Shot three times while returning from scouting enemy lines in the Virginia wilderness, Jackson was badly wounded in the left arm by one of the large bullets the night of May 2, 1863. Blood gushed from a severed artery. It took at least two hours to get him to a field hospital, and Jackson was dropped twice in a stretcher before his arm was amputated. He died days later at 39.

Scholars have long questioned whether it was an infection or pneumonia that killed Jackson, who gained the nickname "Stonewall" early in the war and went on to be lionized in the South and feared in the North because of his military exploits.

On Friday, the 150th anniversary of Jackson's death, a trauma surgeon with experience on the battlefield in Iraq and Afghanistan will reveal his diagnosis of Jackson's death after reinvestigating the medical record. After reviewing the 1860s files and subsequent reports, University of Maryland surgeon and professor Joseph DuBose told The Associated Press that Jackson most likely died of pneumonia.

DuBose is confirming the original diagnosis given by Jackson's personal physician, the famed Confederate doctor Hunter H. McGuire.

"You would be hard-pressed to find someone more qualified than him for the treatment of this injury and taking care of Stonewall Jackson," DuBose said. "I do defer to him in some regard. I kind of have to. He's not only the treating physician; he's also the only source of information."

McGuire's original medical notes were lost when he was captured by Union soldiers. He recreated them from memory three years later for the Richmond Medical Journal.

Pneumonia was common in the Civil War, becoming the third most fatal disease for soldiers.

Jackson is the subject of an annual conference Friday at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore that reviews medical diagnoses of historical figures. In the past, researchers have reviewed the deaths of Alexander the Great, Edgar Allan Poe and Abraham Lincoln, among others.

DuBose is a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, where Jackson was a professor before the Civil War. A large statue of Jackson stands near the campus barracks. So, his legacy and death were ingrained in DuBose's experience as a cadet.

Jackson was shot by soldiers from the 18th North Carolina regiment in a moment of confusion. He had led a surprise attack in the Battle of Chancellorsville in Virginia, and the Confederates drove Union forces back about three miles. Civil War historian James I. Robertson Jr. recounts that Jackson wasn't satisfied and rode out at night to review the enemy's position. When he rode back, he was shot by his own soldiers.

Then, being dropped during a frantic nighttime rescue may well have contributed to Jackson's death, DuBose found.

"If he had been dropped and had a pulmonary contusion, or bruise of the lung, it creates an area of the lung that doesn't clear secretions real well, and it can be a focus that pneumonia can start in," DuBose said. "That's probably what happened in this particular instance."

DuBose, a U.S. Air Force veteran, said pulmonary embolism a blockage of the major blood vessel in the lung still occurs in nearly 6 percent of combat casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is even more common among those who have amputations, as Jackson did.

Still, the debate will continue over Jackson's death.

Dr. Philip Mackowiak, an internist who organizes the conference each year, said he differs with DuBose on the Jackson case. He reviewed the records and said he believes a recurrent pulmonary emboli destroyed Jackson's lung over time, leading to his death. The medical records don't describe Jackson coughing, as one would expect with pneumonia, Mackowiak said.

It's impossible to know for sure what killed Jackson. But DuBose said modern medicine could have saved him. Jackson's doctor didn't have the tools or knowledge to treat the complications after the shooting.

Robertson, a former Virginia Tech historian and professor who wrote Jackson's biography, said he has been persuaded that sepsis, caused by severe infection, killed Jackson, due to his chaotic rescue and unsanitary conditions. He noted, though, doctors at the time agreed Jackson had pneumonia.

"Unfortunately, medicine in the mid-19th century was still in the dark ages," he said. "Obviously, I'm not overly concerned with how he died. I'm terribly concerned that he died."

Jackson was a pivotal figure and perhaps the most esteemed soldier in the war, Robertson said. He was known for secrecy and speed to execute surprise flank attacks for Gen. Robert E. Lee's strategy.

"He was killed in what may be the high-water mark of the Confederacy," Robertson said. "You can make a case that after Chancellorsville, it's just a question of time for Lee."

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama hit the golf course on Monday with two Republican senators and a Democrat, part of an effort to advance his second-term agenda by having better relationships with Congress.

Obama, an avid golfer with a respectable 17 handicap, rarely takes politics to the greens, preferring instead to golf with friends and staffers far out of the sight of the reporters who travel with him.

But he has been trying harder in his second term with a schmooze offensive, reaching out to members of Congress whom he has blamed for thwarting proposals he believes would improve the economy.

"Most of the talk centered on the round of golf and not the latest round of legislative negotiations in Congress," a White House official said.

Playing the south course at the Andrews military base in suburban Washington, Obama paired up with Democrat Mark Udall of Colorado, the top-ranked golfer in Congress as measured by Golf Digest in 2011. The magazine estimated Udall's handicap at 2.

