(Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Swedish drugmaker Orexo AB's drug to treat opioid addiction, the company said on Thursday, sending its shares up as much as 14.3 percent in Stockholm.

The tablet, Zubsolv, dissolves under the tongue. It combines the drugs buprenorphine and naloxone and will compete with similar products, Subutex and Suboxone, made by Britain's Reckitt-Benckiser Group Plc.

Orexo said its drug offers a benefit to patients over Suboxone because less is required to achieve the same effect. It also has a menthol flavor that it said patients in a study preferred.

Nearly three out of four prescription drug overdoses are caused by painkillers known as opioids that include such drugs as oxycodone, hydrocodone, fentanyl, methadone and codeine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and since 2003 have caused more overdose deaths than cocaine and heroin combined.

In March, the FDA rejected a drug similar to Orexo's from Titan Pharmaceuticals Inc and asked for additional data proving it worked. Titan's drug, Probuphine, is a long-acting version of Suboxone that is implanted under the skin.

To date, the market for buprenorphine has been dominated by Reckitt, a consumer goods company whose products range from cleaning supplies to condoms. Suboxone and Subutex generated sales of roughly $1.3 billion in 2012.

Orexo said opioid dependence affects nearly 5 million people in the United States and that only 20 percent receive treatment. The company said it expects peak sales of the drug to be at least $500 million.

Suboxone and Subutex lost market exclusivity in 2009, and while generic competitors introduced cheap copies of Subutex, they were slow to develop alternatives to Suboxone. In the meantime, Reckitt persuaded many physicians to switch from Suboxone tablets to Suboxone Film, a newer, patent-protected wafer-like strip that patients dissolve under the tongue.

At the end of 2012, according to Reckitt, Suboxone Film had captured 64 percent of the market.

Earlier this year, the FDA approved generic versions of Suboxone tablets from Amneal Pharmaceuticals LLC and Actavis Inc.

The agency also said, in April, that it would not approve any generic versions of the original form of OxyContin, which could be crushed and snorted for a quick high. OxyContin's maker, Purdue Pharma LP, stopped shipping its branded version of the drug in August. It now sells a reformulated version that is less easy to abuse.

Orexo said it expects to launch the drug in the United States around September. It said on Monday it had signed an investment and profit-sharing deal with contract sales organization Publicis Touchpoint Solutions.

Once Publicis has recovered its investment and an agreed upon return, the amount of which was undisclosed, Publicis would receive a single digit share of the profit until the contract ends in December 2016.

Orexo's shares were up 8 kronor, or 12.12 percent, at 74.00 on the Stockholm Stock Exchange. Earlier they rose as high as 75.50.

Net income rose to $5.27 billion from $4.40 billion a year earlier. On a per-share basis, earnings were 98 cents, beating the 93 cents forecast by Wall Street.

Revenue edged up to $21.4 billion from $21.3 billion and exceeded Wall Street expectations.

The bank lowered expenses in the second quarter by $142 million, to $12.3 billion.

"Wells Fargo again demonstrated an ability to grow during a dynamic economic and interest-rate environment," the bank's chairman and CEO, John Stumpf, said in a statement.

The bank's stock price was up 76 cents, or 1.8 percent, at $42.65 before regular trading began Friday.

San Francisco-based Wells Fargo controls nearly a third of the U.S. mortgage market, and that has helped bolster its earnings in recent quarters. It funded $112 billion worth of mortgages, down from $131 billion in the second quarter of 2012. With interest rates on mortgages rising sharply in recent weeks, analysts are concerned about the potential impact on the bank's mortgage business. Much of its recent lending came from refinancing, which has been reduced by the recent spike in rates.

Mortgage rates jumped late last month from near-record lows and added thousands of dollars to the cost of buying a home, after the Federal Reserve signaled that it could slow its bond purchases later this year. The average rate on the 30-year fixed loan rose this week to 4.51 percent, the highest in two years.

In the short run, higher rates appear to be drawing potential home buyers off the sideline. Buyers want to get a mortgage before rates rise further from their historically low levels. In the long run, more expensive home loans might slow the housing market's recovery, which has helped drive the U.S. economy.

At the same time, higher loan rates would allow banks to make more from mortgage lending.

