When he's not always cooking his own meals, Hopkins shifts interests toward tasteful decor. He keeps his eyes peeled and behind Prada glasses for the latest trends in interior decorating so he can spruce up his Philadelphia condo or other properties.

"I've sort of got an eye for nice things," he said.

And that's a good thing. Because Hopkins can land another accessory that he can't buy at Whole Foods or charge at a swanky retail store. At 48, Hopkins is not only still fighting, he's trying to break his own record as the oldest boxer to win a major championship. His longevity is legendary in a sport that can chew up and knock out the best long before 40, or, at worst, leave an aging prize fighter a battered shell of his prime.

His 63rd career pro bout ahead, Hopkins has no interest in growing into another sad statistic. He vows he'll leave the sport the same way he's spent his career on his feet and on top.

At some point, Hopkins will retire. He has to, right? He'll get beat bad and go out with critics howling he hung on too long or win a belt and quit as an I-told-you-so champion.

Either way, Hopkins will eventually decide it's time to hang up the gloves. Hopkins will not fight until he's collecting Social Security.

Then again, Hopkins heard the calls to retire at 40. And at 45. The years go on.

Yet, here he is, still eschewing booze, desserts and any desire to retire on anyone's terms but his own. Hopkins will try to prove he's still championship material when he fights undefeated Tavoris Cloud (24-0, 19 KOs) for a piece of the 175-pound light heavyweight title Saturday night at Barclays Center in New York. Hopkins dethroned George Foreman as the oldest boxer to win a world title when he beat Jean Pascal in 2011. Foreman was 45 years, 10 months when he knocked out heavyweight champion Michael Moorer in 1994. Hopkins was 46 years, 4 months and 6 days in his bout with Pascal.

Hopkins hasn't fought since he dropped the WBC light heavyweight title in a majority decision to Chad Dawson in April 2012. One more loss, and Hopkins could find title fights and premium cable network bouts dry up as a new generation of fighters like fellow Philadelphian Danny Garcia take charge.

"I know my performance is going to make some people happy," Hopkins said, "and it's going to make some people wish I'd get out of the way."

Hopkins has never been about glitz and knockout power, but of crafting a disciplined career straight from the pages of March Madness. Survive and advance. Never a stylistically crowd-pleasing fighter, Hopkins hasn't knocked out an opponent since Oscar De La Hoya in September 2004 14 fights ago.

His bouts have been decided by decision since, except for a draw in the first Jean Pascal fight in 2010 and an ugly no-contest in the first Dawson fight.

So why keep fighting? Why not retire? Hopkins will answer some form of that question more times in a news conference than all his fights over a decade.

He has no shortage of answers for why he's facing Cloud, from money ("I'm just getting what was there years ago, but they gave to James Toney and Roy Jones.") to finishing off faded promoter Don King's dwindling stable ("I've made a career off his guys.") to proving he's still the ferocious competitor of a decade ago when he successfully defended his middleweight title a whopping 20 straight times ("It takes away from my legacy when I don't win.").

Hopkins was convicted at age 17 of robbery and assault, and spent nearly five years in prison. That time behind bars in the 1980s gave him more reason to want to exercise his freedoms like the right to decide his immediate future whenever he pleases. Oddly, one more championship belt around his waist is mostly an afterthought.

"I've got 11 belts at home in the trophy case I can look at if I need to look at belts," he said. "It's a trophy. It represents something. But right now, I'm not bigger than boxing, but I'm bigger than belts."

Hopkins has never been stopped, but Cloud could be the fighter who earns that awaited KO against the man better known in the ring as B-Hop.

Nazim Richardson, Hopkins' long-time trainer, favorably compared Cloud's punching power to Antonio Tarver and Felix Trinidad. Hopkins, naturally, beat both of those fighters. Richardson said the only time he ever advised Hopkins to retire was after the Tarver win in 2006, not because of fading skills, but to build on the legacy his star fighter talks so often about preserving.

"I thought if he left then, anybody who left on sports on top, it'd be called, 'The B-Hop,'" Richardson said. "I thought, 'The B-Hop' would be called leaving on top of the sport."

Hopkins is opening his wallet to keep former heavyweight champion Joe Frazier's name on top of the Philly sports scene. Hopkins has pledged to pay the balance on a fundraising effort to place a statue of Frazier at Xfinity Live, an entertainment complex near Philadelphia's three sports stadiums.

