The prospects of success grew as the minutes passed and no frozen flecks of ammonia appeared. Mission Control said it appeared as though the leak may have been plugged, although additional monitoring over the next few weeks, if not months, will be needed before declaring a victory.

"No evidence of any ammonia leakage whatsoever. We have an airtight system at the moment," Mission Control reported.

Christopher Cassidy and Thomas Marshburn installed the new pump after removing the old one suspected of spewing flakes of frozen ammonia coolant two days earlier. They uncovered "no smoking guns" responsible for the leak and consequently kept a sharp lookout for any icy flecks that might appear from the massive frame that holds the solar panels on the left side.

"Let us know if you see anything," Mission Control urged as the fresh pump was cranked up. Thirty minutes later, all was still well. "No snow," the astronauts radioed.

"We have our eyes on it and haven't seen a thing," Marshburn said.

NASA said the leak, while significant, never jeopardized crew safety. But managers wanted to deal with the trouble now, while it's fresh and before Marshburn returns to Earth in just a few days.

The space agency never before staged such a fast, impromptu spacewalk for a station crew. Even during the shuttle days, unplanned spacewalks were uncommon.

The ammonia pump was the chief suspect going into Saturday's spacewalk. So it was disheartening for NASA, at first, as Cassidy and Marshburn reported nothing amiss on or around the old pump.

"All the pipes look shiny clean, no crud," Cassidy said as he used a long, dentist-like mirror to peer into tight, deep openings.

"I can't give you any good data other than nominal, unfortunately. No smoking guns."

Engineers determined there was nothing to lose by installing a new pump, despite the lack of visible damage to the old one. The entire team weary and stressed by the frantic pace of the past two days gained more and more confidence as the 5 1/2-hour spacewalk drew to a close with no flecks of ammonia popping up.

"Gloved fingers crossed," space station commander Chris Hadfield said in a tweet from inside. "No leaks!" he wrote a half-hour later.

Flight controllers in Houston worked furiously to get ready for Saturday's operation, completing all the required preparation in under 48 hours. The astronauts trained for just such an emergency scenario before they rocketed into orbit; the repair job is among NASA's so-called Big 12.

This area on the space station is prone to leaks.

The ammonia coursing through the plumbing is used to cool the space station's electronic equipment. There are eight of these power channels, and all seven others were operating normally. As a result, life for the six space station residents was pretty much unaffected, aside from the drama unfolding Saturday 255 miles above the planet. The loss of two power channels, however, could threaten science experiments and backup equipment.

"We may not have found exactly the smoking gun," Cassidy said, "but to pull off what this team did yesterday and today, working practically 48 straight hours, it was a remarkable effort on everybody's behalf."

NASA's space station program manager Mike Suffredini said it's a mystery as to why the leak erupted. Possibilities include a micrometeorite strike or a flawed seal. Ammonia already had been seeping ever so slightly from the location, but the flow increased dramatically Thursday.

Marshburn has been on the space station since December and is set to return to Earth late Monday. Cassidy is a new arrival, on board for just 1 months.

By coincidence, the two performed a spacewalk at this troublesome spot before, during a shuttle visit in 2009.

"This type of event is what the years of training were for," Hadfield said in a tweet Friday. "A happy, busy crew, working hard, loving life in space."

The Senate voted 69 to 27 Monday to pass a bill that empowers states to collect sales taxes from Internet purchases. Under the bill, states could require out-of-state retailers to collect sales taxes when they sell products over the Internet, in catalogs, and through radio and TV ads. The sales taxes would be sent to the states where a shopper lives.

Current law says states can only require retailers to collect sales taxes if the merchant has a physical presence in the state.

That means big retailers with stores all over the country like Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Target collect sales taxes when they sell goods over the Internet. But online retailers like eBay and Amazon don't have to collect sales taxes, except in states where they have offices or distribution centers.

"This bill is about fairness," said Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., the bill's main sponsor in the Senate. "It's about leveling the playing field between the brick and mortar and online companies and it's about collecting a tax that's already due. It's not about raising taxes."