Wells Fargo, the fourth-largest U.S. bank by assets, was little known outside the Western U.S. before scooping up a teetering Wachovia in the depths of the financial crisis in 2008. The bank has turned a profit every quarter since 2009, the year it wrapped up its acquisition of Wachovia.

So far, two people are unable to move their legs doctors don't yet know if the damage is permanent and several others have needed surgery to stabilize their spines so they can move, said Dr. Geoffrey Manley, neurosurgery chief at San Francisco General Hospital who is overseeing their care.

Among the worst injuries are crushed vertebrae that compress the spinal cord, and ligaments so stretched and torn that they can't hold neck and back joints in place, Manley said in an interview Monday.

That 305 of the 307 passengers and crew of the Asiana jet survived the crash is remarkable, and a testimony to improvements in airline safety in recent years. More than 180 people went to hospitals with injuries, but only a small number were critically injured.

Still, Manley said even among those who suffered mild spine trauma, he is struck by a pattern that shows how their upper bodies were flung forward and then backward over the lap belts that kept them in their seats and undoubtedly saved their lives.

The injuries are somewhat reminiscent of the days before shoulder belts in cars, although much more severe, said Dr. David Okonkwo of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, who isn't involved with the survivors' care.

Does that mean shoulder belts in airplanes would prevent such injuries? Okonkwo said that's simplistic considering how much more speed and force are involved in a plane crash. Shoulder belts might just transfer that force to the neck, he cautioned.

"If you put in the shoulder belt, it might just move the injuries up further. Your head weighs a tremendous amount," agreed San Francisco's Manley. He hopes to study the issue, comparing survivors' injuries to where they sat.

The airline industry says adding three-point seatbelts to airplanes would require major changes to seat design that would mean higher airfares and less comfort.

Some business class seats have added a type of shoulder restraint, but those seats are more like beds and often don't face forward.

Meanwhile, Okonkwo said assuming the "crash position" leaning forward with the head as far down as possible and arms over it can limit the spine jolting back and forth and offer some protection. It's not clear if any survivors of Saturday's crash had time to do so.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Delays in approval of more natural gas export projects are costing U.S. companies millions of dollars a day and giving a leg up to rival countries also looking to boost exports, the chief of Exxon Mobil Corpsaid on Thursday.

The comments by Exxon's Rex Tillerson came hours after new U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz told lawmakers he hopes to "expeditiously" begin evaluating the more than a dozen applications awaiting approval to export liquefied natural gas (LNG).

"It's a very competitive marketplace. It's not like people are just going to stand at our door like panting dogs just waiting for us to give this (LNG) to them," Tillerson said while answering questions after an event at the Asia Society focused on Asian energy security.

Tillerson said he left a meeting with Moniz on Wednesday with no clear idea of when the company's Golden Pass LNG project - a $10 billion joint venture with Qatar Petroleum - would be approved.

"I don't want to start on this process if you tell me it's going to take five years for you to get around to my application," Tillerson said.

U.S. companies need authorization from the Department of Energy to export gas to all but a handful of countries with free trade agreements. Japan and India are among the countries keen to gain access to U.S. supplies.

The Energy Department ended a two-year freeze in reviewing liquefied natural gas (LNG) export applications in May, when it approved gas exports to all countries from Freeport LNG's terminal in Texas.

Shortly after that move Moniz, who was sworn in on May 21, said he would undertake a thorough review of the gas export review process, promising to ensure that current data was being used to make these decisions.

At his first appearance at a Congressional panel since his swearing-in, Moniz told lawmakers at a House Energy and Commerce committee hearing on Thursday the review should wrap up soon.

"We're getting ready to begin evaluating the dockets on a case-by-case basis," Moniz said. There would "absolutely" be additional decisions this year, he added, without giving a more specific time frame.

Companies have lined up to export excess gas produced from the nation's shale boom. The gas can fetch higher prices abroad.

Other backers of proposed export projects include Dominion Resources Inc , Sempra Energy , BG Group Plcand Veresen Inc .

Some lawmakers and a group of manufacturers led by Dow Chemical Co , have called on the department to be cautious, arguing that unfettered exports could harm the U.S. economy by raising the price of gas at home.

July 8 (Reuters) - Trinidad and Tobago striker Kenwyne Jones struck a superb 73rd minute equaliser to earn his country a 2-2 draw with El Salvador while Honduras defeated Haiti 2-0 in CONCACAF Gold Cup Group B games on Monday.

