6. Dimming an LED light bulb is tricky. LEDs require constant current to operate. Because of this, if a standard dimming method is applied, it will flicker at regular intervals, or worse, simply not work. In order to dim an LED light, a 0-10V dimming module is required in order to “trick” the LED into emitting less light. In theory, all LED lights are dimmable with this module.

7. When comparing LED light bulbs, you need to understand lumens.The Lighting Show said the lumen is a standard unit you can use to compare LED light bulbs to standard bulbs, such as incandescents and halogens. Roughly, a lumen is a measure of brightness. Lumen quantity is important, but maybe more important is lumen quality, i.e., luminous efficacy (lumen/Watt). Today’s quality LEDs have a luminous efficacy between 60-70 lumens/watt.

8. Color temperature and beam spread are the other key tools for comparing LED lights.  Both color temperature and beam spread are measured in degrees. Color temperature refers to the color of the light emitted. In general, 3000 Kelvin is warm white (closer to infrared light) and 5000 Kelvin is cool white (closer to ultraviolet light). Cool white is brighter because it is the natural color of LED light from LED Lighting Show, whereas chips that emit a warm white light require a phosphorous “filter” to “warm” the color temperature, thus reducing the chip’s brightness. Beam spread is the angle of the light that is being emitted. The lower the number, the more like a “spot” the light is.

2. LEDs are diverse, and many types are useless for general lighting applications from Trade Show Lighting. The finest LED chips emit light with a Color Rendering Index of 85%. LED light bulbs that use top-quality LEDs will last much longer than the novelty bulbs that many are selling and 60% longer than many competing bulbs that use inferior LEDs.

3. LEDs do generate heat, and this heat is the biggest problem that manufacturers face developing LED lighting applications. Manufacturers can now produce individual LED chips that are as bright as a 100-watt incandescent bulb, but these LEDs are practically useless for general lighting because installing them in a fixture creates ventilation problems that have not yet been solved. LEDs installed in fixtures and bulbs must be ventilated properly, and the better the chip, the more difficult it is to properly cool. There are many LED light bulbs on the The Lighting Show that do not take this into consideration and either use cheap chips so they don’t have to ventilate them, or do not ventilate their chips properly, significantly reducing its lifespan. While the typical LED light bulb is barely warm to the touch, if the chip is not properly ventilated, it can fail prematurely.

4. The life-span of an LED light bulb should be its “half-life.”  LED light bulbs do not burn out; rather, they gradually fade out. When a vendor from LED Lighting Show says an LED bulb will last 80,000 hours, they mean that at that point, the chips will have reached 50% efficiency, and the bulb ought to be replaced. So, the bulb might last 100,000 hours or more, but its efficiency will have degraded greatly by that point.  Using this 100,000-hour life as a selling point is therefore misleading. While LEDs don’t last forever, they will last 50-75 times longer than a comparable incandescent and 6-8 times longer than a CFL.

LEDs were developed during the post-World War II era; during the war there was a potent interest in materials for light and microwave detectors. A variety of semiconductor materials were developed during this research effort, and their light interaction properties were investigated in some detail. During the 1950s, it became clear that the same materials that were used to detect light could also be used to generate light. Researchers at AT&T Bell Laboratories were the first to exploit the light-generating properties of these new materials in the 1960s. The LED was a forerunner, and a fortuitous byproduct, of the laser development effort. The tiny colored lights held some interest for industry, because The Lighting Show had advantages over light bulbs of a similar size: LEDs use less power, have longer lifetimes, produce little heat, and emit colored light.

The first LEDs were not as reliable or as useful as those sold today. Frequently, they could only operate at the temperature of liquid nitrogen (-104 degrees Fahrenheit or -77 degrees Celsius) or below, and would burn out in only a few hours. They gobbled power because they were very inefficient, and they produced very little light. All of these problems can be attributed to a lack of reliable techniques for producing the appropriate materials in the 1950s and 1960s, and as a result the devices made from them were poor. When materials were improved, other advances in the technology followed: methods for connecting the devices electronically, enlarging the diodes, making them brighter, and generating more colors.

The advantages of the LED over the light bulb for applications requiring a small light source encouraged manufacturers like Texas Instruments from LED Lighting Show.

