In this article, I wanted to share one of the tricks I've used both as a result of reflecting on my own metacognitive processes and also because of what I have learned from students.

The scenario is the three lines of defence against disease. Most students need to learn about these at some stage and they can be quite complex and hard to recall. One thing that is fairly well accepted is that linking something new with something familiar is more likely to ensure it will be found again when it is required. This is the beauty of analogies. Analogies take something familiar and wrap it around something unfamiliar so we are more likely to remember it.

The analogy I use for the three lines of defence against disease is a club located inside a fenced off property, protected by a dog.

The fence is like the first line of defence. It is a physical barrier. It may occasionally develop a weak point, or even a hole and you may even be able to climb over it with a little effort. It may have a gate or two which might open occasionally, so if you are quick, you can sneak through. For most purposes, this parallels the first line of defence; the skin and mucous membranes. Like the fence they are a physical (or chemical) barrier and like the fence they can occasionally be breached, either through natural openings or by temporary holes which are opened up.

The dog is like the second line of defence. The dog is not particularly nice, except to anyone he nike zoom kd iv for sale recognises. Anyone he doesn't recognise he attacks. Lots of noise and angry growling will be produced and he will chase you around until he catches you or sees you off. But this is also a key component of the learning exercise. Examining any model for its limitations encourages students to think deeply enough about the subject to understand why something may tell part but not the whole story.

Understanding how our students learn and how we can make use of techniques and technologies for science education will improve the outcomes for both the students and their teachers. This is the value of integrating technology into learning. As a classically trained guitarist, I was very much bent on standard tuning because theoretically, everything you need to get the sounds you want is there.

However, what I have learned in recent months is that it's not necessarily what you can do with standard tuning, rather, what tones and chords you can't get by using it all of the time. Alternative tunings offer a new, and often easier method of playing chords and a very rich tone that is unmatched.

I mention chords for an important reason. You may have noticed that the guitar isn't laid out in a fashion that allows for easy access to every single chord combination. According to theory we can achieve incredible sounding chords but the problem is having the technique to stretch that far. Some of those chords are often impossible for any of us to play. Tuning your guitar to different tones bridges that gap between theory and technique, allowing us to play new chords.

Altered tunings involve playing around with the notes that your guitar is currently tuned to. An altered tuning will use different notes in our musical vocabulary and replace the notes in standard tuning.
