1 In NLDS Game 5 As Adam Wainwright Delivers Gem

1 In NLDS Game 5 As Adam Wainwright Delivers Gem VIDEO

Adam Wainwright went all the way on the mound and St. Louis got two run homers from David Freese and Matt Adams to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6 1 Wednesday night, advancing to the NL championship series for the third straight season.

Wainwright scattered eight hits in his second dominant win of the division series, coming through for the Cardinals in a winner take all Game 5. St. Louis gets to stay at home to open Andrei Markov Jersey the NLCS against the well rested Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night.

"I wanted it bad. It's probably the most nervous I've ever been," Wainwright said. "I don't get a whole lot of nerves when I pitch. Before I pitched today, I was pretty nervous."

By ending Pittsburgh's storybook season, the Cardinals improved to 8 1 when facing postseason elimination the past three years. They also won Game 5 of the NL division series in Washington last year even though Wainwright got rocked and at Philadelphia in 2011.

Freese homered in the second inning off rookie Gerrit Cole, and Adams connected in the eighth against reliever Mark Melancon to make it 5 1. Pete Kozma added an RBI infield single, and Wainwright finished it off by striking out Pedro Alvarez with two on.

"I'm just so fired up for this team and this city right now," Wainwright said. "Cardinal Youth Brian Gionta Jersey fans were rockin' today and I'm just fired up to be here."

Alvarez became the first major league player with an RBI in his first six postseason games on a fluke hit that caromed off first base in the seventh. But the Pirates, who stopped a record streak of 20 consecutive losing seasons this year, were held to one run in each of the final two games of their first playoff appearance since 1992.

"We were able to take a huge step forward this year in restoring the pride and the passion of the Pittsburgh Pirates' organization," manager Clint Hurdle said, "and rebonding our city with a ball team."

Despite their charming turnaround and a victory over Cincinnati in the NL wild card game, the Pirates haven't won a postseason series since the 1979 World Series.

Wainwright was helped by three double plays two when Pirates runners strayed too far on line drives. The right hander struck out six and walked one in a 107 pitch complete game.

"Every time we turned around, Wainwright got in the way tonight," Hurdle said. "We were able to be the at bats were better, the approach got better, but he kept making pitches. The last two games they kept us Authentic Andrei Markov Jersey off the plate."

Sidelined with an arm injury when the Cardinals won the 2011 World Series, Wainwright threw seven innings of three hit ball to beat Pittsburgh 9 1 in the series opener.

He is 4 0 with a 2.03 ERA and four saves in 15 career postseason games, including six starts. As a rookie closer in 2006, he helped the Cardinals win the World Series.

"It's hard not to think back about what happened in Game 5 last year. I just wanted to prove I could go out there and be a good playoff pitcher," Wainwright said.

The 23 year old Cole beat the Cardinals with an impressive effort in Game 2. They got to him early this time even though his fastball hit 100 mph in the first inning against Matt Holliday.

Freese made the kid Brian Gionta XL Jersey pay for a full count walk to Jon Jay with two outs in the second, lining a 1 2 pitch into the visitors' bullpen in left.

The Pirates had the bullpen up in the fourth after Yadier Molina's infield hit and a throwing error put runners on second and third. Cole gave up just three hits over five innings, but was lifted for a pinch hitter in the sixth.

Freese struggled this season to overcome a back injury in spring training and had nine homers and 60 RBIs. But just like teammate Carlos Beltran, he's an October star with seven homers, 29 RBIs and a .325 average in 36 career postseason games.

Adams' power hitting helped the Cardinals overcame a mid foot sprain to cleanup man Allen Craig in early September and he hammered a first pitch fastball from Melancon well over the right field wall for his first RBIs of the series.

The Pirates scratched out their lone run on two infield hits and the single by Alvarez that looked to be a harmless inning ending groundout before it hit the bag.

Freese was a hometown hero in 2011, both the NLCS and World Series MVP. He singlehandedly got the Cardinals to Game 7 of that World Series against Texas with a two run triple with two outs and two strikes in the ninth and then ended Game 6 with a leadoff homer in the 11th.

"He's a stud. He's a big time player at big time moments," Wainwright said. "And that's what we expect of him and that's what he continues to deliver."

The snapshot moment from the title run came when Freese joyously flung his helmet between the legs a few steps from the celebration waiting at the plate.

At 23 years, 31 days, Cole was the youngest NL pitcher to start Game 5 of a division series and the fifth youngest NL pitcher to start a winner take all postseason game, according to STATS.

Counting the postseason, Cole didn't allow a homer in six straight starts. That ended when Freese connected for a 2 0 lead in the second.

Starling Marte robbed Matt Carpenter of a hit with a diving catch near the left field line in the third.

