"What good is it to save the planet if humanity suffers?" CEO Rex Tillerson said at the oil giant's annual meeting Wednesday.

Tillerson jousted with environmental activists who proposed that the company set goals to reduce emissions from its products and operations.

Shareholders sided with the company and voted nearly 3-to-1 to reject the proposal.

By a 4-to-1 ratio, shareholders defeated a resolution to explicitly ban discrimination against gays. The Exxon board had argued that the company already banned discrimination of any type and didn't need to add language regarding gays.

It was the 16th defeat for Exxon resolutions on discrimination against gays and the seventh on greenhouse emissions.

Since Tillerson replaced Lee Raymond as CEO in 2006, Exxon has softened the tone of its public comments but not its skepticism about climate change. Tillerson said that in the past decade the average temperature "hasn't really changed," and he repeated his optimism that technology will solve the problem.

The average global temperature rose one quarter of a degree Fahrenheit from the 10 years that ended in 2002 to the decade that ended in 2012, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. However, the decade of 2000-2009 was the hottest on record, and nine of the 10 hottest years have occurred since 2001.

Activists argued that climate change will result in more severe weather. Patricia Daley, a member of the New Jersey-based group of Dominican nuns that proposed the climate-change resolution, cited last year's East Coast hurricane.

"I had to evacuate a lot of old nuns because of Superstorm Sandy," Daley said. She said that with rising carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere, "we're in desperate territory right now."

Shareholders voted down a resolution calling for Exxon to report details about its use of hydraulic fracturing, a method of boosting natural gas production that critics argue can contaminate water supplies with toxic chemicals.

Environmentalists also criticized the company's production of oil from tar sands in Canada, which they said adds to greenhouse gas emissions. They urged Exxon to invest more in wind, solar and geothermal energy. The company has made forays into alternative energy sources but argues that the world will be dependent on oil for decades.

The ban on bias based on sexual orientation was proposed by a retirement fund for New York state employees. George Wong, an official for the New York comptroller's office, said the lack of specific protection for gays hurt the company's ability to recruit employees from the widest pool of talent.

Wong said Exxon discriminates by refusing to extend spousal benefits to employees who marry a gay partner in New York, where same-sex marriage is legal.

Exxon's annual meeting once drew dozens of protesters from environmental and human-rights groups, but only a few demonstrators appeared outside Wednesday's meeting in an ornate symphony hall. Inside, there were few sparks or angry exchanges. The characters have become familiar to each other. After Daley finished speaking, Tillerson said from the stage, "Thank you, Sister Pat."

Exxon Mobil is coming off its second-biggest profit ever, having earned $44.9 billion in 2012.

The shares rose 2 percent last year, the same as rival Chevron Corp. This year, through Tuesday, Exxon shares had gained 7 percent while Chevron shares had risen 17 percent.

Exxon shares fell 30 cents to $92.08 in trading Wednesday. They were still near the high end of their 52-week range of $77.13 to $93.67.

"Photograph," which will be released as an e-book on Apple's iBookstore on June 12, will coincide with a Grammy Museum exhibit on Starr, entitled "Ringo: Peace & Love," the book's publishers said on Wednesday.

A limited-edition hand-bound book signed by Starr will be available for purchase in December.

The book will include photographs from the musician's childhood in Liverpool, England, to his road to fame as part of the Fab Four, with Paul McCartney, John Lennon and George Harrison.

"These are shots that no one else could have," Starr, 72, said in a statement.

Highlights from the collection include behind-the-scenes candids of the Beatles in their daily lives and Starr's travel photography as the band toured the world.

Starr has also recorded videos featuring commentary to accompany the e-book.

The three House of Lords peers were covertly filmed in a media sting offering to ask parliamentary questions, lobby ministers and host events in prestigious parliament premises in exchange for payment by what they were told were lobbyists acting for companies.

All three, two from the main opposition Labour Party and one from the Ulster Unionist Party, denied breaking the chamber's rules but their parties took swift action against them.

Another undercover media investigation had already forced a member of the lower house of parliament, Patrick Mercer, to resign from the ruling Conservative Party and seek legal advice.

