Midfield duo Youssef Msakni and Oussama Darragi are the notable absentees in the squad named by the Dutchman for his first official game as head coach of the Carthage Eagles. FIFA said studies showed that the top terms used by the public to describe Fuleco included "Brazilian," "nature," "friendly" and "passion for football."

4. Consistently the best player on the best team.

Again, no one ever accused Messi of playing for the best team in the world when he won the award four years (three years in its current form) in a row. While Robben provided many sparkling moments for die Roten -- indeed, I would've picked him over Messi for the three-man shortlist -- week in and week out, throughout this year, Ribery shone the brightest in a team of stars.

5. Don't make excuses for Ronaldo or Messi.

Both are individually brilliant. Both have deserved to win (or have been voted for) over the past several years. And both have ridiculous goal totals. But if the award were based solely on goals scored, FIFA should just call it such: A Torschuetzenkoenig der Welt (I obviously prefer the German).

After a site visit to Curitiba on Tuesday, Valcke said work at the Arena da Baixada stadium was "delicate" and far behind schedule. He added: "To be very honest, the situation as it stands is not ideal. The stadium is very delayed and well outside the delivery schedule to ensure best use by Fifa and the Fifa World Cup."

In a new effort to push the work forward, he announced the creation of a steering and technical committee, comprising representatives from world football's governing body, local officials and Clube Atlético Paranaense that will issue daily progress reports. More workers will be brought on site and a third shift will be introduced to speed up construction. The Parana government has promised to put up an extra 39m reals (£10m) to pay for the increased workforce.

By 18 February, Valcke said all parties have to decide "whether the stadium is in a position on that date to give us the confidence to hold World Cup matches there, without risking the organisation of the event".

Brazilian officials acknowledge completion is still some way off. Luís Fernandes, the executive secretary of Brazil's Ministry of Sport, said: "What all sides have found is that, if the pace of work at the stadium in Curitiba were to be kept as it is, then it would not be ready with the quality and requirements necessary to host the Fifa World Cup."

Though it must still be considered a remote possibility, a change of stadium and schedule so close to the opening match of the tournament on 12 June would be a nightmare for organisers.

Arena da Baixada is due to stage four matches: Spain v Australia, Honduras v Ecuador, Iran v Nigeria and Algeria v Russia. Tens of thousands of fans have already bought tickets and millions of dollars are likely to have been spent on flight and hotel reservations. National teams will need time to organise training camps. It is also far from certain that an alternative stadium could be prepared to meet Fifa standards at such short notice.

Curitiba is not the only problem. Valcke has also visited São Paulo's Itaquerão stadium, which fell further behind schedule after a fatal accident in November. Local organisers said the stadium would be inaugurated on 15 April, less than two months before it is due to stage the opening match of the World Cup.

Labour unions warned safety standards are being compromised as a result of a last-minute rush after two other workers were killed in December at a stadium in Manaus that is also still incomplete. All World Cup stadiums were supposed to be finished by the end of December.

Earlier this month, Blatter said no host nation has been so far behind in his tenure. He and Rousseff will be looking to put on a more united front after their meeting on Thursday.

Rousseff, who is in Switzerland for the Davos World Economic Forum, and the Minister of Sports, Aldo Rebelo, have been invited to the FIFA headquarters for a "courtesy meeting". They are expected to discuss preparations, including how they plan to address the delays and concerns about a repeat of the protests that marred last year's Confederations Cup. With FIFA 13 EA introduced voice commands for the Xbox 360 version and Kinect. The voice commands let you activate tactics, change formations and trigger substitutions without pausing the game. In Be A Pro mode you can shout for a pass, send a teammate on a run or call for a shot.

In FIFA 13 the referees and linesmen listen to what you say, too. Use coarse language and the commentators may mention it and the referee may become stricter with fouls and bookings.

Wilson said for FIFA 14, EA is focusing on improving the voice command functionality.

