Sky clocked 22 minutes five seconds along the picturesque 17.4-kilometreroute on the island of Ischia. Movistar was second, nine seconds behind, and Astana featuring Wiggins' expected rival for the title, Vincenzo Nibali of Italy was third, 14 seconds back.

Garmin-Sharp, featuring defending Giro champion Ryder Hesjedal of Victoria, was seventh, 25 seconds behind Sky.

Italy's Dario Cataldo was the first Sky rider to cross the line but Puccio took the pink jersey courtesy of his better placement in Saturday's opening stage.

"It's a bit unexpected but I'm happy to have it," Puccio said. "I've got to thank the team. It was a great team effort."

The Omega Pharma-Quick Step team featuring stage 1 winner Mark Cavendish finished 17th, 48 seconds behind Sky.

Omega sorely missed its time trial specialist Tony Martin, who is not riding the Giro.

Wiggins, the Briton who followed his Tour title with a gold medal in the time trial at last year's London Olympics, has the same time as Puccio in the overall standings. Another Sky rider, Sergio Henao Montoya of Colombia, is third overall, also with the same time.

Wiggins gained 14 seconds on Nibali and 25 seconds on Hesjedal.

"It was a good performance for our team," Nibali said. "We're not time trial specialists most of us are climbers so this is OK."

Hesjedal was in 35th place after two stages, while Christian Meier of Sussex, N.B., was in 44th, 28 seconds back.

Other contenders such as 2011 Tour winner Cadel Evans and 2008 Olympic champion Samuel Sanchez lost even more time with their teams, BMC and Euskaltel, respectively.

The stage was held in perfect conditions on a technical course featuring two difficult climbs in the second half of the stage.

Cyclists arrived on the island off Naples by ferry Sunday morning and were returning to the mainland by boat immediately after the stage.

The Giro remains in the Naples region for Monday's third stage, a hilly and lengthy 222-kilometre leg from Sorrento to Marina di Ascea that follows the breathtaking Amalfi coast.

BUENOS AIRES, May 8 (Reuters) - Ronaldinho set the tone and Jo scored the goals as Atletico Mineiro lived up to their billing as Libertadores Cup favouriteswith a crushing 6-2 aggregate win over fellow Brazilians Sao Paulo on Wednesday.

Atletico won 4-1 on the night to advance to a quarter-finals along with Brazilian champions Fluminense, who won 2-0 to edge their duel with Ecuador's Emelec 3-2.

An exciting last-16, second leg contest in Belo Horizonte was decided by Atletico's brilliant finishing with Jo bagging a hat-trick and Diego Tardelli also scoring.

Atletico, looking for their first Libertadores Cup triumph, will meet either fellow Brazilians Palmeiras or Mexico's Tijuana in the last eight.

It was Sao Paulo's worst defeat in South America's elite club competition, which they have won three times.

"It was a team effort because from the first minute we showed that at the Independencia we are strong," said Jo, who opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a low shot from the edge of the box.

"Once again we managed to win with these marvellous fans, it's not any team that puts four past Sao Paulo," the former Everton and Manchester City striker told reporters.

Jo's second came in the 63rd minute when he beat the offside trap to take Donizete's headed pass and steer the ball between goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni's legs.

Atletico scored again almost from the restart with Tardelli chasing a poor headed back pass from Rafael Toloi meant for Ceni and lobbing the goalkeeper.

Ronaldinho laid on Jo's hat-trick in the 69th when he pulled the ball back close to the goal-line for the striker to steer it home.

Brazil's form team were on song and the former Barcelona ace, who had hit the bar with a free kick in the second minute, almost rounded off another fine performance with a brilliant solo goal near the end.

Ronaldinho beat four defenders on his way down the left before directing a curling right-footed shot from a narrow angle that just missed the top far corner.

Brazil striker Luis Fabiano, who missed Sao Paulo's 2-1 defeat in the first leg through suspension, pulled one back in the 76th minute.

A player from each side was sent off in added time for fighting, Atletico midfielder Rosinei and Sao Paulo defender Thiago Carleto.

Sao Paulo's director of football Adalberto Baptista defused criticism surrounding coach Ney Franco by saying he would see out his contract.