The government of Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservatives and its junior coalition partner the Liberal Democrats had pledged in 2010 to introduce the register, which would regulate lobbyists and give constituents the power to force lawmakers to resign in cases of serious misconduct.

But it was not mentioned by Queen Elizabeth in an annual speech in May setting out the government's legislative plans.

Clegg, leader of the Liberal Democrats, said the government would press ahead with the reform.

"It will happen. Having consulted on the proposal, the detail is being looked at thoroughly in government," he wrote in the Daily Telegraph newspaper on Monday.

TORONTO (Reuters) - Between the army of reporters camped at his door and an exodus of top aides, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has endured a tough two weeks since allegations surfaced that he was caught smoking crack cocaine on video, something he staunchly denies.

For North America's fourth-largest city, however, it's been mostly business as usual thanks to a "weak mayor" political system that limits the executive's influence and puts more power in the hands of the city council. Council meetings on city business and other day-to-day operations have carried on regardless of the ruckus at City Hall.

To pass a motion in council, the Toronto mayor must secure the support of a majority of councilors. And if the council votes against his wishes, Ford has no power to veto or overturn that decision.

"The mayor is the chief executive officer - he presides at meetings and is the person that does ribbon cuttings," said John Mascarin, a municipal law expert with Aird & Berlis LLP in Toronto. "But the mayor generally doesn't have more than a single vote at council."

The post is more ceremonial than in other large North American cities like New York and Chicago where mayors have the power to veto any bill approved by the city councils. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has embraced the "strong mayor" system to advance his public health agenda, including requiring fast-food restaurants to post calorie counts and barring restaurants from cooking with trans fats.

No stranger to controversy in his political career, Ford made international headlines after the Toronto Star and Gawker Media reported on May 16 that they had seen a video that purports to show the mayor using illegal drugs.

Ford issued a denial on Friday after several city councilors and allies encouraged him to confront the issue directly.

"There has been a serious accusation from the Toronto Star that I use crack cocaine. I do not use crack cocaine, nor am I an addict of crack cocaine," he told a news conference.

Reuters cannot confirm the existence of the video or its content. A spokesman for the Toronto police said on Thursday they continue to monitor the situation but gave no further comment.

The crack allegations could cause Ford to lose allies, analysts say, making the last year of his already rocky term even tougher than previous ones.

LOSING ALLIES

Ford enjoys a hard core of support from a segment of Toronto voters, particularly in the suburbs, who lifted him to power in 2010 on a platform of controlling spending and cutting taxes, along the line of the Tea Party agenda in the United States.

"You can think of him as the Tea Party candidate," said Ivor Tossell, a journalist and author of the biography "The Gift of Ford". "He arrived at the height of the Tea Party movement, in the height of the recession and he had a clear message that resonated at that moment."

Early on his mayoral term, Ford was successful in controlling Toronto's City Hall, wrangling the right-leaning votes to repeal an unpopular vehicle registration tax and privatized garbage collection for half of the city.

But things soon turned sour. The mayor's plan to build a subway in suburban Toronto was voted down by council, which chose instead to build above-ground light-rail train lines.

The council has always been divided, with the city's downtown core mainly represented by left-leaning councilors and suburban areas like Etobicoke represented by right-leaning councilors like Ford. But a series of missteps has eroded Ford's support among councilors on the right.

"What this scandal has done, I think, is weakened support for the mayor among those councilors who he could count as pretty durable allies," said Phil Triadafilopoulos, a professor of political science at the University of Toronto Scarborough.

Indeed, Ford lost a key vote last week to bring a full-service casino to the city. And his executive committee, which decides council's agenda, was overruled on a decision not to debate new funding for a regional transit plan in council.

The mayor often touts his own austerity record, and under his administration staffing has been sharply trimmed at City Hall, saving the city millions. And, for the first time in more than 15 years, Toronto's operating budget was balanced in 2013 without using the prior year's surplus.

But the anti-tax Ford was also required to raise property taxes by 2 percent in 2013 and 2.5 percent in 2012, with business taxes and transit fares also climbing. He did not raise taxes in 2011, instead adjusting "user fees".

