THE CASE

Jackson's mother wants a jury to determine that the promoter of Jackson's planned comeback concerts didn't properly investigate Dr. Conrad Murray, who a criminal jury convicted of involuntary manslaughter for Jackson's June 2009 death. AEG's attorney says the case is about personal choice, namely Jackson's decision to have Murray serve as his doctor and give him doses of a powerful anesthetic as a sleep aid. Millions, possibly billions, of dollars are at stake.

WHAT HAPPENED THIS PAST WEEK

AEG Live CEO Randy Phillips told jurors he received conflicting information about Jackson's health just days before the singer's death, but was reassured by Jackson's personal physician that everything was fine. Phillips also said he thought Jackson looked good during a meeting five days before he died, alleviating his fears.

Phillips concluded his testimony after eight days on the stand and pointed questions from Katherine Jackson's attorney about his memory of events. The executive also tried to bolster AEG's contentions that it was Jackson's choice to hire Murray, telling jurors that the singer was a sophisticated, forceful businessman.

"We seem to be talking about Michael like he's the 5-year-old lead singer of the Jackson Five. ... That was not the man I dealt with," Phillips said, describing the singer as a forceful businessman who dictated who he wanted to work with on the tour.

"You can't give up on people that's not our job," Phillips said regarding working with entertainers who have documented problems of substance abuse.

OUTSIDE THE COURTROOM

Authorities released a dispatch call related to the hospitalization of Jackson's 15-year-old daughter, Paris. According to information from sheriff's deputies at the scene, Paris Jackson took 20 Motrin pills and cut her arm with a kitchen knife.

Jurors will likely hear from an expert witness and should see a return of Jackson's makeup artist, Karen Faye, whose cross-examination by an AEG attorney has been delayed by her work schedule and the availability of other witnesses.

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Oprah Winfrey has donated a small chunk of her estimated $2.8 billion net worth to help build The Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture.

The OWN chairman and CEO has just donated $12 million to the museum's capital fund. Combined with a previous donation of $1 million, Winfrey's $13 million is the museum's largest donation to date.

"I am so proud of African American history and its contributions to our nation as a whole," Winfrey said in a statement.

"I am deeply appreciative of those who paved the path for me and all who follow in their footsteps. By investing in this museum, I want to help ensure that we both honor and preserve our culture and history, so that the stories of who we are will live on for generations to come."

Slated to open in late-2015, the museum's theater will be dedicated to the media mogul. The Oprah Winfrey Theater, one of the largest spaces in the museum at 350 seats, will serve as a center for performers, artists, scholars, educators and other opinion leaders. The museum will be the nation's largest destination totally devoted to Black history and culture.

"We are inspired and profoundly grateful for Ms. Winfrey's generosity at this important time," said Lonnie G. Bunch III, founding director of the museum.

"Her gifts will forever be associated with harnessing the power of art and creative expression to build bridges between cultures and enrich people's lives. Programming at the Oprah Winfrey Theater will mirror the museum's commitment to use African American history and culture as a lens to see what it means to be an American and to help all Americans remember."

Congressional funding provides half of the museum's $500 million construction costs. Winfrey's $13 million gift goes toward the other $250,000, which the organization must raise itself.

Additionally, Winfrey has served on the museum's advisory council since 2004.

Philip, who earlier this week spent his 92nd birthday in the hospital, received a flurry of family visits Friday. Charles and his wife, Camilla, arrived at the London Clinic shortly before his sons William and Harry joined them.

Earlier, Philip's granddaughters Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie also made a trip to see him.

Officials say that Queen Elizabeth II's husband is recovering well after the exploratory surgery last Friday. He will continue to be hospitalized for several days before going into convalescence for about two months.

When asked by reporters waiting outside the clinic about his father, Charles smiled and said "much better."

NEW YORK (Reuters) - He's been commander in chief, Time magazine's 1993 man of the year, had hopes of becoming "First Laddie" of the United States and now former U.S. President Bill Clinton is in line for a new title - Father of the Year.

The non-profit National Father's Day Council plans to award him that honor at a New York fundraiser for Save the Children on Tuesday.

Clinton's daughter, Chelsea, was just 12 years old when the family moved into the White House and Bill Clinton and wife former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton worked to keep her out of the limelight.

One of the most iconic images of the family to come out of that period was when the three were photographed, walking hand in hand across the White House lawn to a waiting helicopter shortly after the news broke of Bill Clinton's affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. That scandal lead to Clinton's impeachment for perjury.

