Former captain Kumar Sangakkara was the only batsmen to offer any sustained resistance, scoring 68 from 87 deliveries with eight boundaries before he was the eighth man out.

Left-arm pace bowler Mitchell McClenaghan, who impressed in the 2-1 one-day series victory over England before the start of the tournament, took four for 43 off 8.5 overs.

New Zealand made a perfect start after losing the toss.

Captain Brendon McCullum leaped high to his left at second slip to take a two-handed catch when the first ball of the match from Kyle Mills caught the outside edge of Kusal Perera's bat.

McClenaghan clean bowled Tillakaratne Dilshan for 20 then Daniel Vettori captured a wicket in his first over in 50 overs cricket since the 2011 World Cup.

The 34-year-old left-arm spinner, who has been troubled by injuries, got his third delivery to Mahela Jayawardene to grip, turn and bounce over the off-stump. The next ball was slower and straighter, deceiving the batsman who was struck on the back pad and dismissed lbw for four.

McCullum continued to set attacking fields, denying the Sri Lankans the opportunity to take quick singles and rotating his bowlers constantly.

McClenaghan bowled Angelo Mathews for nine, knocking the leg stump over after the Sri Lanka captain had moved across his crease.

Lahiru Thirimanne received a life when wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi failed to gather a thick edge off Kane Williamson's off-spin but was then run out for nine after a horrible mixup with Sangakkara.

Thisara Perera survived a caught-and-bowled chance to Tim Southee and an lbw decision against off-spinner Nathan McCullum which was overturned when the television review showed the left-hander had got a thick inside edge on to his pad.

He did not linger much longer, lofting McClenaghan to Vettori at mid-off, while Sangakkara sliced Nathan McCullum to Williamson at short third man.

The Oilers have missed the playoffs seven straight years. They were 19-22-7 in the lockout-shortened season.

General manager Craig MacTavish, who addressed the media at a late-afternoon news conference, said he spent a week in discussions with Krueger about bringing on a veteran assistant coach.

"During the process of me conducting those interviews, I recognized I was trying to add a coach that was more closely aligned with the way I wanted to run the team than I was in supporting Ralph and the head coach of our team at the time," MacTavish said.

MacTavish, who took over as general manager this spring, said the team is "very close" to hiring a new coach. A deal hasn't been completed, and MacTavish wouldn't reveal the name of the candidate.

Krueger spent one season as head coach after serving as an associate coach for two seasons. The Oilers dismissed Tom Renney in 2012 after two seasons on the job.

Edmonton finished fifth in the Northwest Division in both years with Renney behind the bench.

The Oilers, who are loaded with top young players like Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Nail Yakupov, will now have their third coach in three seasons.

Some of the potential options include former NHL head coaches Lindy Ruff, Alain Vigneault, and John Tortorella, and Dallas Eakins of the AHL's Toronto Marlies.

The 53-year-old Krueger was the head coach of the Swiss national team from 1997-2010. He led the team to 12 world championship appearances and three Winter Olympics. He also coached VEU Feldkirch in Austria's first division.

MacTavish admitted the decision to remove Krueger would be disruptive to the Oilers, but added that his other concerns trumped any issues about continuity.

"Philosophically, I differ somewhat with Ralph, and it doesn't mean my strategy is right or Ralph's strategy is right," MacTavish said. "But I'm the general manager, and it's my job and my decision to make. That's why I've made that decision."

MacTavish said he still wants to add a new assistant coach. The GM said he will also have more "difficult decisions" to make, and that the team is headed toward a "tumultuous" summer.

"I don't think this was in any way fair to Ralph," MacTavish said. "This wasn't about being fair to Ralph. I mean, it was a consideration in this. You always want to be as fair with your personnel and your staff as possible.

"Ralph was unquestionably 100 percent committed to the Edmonton Oilers. His passion and energy is amazing and we wish him nothing but the best as he moves forward in his impressive career."

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Actor Leonardo DiCaprio and Christie's auction house raised $38.8 million through a charity art auction and donations, Christie's said on Tuesday, with proceeds to benefit environmental and conservation causes.

The 33 works in The 11th Hour Auction organized by the star of the new film "The Great Gatsby" sold for $31.74 million on Monday evening and set 13 records for artists including Carol Bove, Joe Bradley, Mark Grotjahn, Raymond Pettibon and Mark Ryden among others.

