting traffic restrictions might not have to be introduced until 2017 or so. At the same time, dehumidifiers were installed in the cables to dry them out, in the hope of stabilising the corrosion and stopping the deterioration.

However, the results of that remedial work will not be known until 2011 or 2012, and only then will the true lifespan of the existing bridge's cables be known.

If the dehumidifiers have worked, the cables might be able to take the strain of the bridge for a further 100 years, particularly if most traffic is diverted on to another bridge.

But there is another option: the cables could be replaced. It would have been extremely difficult had the existing bridge been the only available crossing over that part of the Forth, because it would have to be shut completely for a time so that the cables could be replaced.

However, if and when the new bridge is built, the cables in the existing structure could be replaced without too much disruption - although it would be an expensive job.

Either way, it is now likely the existing Forth Road Bridge will survive and be in operation for the 120 years it was originally designed for - albeit with the help of a neighbouring bridge and possibly other remedial work.

TOPSHAM ? More than 50 studios and working farms across the state will be open to the public for a Fiber Arts Tour Weekend on Aug. 6- 8.

Participants will get to see or visit an antique spinning mill in Harmony, a Pygora goat farm in Limerick, a feltmaker's studio in Garland, natural dye demonstrations in New Gloucester, and tours of gardens and sheep flocks in Brownfield. There will also be spinning wheel collections, hand-spun yarns, art quilts, collectible crafts and freshly shorn fleeces.

The event, put on by the statewide nonprofit Maine Fiberarts, will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"Our Fiber Arts Tour Weekend is a wonderful way to step inside a working studio or farm and see how craft is made," said Christine Macchi, executive director of Maine Fiberarts, which houses revolving exhibitions, photo libraries and other visuals.

On view at the gallery through Aug. 31 is "Encounters: Paintings on Handmade Paper," by Arlene Morris. A meet-the-artist reception will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6.

"Last time, weekend participants sold artwork, took commissions for hooked rugs, introduced community members to farm animals and products, talked shopped and made some long-lasting Coach Large Wallets contacts," Macchi said. "This is a great way to get to know Maine artists and farmers."

While the Fiber Arts Tour Weekend is the time when visitors know participating sites will be open, a map listing 134 Maine studios and farms is available for visits year-round on a "best-to-call- ahead" basis.