But the match was won by the Republicans. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia shot a hole-in-one on the par 3 11th hole. Chambliss, whose handicap is 7.4, was joined by Bob Corker, the top Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, who has a 2.1 handicap.

"With the major fiscal issues our country is facing, not to mention foreign relations issues around the world, anytime you can get the president's ear for a few hours, I think that's a good thing," said Corker, in a statement provided by his staff.

Obama has waged bitter fights with Congress over how best to tame the deficit and on proposed new gun control laws after December's school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

But the president has also been criticized for failing to work more closely with the Senate and House of Representatives. He has responded in recent months by hosting dinners and lunches with small groups of lawmakers from both parties to try to find common ground on issues.

Asked whether golf is conducive to conversation about deficit reduction, White House spokesman Jay Carney said: "Well, he's willing to try anything."

Obama golfed 113 times in his first term, according to Mark Knoller of CBS News, known for keeping statistics on the president.

He played with House Republican Speaker John Boehner (handicap: 7.9) in June 2011 and has played twice with Democratic Representative Jim Clyburn (11.3) from South Carolina, in August 2009 and again a year later, Knoller said.

So far in his second term, he has golfed about a dozen times, including his first-ever round with Tiger Woods, the world's top-ranked golfer.

Reporters protested about a lack of access to Obama after they were barred from that game.

Golf handicaps are a measure of ability and a lower handicap signifies a better player.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Redemption was sweet for Los Angeles Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick as he rebounded from what he assessed as two sub-par performances with a flawless display against the St. Louis Blues.

The inspirational Quick made 30 saves to complete the fifth playoff shutout of his career and lead the Stanley Cup champions to a gritty 1-0 win in Saturday's Game Three of the National Hockey League playoffs that followed successive losses in the best-of-seven Western Conference first-round series.

Though Quick was lavishly praised by his team mates for his stellar form in front of a sellout home crowd at Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles, the goaltender played down his influential role in typically laid-back fashion.

"There is still room for improvement so we are going to continue doing that, get better and go to work in (Monday's) Game Four," Quick, 27, told Reuters when asked if he had been happy with his own performance.

"We were never out of it, we just won a game. We did what we had to do to win a game. Everybody worked hard.

"It's what you expect when these two teams play each other. They were just throwing pucks from everywhere, but we handled it well and cleaned up most of the rebounds."

The only goal of the night came from Kings defenseman Slava Voynov, who scored from the right circle in the second period after a lengthy scramble in front of St. Louis goalie Brian Elliott's net.

Both goaltenders had to dig deep in the face of wave after wave of attack as each team earned four power plays during another hard-hitting and tense encounter.

TAKING THE BLAME

Quick, who won the Conn Smythe Trophy last season as the most valuable player in the playoffs, has so far stopped 93 of 97 shots in this series, and none of his team mates accepts he should have taken the blame for the losses in Games One and Two.

"Obviously that's inane for him to say any of those losses are on him," said right wing Justin Williams, who saved the fifth-seeded Kings with about five minutes left on Saturday after diving full-length to knock a loose puck out of the slot.

"But that's who you want as a goaltender - a goaltender who's going to battle for you. A guy who wants to stop every puck that comes toward him. That's what he does.

"In this series we'll need him to be at his best because goals are going to be at a premium. The story for us (in Game Three) was Jonathan Quick. That's the difference for us."

Kings captain Dustin Brown agreed fulsomely, saying: "Quickie had to be really good for us, but the way he played is no surprise to anybody. We need to clean up our D-zone. They had a lot of opportunities."

St. Louis Blues head coach Ken Hitchcock accepts the fourth seeds will have to do a better offensive job against Quick on Monday at Staples Center.

"We just have to come back and find a way to out-work the goalie," Hitchcock said. "I thought we did a lot of good things, we created a lot of turnovers but we didn't sustain the pressure.

"There is not much difference between the two teams. Both goalies are on top of their game. Our guy (Elliott) was great again tonight, their guy was a little bit better."

Armed with reflexes to match his surname, Quick helped his team win their first Stanley Cup last year with a series of brilliant postseason performances, allowing just seven goals in the best-of-seven finals against the New Jersey Devils.

By his own lofty standards, Quick was frustrated by his initial form against the Blues in this postseason, mishandling the puck behind the net in overtime for a 2-1 loss in Game One and allowing a last-minute goal in Game Two for another 2-1 defeat.

"I've got to stop that," Quick said before Game Three. "It's my fault two games in a row. I've got to be better."

Asked if he was perhaps too much of a perfectionist, Quick told Reuters with a dead-pan expression: "No. No. You just want to win. That's all."

Moore was taken to a local hospital Thursday night with a concussion. While there, he developed bleeding around his heart and was flown to Grand Junction, Colo., for surgery.