A $5 million matching donation for three of the lots and additional gifts from donors brought the overall total to $38.8 million for The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, according to Christie's.

"All I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you," DiCaprio told the audience at the end of the auction.

Many of the works, which were created for and donated to the auction by the artists, sold in spirited bidding in a packed auction house. Art collectors from around the globe also placed bids by telephone.

"Christie's is thrilled with the exceptional results of the sale, which realized $38.8 million," said Loic Gouzer, international specialist at Christie's and the head of the sale.

"The works of art were of incredible quality and range, and highlight the generosity of the many artists who donated," he added.

A panel of environmental experts and the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation will decide which conservation projects will benefit from the proceeds of the sale.

At the opening of the auction, DiCaprio, who has supported environmental issues through his foundation since 1988 and also produced and narrated the 2007 documentary "The 11th Hour" about the state of the environment, urged the audience to dig deep into their pockets.

"Bid as if the fate of the planet depended on us," he said.

And they did. All of the 33 works were sold and many fetched prices that were three or four times their pre-sale estimates.

The top lot of the sale was an oil on cardboard mounted on canvas by Mark Grotjahn called "Untitled (Standard Lotus No. II, Bird of Paradise, Tiger Mouth Face 44.01)," which sold for $6.2 million as two determined bidders pushed up the price.

Zeng Fanzhi's "The Tiger," an oil on canvas, fetched nearly double its high estimate with a price of $4.8 million, and Bharti Kher's sculpture "The Skin Speaks a Language Not Its Own" went for $1.7 million.

Each of the three works had a pre-sale estimate of $1.5 million to $2.5 million.

DiCaprio donated "Ocean V" by Andreas Gursky, which sold for $600,000, and he bought an acrylic on canvas by Takashi Murakami for $700,000.

A portrait of DiCaprio painted by Elizabeth Peyton sold for $1 million.

Gouzer and DiCaprio had approached the artists and explained what they had hoped to accomplish with the auction, which they have been planning for a year.

"We explained that we wanted great works and they were very reactive because of the cause. The artists are very sensitive to the fact that we are destroying our planet," Gouzer said in an interview ahead of the sale.

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A man was murdered in Russia because he was gay, investigators said on Monday, the second such killing in less than a month, and activists fear homophobic violence is being fuelled by President Vladimir Putin's conservative agenda.

Three men in a village on the Kamchatka peninsula on Russia's eastern coast stabbed and trampled the victim to death last week, the country's Investigative Committee said.

The suspects, who are under arrest, put the 39-year-old's body in his car and set in on fire, it said in a statement. Interfax news agency reported the victim was a senior administrator at an airport.

It is unusual for Russian authorities to link crimes with homophobia. Last month investigators in the southern city of Volgograd said a 23-year-old man was tortured and killed after revealing he was gay during a drinking session.

Activists said that killing was an example of rising violence against homosexuals, which they fear is being fuelled by a bill backed by Putin's allies in parliament that would ban spreading homosexual "propaganda" among minors.

"Now the deputy director of an airport has been killed in Kamchatka. Because he was gay. And it's going to get worse," Nikolai Alexeyev, Russia's most prominent gay rights activist, said on Twitter.

Critics say the bill would effectively ban gay rights rallies and events. Alexeyev has said it is part of a "homophobic policy" that is giving Russians carte blanche to attack gays.

Homosexuality was decriminalised after the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union, but a poll by the independent Levada Center last month found 38 percent of Russians believe gay people need treatment and 13 percent said they should face prosecution.

Putin has championed socially conservative values and the moral authority of the Russian Orthodox Church during his new term which began in May last year, after a series of large street protests by mostly liberal Russians in big cities.

Putin has said Russia does not discriminate against gay people but has criticized them for failing to increase the population.

Russia plans to amend legislation to ensure foreign same-sex couples do not adopt Russian children, after Putin said last month that a French law allowing same-sex marriage went against traditional Russian values.

Bieber had until Friday to hand in the necessary paperwork which included health and species protection certificates after "Mally" his capuchin monkey was confiscated at Munich airport in March while the singer was on tour.

But Judith Brettmeister, spokeswoman for the shelter which has cared for Mally since then, said the 19-year-old Canadian singer had not been in touch or handed over any documents and would no longer be able to reclaim the animal.