Lawyer Richard Hayden, who represents Xfinity Live, has been scouting locations on the site and said the $150,000 needed for the statue, plus a maintenance fund, is close to completion.

"He very generously offered to be the last money in," Hayden said.

Frazier defeated Muhammad Ali in "The Fight of the Century" 42 years ago Friday at Madison Square Garden. Fitting then, that Hopkins is fighting in New York for the first time since be beat Trinidad two weeks after the Sept. 11 attacks. He just finished a run through Central Park training for the Sept. 15 bout at the Garden when the second plane hit the World Trade Center.

He tried to leave the city but wasn't able to because of travel restrictions. Instead, he trained in the Bronx. He would go on to defeat Trinidad in a unification bout to become the undisputed champion a proud moment he said he never really got to truly enjoy because of all the horror and sadness leading to the fight.

"That was a huge night," he said. "In a good way and a bad way I'm part of history."

He looks to make history again in New York, this time as the ageless wonder and the oldest champ.

The Harvard University researchers stressed it was too early to say the men have been cured, but said it was an encouraging sign that the virus hasn't rebounded in their blood months after drug treatment ended.

The first person reported to be cured of HIV, American Timothy Ray Brown, underwent a stem cell transplant in 2007 to treat his leukemia. He was reported by his German doctors to have been cured of HIV two years later.

Brown's doctors used a donor who had a rare genetic mutation that provides resistance against HIV. So far, no one has observed similar results using ordinary donor cells such as those given to the two patients by the Harvard University researchers.

The researchers, Timothy Henrich and Daniel Kuritzkes of the Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, announced last year that blood samples taken from the men who both had blood cancers showed no traces of the HIV virus eight months after they received bone marrow transplants to replace cancerous blood cells with healthy donor cells. The men were still on anti-HIV drugs at the time.

The men have both since stopped anti-retroviral therapy one 15 weeks ago and the other seven weeks ago and show no signs of the virus, Henrich told an international AIDS conference in Malaysia on Wednesday.

"They are doing very well," Henrich said. "While these results are exciting, they do not yet indicate that the men have been cured. Only time will tell."

The HIV virus may be hiding in other organs such as the liver, spleen or brain and could return months later, he warned.

Further testing of the men's cells, plasma and tissue for at least a year will help give a clearer picture on the full impact of the transplant on HIV persistence, he said.

Kuritzkes said the patients will be put back on the drugs if there is a viral rebound.

A rebound will show that other sites are important reservoirs of infectious virus and new approaches to measuring these reservoirs will be needed in developing a cure, Henrich said.

"These findings clearly provide important new information that might well alter the current thinking about HIV and gene therapy," Kevin Robert Frost, chief executive of The Foundation of AIDS Research, said in a statement. "While stem cell transplantation is not a viable option for people with HIV on a broad scale because of its costs and complexity, these new cases could lead us to new approaches to treating, and ultimately even eradicating, HIV."

His baseball-crazy home country, from Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to school kids, erupted in joy over the feat with his father Nobuyuki urging him to go for more.

Yankees outfielder Suzuki performed the feat Wednesday by slicing one of Toronto pitcher R.A. Dickey's knuckleballs past diving third baseman Brett Lawrie and into left field in his first at-bat of the Major League Baseball contest.

The 39-year-old Suzuki, who has played professionally in both Japan and North America, finished the game one-for-four.

Suzuki's teammate Alfonso Soriano hit a tiebreaking two-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning as the Yankees handed the hapless Blue Jays their 12th consecutive loss in New York.

As soon as Suzuki stopped at first base, the New York players came out of the dugout to celebrate with him. The crowd stood and cheered and Suzuki acknowledged their applause with a modest bow.

"It was supposed to be a number that was special to me, but what happened tonight, I wasn't expecting," said Suzuki.

"When my teammates came out to first base, that was very special. The fans, I wasn't expecting so much joy and happiness from them. That's what made it very special tonight; not just the number, but all the things that came with it were very special."

The 10-time all-star joins some elite company, with Pete Rose (4,256) and Hall of Famer Ty Cobb (4,189) the only two players to reach that elusive mark. Cobb and Rose achieved their marks while playing their entire careers in American baseball.