The 25-year-old was performing a flip when he caught the skis of his sled on the top of a jump. He went over the handlebars and the heavy machine ended up rolling over him. He walked off the course with some help.

Later in the competition, his younger brother, Colten, crashed as well. Colten Moore was taken to the hospital with a separated pelvis. He won't need surgery.

The Moore brothers are from Krum, Texas.

According to , the three realized that Tsarnaev was one of the suspects pictured in photos released by authorities, and then threw away Dzhokhar's backpack containing empty fireworks and a laptop computer, which were discovered by police a week later. 

By almost every account, all three of these young men, just like Tsarnaev, seemed like normal college kids before the bombings. Here is what we know about them so far:

1. They were slackers who looked up to Dzhokhar"They all sort of idolized Jahar," an unidentified woman who had a two-week fling with Dzhokhar Tsarnaev told . She claims that Tsarnaev was the most social of the four and definitely the leader of the group. According to her, they spent a lot of time just smoking pot and listening to music, and, like many college kids, were "goofy, kind of lackadaisical, not interested in their studies."

2. Two of them are from KazakhstanBoth Tazhayakov and Kadyrbayev are from Kazakhstan. They were in the United States on student visas, which, according to , Kadyrbayev had violated by missing too many classes. Phillipos is an American citizen of Ethiopian origin.

3. They face very serious charges Tazhayakov and Kadyrbayev bothand a $250,000 penalty for obstruction of justice. Phillipos, who is charged with lying to federal investigators, faces up to eight years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

4. They texted with each otherKadyrbayev texted Tsarnaev the night authorities released photos of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects to tell him that he looked like one of them. Three things Tsarnaev texted back:

"lol""you better not text me""come to my room and take whatever you want"

5. Kadyrbayev lied about going to MITKadyrbayev listed himself as an engineering student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Russian social-networking site VK. MIT denies that he was ever a student there, according to . In fact, he had dropped out of Umass Dartmouth by the time of the bombings.

6. Kadyrbayev loved pop culture and fancy carsOn Kadyrbayev's profile on Russian , he is wearing an Iron Man mask and posts tracks by hip-hop stars such as Wiz Khalifa and 2 Chainz. He also posted many photos of BMWs — one of which he owned, with the license plate "TERRORISTA #1." Kadyrbayev's lawyer says it's a joking reference to his penchant for late-night partying, not a political statement, according to the .

7. Tazhayakov and Kadyrbayev probably had moneyCiting Kadyrbayev's BMW and photos of him smiling on beaches in Fort Lauderdale and Dubai,  concludes that Tazhayakov and Kadyrbayev came from wealthy families. Tazhayakov listed Atyrau, a wealthy oil city on the Ural River, as his hometown on Facebook.

No one saw a parachute Thursday, and if Kurt Ruppert, 29, of Lake City, Fla., survived the jump and was caught in a tree or lost in the forest, he likely died of hypothermia, a King County sheriff's sergeant said.

"We just don't think he survived at this point," Sgt. Cindi West said Monday.

Dozens of searchers were out four days "calling and calling," West said. "If he survived he wasn't conscious enough to yell to us."

It snowed Thursday night and temperatures have been in the 30s and 40s around Mount Si, a steep and heavily forested 4,200-foot peak about 30 miles east of Seattle.

Searchers covered 9 square miles before the ground search was suspended Sunday. Fog on Monday prevented a helicopter search.

Ruppert was taking turns with two friends who were waiting at the grassy landing zone when he jumped out of a helicopter at 6,500 feet and disappeared.

The webbed wing suit allows a skydiver to glide at up to 100 miles per hour, so Ruppert could have covered a lot of ground, West said.

Friends in Florida say Ruppert had been skydiving seven or eight years and was experienced in a wing suit.

There's a record of Ruppert's cellphone signal until he went up in the air and jumped or shut it off, West said. That information led to an extensive search of a quarter-square mile area, which found no sign of him.

Outlying areas where Ruppert might have landed are heavily wooded or mountain cliffs.

Ruppert carried a blue parachute in a black pack. He was dressed in a tan and green wing suit, which would make him hard to spot in the woods.

Friends of Ruppert's were with ground searchers over the weekend, but did not want to talk with reporters, West said.

"People that are out there are having a little memorial today on the mountain," said a friend in Florida, Skydive Palatka owner Art Shaffer.

"There's a lot of sad people here," he said Monday.

(Reuters) - Time Warner Cable Inc, the second-largest U.S. cable provider, will no longer aggressively push "triple play" packages of Internet, video and voice on its customers, moving away from the long-held industry practice of bundling the services together.

Time Warner Cable is the first cable company in the U.S. to acknowledge that customers would prefer to only pay for television and Internet, as demand for landline service has been declining steadily with many people only using cellphones, even at home.

