During almost three weeks of testimony, they listened to 56 witnesses 38 for the prosecution and 18 for the defense. A number of items have been the source of conflicting testimony, and jurors will have to sort out those contradictions in the deliberation room.

Zimmerman pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder. He says he fatally shot Martin in a scuffle at the townhome complex where Zimmerman was a neighborhood watch volunteer and where Martin was visiting his father's fiancee. Martin was black and Zimmerman identifies himself as Hispanic. Some civil rights activists argued that the delay in charging Zimmerman was influenced by Martin's race, and protests were held around the nation in the 44 days before Zimmerman was arrested.

WHOSE SCREAMS ARE ON 911 CALLS?

Convincing jurors about whose voice is screaming for help on 911 calls that captured audio of the fight was the primary goal of prosecutors and defense attorneys. Martin's mother, father and brother testified it's the Miami teen screaming for help on recordings of the 911 calls made by Zimmerman's neighbors. Zimmerman's mother, uncle, father and five friends told jurors it was the neighborhood watch volunteer's voice. One of Zimmerman's neighbors, Jayne Surdyka, says the screams were those of a boy.

WHO WAS ON TOP?

Zimmerman was wearing a red jacket, and Martin had on a dark hoodie. Zimmerman's former neighbor Jonathan Good, perhaps the witness with the best view of what happened, says he saw a person in dark clothing straddling someone in red or white clothing and making downward movements with his fists in a mixed-martial arts maneuver known as "ground and pound." Neighbors Selma Mora and Surdyka say the person on top got up after the shooting. Zimmerman's attorneys say Zimmerman had been on the bottom but got on top of Martin after he fired his gun.

HOW DID POSITION OF MARTIN'S ARMS CHANGE?

Zimmerman told investigators that Martin was on top of him, pounding his head into the pavement. After he fired his gun, he says, he got on top of Martin and spread his arms. However, a photo taken moments later by Zimmerman's neighbor shows Martin's arms under his body. Defense expert Vincent DiMaio testified Martin could have moved his arms in the 10 to 15 seconds he would have been conscious after being shot in the heart.

DID ZIMMERMAN ACT IN SELF-DEFENSE?

Zimmerman has argued all along he acted in self-defense, although he passed up chance for a self-defense "stand your ground" hearing in which a judge could have thrown out the case without it going to a jury if the judge was convinced there was enough evidence to support it. Zimmerman's community college instructor, Alexis Francisco Carter, told jurors that a person can claim self-defense if they have a reasonable fear of death or great bodily harm. In their jury instructions, jurors were told self-defense is justified in using deadly force if Zimmerman reasonably believed that such force was necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself.

DID ZIMMERMAN ACT WITH ILL WILL, HATRED, SPITE OR EVIL INTENT?

To get a second-degree murder conviction, prosecutors needed to show that Zimmerman acted with ill will, hatred, spite or evil intent. Prosecutors argued that profanities Zimmerman uttered under his breath while he watched Martin walk through his neighborhood were evidence of ill will and hatred. But when asked by prosecutors and defense attorneys, no witness said Zimmerman acted with these traits. The judge presiding over the case also allowed jurors to consider the lesser charge of manslaughter. To get a manslaughter conviction, prosecutors were required to show that Zimmerman killed without lawful justification.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - When the western television series "The Lone Ranger" first rode into U.S. homes in 1949, the masked man was the dashing, charming hero and the Native American Tonto his loyal sidekick.

When the movie opens in U.S. theaters on Wednesday, it will be Tonto who takes center stage. Played by Johnny Depp with the same offbeat charm as his Captain Jack Sparrow in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, Tonto is the brains of the operation.

In an opening sequence - a breakneck fight scene on a runaway train - Tonto directs an escape from outlaws while a mask-less Lone Ranger, played by Armie Hammer, is the naive one, unsure at the outset that he was even in danger.

"It's a story we've all heard, but we've never heard it from the guy who was there," the film's director Gore Verbinski, 49, told Reuters.

For the new incarnation, Verbinski wanted to update the story by making Tonto more relevant than just a sidekick. Once the idea was hatched to make him the narrator, "it opened a lot of doors" in terms of storytelling, he said.