Suzuki has now compiled 2,722 hits during his 13 seasons in America. He racked up his first 1,278 hits while playing nine years with the Orix Blue Wave in his native Japan from 1992-2000.

In Tokyo, major newspapers handed out extra editions mid-morning Thursday to mark the occasion.

"It's an astonishing figure," a smiling Prime Minister Abe told reporters at his executive mansion. "He has set a new, great standard for the world of baseball."

Ichiro's father, 70, who heads the player's management office, said: "I was moved to tears the moment he made the hit. I felt a lump in my throat."

"It's the 4,000th hit alright. But there is always someone better," the senior Suzuki told dozens of journalists in his family's hometown of Toyoyama near Nagoya, central Japan.

"I want him to work harder still to reach the top in the number of hits."

A dozen local school boys, wearing baseball uniforms, gathered at Toyoyama's town office to watch the Yankees-Blue Jays game live on a giant-screen TV.

Yukito Nagano, 12, told reporters: "It was a clean hit to the opposite field and was awesome."

"I want to become a player who can do the 'laser beam' throw like Ichiro," he added, referring to Suzuki's lightning ball-throwing skill.

Suzuki signed with the Seattle Mariners and recorded 242 hits in his US debut en route to winning both the American League Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player Awards.

That began a streak of 10 straight seasons in which he collected 200-plus hits. That also included an American baseball record 262 in 2004, breaking the single-season mark held by George Sisler since 1920.

In July 2012, Suzuki moved from Seattle to the Yankees.

Among Suzuki's 2,722 hits in America, 2,228 have been singles. He has blasted 110 home runs over his career.

HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania (Reuters) - The former football coach whose account of Jerry Sandusky molesting a boy in a Penn State shower is at the heart of a cover-up case against former school officials testified at their court hearing on Monday.

Mike McQueary told of a series of talks he had with late Penn State coach Joe Paterno in February 2001, including the morning after he spotted Sandusky sexually abusing a child in the locker room showers.

"I had seen Jerry Sandusky engaged in a very bad sexual act, a molestation act, with a minor," McQueary testified he told Paterno. He also testified that he told other university officials about the incident - including two of the three officials appearing at Monday's hearing. None reported it to police.

Sandusky, 69, a former assistant football coach, was convicted in June 2012 of 45 counts of sexual abuse involving 10 boys. He is serving a sentence of 30 years to 60 years in a state prison.

McQueary lost his job as a receivers coach after charges were filed against Sandusky in November 2011. His testimony opened a preliminary hearing in the criminal case against the college's former president, Graham Spanier, 65; its former athletic director, Tim Curley, 59; and its former senior vice president Gary Schultz, 63.

The three university officials are accused of a "conspiracy of silence" for failing to report the shower incident to authorities, which permitted Sandusky to continue preying on boys, most of whom he met through a charity he founded for at-risk youth.

McQueary, who testified he also told Curley and Schultz of the shower incident, said Paterno told him in the months following the shower incident "Old Main screwed up," using a nickname for the administrative center of Penn State.

Sandusky was arrested in November 2011 and charged with molesting boys. A year later, in November 2012, a grand jury charged Spanier, Curley and Schultz with endangering the welfare of children, criminal conspiracy and obstruction of justice. Spanier also was charged with perjury.

Curley and Schultz were previously charged in November 2011 with perjury and failure to report suspected abuse.

Spanier was fired from Penn State; Curley was placed on administrative leave and Schultz had already retired from the school.

Harrisburg District Judge William Wenner will decide if there is enough evidence to bring the case to trial after the preliminary hearing.

Within weeks of Sandusky's arrest, Penn State Trustees fired Spanier, at the time the nation's highest-paid public university president. Trustees also fired Paterno, Sandusky's boss. Months later, Paterno, a legendary figure in college football died of lung cancer at the age of 85.

Civil lawsuits filed by the victims, now grown men, against the university are close to being settled, with the school putting aside $60 million to cover the claims, according to a lawyer for one of the plaintiffs. The attorney said there were as many as 32 claims from alleged victims.

McQueary also has filed a whistleblower and defamation lawsuit against Penn State, accusing the school of not renewing his contract because he cooperated with authorities investigating Sandusky and the Penn State officials.