The bill got bipartisan support in the Senate but faces opposition in the House, where some lawmakers regard it as a tax increase. Grover Norquist, the anti-tax advocate, and the conservative Heritage Foundation oppose the bill, and many Republicans have been wary of crossing them.

Supporters say the bill is not a tax increase. In many states, shoppers are required to pay unpaid sales tax when they file their state tax returns. However, states complain that few taxpayers comply.

"Obviously there's a lot of consumers out there that have been accustomed to not having to pay any taxes, believing that they don't have to pay any taxes," said Rep. Steve Womack, R-Ark., the bill's main sponsor in the House. "I totally understand that, and I think a lot of our members understand that. There's a lot of political difficulty getting through the fog of it looking like a tax increase."

On Tuesday morning, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, declined to say whether the House would take up the bill. Later, he told Bloomberg Television in an interview that he would "probably not" support the bill. But he said he would refer it to the House Judiciary Committee and "we'll see what they think."

Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., chairman of the Judiciary Committee, said there are problems with the bill, but he did not reject it outright.

"While it attempts to make tax collection simpler, it still has a long way to go," Goodlatte said in a statement. Without more uniformity in the bill, he said, "businesses would still be forced to wade through potentially hundreds of tax rates and a host of different tax codes and definitions."

Goodlatte said he's "open to considering legislation concerning this topic but these issues, along with others, would certainly have to be addressed."

Internet giant eBay led the fight against the bill in the Senate, along with lawmakers from states with no sales tax and several prominent anti-tax groups. The bill's opponents say it would put an expensive obligation on small businesses because they are not as equipped as national merchandisers to collect and remit sales taxes at the multitude of state rates.

Businesses with less than $1 million in online sales would be exempt. EBay wants to exempt businesses with up to $10 million in sales or fewer than 50 employees.

"The contentious debate in the Senate shows that a lot more work needs to be done to get the Internet sales tax issue right, including ensuring that small businesses using the Internet are protected from new burdens that harm their ability to compete and grow," said Brian Bieron, eBay's senior director of global public policy.

Some states have sales taxes as high as 7 percent, plus city and county taxes that can push the combined rate even higher.

Many governors Republicans and Democrats have been lobbying the federal government for years for the authority to collect sales taxes from online sales.

The issue is getting bigger for states as more people make purchases online. Last year, Internet sales in the U.S. totaled $226 billion, up nearly 16 percent from the previous year, according to government estimates.

States lost a total of $23 billion last year because they couldn't collect taxes on out-of-state sales, according to a study done for the National Conference of State Legislatures, which has lobbied for the bill. About half of that was lost from Internet sales; half from purchases made through catalogs, mail orders and telephone orders, the study said.

Supporters say the bill makes it relatively easy for Internet retailers to comply. States must provide free computer software to help retailers calculate sales taxes, based on where shoppers live. States must also establish a single entity to receive Internet sales tax revenue, so retailers don't have to send it to individual counties or cities.

Opponents worry the bill would give states too much power to reach across state lines to enforce their tax laws. States could audit out-of-state businesses, impose liens on their property and, ultimately, sue them in state court.

Cottonwood Heights police cited Thomas Cobb a week ago for failure to have an exotic pet permit and told him he had until Friday to get rid of all but one of his 29 boa constrictors.

Cobb values the snakes at $12,000 apiece and said he spent $100,000 on a special room in his basement with top-of-the-line cages. Some of the snakes are as long as 7 feet. Police officers noted in their report the setup was clean and well-kept.

City council members agreed on Friday to look into the case further after Cobb argued that a local ordinance is confusing.

Cobb got the attention of the council and the mayor after he took his fight against the snake eviction to the Internet and local radio shows. He maintains he's the victim, in part, of the public's distaste for snakes in general.

"We see movies, we see 'Snakes on a Plane,' we see 'Anaconda,' we see these movies where snakes are portrayed as monsters and can eat school buses, and that is not the case," he told The Deseret News (http://tinyurl.com/cajkcvn).

Cobb praised the council for having an open mind.

"I am pleased to find that they are at least willing to take and investigate further rather than make assumptions and going off on maybe their personal belief on snakes and maybe the reptile hobby keeping in general," he said.