"The monkey belongs to Germany now," she said, adding that Germany's Federal Office for Nature Conservation would now take the monkey away and place it in a group of monkeys, though she did not know where that would be.

"We hope that it will be as soon as possible because the monkey needs to be integrated soon - it is becoming really strange because it only knows people so it has not learned any proper social behavior," Brettmeister said, adding that the monkey was doing well otherwise.

When police late Monday attempted to dismantle stalls and move the street vendors to a designated area, they rioted, setting fires and hurling stones at police who responded with tear gas.

It was the worst clash of its kind since earlier this year when police began curbing the proliferation of street vendors across the country.

The Bizerte hospital, north of the capital, Tunis, could not confirm the cause of the elderly man's death Tuesday morning. Radio reported it was tear gas inhalation.

Tunisia's 2011 uprising against the dictatorship was sparked by the self-immolation of a frustrated street vendor.

The rand extended losses to a new four-year low against the dollar after the data, which reinforces the argument for further monetary loosening to boost struggling growth.

Africa's biggest economy expanded just 0.9 percent on a quarter-on-quarter basis in Q1 from 2.1 percent in the fourth quarter of last year, weighed down by the contraction in factory output, which accounts for 15 percent of GDP.

Economists polled by Reuters last week had forecast quarterly growth of 1.6 percent.

"It's a very tricky situation for the Reserve Bank's monetary policy committee. Growth is obviously a lot weaker than they thought," said Nedbank economist Nicky Weimar.

"You have to be realistic and say that it probably increases or strengthens the case of those that are calling for an interest rate cut."

The central bank kept interest rates on hold last week at 5.0 percent but admitted it had discussed the possibility of a rate reduction.

The rand fell to 9.7582 per dollar after the data, its weakest since March 2009, compared with Monday's close at 9.5914.

Government bond yields retreated, with the benchmark 2026 issue pulling back to 7.155 percent from 7.165 percent prior to the release.

The small, chocolate brown female with curved horns eluded five Jersey City police officers for more than 90 minutes by jumping back and forth over a central divider along the Pulaski Skyway, alternately disrupting traffic along both east and west-bound lanes, according to city spokesman Stan Eason.

Traffic was snarled from 7:10 a.m. until almost 9 a.m. along the elevated roadway, which traverses the Passaic and Hackensack Rivers between Newark and Jersey City and carries thousands of vehicles daily to the Holland Tunnel and into New York.

Four vehicles, whose drivers were attempting to avoid the zigzagging goat, were involved in a minor accident, police said. There were no injuries.

"A call came in: 'There was a motor vehicle accident, and there's a goat running around on the skyway," Eason said, adding that Jersey City police were not alarmed. "We had full-sized bucked deer running around in the metropolis downtown of Exchange Place about two years ago, before it jumped in the Hudson River and swam to Governor's Island, so nothing surprises us," he added.

The frisky goat eventually tired, Eason said, and officers were able to form a semi-circle around her and secure her in a noose.

Officials are still trying to determine where the goat came from. One of the goat's ears is tagged with a U.S. Department of Agriculture tag, indicating the animal likely escaped a truck headed to a slaughterhouse, Eason said. If no company claims the animal, it will be moved to a rural animal welfare facility that can accommodate livestock.

"If it can survive running around the Pulaski Skyway for two hours, and then winds up in a slaughterhouse, it's kind of sad," Eason said. "But if someone claims her, she is private property, so there's not much we can do."

"The 20/20 Experience," the singer's first album in seven years, was released in March and topped the U.S. album charts for three consecutive weeks.

He is now planning to release 10 news songs, and out-takes from the March release, in a second installment of "The 20/20 Experience" on September 30, record label RCA said.

The North American leg of Timberlake's tour will begin on October 31 in Montreal and finish on February 10, 2014, in Omaha, Nebraska. It will follow an abbreviated summer stadium tour with rapper Jay-Z.

The "Suit & Tie" singer will perform mostly in mid-sized cities, such as St. Louis, Indianapolis and Edmonton, that his "Legends of the Summer" tour with Jay-Z did not cover.

Live Nation has yet to announce the European, Australian and South American tour dates.

The release of "The 20/20 Experience" was the first new music from Timberlake, 32, since 2006 after the former N'Sync boy spent several years focusing on his movie career, launching his own record label, and marrying actress Jessica Biel.