"We feel the evolution of that will do more for gamers this year [than motion]. We're not quite at motion yet. We're running some prototypes, but as yet we're not seeing anything that universally enhances the core sports experience."

He added: "Right now we're still in a position where we see voice as the feature of Kinect that's most relevant to FIFA. And that's how you'll see it this year.

"We did voice last year. There are new capabilities of voice 14 FIFA Ultimate Team PC Coins recognition in the new Kinect the team is trying to utilise to make sure we take that to the next level and give you an even greater level of control through voice in the game."

'Pro Shot', 'Teammate Intelligence' and 'Variable Dribble Touches' are marketing buzz-words for a collective of (relatively) less significant features planned for this year's edition. Nevertheless, EA hopes that together they'll represent a meaningful and significant update to FIFA's most successful instalment to date.

"Key to FIFA this year is to feel the exhilaration of scoring great goals, and not just the nature of the shot itself, but the build up to the shot and finding opportunities," producer Nick Channon tells CVG.

"In previous games, at times there was so much space to run at defenders that it became very much backwards and forwards, which lead to quite repetitive, cheap goals. That's something that we want to change," he adds.

Key to FIFA 14's tweaks is the way sprinting works, with last year's First Touch Control now extended to each footballer's dribble ability.

"EA has placed an emphasis on playing through the midfield, rather than the end-to-end scramble"

With the ball no longer automatically glued to feet during a run, more emphasis is placed on the individual skills of your players. Messi and Bale types will touch and control the ball with exhilarating ease, while lesser players are hampered by fewer perfect touches which, in turn, creates opportunities for defenders to win back possession.

Along with this, the game includes 'Sprint Dribble Turns', which break free from last year's carthorse turning and allow players to manoeuvre at speed in any direction. With these features combined, EA has placed an emphasis on playing through the midfield, rather than the end-to-end scramble that could often occur in previous games.

"You really now have to think about when you use dribble, where as before it could be quite powerful to use constantly and run down the line," says Channon.

"Now when you start that dribble you push the ball out as players naturally do, which creates and opportunity for the defender. It makes you really think about when you use dribbling."

The most intriguing, and likely divisive element of the new sprinting system is the introduction of Protect The Ball, which as the name suggests allows players to block defenders from the ball using the left trigger (skill moves are now activated entirely with the right stick).

Protect can be used at any speed, allowing dribblers to fend off contesting opponents before continuing their run. It looks to introduce strategy to parts of the game that have previously gone lacking, and combined with Variable Dribble Touches should add both demands and benefits to winger players.

FIFA 14's producer compares the feature to the mechanics of a driving game: "In a driving game right trigger is accelerate and left trigger is break. In our game right trigger is sprint - or accelerate - and left trigger is protect the ball - or break."

Midfield Battle

With FIFA 13, EA introduced Attacking Intelligence, a significant step forward to the way offensive AI players behave and assist on the pitch. For 14, EA is aiming to make similar improvements to the way computer team-mates defend.

Just like how the attacking system compelled players to make smarter runs and ghost into space, Teammate Intelligence promises to make defenders recognise opportunities to provide support, track opponents' runs and mark more efficiently.

Visiting EA's offices in Guildford, CVG is shown a Gary Neville-esque dissection how FIFA 13 defenders gave their opponents acres of space, along with examples of fullbacks being foolishly pulled out of position, allowing attackers to run unchecked and exploit space.

Channon promises that such naive AI defending will now be a thing of the past: "Teammate Intelligence dramatically changes the way the game feels," he claims.

"In FIFA 13, the way defenders marked their men was pretty loose. There was a big gap between the attackers, the midfield and defenders. We're going to tighten that up, get defenders closer to the men they're marking, which means you'll now get lots more midfield battles - you need to move the ball around and switch play."

He insists that the system doesn't make the game harder, just 14 FIFA Ultimate Team PC Coins more fun. "You have to be more varied and that for me is what really stands out about the new game."