Cottonwood Heights police Sgt. Dan Bartlett said a neighbor spotted one of the snakes and called police to Cobb's home last week. He said officers also found 80 rats, which were being kept as food for the snakes.

Cobb was cited for failing to have the permit required when anyone owns more than one exotic pet. He disputes that interpretation and maintains he needs to show only that he can properly care for the snakes, that they do not pose a danger to the public and that he has knowledge of the animals.

Cobb is scheduled to meet again with the council on May 7. He said he has invited all of the council members to his house to see the snakes firsthand, but as of Friday no one had taken him up on the offer.

Your Phone Slows Down Over Time

When you brought your Android phone home from the store, it felt blazing fast. Now, it takes a long time just to return to the home screen from your email inbox. If the phone makes you wait five seconds to open the browser again, you may test out the Gorilla glass display with a hammer.

Fortunately, you don't need to sit there and stare at the screen waiting for something to happen, nor do you need to replace your handset. By clearing your app cache, trying a new launcher and following a few other steps, you can bring your sluggish smartphone back to life.

More:

Your Phone Makes Embarrassing Noises

Whether you're trying to sleep or in the middle of a job interview, your Android phone always makes noise at the most inappropriate time. Not a fan of incessant chimes or hearing your phone scream "Droid" like some kind of killer robot? It's easy to teach your device some manners.

You can go into each individual app and try to disable its notification sounds, but no matter how many you turn off, there's always one more service ready to come out of nowhere and make noise when you least expect it. The solution is not disable Android notifications piece by piece, but to choose a slient audio file as your default sound.

More:

Can't Get Rid of Crapware

From shopping apps like Amazon to carrier-specific services like Sprint TV and VZ Navigator, most Android phones come from the factory festooned with apps you don't need. A lot of these apps run in the background even if you never use them and, even worse, they can't be uninstalled under normal circumstances. Fortunately, you can disable these preloaded parasites in the settings menu, putting them in a deep freeze.

More:

Short Battery Life

In an ideal world, you'd be able to surf the web, check email and play 3D games on your phone all day long without running out of juice. In the real world, most Android phones can't make it through an entire day of intense use and some need a charge by the afternoon.

However, if you're willing to make a few trade-offs, such as lowering the brightness level, disabling background data and turning off GPS, you can get more endurance without buying an extra battery or portable charger. If you're not afraid to void your warranty, you can save a ton of juice by , ,or other phone.

More:

You Can't Tell How Much Juice You Have Left

If you knew you had just 40 percent of your battery life left at 3 pm, you might change your settings and behavior to make it through the rest of the day. Unfortunately, most Android phones just show you a tiny green or blue icon in the upper left corner of the screen, which looks less and less full throughout the day but doesn't provide a precise number to let you know how much juice you have left.

By installing a third-party app such as Elvison's Battery widget from the Google Play Store, you can make the exact battery level visible at all times.

More:

Your Interface Looks Ugly

When you bought your phone, you thought the icons, menus and desktop looked ok, but now every time you stare at it, you want to vomit. Sure, you can change the wallpaper, but that's just putting lipstick on a pig. Fortunately, you don't need to replace your phone or go through a risky rooting process to make its UI look a lot better.

Third-party Android launchers such as ,andcan replace your old fashioned home screen and app menu with beautiful new themes, complete with transition effects and even custom menus or gesture support. Some launchers can even make your system speedier.

More:

Other Android Phones Have Better Features

The ten commandments say not to covet your neighbor's wife or house, but they don't tell you not to lust after his Android phone's features. If you wish your phone had a floating browser window like QSlide on the LG Optimus G Pro, a video player that appears on top of your apps like Pop-up Play on the Samsung Galaxy S4 or an automation service like the Droid RAZR M's Smart Actions, there are apps that can perform all those functions.

Search the Google Play store for "floating apps" to find programs such as Floating Browser Flux and Super Video that run in draggable, resizable windows. Also, look for automation apps likethat program your phone to do different things based on your calendar, location or other conditions. You can even configure the app so your phone doesn't ring whenever it sees a meeting on your calendar.

