SYRACUSE, N.Y. - While making the pitch on his newfor a second time, President Obama was interrupted by pro-Bradley Manning hecklers at Henninger High School in Syracuse, N.Y., Thursday evening.

Two women holding a giant "Free " sign yelled at the president in the middle of his speech. It was unclear what the women were saying, but they were escorted out of the gymnasium to applause from the crowd.

When the women started shouting, the president said, "I hear you," and tried to calm down the crowd. After the two women left, Obama called the hecklers "polite" before continuing with his college affordability speech.

"Can I just say that, as hecklers go, that young lady was very polite. She was! And she brought up an issue of importance, and that's part of what America is all about," Obama said. "But what America is also all about is making sure that middle-class families succeed."

After stops Thursday in Buffalo and Syracuse, the president will continue his bus tour on Friday with a town hall at Binghamton University and a speech at Lackawanna College in Scranton, Pa., hometown of Vice President Joe Biden, who will join the president after spending the week in Houston with his son, Beau Biden, who underwent a medical procedure on Tuesday.

Susan Kazmaier said Friday that her father died of natural causes Thursday at a Boston hospital. He had been living in Concord, Mass.

Kazmaier played halfback for Princeton and as a senior in 1951 won the Heisman Trophy in a landslide, receiving 506 first-place votes and 1,777 points, which was a record at the time. He also won the Maxwell Award as the nation's best player, and was The Associated Press male athlete of the year.

In his final two college seasons, the Tigers went 18-0. When he was done playing, he was Princeton's career leader in yards rushing (1,950) and ranked second in yards passing (2,404). His career completion percentage of 59.5 still ranks third at Princeton.

He was voted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1966 and in 2008 Princeton retired his No. 42, a jersey number also worn by Basketball Hall of Famer Bill Bradley.

"Notwithstanding all of the achievements in his athletic, business and philanthropic endeavors, Dick remained one of the most self-effacing individuals I have ever met," Princeton Athletic Director Gary Walters said in a statement. "He never sought the spotlight and always led in a thoughtful and ethical manner."

"Indeed, Dick was also the father of six daughters and he became a major force behind the scenes as he helped to implement the Title IX Legislation that was passed in 1972 in order to provide equal competitive opportunities for women in college."

Three of Kazmaier's six daughters with wife Patricia graduated from Princeton, including Patty Kazmaier, who played hockey for the Tigers and helped them to three consecutive Ivy League championships in the early 1980s.

After Patty died of a rare blood disease in 1990, Dick Kazmaier and the USA Hockey Foundation created the Patty Kazmaier Award, which has been given to the top player in NCAA Division I women's ice hockey since 1998.

Kazmaier was an Ohio native from the small town of Maumee. After his brilliant career at Princeton, he passed on chance to play in the NFL after being drafted by the Chicago Bears in 1952. Instead, he attended business school at Harvard. He also served three years in the Navy.

"His strongest characteristic was loyalty and his greatest talent was friendship," Pulitzer Prize-winning author and former classmate John McPhee said in a statement released by the school.

Kazmaier went on to found Kazmaier Associates, Inc., an investment and consulting firm that specializes in sports marketing and products and is based in Concord, Mass.

"Even if my dad was your average Joe the plumber I would have loved him just as much," Susan Kazmaier said in a brief telephone interview Friday. "He was a very caring and supportive father. In this daughter's heart, he was just Dad."

Kazmaier served as president of the National Football Foundation, which runs the College Hall of Fame, from 1974-84 and was chairman of the President's Council on Physical Fitness under Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush.

"It's certainly an honor to have worn the same number as him. He was somebody that I admired (when) playing football in high school and in the sandlot when I was a kid," Bradley told the Daily Princetonian in 2006. "He had won the Heisman Trophy, and he went to Princeton, and I wanted to be him."

Pinker says the mindset of science eliminates errors by open debate, peer review, and double-blind methods, and especially, experimentation. But experiments require repetition and control over all relevant variables. We can experiment on individual behavior, but not with history or macroeconomics.

Isaiah Berlin . In science, it means reliably causal. In history, it means a looser, narrative kind of causation, a useful explanation of the complex web of factors affecting a particular situation. Since Plato many have privileged universal timeless truths. But historys truths are typically particular and time bound, describing changes through time.

Pinkers science needs types and theories. It assumes that phenomena . But Berlin noted that . Nomothetic means fit for law-like generalizations, having reliably repeatable regularities. Idiographic means much the same as the Hebrew word daat:(not via theories or types). ()

Physics is fortunate to enjoy a kind of closedness that human life lacks. . And nothing it studies innovates. History and economics study things that can change how they act and react. So the methods of the inanimate sciences face extra challenges when used on people. Even statistics and probability cant always help. Previously measured distributions can be upset by the spread of behavioral changes, making social systems less predictable.

Jerome Kagan notes that inanimate equilibria. Many economists still use such methods. And macroeconomists try to model events essentially as complex as world wars, using (insanely by Pinkers standards) the language of physics.