Through Tonto's eyes, audiences get an origin tale of how former lawman John Reid, the Lone Ranger, came to fight injustice in the Old West.

"This is not history told from your radio station, your movie studio or your network," Verbinski said. "It's told from Tonto and his memory - and his memory may be questionable."

To make Tonto's point of view authentic, a Native American consultant was used on the set, Verbinski said, adding that they also spoke with various tribes to get certain details correct.

No one embraced the Tonto-centric viewpoint more than Depp, who was told from an early age that he was part Native American.

Since production on the Disney film has wrapped, the actor has gone on to strengthen his ties to the community. Last year, Depp was named honorary member of the Comanche Nation in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and he also served as grand marshal at the Comanche Nation Fair in Oklahoma.

CORE ELEMENTS UNTOUCHED

At Depp's request, proceeds from the film's $1,000-per-ticket gala premiere last week at Southern California's Disneyland resort last week supported the American Indian College Fund.

Fans of the "The Lone Ranger" series, which first appeared on radio in 1933, can be assured that its core elements remain. Audiences will see a man in a white hat and mask who believes in justice, a horse named Silver and the trademark silver bullets.

Its famous theme, Rossini's "William Tell" overture, makes its way in to the film and Tonto continues to affectionately refer to the Lone Ranger as "kemo sabe."

The remake boasts the same team, including Depp, Verbinski, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, who brought Disney the mega-blockbuster "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise.

The four "Pirates" films have earned some $3.7 billion in total at the global box office, according to Boxofficemojo.com.

Although there are hopes "The Lone Ranger" team can repeat past box office success, there was nothing cheap about its costs, which a person familiar with the production said was budgeted at $225 million. Other reports have pegged it closer to $250 million.

An entire Old West town was built in which to shoot the film, along with a 200-foot long train tunnel, two 250-ton trains and miles of track.

Building such ambitious sets was necessary to achieve the right "feel" for the film's biggest action scenes, Verbinski said, adding that he did not want to use cheaper computer-generated imagery or miniatures for such sequences.

"The movie is an epic tale and I didn't want it to feel overly lush and too pretty," he said. "We all know what trains and horses look like, so I wanted to shoot trains and horses and do it the old-fashioned way."

After the comparatively comfortable conditions in Seattle, the teams arrived into hot, and humid conditions in Denver as the threat of thunderstorms lingers for Sundays game. Altitude could also play a factor after two straight games at sea level.

Canada and Panama have met only seven times in the past. Canada hold a series lead with a 3-1-3 record.

Most recently, they split their home-and-away games in last years semi-final World Cup qualifying round. Dwayne De Rosario scored in Toronto as Canada escaped with a 1-0 win in early September. Then Panama beat Canada 2-0 in Panama City just a few days later. That game famously featured a power-failure delay and an injury to DeRo that forced him to miss the decisive final two World Cup qualifiers.

The two nations also met In 2011 in the group stage of the Gold Cup, turning in a 1-1 draw in Kansas City. Their first meeting took place in a World Cup qualifier in Panama City in 2000.

CANADA

With everything thats happened to Canada over the course of this tournament, its not too far off to say that if youre healthy, youll play. Having lost players to sickness, injury, and club obligations, luck hasnt been on Canadas side. Will Johnson and Russell Teibert are doubtful with illnesses and Marcus Habers ankle and heel injury that he suffered on Thursday could keep him out, as well.

But Canada were better inthan they were in the . They rattled the woodwork twice, including a thunderous shot from Marcel de Jong, and if not for a defensive lapse on a corner kick and a suspect penalty call, they could've earned a point. But those defensive lapses continue to happen, and against Panama's attack, that could spell doom.

PANAMA

Already through and more concerned about with the World Cup qualifying "Hexagonal," the Panamanians have the luxury to mix and match their squad on Sunday. They have more than a few attacking options, including Blas Perez, Jairo Jimenez, and Gabriel Torres, who has scored all three of their goals so far. But the attack stalled often last time out, against Martinique, and it wasn't until they were up a man for the last 15 minutes that they asserted themselves and earned the penalty that won the match.