And, Spanier's lawyers have served legal notice that they intend to file defamation charges against Louis Freeh, a former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Freeh was the author of a study, commissioned by the university, spelling out a narrative of the scandal that many in the state rejected, including the Paterno family.

The Freeh report prompted the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the governing body for college sports, to issue sanctions against Penn State. The NCAA imposed a $60 million fine and voided the 14 seasons of football victories Sandusky coached.

(Reuters) - Outdoor enthusiasts spending less on camping and golfing gear due to a sluggish economy and a wetter season hit Dick's Sporting Goods Inc'sresults, leading the company to slash its earnings forecast for the year.

Shares of the company, which also sells sports footwear and apparel, fell 6 percent to $47.48 by midday.

Consumers have tightened spending amid higher payroll taxes and gasoline prices and a slowing job market. A host of retailers from Macy's Incto Wal-Mart Stores Inchave reported tepid sales for the latest quarter.

"It's been pretty well chronicled the consumer seems to be a bit sluggish and may have other priorities right now in the short term of where they want to spend their money," Dick's Chief Executive Edward Stack said on a conference call.

Morningstar analyst Paul Swinand said people have been spending on cars and home improvement, while cutting back on discretionary items.

Stack said wet and cool conditions in the most recent quarter also discouraged outdoor activity such as water sports, camping, biking and golf, hurting sales in those businesses.

Dick's now expects full-year earnings of $2.60 to $2.65 per share, well below its prior estimate of $2.84 to $2.86 per share.

The forecast missed the average analyst estimate of $2.83 per share. The company said it expects sales to continue to be weak in the second-half of the year.

Dick's will increase advertising to help pull in customers, CEO Stack said.

The company's net income in the quarter ended August 3 rose to $84.2 million, or 67 cents per share, from $53.7 million, or 43 cents per share, a year earlier.

Excluding items, the company earned 71 cents per share. Net sales rose 6.6 percent to $1.53 billion.

Both numbers were below the average analyst estimate of a profit of 74 cents per share on revenue of $1.57 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Adjusted for an extra week in 2012, the company's same-store sales fell 0.4 percent, missing its forecast of a 2 to 3 percent rise.

Same-store sales at Dick's Sporting Goods stores rose 0.1 percent while those at Golf Galaxy shops fell 6.1 percent. As of August 3, the Company operated 527 Dick'S Sporting Goods stores and 81 Golf Galaxy stores.

"Elmore passed away this morning at 7:15 a.m. at home surrounded by his loving family," according to an announcement on his website, elmoreleonard.com. It did not provide other details.

Leonard, who first wrote Westerns when he gave up his advertising agency job in the 1950s before moving on to crime and suspense books, suffered a stroke on July 29.

Known by the nickname Dutch, Leonard had his commercial breakthrough in 1985 with the publication of "Glitz."

His following books, including "Get Shorty," "Out of Sight," "Killshot," "Bandits" and "Freaky Deaky," came out every year-and-a-half or so and were best-sellers.

Leonard's 47th book, "Blue Dreams," was expected to be published this year.

"I don't have any reason to quit," Leonard told Reuters in 2012, referring to his career. "I still enjoy writing."

Hollywood had an affinity for Leonard's books, and more than 25 of his works were made into movies or television shows, beginning with Paul Newman in the 1967 film "Hombre." The Western story "3:10 to Yuma" and the novel "The Big Bounce" were each adapted for film twice.

Movie producers and stars were so anxious to secure rights to his books that they were known to show up on Leonard's doorstep on the publication date.

But audiences and even the author himself were often unhappy with the cinematic adaptations.

Leonard, who spent much of his life in Detroit and its suburbs, said many filmmakers made the mistake of pushing the plots of what were character-driven stories, such as "Get Shorty," which is about a likeable loanshark named Chili Palmer.

"My characters are what the books are about. The plot just kind of comes along," Leonard told London's Guardian in a 2004 interview. "Movies always want to concentrate on the action."

His favorite movie adaptation of one of his novels was director-writer Quentin Tarantino's reworking of "Rum Punch" into the film "Jackie Brown."

The cable television series "Justified," the tale of a U.S. marshal in Kentucky that first aired in 2010, was based on Leonard's work and he served as executive producer of the show.