The Oxford English Dictionary says science originally just meant knowledge. In the Middle Ages, the seven liberal arts (grammar, logic, rhetoric, arithmetic, music, geometry, astronomy) were also called the seven liberal sciences. Shakespeare used science in that sense: .

We risk blinding ourselves with science, in its now narrower highly reliable form. It is dazzling. But it also has limits. Its tools dont fit all situations. Economics, especially the macro kind, has history-like aspects. Its narratives might be woven with data, but not everything that counts can be counted. It must deal with different kinds of change that (to paraphrase Shakespeare) were never dreamt of in our physics. Perhaps this limits economics to moderately reliable maxims.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Shares of genetic testing products maker Nanosphere Inc. plunged more than 30 percent Wednesday after an analyst downgraded company shares on disappointing earnings and outlook.

THE SPARK: Jefferies analyst Brandon Couillard downgraded company shares to "Hold," citing disappointing second-quarter revenue of $1.9 million. That was more than 10 percent below analyst estimates.

The company also slashed its 2013 revenue forecast by 25 percent to $10.5 million from $14 million, reflecting slower sales for the company's bloodstream infection test. The test runs on the company's Verigene testing system. Couillard noted that the company now expects to place 175 systems this year, down from the 225 units cited in the company's initial forecast.

Calls placed to Nanosphere Wednesday afternoon were not immediately returned.

THE BIG PICTURE: The Northbrook, Ill., company's Verigene system runs molecular tests used to diagnose infections, viruses and other conditions. The company sold 166 Verigene systems in 2012.

SHARE ACTION: Shares of Nanosphere Inc. fell 86 cents, or 29.3 percent, to $2.07.

James, a former television executive, surpassed regulars on the list, including James Patterson, Danielle Steel and Stephen King, with estimated earnings of $95 million in the year to June 2013, thanks to the titillating trilogy.

"The e-book format was a key factor, giving readers an easy way to purchase sex-filled sequels - and a discreet way to read them in public," according to forbes.com.

Former No. 1 Patterson came in second with earnings of $91 million, while Suzanne Collins, the author of "The Hunger Games" and the five-book series "The Underland Chronicles," was a distant third at $55 million.

The 2012 "The Hunger Games" blockbuster film, an adaptation of the novel, grossed $684 million worldwide.

Fox TV talk show host Bill O'Reilly, the author of "Killing Lincoln" and "Killing Kennedy," came in fourth with $28 million and Steel, with 128 book titles to her credit, was No. 5 with $26 million.

Dan Brown's "Inferno" was the best-selling book of 2013 so far, putting him in ninth place with $22 million. King just made it into the top 10 with earnings of $20 million. The hit U.S. TV series "Under the Dome" is based on King's science fiction novel of the same name.

BRASILIA (Reuters) - The United States pledged on Tuesday that Brazil and other allies will get answers about American communications surveillance aimed at thwarting terrorism, but gave no indication it would change the way it gathers such information.

Secretary of State John Kerry urged Brazil not to let recent revelations of secret internet surveillance by the United States derail growing trade, diplomatic and cultural relations between the two largest economies in the Americas.

"Brazil is owed answers and will get them," Kerry said on his first visit to Brasilia as the top U.S. diplomat.

"Brazil and other countries will understand exactly what we are doing, why and how - and we will work together to make sure that whatever is done is done in a way that respects our friends and our partners," he added.

Brazilian Foreign Minister Antonio Patriota said his country needs more than explanations for the recent disclosures of surveillance of emails and telephone conversations of Brazilians by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA).

"We need to stop practices that violate the sovereignty (of nations), relations of trust between states and individual liberties," Patriota said at a news conference after meeting with Kerry.

"Today we face a new type of challenge in our relations, a challenge related to the news of interception of the electronic and telephone communications of Brazilians," Patriota said.

"If this challenge is not resolved satisfactorily, we run the risk of casting a shadow of distrust on our work," he said.

Kerry's first official visit to South America as secretary of state is taking place under the cloud of revelations about U.S. global surveillance programs made by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, who was granted a year's asylum by Russia on August 1.

The spying has sparked particular concern in Latin American countries, many of which have long complained about U.S. infringements on their sovereignty. Brazil has been particularly vocal in its complaints.

Kerry was in the Brazilian capital to prepare for a state visit by President Dilma Rousseff to the White House in October that underscores the importance the United States gives to its ties with Brazil.

PROTECTING BRAZILIANS

Kerry said the United States gathers foreign intelligence of the type collected by all nations to protect their citizens, and U.S. intelligence has helped protect not just Americans but the populations of other countries, including Brazil.

Last month, the Brazilian newspaper O Globo published documents leaked by Snowden that showed that the NSA targeted Latin American countries with spying programs that can monitor billions of emails and phone calls for suspicious activity.

In Brazil, angry senators questioned the state visit that Rousseff plans to make to Washington on October 23, and the possible multibillion-dollar purchase of fighter jets from the United States.

The F/A-18 fighter jet made by Boeing Co had been favored to beat out French and Swedish warplane makers for the coveted contract, but a Brazilian official told Reuters that Brazil would not discuss the deal with the United States due to the distrust caused by the spying disclosures.