While Ford continues to chair city meetings and the council appears to be getting work done, things are less smooth in his own office. Ford fired his chief of staff last week and then his press secretary and deputy press secretary quit on Monday.

Ford is, so far, benefiting from the fact that the mysterious video has not surfaced for mass consumption. Three reporters from two separate media outlets say they have seen it. Gawker Media, which was the first outlet to publish the story, raised over $200,000 to buy the video and post it online, but its editor says he has lost contact with the owner.

"If it doesn't show up pretty soon, I think people had better maybe curtail their allegations because that video is needed to show there's hard proof of anything," Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday, a Ford ally, told Reuters. "The more time goes on, the less likely its going to appear."

In the end, as long as the city continues to function, some voters may not care much about the drug use allegations. Ford's poll numbers have not changed since before the scandal broke, according to Forum Research Inc, though he does risk losing the 2014 election to a left-leaning candidate.

Marion Barry, the Washington D.C. mayor, was arrested on drug charges after he was videotaped smoking crack cocaine in 1990. He served six months in jail and then went on to be re-elected as mayor and continues to serve as a popular city councilor in the U.S. capital.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - EU antitrust regulators are seeking information whether Apple's iPhone distribution deals with mobile telecoms operators may be aimed at shutting out rival smartphones makers, in a move which could lead to a formal investigation into Apple.

In a nine-page questionnaire sent to mobile telecoms companies last Friday and obtained by Reuters, the European Commission said such behavior may breach EU antitrust rules.

The questionnaire followed informal complaints from telecoms operators against Apple late last year related to handset subsidies and marketing for carrying its smartphones and tablets, sources have told Reuters.

Such surveys are a typical procedure in antitrust cases which helps the Commission determine whether to open a case against companies or reject complaints.

"The Commission has information indicating that Apple and mobile network operators have concluded distribution agreements which may potentially lead to the foreclosure of other smartphone manufacturers from the market," the questionnaire said.

Telecoms operators were asked whether Apple obliged them to buy a minimum volume of iPhones, provide preferential treatment for marketing iPhones, set a certain level of subsidies and ensure Apple receives the same or better terms given to rivals.

Regulators were also keen to know if Apple restricted the companies from using the iPhone5 in their 4G/LTE networks. The deadline for replies is June 17.

European and U.S. operators typically pay hefty subsidies to smartphone makers including Apple. Customers get discounts on such devices in return for signing on to two-year wireless contracts, a key source of revenues for operators.

Smartphones account for 49.3 percent of mobile phones sold globally in the first quarter, according to research company Gartner. Samsung Electronic is the world's most-used smartphone brand.

But the seller of Polo and other brands saw its stock fall Thursday because its revenue fell below Wall Street expectations amid poor weather, economic challenges in the U.S. and abroad and the move to eliminate some businesses to focus on the most profitable ones.

The results, announced Thursday, show how the New York based luxury company is seeing increasing profits since the first half of its fiscal year, when cotton costs soared and the company was bearing the brunt of the costs of eliminating certain businesses such as its Rugby brand. But it's still navigating the rough patches of a choppy global economy.

"Our better-than-expected profitability in the fourth quarter and full year fiscal 2013 periods is a direct result of the strong operational management of our global teams," Roger Farah, president and chief operating officer, said in a statement. "Enhanced profit flow-through was achieved despite sustained macroeconomic challenges and strategic decisions that mitigated revenue growth during the year."

The New York-based company reported net income of $127.2 million, or $1.37 per share, for the three months that ended March 30. That compares with $94.4 million, or 99 cents per share, a year earlier.

Revenue rose a slim 1.2 percent to $1.64 billion. Excluding the impact of strategies to eliminate some businesses as well as the effects from unfavorable foreign currency translation, revenue increased 5 percent.

Analysts had expected earnings of $1.31 per share on revenue of $1.7 billion.

Ralph Lauren said that its wholesale segment's sales slipped 4 percent to $796 million compared with the year-ago period. That was primarily due to the discontinuation of the American Living brand, sold at J.C. Penney stores, and a planned reduction in shipments to certain European customers.