'DICKENS OF DETROIT'

Born in New Orleans, Leonard moved at age 8 with his family to Detroit, where he became enthralled by the real-life exploits of gangsters Bonnie and Clyde and the fortunes of the city's professional baseball team, the Detroit Tigers.

Reading Erich Maria Remarque's World One tale "All Quiet on the Western Front" as a boy made him want to become a writer.

After a stint in the Navy building bases in the South Pacific during World War Two, Leonard enrolled at the University of Detroit, entering writing contests and selling stories to magazines that featured tales of the Old West.

He would rise before dawn, denying himself a cup of coffee until he had written a page, and then head off to write copy at a Detroit advertising agency.

Leonard switched to crime fiction when the popularity of Westerns faded. His tough characters spoke in a clipped, twisted syntax that led Newsweek magazine in a 1984 cover story to call him "the Dickens of Detroit" - a label he scorned.

Leonard explained his approach in a New York Times essay in which he listed his rules for writing, including, "Try to leave out the part that readers tend to skip.

He summed up his technique by saying, "If it sounds like writing, I rewrite it."

Leonard, who overcame a drinking problem in 1977, wrote daily in long-hand on unlined pads in his living room, employing a researcher to enrich his material.

He won the National Book Foundation's Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters in November 2012, putting him in the company of such U.S. literary luminaries as Toni Morrison, John Updike, Gore Vidal and Norman Mailer.

Leonard was married three times and had five children with his first wife. His son Peter also went into advertising before becoming a writer.

The project, a partnership with the EarthCam webcam network, was to go live Monday at midnight, the museum said.

Warhol museum director Eric Shiner said the project is titled "Figment" because of a Warhol quote in which the artist said, "I always thought I'd like my own tombstone to be blank. No epitaph and no name. Well, actually, I'd like it to say, 'Figment.'"

The suburban Pittsburgh gravestone has Warhol's original surname, Warhola, the dates of his birth and death and a cross. Warhol's 85th birthday would have been Tuesday.

Shiner said the museum, which is based in Pittsburgh, Warhol's hometown, decided that the gravesite webcam "would be a really fantastic way to put Andy on the air 24/7 and plug in to our global audience."

"We believe that this will give Warhol the pleasure of knowing that he is still plugged in and turned on over 25 years after his death," Shiner said.

Warhol, who died in 1987, was a devout Catholic who went to church every day to pray, Shiner said, and he's buried near his parents at the St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Cemetery in the Pittsburgh suburbs.

The Warhol gravesite also is documented in artist Madelyn Roehrig's ongoing art project "Figments: Conversations with Andy." Roehrig videotapes people who visit the grave and photographs the many objects adoring fans leave there.

Hundreds of people visit Warhol's grave every year, often leaving pop culture items featured in his artworks, such as Campbell's Soup cans and Coca-Cola bottles.

EarthCam said it also will have a live webcam from the church where Warhol was baptized and people will be able to send flowers and watch as they are delivered to the grave.

The Brotherhood's spiritual guide, Mohammed Badie, was arrested in an apartment in the Cairo district of Nasr City, close to the site of a sit-in encampment that was forcibly cleared by security forces last week, triggering violence that killed hundreds of people.

Badie's arrest is the latest move in an escalating crackdown by authorities on the Brotherhood, which has seen hundreds of its members taken into custody.

The Muslim Brotherhood said Badie's detention would not weaken the movement or lead its followers away from their principles.

"The people will continue their peaceful struggle until they regain all their rights with his eminence, the guide (leader) in jail," it said.

The group's near-daily protests since Morsi's ouster have diminished in recent days, with scattered demonstrations in Cairo and elsewhere attracting mere hundreds, or even dozens, of protesters. On Tuesday, several hundred Morsi supporters staged protests in Helwan, an industrial suburb north of Cairo, and in Ein Shams, a residential district on the opposite end of the city, shortly before the 11-hour curfew went into effect at 7 p.m.

Morsi has been detained in an undisclosed location since the July 3 coup that ousted him, following protests by millions of Egyptians against his rule. He is facing accusations of conspiring with the militant Palestinian Hamas group to escape from prison during the 2011 uprising and complicity in the killing and torture of protesters outside his Cairo palace in December.

Badie's last public appearance was at the Nasr City protest encampment last month, where he delivered a fiery speech from a makeshift stage in which he denounced the military's removal of Morsi. His arrest followed the killing of his son Ammar, who was shot dead during violent clashes between security forces and Morsi supporters in Cairo on Friday.