The surveillance controversy set off by Snowden has roiled relations between the United States and Brazil just as they seemed to be improving under Rousseff, a pragmatic leftist.

Relations between chilled under her predecessor and mentor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who drew Brazil closer to Latin America's leftist governments and to Iran.

The United States was the largest foreign investor in Brazil last year, with total accumulated investments of $100 billion. Two-way trade has increased 11 percent in the past five years to $59 billion a year.

Brazilian officials believe relations between the two countries are strong enough to put the spying matter behind them, though they want a better explanation than they have received so far from Washington on the extent of U.S. surveillance of Brazil's communications.

"Things are settling. It's something we just need to talk through," said a senior U.S. government official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The O Globo report based on Snowden's leaks "really set things off" because it played to elements in Brazil that are not pro-American, but most of Brazil's government and people are, the official said.

The Cavaliers on Tuesday did not release the terms of the deal but the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported it is worth $16.7 million over three years.

Bennett entered the draft after being voted the top freshman in the Mountain West Conference last season, when he averaged 16.1 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game for the University of Nevada at Las Vegas.

He made league history as the first Canadian-born player to be taken first in the draft.

Bennett joins fellow Canuck Tristan Thompson who was taken fourth overall by the Cavaliers at the 2011 draft.

Bennett was born in Toronto and the scouts like him because he is a strong rebounder and has a nice scoring touch.

He becomes just the second UNLV player to go number one after Larry Johnson, who was chosen first overall in 1991 by the Charlotte Hornets.

The Cavaliers are hoping Bennett can help them forget about the loss of LeBron James, who fled the city for Miami following the 2010 season.

James led Miami to an NBA championship this year and was named MVP of the finals.

Cleveland went 24-58 last season and has missed the playoffs for the past three seasons.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Ashton Kutcher may be best known for his goofier comedy roles in "That '70s Show" and "Two and a Half Men," but the actor takes a rare dramatic turn in new film "Jobs" as visionary Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

Kutcher, 35, who bears a strong physical resemblance to a young Jobs with his wavy dark hair, brown eyes and five o'clock shadow, told Reuters that as a fan of Jobs' work, he was surprised when learning details about the Apple CEO's life.

"When I read the script, Steve was a guy that I really admired, and he was not always being shown in the best light, and I was a little taken aback. I really admire who he is and what he's done. I want to in some ways protect the legacy of a guy that I admire," Kutcher said.

"I also had the challenge of playing a guy who very much is still in the zeitgeist ... I had to play the guy that became the guy that everybody remembers," he added.

"Jobs," directed by Joshua Michael Stern and out in theaters on Friday, outlines 30 defining years of Apple's co-founder, who revolutionized the way people listen to music with the iPod and home computers with the Apple Macintosh.

Jobs, who helped build Apple Inc into one of the world's most recognizable brands, died in 2011 aged 56 after battling pancreatic cancer.

The film chronicles Jobs' life from the year he dropped out of college in 1973 to the inception of Apple Computer Company with his friend Steve Wozniak three years later and Apple's subsequent rise to the forefront of the technology industry.

It also touches on aspects of Jobs' personal life, such as his rocky relationship with ex-girlfriend Chrisann Brennan, played by Ahna O'Reilly, and his initial refusal to accept paternity of their daughter, Lisa.

"We didn't shy away from being honest about Steve Jobs' gifts and being honest about Steve Jobs' faults," Kutcher said.

"We tried to tell the story that did justice insomuch as showed what his contribution was and also didn't shy away from showing that aspects of Steve Jobs that weren't so wonderful and beautiful and sexy," he added.

CONVEYING INTELLECT, IGNORING CRITICS

Kutcher has gained gravitas in Silicon Valley by investing in startups, such as social networks Skype and Foursquare with his venture capital fund A-Grade Investments.

He saw similarities between himself and Jobs, both as college dropouts with "an appreciation for art and technology."

But the actor, who studied Jobs' mannerisms, diet and gait for the role, said he found challenges in conveying the computing trailblazer's intellect.

"Steve Jobs is a lot more intelligent than I am, so playing a guy that's that brilliant, I was really afraid of undermining his brilliance with my performance," the actor said.

After "Jobs" premiered at Sundance Film Festival in Utah earlier this year, Kutcher received mixed reviews for his performance as the tech innovator.

Variety film critic Justin Chang said that while Kutcher carried a physical resemblance to Jobs, "the illusion never fully seizes to hold." The Hollywood Reporter's reviewer Justin Lowe said Kutcher "goes beyond" the physical resemblance to Jobs to "faithfully re-create ... physical mannerisms."

Kutcher said he didn't "care about critics," and instead found encouraging words with Apple veterans, who had worked closely with Jobs.

"We showed the film to the original Macintosh team. Their review was probably the most valuable one that I listened to ... A couple of them came up to me and said 'Thank you for giving us two more hours with Steve.' And that moved me and made me feel good about the work that we've done," the actor said.
