Christopher Harris claims he killed one member of the family in self-defense after finding the 14-year-old boy on a rampage in his home. But prosecutor Mike Atterberry said Thursday during closing arguments that the claim was "laughable."

Defense attorney Dan Fultz argued that the entire case against Harris rests on testimony from his younger brother, Jason Harris. The younger Harris admitted lying often to police in the days after the 2009 killings.

Rick and Ruth Gee were beaten to death with a tire iron along with the teen boy, Ruth Gee's son, Dillen Constant, her daughter, 16-year-old Justina Constant, and Rick Gee's 11-year-old son Austin.

After losing the first two games of the series and trailing 1-0 on the night to Tyler Kennedy's second period goal, Ottawa were just seconds away from losing a third straight to the top-seeded Penguins.

However, Daniel Alfredsson scored with 29 seconds left in regulation, despite the Senators being shorthanded, before Greening's goal cut the deficit in the best-of-seven series to 2-1. Game Four is in Ottawa on Wednesday.

Sidney Crosby was coming off a hat-trick that gave the Penguins command in Game Two but he was held without a point on Sunday.

Craig Anderson made 49 saves for the Sens, while Tomas Vokoun had 46 for the visitors.

The Senators also got a boost from the return of forward Jason Spezza, who had not played since January after undergoing back surgery. He was on the ice for just under 19 minutes and did not register a point.

After squaring the best-of-seven series in Chicago on Saturday, the Red Wings maintained the momentum on home ice to beat the top-seeded Blackhawks and move ahead 2-1 in the series.

Game Four is on Thursday, again in Detroit.

Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard weathered an early storm, making 15 of his 39 saves in the first period.

Seeded seventh in the West, Detroit took the game by the scruff of the neck in the second period and went 2-0 up on goals from Gustav Nyquist and Drew Miller just 31 seconds apart.

The Blackhawks pulled a goal back through Patrick Kane at 4:35 in the third period and thought they had tied it shortly after but Andrew Shaw's goal was waved off.

Pavel Datsyuk then restored Detroit's two-goal cushion two minutes later and the Red Wings held on for the win.

The Fed is conducting its third round of massive bond purchases known as quantitative easing. The aim has been to help drive down interest rates and spur lending.

But a recent run of strong U.S. economic data, largely related to housing and jobs, has fueled speculation that the Fed might consider changing course. The prospect of a less-easy monetary policy has put a brake on stocks this week and helped support the dollar.

On Wednesday, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke will appear before lawmakers in Congress and the central bank will release minutes of its most recent policy meeting. Both events have the potential to alter the mood in financial markets.

"What Bernanke has to say tomorrow will have a big bearing on the next move, not only in currency markets, but also equity markets," said Michael Hewson, senior market analyst at CMC Markets.

As a result, investors across financial markets were largely in wait-and-see mode.

In Europe, the FTSE 100 index of British shares ended the day up 0.4 percent at 6,786 a day after it closed at its highest level in over 12 years and in the wake of figures showing the inflation rate fell to 2.4 percent in April, its lowest in seven months. The fall in inflation has also raised the prospect that the Bank of England may enact another stimulus to shore up economic growth.

Elsewhere in Europe, Germany's DAX closed up 0.2 percent to 8,472. The CAC-40 in France was 0.3 percent higher at 4,036.

In the U.S., the Dow Jones industrial average was up 0.3 percent at 15,383 while the broader S&P 500 index was 0.2 percent higher at 1,669.

Over the past five years, the markets have become used to operating in an easy-money environment. The extra liquidity provided by many of the world's central banks has been recycled and has helped stock indexes hit highs despite a patchy recovery from recession. The Dow Jones and the S&P 500 indexes in the U.S. have both hit all-time highs as has Germany's DAX.

"It is broadly recognized that the fuel for this movement into risky investments has been the generous provision of cheap liquidity by central banks," said Jane Foley, an analyst at Rabobank International.

The dollar recovered part of its Monday losses when investors booked some recent gains the dollar has been increasingly in demand amid speculation of a winding down in the Fed's asset purchases. The dollar rose 0.3 percent to 102.43 yen while the euro was up slightly, 0.18 percent, to $1.2913.

The yen's renewed weakness against the dollar helped Japan's main Nikkei stock index to eke out a small 0.1 percent gain to close at 15,381.02, its highest finish in more than five years. The Nikkei has been a big winner this year, rising 48 percent, after the Bank of Japan announced a big monetary stimulus program designed to shake the country out of a two-decade stagnation and get prices rising, albeit modestly. One repercussion of that policy has been to pile the pressure on the yen a development that can help Japan's exporters and provide another fillip to growth.

Elsewhere in Asia, Hong Kong's Hang Seng declined 0.5 percent to 23,366.37 while South Korea's Kospi fell less than 0.1 percent to 1,981.09. Benchmarks in mainland China rose too.