The company lost 35,000 voice subscribers in the first quarter, missing analysts' estimates of a gain of 76,000 subscribers. Overall revenue for the quarter also came in just slightly short of expectations.

Getting customers hooked on all three services will no longer be a priority when potential customers call to ask about subscribing, Chief Operating Officer Rob Marcus said.

Instead, representatives will probe customers to find out what services they actually use and then "upsell" premium offerings such as faster Internet or premium television channels based on customer's interests.

"We were almost exclusively about the 'triple play' previously," he said in an interview on Thursday.

The cable industry faces a challenge from customers who consume an increasing amount of Internet video and subscribe to lower cost alternatives such as Netflix. Time Warner Cable issued earnings on Thursday that showed it lost a worse-than-expected 119,000 video customers in the first quarter.

The new strategy, which was rolled out in the first quarter, resulted in more customers signing up for single or double play packages than triple play packages. The company lost 35,000 net triple play subscribers in the quarter compared to a year ago.

Part of the rationale for the change is that customers will spend more when they feel they are using all their services, Marcus said.

Customers who want a "triple play" package with voice can still buy one and those bundles will continue to be a part of Time Warner Cable's marketing.

Marcus said it would take time for the new pricing and packaging to deliver results but said that, so far, new customers were spending more than a year ago. Average revenue per subscriber was $104.84, up by $1.27 from the fourth quarter of last year.

ISI Group cable analyst Vijay Jayant said Time Warner Cable was right to shift away from what has been a flagship offering for the industry since at least 2005, because consumer tastes are changing.

"In this environment, who really wants to pay for a wireline phone service?" Jayant said.

Time Warner Cable added only 143,000 high-speed data subscribers in the first quarter, fewer than the 181,000 subscriber additions that analysts had expected, according to StreetAccount.

Time Warner Cable and its larger rival, Comcast Corp, have increasingly relied on Internet customers for growth as they continue to lose cable TV subscribers and grapple with rising programming costs. Comcast declined to comment on whether it would consider moving away from a 'triple play' strategy.

Net income attributable to Time Warner Cable rose to $401 million, or $1.34 per share, in the first quarter, from $382 million, or $1.20 per share, a year earlier.

Excluding items, the company earned $1.41 per share, which beat analysts' average estimate of $1.37 per share.

Revenue rose about 6.6 percent to $5.48 billion, short of analyst estimates of $5.49 billion.

The company said it cut 500 jobs in marketing, finance and human resources in the first quarter.

Shares of Time Warner Cable closed down 0.6 percent to $92.19 on the NYSE on Thursday.

BELGRADE (Reuters) - Serbia raised the possibility of a referendum on Thursday on an accord to end the ethnic partition of its former Kosovo province, a high-stakes gamble that could cost Belgrade talks on joining the European Union.

The April 19 deal between Serbia and its majority-Albanian former province won Belgrade a preliminary green light for accession talks this year, but the bloc wants progress on the ground before taking a final decision on the talks in late June.

The accession process would drive reform and help lure investors to Serbia's ailing economy. But the accord faces resistance from some 50,000 Serbs in northern Kosovo, a region bristling with guns and deep animosity.

Trying to mollify them, Serbia's government said it was prepared to hold a popular vote. The decision would depend on talks next week with Kosovo Serb leaders, Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic told a news conference.

"If they pledge on Tuesday to accept the results of a referendum, the decision of the majority of the people, then we will be ready in 15 days and we'll put an end to that story," Vucic said after meeting a delegation of Kosovo Serb mayors.

Under the accord, the northern Serb pocket will be integrated into Kosovo's legal system five years after the former province, which is 90 percent Albanian, declared independence from Serbia with the backing of the West.

Hardline nationalists and the Serbian Orthodox Church have accused the government of betrayal, but there has been little sign of a major backlash.

According to the results of an opinion poll released on Thursday, 57 percent of Serbian citizens support the accord. Twenty-nine percent of the 1,180 respondents oppose it, polling agency Faktor Plus said.

Serbia lost control of Kosovo in 1999 after 11 weeks of NATO air strikes to halt the massacre and expulsion of ethnic Albanian civilians by Serbian forces trying to crush a guerrilla insurgency.

But Belgrade retained a fragile grip on the northern pocket, where Serbs have lived largely as part of the Serbian state.

Desperate for the economic boost of closer EU ties, Serbia last week agreed to cede control over the north, and won a preliminary green light for the start of membership talks with the 27-nation bloc, probably later this year.

Kosovo Serb leaders pledged to resist.

"We will continue our peaceful battle, because we are in the right," said Slavisa Ristic, mayor of the northern Kosovo municipality of Zvecan.

"We cannot accept a change of identity by force," he said, according to the Tanjug state news agency.