Neil Walker drew a one out walk in the first off Wainwright, who issued just 35 walks in the regular season for third best in the majors and none in Game 1, but went no farther. Carpenter was perfectly positioned at second base to snare a soft liner by Alvarez, flipping to first for an easy double play.

NOTES: Lou Brock, clad in a red sport coat worn by all the Cardinals' Hall of Famers, bounced the ceremonial first pitch, with pitcher Joe Kelly making a nice scoop. . Josh Young, in town for the musical Evita, sang the national anthem. . This was the 24th meeting between the teams this season, with each team winning 12 times.

Adam WainwrightSt. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright (50) enters the locker room after the Cardinals defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 6 1 in Game 5 of a National League baseball division series, Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, in St. Louis.
100 things we love about Auckland

100 things we love about Auckland

Smith and Caughey

The last real old school department store, a genuine grand dame. Founded in 1880, their windows are works of art, their Christmas displays a treat and their sales (still, genteelly, called "fairs") legendary. Three levels of heaven on Queen St, whether it's a gift for you or someone you love, this is a great place to look. Along Queen St, Auckland City.

2. Trade Aid

We love their philosophy of low key self help for developing countries, we love the things they sell.

With six great stores across Auckland, Trade Aid makes it easy to buy ethical goods and support fair trade.

3. The Department Store

This is glamour shopping personified, the modern, hip take on the traditional department store experience. Whether it's fashion, beauty, design, or just French pastries, a visit to The Department Store is a treat for all the senses. Take in the pretty florist on the ground floor, the green wall on the top, the pampering in between. Northcroft St, Takapuna.

4. Authentic Tomas Plekanec Jersey Green Bay Auctions

Every Wednesday, come and hunt for bargains. Whether it's mid century furniture, a chainsaw, musical instruments, or a box of 1960s magazines, you never know what you might find here among the antiques, collectables and oddments. Youth Carey Price Jersey And no trip is complete without popping into the Kohu Rd Cafe just over the road. Cnr of Portage Rd and Neville St, New Lynn.

5. Ike's and Geoff's Emporia

These shops have helped make our birthday parties, fancy dress dos and craft projects all the richer, without making us poorer. Like $2 shops on steroids. Feather boas, haberdashery, fabric, toys, hardware, crafts, paint, jewellery, tools, souvenirs, wigs, costumes, decorations and just plain fruity stuff. Dominion Rd, Browns Bay, Devonport and Orewa.

Elisabeth Easther

THE CULTURE http://www.canadiensofficialonline.com/Authentic-Carey-Price-Jersey

6. Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki

Since the renovated, much enlarged gallery opened its doors last September, more than half a million people have poured in, many returning again and again. It's become a magnet for local and international tourists, but even more importantly, it's attracting people from all over the Auckland region, many of whom have never visited before.

We love it not only for the variety of exhibitions and activities the new auditorium hosts some illuminating documentaries and talks but also for the outstanding quality of the refit, making it a beautiful building to explore. It sits well within its Albert Park environs, the new cafe is full of treats and the gallery staff are friendly and helpful. It's a treasure. Find it on Kitchener St.

7. Pah Homestead

The restored historic Pah Homestead in Monte Cecilia Park has been home to the James Wallace Arts Trust and its huge collection since 2010, and it's another winner in terms of welcoming many gallery newbies from the wider Auckland region. A lovely building in a lovely setting (you can hear the birds singing as you stroll through the rooms), with gorgeous New Zealand art that reflects the range and depth of philanthropist collector James Wallace, who has given so much to the city through the decades. Head to 72 Hillsborough Rd, Hillsborough.

8. Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra

Usually to be seen in full thrilling flight at the Town Hall but our orchestra also excels at bringing music to young people via its Sistema Aotearoa programme, which nurtures less advantaged kids' creativity through learning to play instruments. It's truly magic to watch the Sistema kids in action at the Otara Music Arts Centre. The APO also runs a robust concert series developed for decile 5 or lower secondary school children, while its concert programme is an all ages showcase for great musicianship and star performers and conductors from around the world. Next Thursday: Shakespeare In Music.

9. http://www.canadiensofficialonline.com/Authentic-Tomas-Plekanec-Jersey Opera Factory

Opera Factory has been beavering away for 16 years teaching singers of all ages and levels the many crafts required for opera performance. The trust has education at its heart but it also stages chamber opera, concerts and special events for children, with an increasing commitment to New Zealand composers. It's a hive of creativity. Check out 7 Eden St, Newmarket.

10. The Basement

The shiny new Q Theatre just across the way is fabulous but we're backing the grungier Basement for its steady devotion to affordable theatre that's often confrontational and bonkers yet rarely boring and never middle of the road. The ground floor theatre is all the better for a long needed air con unit, which the upstairs studio lacks. One day soon, we hope. It's at Lower Greys Ave.