Badie and his powerful deputy, Khairat el-Shater, are to stand trial later this month on charges of complicity in the killing in June of eight protesters outside the Brotherhood's national headquarters in Cairo.

Badie was taken to Tora prison in a suburb south of Cairo, where a team of prosecutors was questioning him, security officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Tora is the same sprawling complex where ex-president Hosni Mubarak, ousted in the 2011 popular uprising, is being held, along with his two sons. Several Mubarak-era figures are also imprisoned there, as are several Brotherhood leaders and other Islamists.

After his arrest, the private ONTV network showed footage of a somber-looking Badie sitting motionless on a black sofa as a man in civilian clothes and carrying an assault rifle stood nearby.

Meanwhile, the Brotherhood released the text of Badie's weekly message to the group's followers. Quoting heavily from the Quran, he warned that anyone who supports the current "oppression, suppression and bloodshed" including Arab and foreign governments will soon regret their stand.

He also called on the international community to "take a strong stand on the side of righteousness, freedom for all peoples of the world, since the age of military coups has gone and you have stood against them everywhere in honor of the values of freedom, justice and human rights."

In the aftermath of last Wednesday's violent crackdown on the sit-in camps, the military-backed government is considering outlawing the Brotherhood, which has spent most of the 85 years since its creation as an illegal organization. The government has asked the judiciary for advice on how to go about a ban. It has also come under growing pressure from pro-government media and a wide array of secular politicians to declare the Brotherhood a terrorist organization.

Brotherhood spokesman Ahmed Aref sought to downplay the significance of Badie's arrest, writing on his Facebook page Tuesday: "Mohammed Badie is one member of the Brotherhood."

Badie's arrest came a day after suspected Islamic militants ambushed two minibuses and killed 25 off-duty policemen in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.

The daylight attack raised fears that the strategic desert region bordering Israel and the Gaza Strip could be plunged into a full-fledged insurgency.

The Sinai Peninsula has long been wracked by violence by al-Qaida-linked fighters, some who consider Morsi's Brotherhood too moderate, and tribesmen who have used the area for smuggling and other criminal activity. Attacks, especially those targeting security forces, have been on the rise since Morsi's ouster.

Monday's attack took place near the border town of Rafah in northern Sinai. A few hours later, militants shot to death a senior police officer as he stood guard outside a bank in el-Arish, another city in the largely lawless area, security officials said. Nobody claimed responsibility for either attack.

Meanwhile, a little-known law professor, Sayed Ateeq, filed a case against Mohamed ElBaradei, accusing the Nobel Peace Prize laureate of committing "high treason" and damaging the country's world image by quitting his job as interim vice president last week. Egyptian law allows citizens to file cases like that, although many are swiftly thrown out by judges.

ElBaradei quit to protest the use of force by security forces in clearing the Morsi supporters' sit-in camps, warning the violence will only breed more violence and play into the hands of extremists. He has since been the target of a media and political campaign accusing him of abandoning the country at a time when his services were most needed. Some questioned his credentials as a politician who could withstand the pressures of politics.

Elsewhere, soldiers killed an Egyptian journalist working for the country's state-run flagship daily Al-Ahram newspaper at a military checkpoint, security officials said Tuesday. Tamer Abdel-Raouf's death brings to five the number of journalists who have died in the past week of violence in Egypt.

The military initially said that Abdel-Raouf sped through a checkpoint Monday evening after a nighttime curfew began, and that soldiers fired warning shots before shooting at the car. It said the military did not deliberately shoot to kill.

However, Shaimaa Abu Elkhir of the Committee to Protect Journalists quoted a witness who was in the car with Abdel-Raouf as saying there were no warning shots and the incident took place an hour before the 7 p.m. start of the military-imposed curfew on Monday.

Hamed al-Barbari of Al-Gomhuria newspaper told the media watchdog group that they were turned back by soldiers at the checkpoint and told they could not pass. The soldiers then fired at the car as they were making a U-turn, al-Barbari said. Abdel-Raouf was shot in the head and the car then hit a light post. Al-Barbari was injured in the collision, according to CPJ.

The two journalists had just finished a meeting with the recently appointed governor of Beheira province, northwest of Cairo.