The outstanding Rodolfo Zelaya scored twice for El Salvador and almost grabbed a spectacular winner in what was a pulsating, entertaining encounter at New Jersey's Red Bull Arena.

Trinidad and Tobago grabbed the lead in the 11th minute when Keon Daniel burst through the middle of the El Salvador defence and confidently slotted home.

El Salvador, playing at high-tempo and making good use of the flanks, drew level 10 minutes later with a magnificent curling 25-yard free-kick from Zelaya.

Rafael Burgos hit the post for the Salvadorians four minutes before the interval but they went ahead in the 69th minute when Zelaya met a perfect cross from Darwin Ceren with a fine diving header.

The lead lasted just four minutes before striker Jones took a long ball down on his chest, broke goalwards and fired in a powerful left foot shot.

Both sides continued to pile forward and Zelaya almost had a hat-trick and the winner with an acrobatic effort that was tipped over the bar by Trinidad keeper Jan Michael Williams.

In the later group game Haiti, fresh from last month's friendly draw with Italy and narrow 2-1 loss to Spain, paid the price for their lack of sharpness in the final third.

Honduras took the lead in the fourth minute with Mario Martinez breaking from midfield and slipping the ball inside to Rony Martinez who fired home.

Haiti played plenty of positive attacking football but too often their moves broke down near the penalty area or ended with hasty finishing.

One of their best chances came in the 20th minute when Jeff Louis crossed to an unmarked Leonel Saint Preux but the striker leaned back and blasted over the bar.

The Hondurans rode their luck a little in the second half but made sure of the win with 12 minutes remaining when Marvin Chavez finished off a low cross from Bryan Beckeles.

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - Nearly four years after 13 soldiers were shot to death at Fort Hood, jury selection may begin on Tuesday in the murder trial of Major Nidal Hasan, who is accused of the largest massacre on a U.S. military base in history.

Hasan, 42, an American-born Muslim who faces the death penalty if convicted by a military panel, is mounting his own defense at his court martial in Fort Hood, an Army base near Killeen, Texas.

The case has been delayed by unusual turns including arguments over whether Hasan could keep his beard, the firing or attempted firing of two legal teams and the removal of a military judge.

Hasan has said that he opened fire at the base on November 5, 2009 to protect Muslims and the Taliban in Afghanistan from American aggression.

"Hasan seems to want to turn this into a kind of show trial where he doesn't deny committing the crime but argues it was justified," said Aitan Goelman, one of the government prosecutors in the trial of Timothy McVeigh, the Oklahoma City bomber.

The jury, a panel of at least 12 officers, must be chosen from military members who outrank the accused, and must be unanimous when it comes to a decision on guilt or innocence.

If he gets the death penalty, Hasan would go to the military version of Death Row, at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. No man court martialed by the military has been executed since 1961.

He could also be sentenced to life without parole, or be found guilty on lesser charges.

The jury selection from an Army-wide pool is expected to last several weeks.

Hasan, who was shot and paralyzed from the chest down during the attack, faces 13 charges of premeditated murder and 32 charges of attempted premeditated murder.

Hasan has told the court he spends hours reading the Koran in his cell every day. As he was firing the gun in 2009, witnesses say, he yelled out the Arabic words "Allahu Akbar," which translates as "God is great."

The 9-year-old Yuan Yuan delivered the cub Saturday night, following artificial insemination given in March, the zoo announced.

It was the seventh such attempt on Yuan Yuan in three years, they said. Natural pregnancy among pandas is relatively rare.

The zoo showed a picture of Yuan Yuan holding the pink, palm-sized cub.

China sent the pandas to Taiwan in December 2008. The two sides split amid civil war in 1949.

China named the animals Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan, which together means "reunion." Opposition politicians and other Taiwanese skeptics have warned China could use the pandas to advance its unification agenda with self-governed Taiwan.

But the pair has remained the most adored animals at the zoo. Yuan Yuan's anticipated pregnancy has been closely followed by the media.

Zoo official Chao Ming-chieh said China has agreed to allow Taiwan to keep the cub on the island.

Beijing has loaned its giant pandas to many countries but cubs born abroad are to be returned to China.
