Police from several cities were called in to quell the disturbance Sunday night in Huntington Beach. Several officers and people received minor injuries.

The weeklong surfing competition drew thousands of people to the Orange County city that bills itself as "Surf City USA."

A large fight broke out between some people in a crowd after the contest ended. When officers tried to break it up, the mob surged downtown, police Lt. John Domingo told KNX-AM on Monday.

The crowd pulled down a stop sign, and a man used it to smash the front window of a bicycle shop, which was then looted. Other people brawled, threw bottles, toppled portable toilets, rocked a city truck and threw a chair into a fountain.

"You see a mob of people running up the street," said Bert Etheredge, a salesman at the Easyrider bicycle and skateboard shop. "That's when we decided to shut down the shop and turn off all the lights, lock everything and kind of go into hiding, if you will."

The crowd then pulled down the stop sign, he said.

"It was coming through the window two seconds later, and that's when people started jumping in and pulling the bikes out," Etheredge told KABC-TV.

Police used nonlethal ammunition to help disperse the crowd.

Witness Doug Cavender told KABC-TV the scene was "really, really nuts, and it got really crazy really fast."

"I really honestly didn't think stuff like this happened in the OC," he said.

One person was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, and seven were arrested for other crimes including disturbing the peace, unlawful assembly and inciting a riot, Domingo said.

"We're extremely disappointed and saddened by the disturbance," said a statement on the U.S. Open of Surfing website. "We work tirelessly with city staff, police, fire and other agencies to ensure a safe environment for all."

Investigators planned to review video and could make more arrests.

Kuchar, who led after the second round concluded on Saturday morning, fired a one-under 70 in round three.

He and Woodland finished 54 holes at 12-under par 201.

Another marathon day on Saturday got the tournament back on schedule for the first time since weather delays totalling nearly six hours on Thursday.

Kevin Chappell moved into contention by firing a course-record, nine-under 62 in the third round. That vaulted him into third place at minus-11.

Playing with a sore back, Tiger Woods shot a two-under 69 and was four shots back of Kuchar and Woodland.

England's David Lynn also posted a 69 Sunday afternoon and joined Woods in a tie for fourth at eight-under 205.

Defending champion Nick Watney shared 13th place after a third-round 69 for 207.

Despite the back pain, Woods climbed up the leaderboard with four birdies in his final 11 holes.

"It starts off great every day, and then it progressively deteriorates as the day goes on," said Woods, who had trouble bending over at times on the course. "Hopefully tomorrow it will be one of those days again and fight through it and see if I can win a tournament."

Woods was pleased with the way he toughed it out Saturday. He hit all but two fairways and 13 of 18 greens.

He also adjusted his swing slightly to put less pressure on his sore back.

"I mean, once you start off with it and then you keep playing on it, practicing, warming up, I'm loading it pretty good," said Woods, adding he feels the sore back is a result of sleeping on a hotel mattress that is too soft for him.

"It's not like I go out there and puff it around. I kind of go at it a little bit."

Yet when it comes to the cloak and dagger effort of catching philandering lovers, all high-tech weapons appear to be fair game at least to the tens of thousands of Brazilians who downloaded "Boyfriend Tracker" to their smartphones before the stealthy software was removed from the Google Play app store last week, apparently in response to complaints about privacy abuses and its potential to be used for extortion or even stalking.

"Brazilians are a jealous people, what can I say? Of course it's going to be popular," said Marcia Almeida, a 47-year-old woman in Rio whose marriage ended seven years ago in large part because of what she said was her husband's infidelity.

"It's a different type of spying," she said of comparisons to the NSA surveillance program. "You're checking up on somebody you know intimately, not some stranger."

The app, called "Rastreador de Namorados" (Portuguese for Boyfriend Tracker), promises to act like a "private detective in your partner's pocket."

Functions include sending the person doing the tracking updates on their partner's location and forwarding duplicates of text message traffic from the targeted phone. There is even a command that allows a user to force the target phone to silently call their own, like a pocket dial, so they can listen in on what the person is saying.