100 Romanians and Bulgarians take

100 Romanians and Bulgarians take a job in Britain every day

About 100 Romanians and Bulgarians a day are getting jobs in Britain, according to official figures.

The number of people from the two EU countries has soared by more than a third over the past year, even though they are not yet allowed to work freely in this Carey Price Jersey country.

The number here has reached a record high of 141,000, according to the Office for National Statistics over shadowing the total number of Australians and New Zealanders for the first time since records began.

There are fears of an influx of Romanians and Bulgarians next year when current restrictions on their rights to work in Britain are lifted

There are already fears of an influx of Romanians and Bulgarians next year when current restrictions on their rights to work in Britain are lifted.

At present, they can only work here if they are self employed, or are one of a limited number of seasonal workers allowed to come for up to six months a year but must then go home.

Mark Harper says immigration system works in the national interest and is supporting growth

From January, they will have free access to the labour market in Britain, like other European Union citizens.

The influx is hardly surprising, given that Bulgaria's minimum wage is 73p an hour and in Romania it is 79p, while in Britain it will rise to 6.31 Tomas Plekanec M Jersey for over 21s later this year.

ONS figures for the last year showed that overall there were 307,000 more people in employment. However, of this number, two thirds or 204,000 were born abroad.

If the figures are judged according to a worker's nationality, which can be changed, rather than their country of birth, which cannot be altered, two thirds of the increase was among Britons.

Immigration minister Mark Harper said: 'These figures show that we are building an immigration system that works in Authentic Carey Price Jersey the national interest and is supporting growth.

'The rise in Tomas Plekanec Jersey numbers in employment has benefited British citizens first, but we are still attracting skilled migrants to come to the UK where they are needed by British businesses.'

The Government has repeatedly refused to put a figure on the likely influx of Romanians and Bulgarians next year.

Ministers have said an estimate is impossible, fearing a repeat of the 2004 debacle when the influx from eight Eastern European countries was grossly underestimated by the then Labour government.

Broncos coach John Fox released

Broncos coach John Fox released from hospital after heart surgery

Broncos head coach John Fox is already out of the hospital after having heart surgery on Monday. "I know that he's excited to get out, is one step closer to getting back with us."

Del Rio said Fox was resting at his offseason home in Charlotte, where he'll continue his recovery and begin cardio rehab soon.

Fox had his aortic valve replaced at the Carolinas HealthCare System's Sanger Heart Vascular Institute in Charlotte on Monday, two days after becoming dizzy while playing golf during the Broncos' bye.

Fox had hoped to put off the procedure until the offseason, but his cardiologist, Dr. Geoff Rose, and heart surgeon, Dr. Mark Stiegel, determined he could no longer push back the surgery after he fell ill over the weekend.

Fox said in a statement released by the team that his recovery is progressing well "I'm feeling better and stronger each day" and he'll continue meeting with his doctors, "who will clear me to return to Denver when the time is right."

He said it'll be difficult not to be at the game Sunday when the Broncos (7 cheap nfl jerseys 1) visit the Chargers (4 4).

"Although I'm eager to return to coaching, my No. 1 focus is my health. I believe in our players and have full confidence in Jack Del Rio and our staff," Fox said. "While it's extremely difficult to be away from the team on Sunday in San Diego, I'll be cheering them on from home just like the many Broncos fans who have supported me throughout this process."

Players say Fox's tribulations have galvanized them.

"We're just excited to hear that he's doing well. He'll be back soon and we just have to go out there and play through him, play for him," defensive captain Wesley Woodyard said. "He wants to be here with us. This is his hometown we're going back to, so it'll be a big victory if we pull this one off."

Del Rio informed the team of Fox's release from the hospital Friday morning.

"Once you get out of the hospital, that pretty much means that they're saying you're good and the process went well," cornerback Chris Harris said.

Tight end Jacob Tamme said the first step of getting discharged from the hospital is always a big leap.

"We know he's Wholesale NFL Jerseys still got a lot of recovery left to do but that's definitely a great thing," Tamme said. "I know when you get to go home, that's always a positive."

Fox will still have input on his team while he's recovering over the next several weeks.

Del Rio said he figures to talk with Fox on the phone "I would think on a daily basis from here on out."

Del Rio, who was head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2003 11 before rejoining Fox in Denver last year, is keeping his defensive coordinator duties during Fox's absence.

So, he'll rely heavily on his staff, especially linebackers coach Richard Smith, a former defensive coordinator for the Dolphins and Texans, on game day, when he'll have to keep his eyes on the field the whole time.

That doesn't mean he won't go over to his defensive players between series if he has something to say.

"Well, I don't have a restrainer on me," Del Rio said. "I can walk over to the bench, either bench, at any time."

Daily News Readers alert Going forward, the Daily News will require new users to register to the site using full names in order to comment on stories.