Sales at its own Ralph Lauren stores rose 7 percent to $804 million from $752 million a year earlier.

The company expects sales to improve. The company projects revenue to rise by a low single-digit percentage for the current quarter and anywhere from 4 percent to 7 percent for the full year.

The company ended the quarter with 388 directly operated stores 116 Ralph Lauren stores, 50 Club Monaco stores and 213 Polo factory stores. The company also operated 494 concession shop locations worldwide at the end of the quarter. In addition to company-operated locations, international licensing partners operated 62 Ralph Lauren stores and 32 dedicated shops as well as 64 Club Monaco stores and shops at the end of the fourth quarter.

Shares fell 2.3 percent, or $4.37 per share, to close at $183.69 Thursday.

Roy, who won two Stanley Cups with the Montreal Canadiens and two with Colorado before retiring in 2003 after a 19-year career, reached an agreement in principal to become the sixth head coach in Avalanche history.

"This is an unbelievable day for me," Roy, 47, said in a statement released by the Avalanche. "It's a new and exciting challenge that I am really looking forward to.

The Canadian takes over a struggling Colorado team that has not made the playoffs since 2010 and finished the 2012-13 NHL season in last place in the Western Conference with the second-worst record in the league.

Roy will also serve as the club's vice president of hockey operations and will re-unite with former Avalanche teammate Joe Sakic, who is Colorado's executive vice president of hockey operations.

"All along Patrick was our top candidate and we are thrilled that he has decided to accept this offer," said Sakic.

"Patrick has a great hockey mind, is a tremendous coach and there is no one more passionate about this game. He will bring that winning attitude to our dressing room to help this young team grow."

Roy, the only player to win the Conn Smythe Trophy three times as most valuable player in the Stanley Cup playoffs, has spent the last eight seasons as head coach and general manager of the Quebec Remparts in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

He guided the Remparts to a 348-196-0 record and also to the 2006 Memorial Cup title as the Canadian Hockey League champions.

Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006, Roy retired with the most regular season wins ever in the league (551), a number that now ranks second of all-time. His 151 postseason wins have never been eclipsed by a goaltender.

Bulger's lawyers wanted U.S. District Judge Denise Casper to order prosecutors to turn over the name of the informant mentioned in an FBI report from 2000. They say the informant gave information about former Bulger associates Kevin Weeks and John Martorano that could contradict their testimony at trial.

In an order filed Friday, Casper denied the request, saying the informant is not the only person able to bolster or weaken the testimony of the government witnesses.

But Casper ordered prosecutors to turn over documents about any follow-up investigation on the informants allegations.

The company unveiled the Xbox One, an entertainment console that wants to be the one system households will need for games, television, movies, sports and other entertainment. It will go on sale later this year, for an undisclosed price.

For the past two years, Microsoft's Xbox 360 has outsold its rivals. But it's been eight years since that machine came out, and Microsoft is the last of the three major console makers to unveil a new system. In those eight years, Apple launched the iPhone and the iPad, "FarmVille" rose and fell and tablets began to threaten desktop computers, changing how people interact with games and beyond.

Now, the stakes are high as Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo are all using their latest machines not only to draw gamers but also to command the living room. The goal is to extend their reach beyond loyal legions of hardcore gamers and to become as important to our lives at home as smartphones have become to our lives on the go.

Don Mattrick, Microsoft's president of interactive entertainment business, said the company has spent the past four years working on an "all-in-one home entertainment system."

At an hour-long unveiling at the company's Redmond, Wash., headquarters on Tuesday, Microsoft executives used voice controls to switch back and forth seamlessly between watching live TV, listening to music, playing a movie and browsing the Internet all while running apps for stuff like fantasy football and Skype chats on the side of the screen.

"It really extends the home entertainment experience," Gartner analyst Brian Blau said.

He said the console seems to appeal to "more than just a core gamer in the family" and should be of interest to all types of audiences, from sports players to TV viewers to those who are "social and want to share things."