"We have to accept (our elimination), congratulate Atletico, they played a good match from the start, dominated the match," Baptista told Globo.

"There's only one measure to be taken, we have to work a lot. The (Brazilian) championship is very long and we have to start well... with Ney France, for sure, until the end of the year."

In Rio de Janeiro, Fluminense captain Fred struck after half an hour to square the tie with Emelec after losing 2-1 in the first leg in Guayaquil last week.

Defender Carlinhos secured Flu's ticket with a second goal five minutes from time when Emelec were down to nine men.

FIRST PERSON | I penned depressing, dark poems and suicidal short stories as a teenager. Living in a small town, I participated in drugs and alcohol. It could have been "typical" teenage behavior. I thought so, even though I'd dropped out of high school and continued the sex, drugs, and drinking.

At 17, I left home with a man 12 years older than myself, continuing the pattern; notebooks were filled with poems on loneliness, self-loathing, and abuse. I amped myself up on drugs for the energy to work. I cared about nothing but the constant irrational fears itching inside my head. Even the abuse that man I'd left home for was nothing but fodder for a pen and paper.

Within a year, I tried to kill myself. It was a simple thing; I wasn't in a state of panic or heartbreak. I was terrified of death. But I'd decided I wouldn't allow the abuse to kill me and give someone else the satisfaction of having done it.

I swallowed a bottle of high-end pain killers and closed my eyes.

After the incident -- which I didn't care had failed -- I went to a psychiatrist once. A dreary place in Denver stinking of mold, catering to drifters with no money or home address; I answered questions that showed a total lack of interest, very poor self-esteem, little to no energy, and withdrawal from society at every opportunity.

Depression. It sounds so self-pitying, just a word filled with stigma and angst. I never returned.

Teenage years blurred into official adulthood. Believing I had no prospects, I remained with the man who'd come and go from prison, stints of time during which I wrote letters that expressed all the right emotions of longing and love. Promises to remain faithful and to be waiting; everything I knew I should feel but didn't.

Pregnancy drove me to seek help and leave the abuse behind. Since I was seeing a physician, I assumed that they would be able to help me. Depression reconfirmed, I went from one anti-depressant to another as they stopped working and I'd be floored by fear and depression. Bouts of energy broke in, an escape, and the diagnosis became bipolar.

The series of drugs that came after this diagnosis spun me into an anxiety breakdown of horror that paralyzed me.

Fifteen years later, I've dropped the stigmas and see a psychiatrist. Dysthymia was the problem all along, a sneaky form of depression that is acute and chronic. I deal with its common co-disorder, anxiety, with therapy. And I find myself optimistic, wistful, wishing I'd had the chance to have a life before.

The self-proclaimed rednecks of A&E's smash hit reality show, "Duck Dynasty," are everywhere, from the country music awards, to the White House Correspondents' Dinner, and even the top of ratings charts with more than 9.6 million people tuning in to their season 3 finale on April 24. And although the Robertson family, a close-knit clan who own and operate a thriving duck call and decoy business called Duck Commander, may be in the limelight, there are still a few things you might not know about them.

3. Phil Robertson recently ran into his old football friend, Terry Bradshaw, at the airport. When the two men attended Louisiana Tech University, Robertson played first string quarterback ahead of Bradshaw.

4. Contrary to popular belief, the tea Uncle Si always drinks is unsweetened.

5. The "Duck Dynasty" clan appeared in Darius Rucker's "Wagon Wheel" music video, a remake of the popular Old Crow Medicine Show song.

6. Jase, Willie and Jep's wives actually do love their husband's beards, and prefer them to the "preppy look" the men used to have.

The regime's advance into Khirbet Ghazaleh, a town south of Damascus along a key artery to the border, came after weeks of fighting and government attempts to secure the highway.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the push was part of a wider offensive against rebels in which President Bashar Assad's troops have regained some areas around Damascus, in the central province of Homs near the Lebanese border and in the region of Aleppo to the north.

It was not immediately clear if the government had pulled the plug on Internet, triggering a blackout similar to a two-day outage that Syria experienced late last fall. Cellphone and phone services also were out in much of the country Wednesday.

Syrian authorities have in the past cut phone and Internet service in selected areas to disrupt rebel communications when regime forces were conducting major operations but widespread outages, however, have been rare.