Similar apps are marketed for smartphone users in other countries, including Europe and the U.S., but Boyfriend Tracker is the first that has made any impact in Brazil, a country still irate as it learns more about Washington's snooping. Brazil has sent a government delegation to meet with U.S. leaders about the spy program that was revealed by Edward Snowden, the former NSA contractor who has been on the run since May and was recently granted asylum in Russia.

Google spokeswoman Gina Johnson said by email that as a policy the company doesn't comment on why apps are removed.

Critics say even as advertised, apps like Boyfriend Tracker can violate privacy rights, and they warn that in the wrong hands they could be used for more sinister purposes, like stalking. Some in Brazil argue it breaks an anti-online harassment and hacking law in place since April. The law is named after Brazilian actress Carolina Dieckmann, who had nude photos of herself leaked by hackers in 2012 after she refused to pay about $5,000.

However, similar apps popular on Google Play market themselves to parents as a means of monitoring how teenage children use the phone and where they are at any given moment.

Matheus Grijo, a 24-year-old Sao Paulo-based developer behind Boyfriend Tracker, says it has attracted around 50,000 users since its launch about two months ago, most since the site began attracting media attention two weeks ago.

Grijo insists his lawyer vetted the app and determined it does not violate any Brazilian laws. Despite being removed by Google, it is still available via direct download from his company's website.

A disclaimer on that website stipulates the app is for "social and recreational use" and absolves the developer of responsibility for any misuse. The first line of the download instructions says a woman installing the tracker on her boyfriend's phone should do so "with his consent."

"We are waiting for Google's position on the removal of 'Boyfriend Tracker' from Google Play, which we consider an error," read a posting on a Facebook page Grijo set up for the app.

To install Boyfriend Tracker, suspicious partners have to get their hands on their loved one's smartphones and upload the app. A free version leaves the app's icon visible on the target's phone, while a version that costs $2 a month masks the icon.

Grijo said the app began as a joke between him and his girlfriend but the idea quickly caught on among their friends.

"In Brazil, we have this culture of switching partners really quickly, so this is a way of dealing with that," said Grijo. "People really appreciate having a tool to help them find out whether they're being cheated on."

He acknowledged that "of course some people are against it, but on balance the response from users has been positive." He said he's received messages of gratitude from around 50 people who used the app to ferret out their partners' infidelity.

While cheating in Brazil cuts both ways, the app is clearly marketed to women suspicious of their male partners, right down to the name. Postings on the app's Facebook page exhort: "Girls, share this."

Still, Grijo insisted he personally has never given his girlfriends any reason to worry.

"I've had three steady girlfriends until now but I've never had these kinds of issues," he said.

"Blurred Lines," released in March by R&B singer Robin Thicke, rapper T.I. and singer-producer Pharrell Williams, is the second-best selling song track this year with more than 4.6 million copies sold in the United States.

The lawsuit, which was filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles late on Thursday, alleges that the owners of Gaye's 1977 hit "Got to Give It Up" and Funkadelic's 1974 song "Sexy Ways" have threatened legal action over copyright infringement if the composers of "Blurred Lines" do not pay a monetary settlement.

"Being reminiscent of a 'sound' is not copyright infringement. The intent in producing 'Blurred Lines' was to evoke an era," the lawsuit states.

Thicke's raunchy, percussive R&B song sung in a falsetto has reached No. 1 on the song charts around the world including the United States, Britain and Germany. Its official video on YouTube has also been viewed more than 140 million times.

The lawsuit asks the court to declare that "Blurred Lines" does not infringe on either "Sexy Ways" or "Got to Give It Up" and that the owners of the songs do not have standing to later sue.

"Sexy Ways," written by George Clinton and Grace Cook, is owned by Bridgeport Music Inc. "Got to Give It Up" is owned by Gaye's children, Frankie Christian Gaye, Marvin Gaye III and Nona Marvisa Gaye.

Clinton, leader of the Parliament-Funkadelic funk collective, supported the "Blurred Lines" composers on Twitter and criticized Bridgeport Music head Armen Boladian.

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Bruno Mars are the latest to join the list of perfomers at MTV's VMAs. THe hip-hop duo will peform their marriage equality song "Same Love," while Mars will debut his new single.

Macklemore's performance marks the first time an artist has performed at all three of MTV's major televised events - the mtvU Woodies, MTV Movie Awards and the VMAs - in one calendar year.