Canada Julian de Guzman, midfielderIn the absence of Johnson, this will be a big test of de Guzmans leadership. Theres been no shortage of desire in his play thus far, but hell have to put in his best box-to-box performance, helping out the defense and chipping in on the attack.

A spokeswoman for the airline said the aircraft, which had turned back as a precautionary measure during a flight from Manchester in northwest England to Sanford in Florida, had suffered a "minor technical issue".

The plane will depart Manchester for Cancun at 0950am (8:50 a.m. GMT / 4:50 a.m. EDT) and Thomson's two other Dreamliners have also been fully tested and will fly from London's Gatwick airport to Sanford and to Palma on Sunday morning, the airline said.

The Crusaders had needed a four-try win to take a bonus point and put pressure on the Chiefs, but managed only three as the Hurricanes fought to the finish.

Defending champions Chiefs can head into their final regular-season match against the Blues on Saturday assured they have a week off before a home semi-final regardless of the outcome.

The Crusaders cemented a home playoff in the first week of the postseason but will have plenty to ponder after a disjointed display in front of home fans.

The Hurricanes were already out of the playoffs but took it to the hosts and pulled within a point in the last 15 minutes when winger Julian Savea scored a late try.

The visitors searched desperately for a late score, but jet-heeled winger Marshall dribbled a kick to the left corner in the final minutes and bolted half the length of the field to touch it over the line.

Zac Guildford and Andy Ellis scored the two early tries for the Crusaders, who enjoyed good service from in-form flyhalf Dan Carter but may hope captain Richie McCaw can slot back into the team for the playoffs after a long sabbatical.

Carter kicked two penalties and two conversions to add 10 points.

A mixed batch of U.S. earnings kept the buying in check as did a weaker than anticipated consumer sentiment survey from the University of Michigan.

This week has been largely positive in stock markets, especially after Fed chairman Ben Bernanke said on Wednesday that the U.S. needs "highly accommodative monetary policy" or low interest rates "for the foreseeable future."

The S&P 500 index closed Thursday at an all-time high as investor fears that the central bank will pull back on its economic stimulus too quickly were eased. The Fed is buying $85 billion a month in bonds to keep interest rates low and to encourage spending and hiring.

"Equities are still subject to the positive bias established by Bernanke's comments," said David White, a trader at Spreadex.

In Europe, the FTSE 100 index of leading 100 shares was broadly unchanged Friday, up 0.02 percent, at 6,544 while Germany's DAX rose 0.6 percent to 8,212. The CAC-40 in France, underperformed, trading 0.3 percent lower at 3,856.

In the U.S., the Dow Jones industrial average was off 0.2 percent at 15,422 while the broader S&P 500 index dropped 0.1 percent to 1,673.

U.S. traders had a raft of earnings news to digest. While profits at big banks Wells Fargo and JP Morgan came in better than expected, UPS cut its profit outlook and said it's seeing a slowdown in U.S. industry.

Meanwhile, the University of Michigan's main consumer confidence index fell slightly, to 83.9 points in July from 84.1 in June. The median forecast in the markets was for a modest rise to 84.7.

The dollar continued to recoup some of the losses it posted in the wake of Bernanke's pledge, with the euro trading 0.08 percent lower at $1.3084 and the dollar 0.32 percent higher at 99.29 yen. The dollar suffered widespread selling after Bernanke's comments as investors priced in a growing likelihood that the Fed's monetary policy will remain loose for the time being. Looser monetary policy tends to weaken a country's currency.

While the main focus in markets during the latter part of the week has been on the Fed, investors have a number of other issues to contend with, notably the state of the Chinese economy, the world's second-largest.

Surprisingly weak trade figures earlier this week raised the prospect that China's slowdown will be sharper than anticipated as China's central bank tightens credit to reduce financial distortions. China announces April-June growth figures on Monday morning and the mood ahead of the release was nervous the main index in Shanghai fell 1.6 percent to 2,134.50.