More:

The Share Menu Has Too Many Options

One of Android's best features is its universal share menu, which lists every app you can share to, from Facebook to your Gmail account. Unfortunately, a lot of apps that you would never share to such as Bluetooth transfer or Backup Assistant end up higher on the menu than ones you use every day like Twitter.

Third-party app Andmade Share replace's Android's share menu with a custom list you can reorder or remove items from. So if you share to Pinterest more than Google Plus, you can rank that social network first.

More:

The Lock Screen Slows You Down

It may have an attractive weather widget, shortcuts to your favorite apps or even social updates, but for most, the Android lock screen is little more than an attractive speed bump that gets in the way every time you wake your phone. If you want to hit the power button and go immediately back to whatever you were doing when your phone went to sleep, simply change the screen lock setting in the Android security menu.

More:

Your Phone Uses the Wrong Apps to Open Links or Files

Sometimes it seems like your phone has a mind of its own. You tap on a link and it opens a screen in the IMDB app when you wanted to view it in your browser. You want to edit a Word document in QuickOffice but it opens in the viewer-only version of Documents to Go.

Like Windows, Android associates file types with specific apps to open them, but the mobile OS goes even further by associating links to certain domans with apps. For example, you can have the Newegg app launch when you tap on a link that goes to www.newegg.com. If you don't like the app that opens a particular file type, simply navigate to the app settings menu, select the program you want to unassociate and tap Clear defaults. The next time you try to open that file type, you'll be prompted to choose a new default app.

More:

The Virtual Keyboard Sucks

Typing with your Android phone's default on-screen keyboard can be an exercise in frustration. You keep hitting the wrong keys, you have to change modes every time you need to type a number and the predictive text never guesses the word you're typing. Even worse, the keyboard is so ugly that you wish you could type without looking.

If you don't like your phone or tablet's default keyboard, Android makes it easy to install a better third-party alternative. Searching through the Google Play store, you can find over a dozen keyboards that offer superior predictive text, dedicated number rows and custom skins. You can even get different keyboard layouts and resizable keyboards.

More:

You Have an Outdated Version of Android

Android's latest iteration is Jelly Bean (version 4.2), but your phone is still rocking a very stale Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) or maybe even Gingerbread (2.3). In other words, you're missing out on such key features as the Google Now voice assistant, detailed notifications and support for all of today's modern apps. You can pray that some day your carrier or manufacturer will take pity on you and deliver an over-the-air OS update or you can take matters into your own hands by rooting your device and installing a custom ROM.

Rooting one's Android device is not for the faint of heart. The process involves a series of complicated steps which, if followed incorrectly, could turn your phone or tablet into a brick that won't be covered under your warranty. However, if you're willing to take the risk, you can find rooting instructions for your specific device at sites like the unlockr or xda developers forums. With a rooted phone, you can not only update the operating system, but also run apps that provide otherwise unavailable capabilities such as video screen capture or overclocking.

Saunders, who has also been head coach with the National Basketball Association's Detroit Pistons and Washington Wizards, was appointed on a five-year deal in place of David Kahn, who was fired on Thursday.

"I've made a lot of great decisions in my life, and a lot of things in business that have worked well," Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor told reporters before introducing Saunders, who has been given a minority ownership stake in the franchise.

"Occasionally I've made a wrong decision and perhaps supporting Flip leaving our organization as coach is one of those things I've done wrong.

"But in the meantime, Flip has gone out and stayed in the NBA, coached for some other teams ... I just think that he can bring that as part of his overall philosophy back to our organization and make it a better organization."

Minnesota finished the 2012-13 season fourth-last in the 15-team Western Conference after posting a 31-51 record.

They have not reached the playoffs since the 2003-04 season when they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Finals.

"There's no question that there's a lot of work ahead with this team," said Saunders, 58. "And what I mean by that is that when a team has been to the lottery for eight straight years and won 31 games, you have work to do.

"So we've got to roll up our sleeves and do that, but that's what Minnesota people do. Now we have talent, we have some good young talent but they by far have not reached their potential."

Saunders will inherit a developing team that possesses an All-Star power forward in Kevin Love, a talented point guard in Spaniard Ricky Rubio and an experienced coach in Rick Adelman.