Chelsea Clinton, now 33 and a special correspondent for NBC News, said on Twitter "I completely agree!!!" when the award was first made public in January.

The National Father's Day Council cited Clinton's philanthropy work through the William J. Clinton Foundation and the Clinton Global Initiative, both started after he left the White House in 2001.

In addition to his charity work, Bill Clinton appeared on the campaign trail in 2008 when Hillary Clinton ran for president, joking that if she was elected his honorific title could be "First Laddie."

Clinton, 66, as well as Macy's Inc Chief Executive Terry Lundgren, will be honored for "their success in balancing accomplished careers and the demands of fatherhood," the council said in a statement.

Since the Father of the Year award was first bestowed in 1941, the citation has gone to Presidents Dwight Eisenhower, John Kennedy and Ronald Reagan, Generals Douglas MacArthur, Colin Powell and Norman Schwarzkopf, and sports notables Shaquille O'Neal and George Foreman.

Years after leaving the White House, as he prepared for his daughter's 2010 wedding to investment banker Marc Mezvinsky, Bill Clinton said he was preparing for what he called the most important job he would ever do: "walking Chelsea down the aisle."

It also appeared that investors have begun to reassure themselves that central bank cuts to stimulus measures still appear to be some way off.

Brenda Kelly, Senior Market Strategist at IG Market said she sees "signs of exhaustion in the overall downward equity correction" of recent weeks, which was prompted by fears the U.S. Federal Reserve might wind down its bond-buying program and that the Bank of Japan has done all it is prepared to do to stimulate the Japanese economy.

But "the suggestion from the Bank of Japan minutes overnight was that more aggressive action could occur, should the policymakers deem it necessary," she said, and "it is extremely unlikely that Federal Reserve President Ben Bernanke will hurry to completely remove the liquidity punchbowl" though she said the possibility of a rate hike could not be ruled out completely.

Worries about what the Fed's next move might be will continue to keep markets on edge until its Open Market Committee meets next week.

In Europe, Britain's FSTE 100 rose 0.3 percent to 6,321.94. France's CAC-40 gained 0.2 percent to 3,805.50 and Germany's DAX rose 0.5 percent to 8,157.88.

U.S. markets rose Thursday on data showing U.S. retail sales rose 0.6 percent in May, their strongest showing in six months. Also, the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits was smaller than expected last week.

Futures forecast a slightly lower open Friday, with the S&P 500 seen down 0.2 percent and the Dow Jones Industrials seen flat at 15,115.

Kelly of IG Markets said that U.S. data due out later will determine the tone for the second half of the European session. Manufacturing data for May is expected to show an increase of 0.3 percent, compared to a fall of 0.5 percent in April. The consumer confidence index is expected to remain at a five year high of 84.5. "A miss here could send equity markets tracking lower," she said.

In Asia, Tokyo's Nikkei 225, the regional heavyweight, gained 1.9 percent to close at 12,686.52, recovering some of its losses after Thursday's 6.4 percent plunge .

China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index gained 0.6 percent to 2,162.04, coming off its lowest close in six months following Thursday's 2.8 percent slide. Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 0.4 percent to 20,969.14 and Seoul added 0.4 percent to 1,889.24. India's Sensex rose 1.6 percent to 19,126.03.

Japanese markets have weakened following a burst of euphoria over Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's economic turnaround plan. Markets had surged 50 percent since the start of the year but doubts are mounting about whether Abe's plan will work.

The Nikkei's plunge Thursday took the Japanese market to a 20 percent decline from its May 22 high the definition of a bear market.

News reports said finance ministers from the 17 euro countries were due to meet Friday in Rome to discuss possible support for banks.

"A deal would likely be viewed as positive as other components of the banking union will take a long time before they are implemented," said Credit Agricole CIB analyst Mitul Kotecha.

In currency markets, the euro declined to $1.3321 from $1.3345 late Thursday in New York. The dollar was 0.4 percent weaker at 94.91 yen.

Benchmark oil for July delivery rose 38 cents to $97.07, gaining on Thursday's improved U.S. economic data.

Willie Anderson won the first of 33 playoffs in U.S. Open history with an 85 to win by one shot over Alex Smith in 1901 at Myopia Hunt north of Boston. Tiger Woods won the most recent playoff, a 19-hole thriller over Rocco Mediate on a badly injured left leg.

