通訳をしていたときに、この方法で何度か切り抜けました(汗)。優秀な通訳さんは事前資料を読むだけで大丈夫なのでしょうが、私にはそれだけではなじめない部分がありましたね。

そんなときは、関連するウェブの記事などを一つ訳してみます。

止まらずに誰かに内容を伝えるつもりで訳すとその内容に入り込んだ感覚が得られます。

そして自分なりの意見を英語で書いてみると効果的なのですが、今回は訳すところまで、、、やりました。

内向的な人と引っ込み思案（シャイ）は違うというテーマで書かれています。私もどちらかというと内向的(!?)なので勇気付けられる内容ですね～。

Contrary to what most people think, an introvert is not simply a person who is shy. In fact, being shy has little to do with being an introvert! Shyness has an element of apprehension, nervousness and anxiety, and while an introvert may also be shy, introversion itself is not shyness. Basically, an introvert is a person who is energized by being alone and whose energy is drained by being around other people.
大抵の人が考えているのとは反対に、内向的な人は単なる引っ込み思案ではない。それどころか、シャイであることと内向的であることは関連性が薄いのである。内気な性格には不安、心配、懸念の要素が含まれており、内向的な人が引っ込み思案である可能性はあるが、内向性そのものがシャイな性格ではない。基本的には、内向的な人は一人でいることで活力を得られ、周りに人がいるとその活力が奪われてしまう。

Introverts are more concerned with the inner world of the mind. They enjoy thinking, exploring their thoughts and feelings. They often avoid social situations because being around people drains their energy. This is true even if they have good social skills. After being with people for any length of time, such as at a party, they need time alone to "recharge."
内向的な人は心の奥にある世界により関心を持っている。思いや感覚を探りながら考え事を楽しむ。社交的な場を避けることもあるのは、人が回りにいると活力が失われるからだ。これは本当である。内向的な人が社会的スキルに長けている場合もである。パーティなどで短時間でも人と過ごした後は、一人で「再充電する」時間が必要なのである。

When introverts want to be alone, it is not, by itself, a sign of depression. It means that they either need to regain their energy from being around people or that they simply want the time to be with their own thoughts. Being with people, even people they like and are comfortable with, can prevent them from their desire to be quietly introspective.
内向的な人が一人になりたいと感じるとき、それ自体はうつ病の兆候ではない。人に囲まれて失われた活力を回復する必要があることを意味する。あるいは単に自分の考えを巡らせる時間がほしいのかもしれない。好きで一緒にいて心地よいと思う人といるときは、黙って内省的になりたいという願望が起きないかもしれない。
Being introspective, though, does not mean that an introvert never has conversations. However, those conversations are generally about ideas and concepts, not about what they consider the trivial matters of social small talk.
内省的であるからといって内向的な人が会話をまったくしないわけではない。しかし、そういった会話はほとんどの場合考えや概念についてであって、彼らが社会のつまらない世間話と考えることについてではない。

「目に見える目標」と 「目に見えない目標」があると思います。

会社員をしているころこんなことがありました。

年間目標の設定をする前にPay for performance system(能力給制度）がスタートしたのです。

当時、会社が外資系になったばかりということもあり、英語は最重要課題でした。

上司はTOEICのスコアなど「目に見える目標」にしてほしいと言うのです。

私や同僚はどちらかというと「目に見えない目標」を思い浮かべていました。

「Meetingで困らないようになる」、「メールを書くスピードを上げる」、

「プレゼンで言葉に詰まらない」などです。

結局は上司に言われてTOEICのスコアを書かされました。

8割がたの人が目標を達成したのにもかかわらず、もやもやは消えませんでした。

TOEICのスコアが上がっても、本来の実務スキルはほとんど変わらないんですね。

厳しい現実です。

勉強を始めたときや大きくレベルアップを図りたいときは

「目に見える目標」は明確でやる気も維持できます。

あるレベルや時期を越えると、どうでしょう。

だんだんと「目に見えない目標」がメインになってきませんか？

ものさしが曖昧なだけに、続けるのが難しいのも事実ですね。

Seiji Umemura has come to the US on business trips several times, but now he somehow feels uncomfortable. Having to live in an unfamiliar environment is little bit of a pressure. On top of that, he is shy by nature and just cannot be outgoing like Americans. Starting a conversation makes him feel suffocated.

Kei Breakstone who is in charge of personnel told him he needs to improve networking skills. Umemura often feels lost at business gatherings but it is not uncommon even for Americans to feel out of place. When you go to a meeting, most attendees are having their mobile phones on their ears or touching the phones to avoid making eye contacts.

Umemura knows it is important to use such events as networking opportunities but he cannot break his barriers yet. Breakstone gives him advice that the first step to get better at networking is to overcome yourself.

日本語を読みながら同時に英訳していきます。

多少（かなり！？）日本語に引きずられるところはありますが、前から訳す癖がつきますね。

専門用語も多いのですが、思ったより読みやすいですね。

ブッシュ政権時代に、大統領輸出評議会のメンバーに任命する目的で行われた身元調査(background check)だったのですね。婚外子(child born out of wedlock)のことから、爆弾脅迫事件のことまで公になってしまうなんて正直怖いです。

オススメしたいのがMeetupです。

私も先月始めたばかりですが、かなり練習になります。

旦那にmeat upってどんなエクササイズだ？

って聞かれたときにはかなり引きましたが、

同じ興味を持った人が集まる「ネットワーク（サークル？）」のようなものです。

美術館へ行ったり、読んだ本について語ったり、中にはただの飲み会やパーティもあります。

一度だけでも参加できるのが良いですね。

いくつか参加してみましましたが、色々な国の人に会うことができます。

先日は参加者が私とイギリス人の方だけでしたので２時間以上話しました。

アウトプット練習には最適ですね。

内容が難しそうなmeetupは日本人が圧倒的に少なく、いても英語上級者がほとんどです。

まずはCDで一文ずつ英日逐次通訳。これは問題ない様子。

しかし、日本語訳を英語にサイトラしてみると詰まってしまうものです。

なんとなく思いつくのが　be released, come out ですが、

このニュースでは　"be about to open"で公開が迫るとしている。

アメリカの映画に関する情報サイトを見てみると、

When Umemura was working in Osaka, he had some experience of having a mentor. However, his pressure from work was so significant that his relationship with his mentor gradually faded out.

At H&B, you start searching for a mentor by filling out necessary information in the application first.

インド北部やパキスタンで使われているんですね。アラビア語とペルシア語に似ているみたいです。

ペルシア語をかじったことがあるので、（اردو）が右からUrduって読めました。