Oil prices were subdued too, with the benchmark New York rate down 55 cents at $96.38 a barrel.

An international team of scientists confirmed Friday what the Everland Zoo has been saying for years: Their 5.5-ton tusker Koshik has an unusual and possibly unprecedented talent.

The 22-year-old Asian elephant can reproduce five Korean words by tucking his trunk inside his mouth to modulate sound, the scientists said in a joint paper published online in Current Biology. They said he may have started imitating human speech because he was lonely.

Koshik can reproduce "annyeong" (hello), "anja" (sit down), "aniya" (no), "nuwo" (lie down) and "joa" (good), the paper says.

One of the researchers said there is no conclusive evidence that Koshik understands the sounds he makes, although the elephant does respond to words like "anja."

Everland Zoo officials in the city of Yongin said Koshik also can imitate "ajik" (not yet), but the researchers haven't confirmed the accomplishment.

Koshik is particularly good with vowels, with a rate of similarity of 67 percent, the researchers said. For consonants he scores only 21 percent.

Researchers said the clearest scientific evidence that Koshik is deliberately imitating human speech is that the sound frequency of his words matches that of his trainers.

Vocal imitation of other species has been found in mockingbirds, parrots and mynahs. But the paper says Koshik's case represents "a wholly novel method of vocal production" because he uses his trunk to reproduce human speech.

In 1983, zoo officials in Kazakhstan reportedly claimed that a teenage elephant named Batyr could reproduce Russian to utter 20 phrases, including "Batyr is good." But there was no scientific study on the claim.

Researchers believe Koshik learned to reproduce words out of a desire to bond with his trainers after he was separated from two other elephants at age 5.

Koshik emerged as a star among animal enthusiasts and children in South Korea after Everland Zoo claimed in 2006 that he could imitate words, two years after his trainers noticed the phenomenon. His growing reputation prompted Austrian biologist Angela Stoeger-Horwath and German biophysicist Daniel Mietchen to study him in 2010, zoo officials said.

Oh Suk-hun, a South Korean veterinarian who co-authored the research paper with Stoeger-Horwath and Mietchen, said the elephant apparently started imitating human speech to win the trust of his trainers.

In April, a children's science book called "Joa Joa, Speaking Elephant" was published. The cover photo showed Koshik opening his mouth wide while raising a trunk over his trainer's head.

Researchers said Koshik was trained to obey several commands and "exposed to human speech intensively" by trainers, veterinarians and zoo visitors.

Shin Nam-sik, a veterinary professor at Seoul National University who has seen Koshik, agreed with researchers' finding that the elephant was able to mimic human speech.

"In Koshik's case, the level of intimacy between him and his trainer was the key factor that made the elephant want to sound like a human," Shin said.

Kim Jong-gab, Koshik's chief trainer, said the elephant was timid for a male when he first came to Everland Zoo, so trainers often slept in the same area with him. Kim thinks that contact helped Koshik feel closer to humans.

Kim said he has another phrase he wants to teach Koshik: "Saranghae," or "I love you."

The hearing is to determine whether Manning should face a court-martial on suspicion of leaking thousands of classified documents, including military reports and diplomatic cables.

Manning's lawyers have sought to have the case against him dismissed, arguing that his treatment after arriving at the Marine Corps brig in Quantico, Virginia, in July 2010 was unduly harsh.

Saturday's proceedings, on the fifth day of the hearing, focused on the events of January 18, 2011, when Manning broke down and began crying after falling while guards were removing his shackles in an exercise room.

Defense attorneys allege that Manning became especially distraught that day because guards were bullying him. Manning himself testified earlier that his guards seemed angry on the morning the incident occurred, making him nervous.

One of Manning's guards at the time, former Marine Corps Lance Corporal Jonathan Cline, acknowledged in his testimony that military personnel at Quantico had been irritated by a pro-Manning protest a day before the incident in the exercise room. The protest had snarled traffic around Quantico.

"They were annoyed by it," Cline said. "It would kind of close down parts of the base and it would kind of hinder them or interrupt the way they would travel to get home or to do other things."

Manning faces up to life in prison if convicted of charges he played a role in the leaking of secrets by WikiLeaks, which stunned governments around the world by publishing intelligence documents and diplomatic cables, mostly in 2010.

Prosecutors have alleged that Manning, without authorization while on intelligence duty, disclosed hundreds of thousands of U.S. diplomatic cables, military reports and video of a military helicopter attack in Iraq in which two Reuters journalists were killed.

WikiLeaks has never confirmed Manning was the source of any documents it released.

Manning's lawyers are working with the court on the language of a proposed plea involving less serious charges. A prison term of at least 16 years is under discussion, one of his attorneys said, but until a plea is formally entered and accepted, the length of any prison term is uncertain.