Arnold Palmer was in three U.S. Open playoffs and lost them all. The great Bobby Jones twice lost U.S. Open playoffs by a single shot.

There have been a few dull playoffs along the way, such as Jones winning by 23 shots in a 36-hole playoff over Al Espinosa, and Retief Goosen beating Mark Brooks in 2001 at Southern Hills. Both wore khaki pants and a white shirt.

Here are five of the most memorable playoffs in U.S. Open history:

5. BILLY BURKE AND THE LONGEST OPEN

Here's one U.S. Open record that will never be broken in what amounts to golf's version of a doubleheader, Billy Burke had to play the equivalent of two 72-hole tournaments to win the 1931 U.S. Open at Inverness.

Burke closed with a 73 to make up a two-shot deficit against George Von Elm, setting up a 36-hole playoff the next day. This was one year after Von Elm lost in a 28-hole match in the U.S. Amateur at Merion. He was no stranger to overtime.

In a see-saw battle, Burke finally emerged with a one-shot lead with a birdie on the 15th hole of the second round, only for Von Elm to birdie the 18th hole to match him at 7-over 149. That led to another 36-hole playoff the next day, and Burke started poorly with a bogey and double bogey. He finally caught up to Von Elm on the front nine of the afternoon round, and pulled ahead for good when Von Elm bogeyed the 14th hole. This time, Von Elm was out of heroics. Burke shot 148 to win by one shot.

They had to play 144 holes over five days. The next year, the USGA voted to return playoffs to 18 holes.

4. ALL HALE THE THREE-TIME CHAMPION

Hale Irwin was 45 and considered a part-time player on the PGA Tour, winless in more than five years. A two-time U.S. Open champion, his exemption had run out the previous year, so the USGA awarded him a special invitation to the 1990 U.S. Open at Medinah.

Four shots behind going into the final round, Irwin ran off four straight birdies on the back nine and looked like he would come up short when his 7-iron to the 18th was some 50 feet away. He made the putt for a 67, and ran toward the fans and gave them high-fives. It got him into a playoff with Mike Donald at 280.

Irwin again was on the ropes, two shots behind with three holes to play. Irwin hit 2-iron from 210 yards to 6 feet for birdie on the 16th hole. Donald went from the rough to a bunker and blasted out to 15 feet on the 18th hole, giving him a par putt to win the U.S. Open. He missed, leading to the first sudden-death playoff in championship history. Donald missed his 20-foot birdie putt, and Irwin made his 10-footer for birdie.

He remains the oldest U.S. Open champion, and the last player to win after getting a special exemption.

3. THE PLAYOFF THAT PUT AMERICAN GOLF ON THE MAP

The 1913 U.S. Open at The Country Club remains the most significant major championship in history. Francis Ouimet, the first amateur to win the U.S. Open, took down British heavyweights Harry Vardon and Ted Ray, a win that put golf on newspaper front pages.

The three-man playoff was set up by Ouimet's 74 in the third round to make up a five-shot deficit, and a 79 in the final round to match Vardon and Ray at 304.

They all went out in 38, and Ouimet took the lead for good on the 10th hole when the British stars both three-putted for bogey. Ouimet gained another stroke on them with a par on the 12th hole, and Vardon birdied the next hole to trail by one.

It came down to Ouimet and Vardon with two holes to play, and the 17th hole proved pivotal. Vardon tried to cut the corner of the dogleg, found a bunker and had to pitch out sideways on his way to a bogey. Ouimet made a birdie putt, and suddenly the lead was three shots going to the final hole.

Ouimet closed with a par for a 72, while Vardon made double bogey for a 77, making the margin look more than it really was. Ray shot 78.

2. HOGAN COMPLETES COMEBACK AT MERION

There is a famous photo of Ben Hogan hitting 1-iron into the 18th green at Merion in the 1950 U.S. Open for a par. But his comeback didn't end there. All that did was get Hogan into a three-way playoff with Lloyd Mangrum and Tom Fazio.

Hogan putted so poorly in the final round that he had his brother, Royal, ship a brass putter to Merion. The club arrived before the playoff, but not in time for Hogan to practice with it, so he stuck with his old putter.