The Xbox One unveiling follows Nintendo Co.'s launch of the Wii U in November and Sony Corp.'s tease in February of the upcoming PlayStation 4. Each of the new consoles has shifted away from simply serving as gaming machines, as they incorporate streaming media apps and social networking features.

People will be able to connect their cable or satellite set-top box and watch TV through the Xbox One. It will have its own channel guide and allow viewers to change channels by voice command.

Senior Vice President Yusuf Mehdi demonstrated how the console switched quickly between channels after saying show names such as "Mary and Martha" or commands like "watch MTV." His voice command of "What's on HBO?" brought up the channel guide for HBO.

"No more memorizing channels or hunting for the remote control," Mehdi said.

The interface for the TV goes well beyond the functionality in the Wii U, which still requires users to press buttons to change the input source on the TV. Xbox One seamlessly flipped between games, movies and TV shows with voice commands.

In addition to the console, Microsoft unveiled a new version of its camera-based Kinect system with better motion and voice detection, including the ability to recognize faces, tell if you're smiling or talking and gauge your heart rate. In a demonstration, the new sensor detected up to seven people in front of it. Microsoft said the new Kinect will be included with the Xbox One and is deeply integrated into the system, but it won't necessarily always be watching users in their living rooms.

"There's the ability for you to manage the privacy settings so you can turn it off," Marc Whitten, Microsoft's chief product officer of interactive entertainment business, said in an interview in his office after Tuesday's presentation. "Just like the 360, the biggest thing for us is that you are in control of your privacy."

The company also introduced a more ergonomic Xbox controller, with a slightly different layout from the Xbox 360 controller and trigger buttons that vibrate. The new console will also add the ability to play Blu-ray discs, matching what Sony has in its older PlayStation 3.

The Xbox One won't require a constant connection to the Internet, but having it will be useful for many of the gaming and entertainment features. The Xbox has been popular largely because of its Xbox Live service, which lets users play games online with other players with annual plans that cost as much as $60 a year.

"The box wants to connect to the Internet," Whitten said. "That said, we understand the Internet is flakey. It doesn't always work. We want to make sure you can still play your games, watch movies and watch TV if the Internet is down."

Despite talk that Microsoft might restrict the use of games previously owned by others, the company confirmed that the Xbox One will indeed play used games, but it didn't provide details on how that would work. It said games for the Xbox 360 won't work on the new system because the underlying technology is different, though the company said it will continue to make games for the older machine. Whitten said the Xbox 360 "is going to be incredibly vibrant for some time to come."

Among the games previewed for Xbox One were the military shooter "Call of Duty: Ghosts" from Activision Blizzard Inc.,soccer extravaganza "FIFA 14" from Electronic Arts Inc. and racing simulator "Forza Motorsport 5" and time bender "Quantum Break," both from Microsoft Game Studios. Microsoft said more games will be shown at next month's E3 video game conference in Los Angeles.

The company said there will be more than 15 games available exclusively on the Xbox One in its first year, eight of them new franchises. In recent years, the Xbox has been the exclusive home to such popular gaming franchises as sci-fi shooter "Halo" and alien shoot-'em-up "Gears of War."

Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter said Tuesday's presentation was more general than what Microsoft will likely give at E3, where games will be central as thousands of game industry insiders, bloggers and journalists gather for the annual industry conference.

"They didn't focus on games," he said. "They focused on everything else."

That everything else includes a multiyear agreement between Microsoft and the National Football League to develop new interactive viewing experiences for pro football games through such products as the Xbox One and Microsoft's Surface tablet computer. Fans will be able to watch games, chat with other fans, view statistics, access highlights in real time and gather fantasy information about players and teams all on a single screen. For those who prefer multiple screens, fans can get an even deeper experience on mobile devices such as tablets.

Microsoft is also branching into creating original content beyond games, following the trend of other technology companies such as Amazon.com Inc. and Netflix Inc. Director Steven Spielberg will produce a TV series based on the "Halo" games.