The rebels and the government blamed one another for the blackout last year, which coincided with a major military operation in areas around the capital and near the Damascus International Airport.

Meanwhile, the Observatory and another activist group, the Aleppo Media Center, said opposition fighters shot down a fighter jet that was bombing rebel positions in the battle for the Mannagh airbase near the border with Turkey.

Rebels stormed the besieged air base on Sunday and the fighting is now taking place inside the sprawling facility, the activists said. Also Sunday, the rebels downed a military helicopter in the eastern Deir el-Zour region, killing eight government troops who were on board.

Assad's forces on Wednesday attacked a military post they had lost to the rebels earlier in the northern town of Khan al-Assal, the two activist groups said.

As the violence continued on the ground, the United States and Russia, a key ally of Assad's government, said they'll convene a new international conference later this month to build on a transition plan they set out last year in Geneva.

Speaking in Moscow after his discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and other officials, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said the plan should be a roadmap for peace and not just a "piece of paper."

The goal is still to bring the Assad regime and representatives from the opposition together for talks on setting up an interim government, Kerry said Tuesday. The Geneva plan, which never gained traction, allowed each side to veto candidates it found unacceptable.

The Geneva proposal also calls for an open-ended cease-fire and the formation of a transitional government to run the country until new elections can be held and a new constitution drafted.

Meanwhile, in southern Syria, rebels were holding four U.N. peacekeepers who were abducted Tuesday near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

The abduction was the second such incident in the area in two months. It exposed the vulnerability of the U.N. peacekeeping mission during the Syrian civil war and sent a worrisome signal to Syria's neighbors including Israel about the ensuing lawlessness along their shared frontiers.

Syria's 2-year crisis that has so far claimed the lives of more than 70,000 people, according to the United Nations.

* According to the poll, 63 percent of Americans think that having North America free from importing oil from outside the continent is more important than reducing greenhouse gases. Thirty percent of respondents felt that reducing greenhouse gases was the priority of the two issues.

* In Canada, 55 percent selected freeing North America for imported oil as more important, while 38 percent chose addressing greenhouse gases.

* Seventy percent of Americans and 60 percent of Canadians are favorable to the idea of the Keystone pipeline, Nanos' poll revealed, with 74 and 68 percent respectively stating that they support or somewhat support proceeding with the project.

* Seventy-six percent of Americans and 66 percent of Canadians feel that a continental energy strategy should be pursued, and most of those polled from each country felt that there should be common environmental standards.

* When asked about the importance of reducing greenhouse gases separately from the issue of the Keystone XL pipeline, a majority of both Americans and Canadians felt that the issue was important.

* Eighty-eight percent of Americans feel that ensuring a stable energy supply is important, but that number drops to 60 percent in Canada.

Crosby said Wednesday broken jaw will keep him out of Pittsburgh's playoff opener against the New York Islanders Wednesday night. Crosby hasn't played since taking an errant shot to the face in a game against the Islanders on March 30. He met with a doctor on Tuesday and while the doctor was pleased with Crosby's progress he still has not received clearance to play.

"He said everything looks good, he just wasn't prepared to let me play," Crosby said. "Obviously I would love to have the chance to play tonight but that's not the way it is and (I'll) make sure I'm ready when the time comes."

Crosby skated alongside his teammates on Wednesday morning then spent an additional 30 minutes on the ice getting extra work in. He said he has not been given a timetable for his return. Game 2 is Friday night.

"He didn't give me a date and I'm sure if he gives a date, I'd have pretty high expectations of that date," Crosby said. "I'm sure he's waiting until he feels comfortable."

The Penguins went 8-4 while playing without Crosby for the final quarter of the season and beat the Islanders in four of their five meetings this year.

Despite missing 12 games, Crosby still finished tied for third in the NHL scoring race with 56 points and he has torched the Islanders throughout his career, scoring 20 goals and dishing out 55 assists against the Islanders, the most points has against any team.

New York coach Jack Capuano thinks even without Crosby the star-laden Penguins remain one of the most dangerous teams in the league. In addition to reigning NHL MVP Evgeni Malkin, the Penguins added future Hall of Famer Jarome Iginla and veterans Jussi Jokinen, Brenden Morrow and Doug Murray at the trade deadline.