Hogan had a one-shot lead through 13 holes of the playoff. Fazio made four bogeys down the stretch and was out of the picture, though Mangrum hung tough. He responded to a bogey on the 14th with a birdie on the next hole to stay one shot behind. On the next hole, everything changed. Mangrum marked his ball so Fazio could finish, and then marked it again to blow a bug off his ball. That was against the rules at the time for the U.S. Open, players only were allowed to mark the ball if it were in a competitor's line and Fazio was assessed a two-shot penalty. Hogan closed with a 69 and won by four shots over Mangrum, while Fazio shot 75.

Hogan, in a near-fatal car accident just 16 months earlier, said this U.S. Open meant the most to him because it proved he could still win.

1. ON WOUNDED KNEE AT TORREY PINES

Only after Tiger Woods captured the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines did anyone realized how unlikely it was that he even played.

He had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee two days after the Masters to clean out cartilage damage, but did not want to repair ligaments so he could finish out the majors. Two weeks before the U.S. Open, he suffered a double stress fracture in his left leg.

Woods defiantly ignored doctors' advice to rest for six weeks, telling them he was going to play the U.S. Open and "I'm going to win."

It wasn't easy. His knee began to buckle without warning, but Woods played on. He turned a five-shot deficit into a one-shot lead over the last six holes of the third round, including a 70-foot eagle putt on the 13th and a 30-foot eagle putt on the 18th. But he struggled in the final round, and came to the par-5 18th one shot behind Rocco Mediate. Woods missed the fairway, laid up in the rough, and then hit a sand wedge to 12 feet. He made it to force a playoff, one more round on tender legs.

Woods built an early lead on Monday, only for Mediate to rally and take a one-shot lead into the final hole. Woods needed another birdie, and this time reached the green in two for a two-putt birdie to force extra holes. They went to the par-4 seventh, where Mediate found trouble off the tee and on his second shot.

Woods made par to win the U.S. Open. One week later, he had surgery that ended his season. He has not won another major since.

The space station's original treadmill has not yet run its course.

The "Treadmill Vibration Isolation System" (TVIS), which was used by both astronauts and cosmonauts to exercise aboard the International Space Station for more than 12 years was not jettisoned on Tuesday (June 11) onboard a spent Russian cargo freighter, as earlier reported.

A NASA spokesperson confirmed Tuesday afternoon that the information earlier provided toby the space agency was in error.

The device, which is no longer in use, will instead leave the station and be discarded with the next Russian unmanned resupply vehicle, Progress M-18M (50P), which as of Tuesday was scheduled to undock on July 26. After its departure, the cargo craft and its contents including the TVIS treadmill will be destroyed during its descent back into Earth's atmosphere.

The TVIS was replaced aboard the station by a Russian-built unit that was first put into use recently and by a more advanced U.S. treadmill named after television comedian Stephen Colbert.

A space apparatus that for more than a dozen years enabled both astronauts and cosmonauts to literally run around the Earth bid farewell to its home on orbit Tuesday (June 11). The International Space Station's original treadmill is now on its way to its fiery destruction aboard a spent Russian cargo freighter.

The now-discarded exercise device, called the(pronounced "tee-viss"), was used by the orbiting outpost's first 34 resident crews from November 2000 until March of this year, when it was replaced by a new Russian-built unit. The 12-year-old running machine (and sometimes marathon track) was previously succeeded by a more advanced U.S.after the television comedian Stephen Colbert.

"There has been a history of treadmills, trying to get them to work pretty well in space, and it is no easy feat," said NASA astronaut , who ran on the TVIS, and later the(Combined Operational Load Bearing External Resistance Treadmill), to stay in shape during her two long-duration in 2006 and 2012. []

Astronauts and cosmonauts use treadmills and other types of exercise devices as a countermeasure to the debilitating effects that extended exposure to microgravity has on the human body, including the loss of muscle mass and bone density.

Williams made history on the TVIS by becoming the first person to . On April 16, 2007, as thousands on the ground ran in the Boston Marathon, Williams completed the same distance on the stationary-but-still-circling-the-Earth treadmill.

"It made it through the [marathon's] 26.2 miles without a fault," Williams recalled in an interview with collectSPACE about the TVIS's legacy.

Last month, Russian cosmonauts who had been using the TVIS since it was replaced in the U.S. segment of the space station uninstalled the treadmill and packed it inside the Progress M-19M (51P) unmanned resupply craft to discard with other no-longer-needed hardware and trash. The cosmonauts now use the BD-2 treadmill, Russia's first new space exercise machine since the space station Mir.

Progress M-19M undocked from the station Tuesday at 9:58 a.m. EDT (1358 GMT). The spacecraft is scheduled to perform a deorbit burn on June 19, which will begin its destructive descent back into the Earth's atmosphere.