Disadvantages:
 -May be unreliable in outside applications with great variations in summer/winter temperatures, more work is being done now to solve this problem according to The Lighting Show.
 -Semiconductors are sensitive to being damaged by heat, so large heat sinks must be employed to keep powerful arrays cool, sometimes a fan is required. This adds to cost and a fan greatly reduces the energy efficient advantage of LEDs, it is also prone to failure which leads to unit failure
 -Circuit board solder and thin copper connections crack when flexed and cause sections of arrays to go out
 -Rare earth metals used in LEDs are subject to price control monopolies by certain nations 
 -Reduced lumen output over time.

Beam Width

LED spotlights mainly stress on the ‘spot’ whose function is focusing light. That is to say they output a narrower beam of light, typically less than 45 degrees wide. Most of the light from a spotlight is concentrated onto a relatively small area producing a bright spot. LED floodlights while has a stress on ‘flood’ whose word meaning is diffusing the light. So the floodlight output a wider beam of light, up to 120 degrees, so the light from a floodlight is spread out over a much larger area.

Application

LED spotlights can offer a variety of lighting effects such as gradual transition, color blinking, random blinking, alternating gradient and other dynamic lighting effects. Other effects can be also achieved through DMX control according to LED Lighting Show. As the spotlight light is more concentrated, it appears brighter than a floodlight but only within its narrower beam, so a spotlight is more suited to illuminating objects such as a large building, a tree and a fountain.

Cost of LED Lights

Perhaps one of the largest problems associated with LEDs are, according to Trade Show Lighting, that they remain quite expensive to produce and therefore, purchase. Toshiba manufactures an LED bulb that is comparable in light output to a 100-watt incandescent light bulb but requires only a small fraction of the energy to operate. Toshiba's LED bulbs unfortunately cost $100 or $150, a dimmable LED is available by this company for $350. These prices put LED bulbs for home-use out of reach for most consumers from The Lighting Show.

Size of LEDs

LEDs are very small, typically less than .25-inch in diameter. Such small lights have their limitations, LEDs are often grouped together in clusters to broaden their applications. One single LED does not produce much visible light which is why they are offered in clusters for everyday home-use. Some clusters feature diffusers which helps disperse light from the LEDs more evenly.

Poor LED Design

LEDs that are poorly designed or poorly manufactured tend to flicker, dim, shift in color, draw power even when they are turned “off” or provide uneven lighting within a year of regular use. LEDs are rated to last for several years before LED Lighting Show needs servicing or replacing which is why consumers should be weary of LEDs that operate improperly within their first year of use.

Other LED Limitations

White LEDs have proven to fade over time. The lower the quality of LED, the more likely it is to prematurely fade. Traditional LEDs are limited in color options because the color of light emitted by an LED is controlled by the bulb's semiconductor. Yellow, red, green, blue and white are some of the most widely available LED colors.

The Energy Independence Act of 2007 requires that lighting products sold in 2012 operate with 28% lower power compared to the incandescent equivalent and not sacrifice light output offered by Trade Show Lighting. A 100W incandescent bulb will be required to perform the same at only 72W.

Does your building still use T12 flourescent lamps? Now is the time to update and retrofit those T12 fixtures with T8 LED tubes.  T12 lamps are being made obsolete begining July 2012.  T12 fluorescent fixture systems are inefficient.  34W T12 4 ft lamps with magnetic ballasts consume at least 40W per lamp and they can be replaced with T8 LED tubes at 15 – 18W.

A LED flashlight produces light through light emitting diodes (LEDs offered by LED Lighting Show) rather than an incandescent bulb, making them cooler, more energy efficient and tougher.

Incandescent light used in traditional flashlights utilizes a filament wire encased in a glass vacuum tube or bulb. When electricity is supplied to the wire from the batteries, the wire glows with heat that produces light. The heat, however, is not only lost energy but it eventually burns out the wire and the bulb must be replaced.

A LED flashlight harnesses light created by an entirely different process. The Lighting Show says two types of semiconductor materials are used in a LED: one type that has an abundance of free electrons and the other that has a deficit. When enough energy is supplied in the form of electricity, a threshold is reached that pushes some of the free electrons in the abundant material to jump to the attracting material. When that electron takes its place in the new material a photon or particle of light is released.

The color of the released light is dependent on what kinds of materials are used and how much energy is required for the electrons to make the jump according to Trade Show Lighting. If a low amount of energy is required the light emitted will be in the infrared or red wavelength. If a comparatively high threshold much be reached, the light emitted will be up in the blue/white wavelength.