They join previously announced performers Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, Kanye West, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke.

MTV announced Thursday that Timberlake would receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award. He and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are tied for the most VMA nominations with six each.

Encouraging news about global manufacturing sent stock indexes higher Thursday.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 66 points, or 0.4 percent, to 14,963. The Dow was coming off six straight losses.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 14 points, or 0.9 percent, to 1,656. The Nasdaq composite rose 38 points, or 1.1 percent, to 3,638.

The stock of Nasdaq OMX, parent company of the Nasdaq exchange, fell 3 percent to $30.46 after the trading outage.

Five stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was very low, 2.4 billion shares, below the recent average of 3.3 billion.

Gendron and Schappert emerged from a chaotic race with a silver medal in the 18-kilometre event after teammate Hanna Boersma had to bow out with ongoing concussion issues. Gendron and Schappert discussed other options in the weeks leading up to the Games, but decided to ride the three-stage event without a third partner.

"I was happy it was only going to be two because I got to race two laps," said Gendron on Tuesday, a day after the event. The 21-year-old took the first and third leg, while the 22-year-old Schappert raced the middle stage.

"It was awesome to get second," said Gendron before Schappert added: "Yeah, super stoked."

Gendron got off to a slow start in the first leg, but caught up to riders from Quebec and Ontario on the first ascension. Quebec City's Andreane Lanthier-Nadeau got a flat tire near the top of the hill, allowing Gendron to pull into second.

"Karlee came in and she was like 'go go go, Quebec has a mechanical,'" said Schappert. "Ontario was first, then me and then Alberta was a little bit behind us and then Alberta caught up on the climb. On all the descents I gapped everybody.

"On the second half of the lap I could hear a whole ton of Quebec people yelling for Quebec. ... so I wasn't sure how far back she was so I was gunning it up the climb as best I could."

While Schappert maintained Manitoba's lead, Gendron was on a stationary bike first to cool down from her opening lap, then warm up again for her second. As she prepared to go back on the course she got updates from family and coaches on her teammate's progress.

"Anna did an amazing job with her lap and held Quebec off her wheel," said Gendron. "Then it was a battle between Frederic Trudel who won the cross-country and me. It was going back and forth on the climbs and descents and I finally took her in a sprint finish."

Ontario won the event in one hour seven minutes 49.23 seconds, Gendron and Schappert finished in 1:11:16.49 and Quebec completed the course in 1:11:17.62.

Both Manitobans are experienced cyclists. They have both competed in several Western Canadian Games and Canada Games and Gendron will compete in road cycling in the second week of the 2013 Games. She was Manitoba's flag bearer at the Games' opening ceremonies.

Gendron was able to fall back on that wealth of experience for the relay instead of doing any special preparation for her two trips around the course.

"I don't think I did any specific training geared towards doing two laps, but we did the cross-country course on Saturday," said Gendron, who won bronze in that event. "That was the same course as the relay so just learning the course sort of prepared you. Actually, the second lap of the relay I was a lot faster.

"You know the course well, you know the conditions for the day, the mud, everything."

Both riders enjoyed the relay format of the event, especially the shorter, aggressive laps instead of the more measured pace of a cross-country race.

"I think the relay is just a completely different race. It's shorter for each party involved and it just gives you a different dynamic which you can excel at as opposed to cross country," said Schappert. "Because we've only ever raced one kind of race the cross country race and now they've shifted it to three completely different types of racing which gives people way more opportunity to shine."

Schappert and Gendron also liked working with each other and cheering each other on instead of shouldering all the pressure of an individual event.

"It was really wicked," said Schappert. "It's nice having someone to work with because the sport can be really singly focused and when you work in a team it's way more rewarding."

Added Gendron: "It's totally different when you get into a team atmosphere and you have someone else that you're competing with instead of against."

Manitoba was not the only team to overcome adversity. Lanthier-Nadeau carried her bike for most of her six-kilometre lap after a flat tire early on in the race.

"I started running because there was no other option, because the tech zone was behind me so I couldn't go back or anything," said the 20-year-old. "I knew that my teammates were really strong and I knew that we still had a shot at the medal. So on the descents I was going on my bike and when it was too uphill or too many rocks, I had to run."