"China could be a cloud on the horizon after the finance minister suggested that growth could come in at 7 percent for this year, which is below the government's official forecast as well as a whole host of others," said Michael Hewson, senior market analyst at CMC Markets.

Europe's debt crisis also remains in the spotlight amid ongoing concerns over the Portuguese government and whether the country may need another bailout.

However, the overall European concerns have been contained somewhat this week by the news that Greece has managed to get its next batch of bailout cash without too much trouble.

Investors got some further relief Friday with a broadly positive assessment of Ireland's public finances by the Standard & Poor's ratings agency. S&P said there is "more than one-in-three probability that Ireland could over-achieve its fiscal targets and reduce its government debt faster than we currently expect." As a result, it revised its outlook on Ireland's BBB+ rating to positive.

Earlier in Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 index closed up 0.2 percent at 14,506.25 while Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped 0.8 percent to 21,277.28. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 was up 0.2 percent at 4,973.0.

The bubble-headed Asimo machine had problems telling the difference between people raising their hands to ask questions and those aiming their smartphones to take photos at the Miraikan science museum.

It froze mid-action and repeated a programmed remark, "Who wants to ask Asimo a question?"

The robot guide, shown to reporters on Wednesday, is connected by wireless to six sensors in the ceiling to discern where a crowd is gathering.

It has no voice recognition and responds to written questions selected from a touch-panel device, meaning that interacting with Asimo was even less natural, or entertaining, than the typical dead-end conversation with a smartphone.

Honda's robotics technology, although among the most advanced for mobility, has come under fire as lacking practical applications and being little more than an expensive toy.

Asimo was too sensitive to go into radiated areas after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear crisis, and Honda had to do new work to develop robotic arms that could be used in reactors.

Satoshi Shigemi, who oversees Honda's robotics technology, acknowledged that more work was needed. He said the goal is to have Asimo recognize who is talking to it, such as an adult versus a child, and respond accordingly.

It has a long way to go.

"Right now, it can recognize a child waving to it, but it's not able to comprehend the meaning of the waving," he told reporters.

A possible future use for Asimo would be to help people buy tickets from vending machines at train stations, Shigemi said, speeding up the process for any humans unfamiliar with the process.

"The tasks that any child can perform, such as language interpretation, are among the most challenging for a computerized agent, whether robotic or not," said Ingrid Zukerman, professor of information technology at Australia's Monash University.

The effort is complex, including making out speech and then connecting it with knowledge to make out meanings, and so the state-of-the-art language interpretation is still limited to specific requests such as bus schedules and airline bookings, Zukerman said.

In Wednesday's demonstration, the robot walked around and gesticulated while it answered a question about its own features while projecting diagrams on a big screen.

Honda said it was programmed to reply to about 100 questions. Four were chosen randomly and popped up on the touch panels for the audience to choose.

Honda's humanoid prototype was first shown in 1996, and it has grown smaller and nimbler over the years.

In previous demonstrations, Asimo has shown it can run, hop on one foot and kick a soccer ball. It has fingers with joints and can open a thermos lid and pour a drink. It has image sensors and can make its way through objects in a room.

University of Minnesota undergrad Daniel Crawford has crafted an innovative way of interpreting graphs and data into a one-man concertohis composition allows its listeners to feel the planet's toasty metamorphosis. 

According to , the University of Minnesota's Institute on the Environment magazine, Crawford used surface-temperature data from NASA's Goddard Institute of Space Studies to create a data sonification that transforms climate records into musical notes.

In Crawford's resulting "Song of Our Warming Planet," each ascending halftone represents about 0.03C of planetary warming. Each note represents a year from 1880 to 2012, and the notes are portrayed over a range of three octaves. The coldest year, 1909, is embodied by the lowest possible note on the cello, open C. 

The culmination of the cellist's conversions is a two-minute song that begins in the cello's lowest range, progresses through to the 1940s in the mid-register and peaks in the highest recorded temperatures of the 1990s to .

If scientists'  are correctthat global temperatures will rise by 1.8C by the end of the centurythe resultant musical notes, according to Crawford's calculations, will be beyond the range of human hearing.

In laymen's terms? Only dogs can hear the notes of our screeching fate.