ATHLETICS

Five Kenyan marathon runners have been suspended for doping and six athletes, including former Olympic and three-times world hammer champion Ivan Tsikhan, will be disciplined for failing dope tests after their samples from the 2005 Helsinki world championships were re-examined.

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) retests samples from previous championships in an effort to detect substances for which no valid tests existed at the time.

Seventeen unidentified athletes face bans after abnormalities were found in the biological passports which track changes in their blood profiles.

BASEBALL

Major League Baseball League (MLB) commissioner Bud Selig has called for stiffer penalties for players caught using performance-enhancing drugs in a sport which already has the strictest testing programme of the four major U.S. sports.

Baseball recently added blood tests and baseline testosterone readings to its tests and players caught for a third time receive lifetime bans.

The MLB is investigating a newspaper report that several players had been supplied with human growth hormone, testosterone and anabolic steroids by a Florida anti-ageing clinic. New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, one of the players named in the report who has confessed to taking steroids between 2001 and 2003, denied the allegations.

BOXING

American Lamont Peterson, who had not fought for 14 months after a positive test for synthetic testosterone, retained his IBF light-welterweight title by stopping compatriot Kendall Holt in the eighth round.

Peterson was stripped of his WBA belt when he tested positive after injecting testosterone pellets into his hip before a rematch last year with Amir Khan, the Briton he defeated to take two world titles. The fight was called off.

The IBF had allowed Peterson to keep its belt, saying it was happy with an independent investigation which accepted Peterson's camp's claim that the testosterone had been taken for therapeutic reasons.

CYCLING

After years of denial, Lance Armstrong admitted on a U.S. television show that he had taken banned drugs before each of his seven Tour de France victories.

Danish cyclist Michael Rasmussen, who was kicked off his team in the 2007 Tour de France for lying about his whereabouts, told a news conference that he doped for 12 years.

GOLF

The PGA is set to announce its decision following an admission by former world number one Vijay Singh that he had used deer antler spray containing a banned substance.

The three-times major winner told Sports Illustrated magazine that he had used the spray, which is believed to speed up recovery from injury, but had been unaware that it contained a banned anabolic agent.

- - - -

RUGBY LEAGUE

Six leading Australian rugby league clubs confirmed they were being investigated for possible doping violations following a report released by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Agency (ASADA) after a year-long investigation by the country's leading criminal intelligence organisation.

The report, which said the use of performance-enhancing drugs was widespread among professional and amateur athletes in Australia, was described as the "blackest day in Australian sport" by a former head of ASADA.

SOCCER

FIFA announced it would use biological passports at this year's Confederations Cup and next year's World Cup in Brazil.

The decision followed a call from Arsene Wenger, the manager of English Premier League side Arsenal, to introduce compulsory blood testing.

Peru midfielder Joel Sanchez was banned for two years after failing a dope test in a World Cup qualifier against Bolivia last October.

SWIMMING

Three Russian swimmers were banned for doping in two days by the country's anti-doping agency.

One of the trio, European 100 metres backstroke short-course record holder Ksenia Moskvina, was banned for six years after failing a second test in three months.

TENNIS

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) announced it would introduce biological passports and increase the number of blood tests.

The 82-year-old "Oracle of Omaha" joined the service and sent his first tweet on Thursday, picking up more than 45,000 followers in just under 45 minutes.

"Warren is in the house," Buffett said under the handle "@WarrenBuffett."

The handle was not officially verified by Twitter, but was confirmed by Fortune magazine, which hosted Buffett for a live webcast Thursday. It was billed as the first social media event for the notoriously technology-averse billionaire.

If followers were dollars, Buffett is having even more success on Twitter than he had with one of his best investments ever, his 2008 stake in Goldman Sachs Group Inc.

That deal gave him preferred stock that paid dividends at $900 a minute. On Twitter, he has gathered 1,000 followers a minute.

By joining Twitter, the Berkshire Hathaway Inc chief executive officer now stands in good mogul company. Other relatively recent converts to the service include News Corp CEO Rupert Murdoch (@RupertMurdoch) and former U.S. President Bill Clinton (@BillClinton).