The original Xbox debuted in 2001, and its high-definition successor premiered in 2005. The Xbox represents a small fraction of Microsoft's overall revenue, but it is an important consumer-facing business for Microsoft and offers a way to direct traffic to other Microsoft-owned services, including Skype. Microsoft's stock fell 23 cents, or less than 1 percent, to close Tuesday at $34.85.

Nintendo kicked off the next generation of gaming in November with the launch of the Wii U, the successor to the popular Wii system. The Wii U features an innovative tablet-like controller, though its graphics is on par with the previous-generation Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3. Nintendo said the console sold just 3.45 million units by the end of March, well below expectations.

Sony was next, teasing plans for its upcoming PlayStation 4 without showing the actual box at a February event in New York. The reaction to that console, which featured richer graphics and more social features, was mixed. The PS4 is expected by the holidays.

Microsoft didn't waste any time showing off the Xbox One console, new Kinect sensor and Xbox controller at the beginning of Tuesday's presentation.

Hare investors try to sprint to the finish line of a comfortable retirement without girding their portfolios against the perils of frequent ups and downs in asset value. So they tend to lag far behind tortoise investors, who take these precautions, which I'll explain in a moment.

Volatility reflects uncertainty, and markets tend to punish uncertainty with lower prices. Yet just because an investment is volatile doesn't mean it has no place in your portfolio. Because they may be less likely to go down with other assets in the portfolio, volatile investments may add highly beneficial variety, known as .

Let's say you own tech stocks like Apple and IBM. Adding more tech stocks to your portfolio doesn't decrease overall risk, so you add a gold-mining stock instead. Though highly volatile in itself, the gold-mining stock is less likely to go up or down with tech stocks, so it increases the portfolio's diversification.

Because there's little correlation between gold-mining stocks' price movements with those of tech stocks, these categories are said to have a low correlation.That sounds complicated, but you can easily look up theto see whether they're correlated, and if so, how closely.

Aware of the downsides of volatility, tortoises avoid it by assembling highly diversified portfolios. That means traditional investments such as U.S. stocks and bonds, mixed with a dash ofThese may include emerging market stocks, Treasury bonds and real estate securities.The price movements of these investments have a history of not being highly correlated with U.S. stocks or bonds.

Tortoises are like a savvy retailer on a tropical resort island who wisely sells umbrellas as well as sunscreen to help cover losses during rainy periods. Every once in while, the rain falls on everything -- which is what happened in late 2008, much to the dismay of investors. In the financial meltdown, stocks, bonds and real estate both in the US and abroad swooned, leaving little quarter for investors.

Tortoise-style investors add a touch of alternative investments, knowing this may cut their overall returns some years, but they'll sleep more peacefully with the knowledge that it can counter-balance heavy losses in traditional investments.

Hares aren't focused on this balanced approach. Instead, they assemble highly aggressive portfolios of assets that tend to rise or fall in lockstep. They're not concerned with cutting their losses because, compelled by greed, they're not planning to have any losses ior they believe they can defy gravity.This was not unlike the employees who loaded up on their company's shares before the recession, only to see their investment go south along with their job.

Like the Aesop's hare, hare investors are overconfident and turn a blind eye to the ravages of volatility, which take a long time to recover from.Tortoises, having sustained less damage, continue their slow but steady progress.

The math of recovering from hits may astonish you. Let's say your portfolio loses 33 percent of its value, leaving you with two thirds of what you had. Many believe they'd be back where they started if they gain 33 percent. But this gain wouldn't restore their losses. They would actually need to make a 50 percent gain to get back to where they started. The reason is that the gain is based on a lower value than what you started with.

Heavy gains followed by just a large losses from volatile investments is comparable to the hare in Aesop's fable sprinting for periods and then, winded, lying down to take a nap. Like the tortoise, investors with adequately diversified portfolios don't tend to need as much recovery time.

Such losses are even more damaging than they appear at first blush. Not only do hare portfolios lose time that could be used to make progress toward the goal, but they also miss out on the . Though tortoises' gains may be far lower than those made by hares during their sprints, they're more likely to enjoy the benefits of compounding.

These awkward reptiles plod steadily toward the finish line while the halting progress of hares leaves them far behind.