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A salad mix linked to a severe stomach virus that sickened more than 200 people in Iowa and Nebraska has not been served at Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurants there for about a month, a spokesman for the restaurants said on Saturday.

The Food and Drug Administration identified the salad, supplied by a Mexican farm, as responsible for the cyclospora outbreak in those two states.

But the FDA said it is not yet clear if it was the culprit in 14 other states as well, and the investigation will continue.

Rich Jeffers, a spokesman for Orlando, Florida-based Darden Restaurants, which operates Olive Garden and Red Lobster, said it has been more than a month since the last case was reported in Iowa and Nebraska. The shelf life of the salad is about two-weeks.

"We are fully confident along with health officials that in those states the product is out of the supply chain," Jeffers said.

The cyclospora infections account for more than 400 cases of illness in 16 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. At least 22 people have been hospitalized.

The highest number of cases - 146 - were reported in Iowa, followed by Texas with 113, Nebraska with 81 and Florida with 25, according to the CDC. Other states have reported cases in the single digits.

Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurants in Texas, the state with the second largest number of reported illnesses, are not supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico, Jeffers said.

The majority of cases were reported between mid-June and early July, the CDC said.

"None of Taylor Farms' other 11 facilities have been connected to these cases," a statement on its Web site said.

The FDA also said its investigation has not found any problems with bagged salad mix found in grocery stores.

The states reporting cases of stomach illness are: Iowa, Nebraska, Texas, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, and Ohio.

Cyclosporiasis is most commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Symptoms for the illness, caused by ingesting contaminated food or water containing a parasite too small to be detected without a microscope, include nausea, watery diarrhea and body aches.

Most people with healthy immune systems recover from the infection without treatment, but the elderly and those with weakened immune systems are believed to be at higher risk for prolonged illness.

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesia's energy regulator has suspended all oil, condensate and natural gas sell tenders as it reviews internal procedures after its chairman was caught taking an alleged bribe from an oil trader last week, an agency official said on Monday.

The suspension is the first evidence that the graft scandal engulfing SKKMigas is starting to impact day to day operations for Indonesia's huge oil and gas industry.

SKKMigas suspended a tender to sell around 400,000 barrels of condensate from Total'sSenipah complex that was due to close on Monday, said an agency official who wished not to be named.

"The tender process is on hold. We aren't continuing the tender process," he told Reuters, adding that he was not sure how long the halt would last.

On Wednesday, SKKMigas chairman Rudi Rubiandini was arrested for taking an alleged bribe from an executive with Singapore energy trader Kernel Oil Pte Ltd, heightening the uncertainty over energy policy in Southeast Asia's largest economy, where oil and gas production contributes a fifth of government revenue.

Kernel Oil was a participant in Monday's suspended tender, worth at least $41.5 million based on July prices. The small company, which has denied involvement in the graft case, is among 40 companies authorized to buy oil and gas from SKKMigas.

"We need to start over because Kernel was already listed as a participant (in the tender)," the official said.

"The impact (from the suspension), of course, is that the income to our nation will be a little bit delayed. But in terms of impact over one year, I don't think the impact will be that (significant)."

SKKMigas, which sells excess oil and gas that cannot be used by state energy company PT Pertamina Persero, has conducted at least seven tenders this year, selling Minas and Duri crudes and Senipah and Geragai condensate.

After Rubiandini's arrest, the scandal widened on Friday to include three other top SKKMigas officials. The heads of the regulators' crude and natural gas commercial divisions, as well as the chief of operations support, were all suspended and barred from travel.

Officials from the Corruption Eradication Agency (KPK) over the weekend confiscated documents from the office of SKKMigas' interim chairman Johanes Widjornarko, who replaced Rubiandini.

A KPK spokesman said the action was part of the investigation but that Widjornarko was not a suspect.

The KPK spokesman said the agency had also seized $200,000 from the office of a top energy ministry official, which it believed was linked to the Rubiandini case.

The energy regulator, which has named temporary replacements for the impugned officials, had earlier said the scandal would not affect oil operations.

SKKMigas has existing production sharing contracts with oil majors including BP Plc , Chevronand Exxon Mobil .