Balancing act

Designing a treadmill to work in space presents a unique set of challenges. Not only must the machine keep the person running on it from floating away, but it also needs to prevent each and every pounding step from vibrating the entire spacecraft to the detriment of the structure's health.

"It has taken us a little while to figure out a really good type of treadmill because , whenever you're running on a treadmill and you have any type of loading, you are putting that load into the spacecraft and that's not so good," explained Williams.

"TVIS sat on a gyro and that in itself was a little bit more of a monster than even the treadmill you see when you look at someone who was jogging on it," she added.

The spinning gyroscope counteracted the vibrations that were generated by running from then propagating across the station. It was up to bungees to keep the astronaut on the treadmill.

"On Earth, of course, gravity is holding you down. You don't have to wear any type of equipment that will hold you down," Williams said. "On TVIS, you had a harness that went over your shoulders and around your waist and then had two connecting points on either side of your hips that connected it to the structure, the frame of the treadmill. That way, every time you pushed up, it pulled you back down."

"The amount it was pulling you back down dictated how much you 'weighed.' It put a force back into the treadmill and so if the force was higher, you weighed more," she said. "You can think of it simply as a bungee that had to be stretched further and further and the more that it was stretched, the bigger the force."

A better compromise

A similar bungee , but on the newer treadmill, brackets and pins replace the gyro, leading to a more stabile running surface.

"TVIS sat on a gyro, so when it started, it was a little bit wobbly," Williams recalled. "The gyro spun up, it had to get up to a certain [rotation per minute] to be stabilized, and then TVIS could move in all six degrees of freedom."

"With the ability for [TVIS] to move around quite a bit, this is subjective, but I did find that it was a good exercise for neural-vestibular stimulation as well," Williams stated. "I would run with my eyes closed and you'd have to be able to figure out how to keep your balance while [running]. I think that helped a little bit with the neural-vestibular re-adaptation when I came back to Earth."

Other differences between the TVIS and its successors included its user interface TVIS had a dedicated control panel while T2 uses a laptop for control and its running surface. TVIS was much more narrow than the newer T2 treadmill, or those back on Earth.

"TVIS was skinnier, so you always had that feeling you're having to watch where you are stepping so you were not inadvertently stepping [off]," Williams said.

"So if you can imagine, if you're at a gym and on a normal treadmill, you are not really feeling like you have to watch where you are stepping. You're just doing your normal step and you're not thinking about that," she continued. "[On TVIS] you had to sort of watch where your feet were going, which caused people to run a little bit different, not quite like their normal stride."

FORT MEADE, Maryland (Reuters) - The court-martial of a soldier charged with using the WikiLeaks website for the biggest leak of classified information in U.S. history heads into a second day on Tuesday, with a cyber crime investigator the day's lead-off witness.

At the start of the trial on Monday, military prosecutors said Private First Class Bradley Manning, 25, had been driven by arrogance to leak more than 700,000 documents, combat videos and other data to the anti-secrecy website, hurting U.S. interests.

But defense attorney David Coombs portrayed Manning, a former intelligence analyst in Iraq, as naive but well intentioned in wanting to show the U.S. public the reality of war in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The Manning case has pitted U.S. civil liberties groups that want more transparency about military and diplomatic affairs against the government, which accuses Manning of endangering lives and souring sensitive diplomacy by leaking classified information.

Special Agent David Shaver from the Army Computer Crimes Investigation Unit, an expert on cyber crime, will be the first witness called on Tuesday, prosecutors told the judge, Colonel Denise Lind.

Shaver is among 141 government witnesses in the trial, which is scheduled to run until late August at the earliest. The defense has listed 46 witnesses.

Manning, a former intelligence analyst, could be sentenced to life in prison without parole if convicted. He faces 21 charges, including the most serious one of aiding the enemy, and prosecution under the Espionage Act of 1917.

He has been in confinement since he was arrested in May 2010 at Forward Operating Base Hammer east of Baghdad.

Testimony began after opening statements on Monday, with investigators detailing the seizure of two Army computers used by Manning as well as his personal computer, along with hard drives and other material.

WikiLeaks began exposing the secrets in 2010, stunning diplomats and U.S. officials who said the leaks endangered lives.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has taken refuge in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London since June 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning about allegations of rape and sexual assault. Assange denies the allegations.