"Obviously again they've got a lot of depth," Capuano said.

(Reuters) - The Justice Department said on Tuesday that a federal court had authorized the Internal Revenue Service to seek information on U.S. taxpayers who may have accounts at Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce FirstCaribbean International Bank (FCIB).

In a move resembling a recent IRS inquiry into Americans with Swiss bank accounts, the Justice Department said a court order would let the IRS serve a 'John Doe' summons seeking records of FCIB's U.S. correspondent account at Wells Fargo & Co. A correspondent account is a bank deposit account maintained by one bank for another bank.

The order would allow the IRS to identify U.S. taxpayers with "interests in financial accounts at FCIB and other financial institutions that used FCIB's Wells Fargo correspondent account," the Justice Department said in a statement.

"Our work here shows our resolve to pursue these cases in all parts of the world, regardless of whether the person hiding money overseas chooses a bank with no offices on U.S. soil," IRS Acting Commissioner Steven Miller said in a statement.

FCIB and CIBC did not immediately reply to requests for comment.

A spokesman for Wells Fargo said the bank would "review the summons and respond as legally required."

FCIB, based in Barbados, has branches in 18 Caribbean countries. According to its website, the bank was formed in 2002 by Britain's Barclays Bank and CIBC. In 2006, CIBC became the bank's majority shareholder, according to the website.

FCIB does not have U.S. branches but it has a correspondent account in the United States at Wells Fargo, Justice said.

The IRS uses 'John Doe' summonses to get information on possible tax law breakers whose identities are unknown. "This John Doe summons directs Wells Fargo to produce records identifying U.S. taxpayers with accounts at FCIB and other banks that used FCIB's correspondent account," the statement said.

In a declaration filed to the court, a senior IRS revenue agent said many FCIB customers in the John Doe class may have been under-reporting income, evading income taxes, or otherwise violating the internal revenue laws of the United States.

The FCIB case stemmed from information from 129 customers of the Barbados bank and its predecessor banks who took part in an IRS voluntary disclosure program, the Justice Department said.

In a similar case in January 2013, a federal court allowed the IRS to serve a 'John Doe' summons on Switzerland's UBS AG, seeking records of Swiss bank Wegelin & Co.'s U.S. correspondent account at UBS.

That action was part of a wide-ranging U.S. government effort to crack down on tax avoidance by Americans.

Wegelin, Switzerland's oldest bank, in March agreed to pay nearly $58 million in penalties and said it would shut its doors after admitting to helping wealthy Americans evade taxes.

The serving of 'John Doe' summons on correspondent accounts is likely to become more common as the government widens its tax inquiries beyond Switzerland, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein, said William Sharp, a lawyer who represents taxpayers.

Despite their respective injury concerns, they will meet for the 16th time in a championship. Nadal leads 8-7 in their finals.

"I am not the kind of player who is stupid and says, 'I want to play against the best,'" Nadal said joking, added he would rather face an easier opponent on Sunday.

Nadal can improve upon his formidable record on the Monte Carlo red clay winner of the last eight titles and 46 consecutive match victories. He defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3, 7-6 (3) in the semifinals on Saturday to set up a rematch with Djokovic.

The Spaniard has reached five successive finals since returning from a seven-month layoff for a left knee injury. He will go for his fourth title of the season against Djokovic, who cruised past unseeded Fabio Fognini of Italy 6-2, 6-1.

The No. 1 player showed no sign his right ankle was bothering him, two weeks after twisting it during a Davis Cup match against the United States.

"At the start of the week, the way I felt in the first match, if somebody told me I'd be playing finals, I'd be very happy to hear that," Djokovic said. "I'm handling it much better than I was at the start of the week. It has been improving and the pain has been decreasing. It's much, much less than before."

Djokovic and Nadal have not played against each other since last year's French Open final, which Nadal won. He has won their last three encounters, after Djokovic took the previous seven all of which were tournament finals. Nadal leads their head-to-head contests 19-14.

"I need to have a very optimistic mindset," Djokovic said. "I'm not going out there to play my best; I'm going out there to win. That's how I'm going to feel tomorrow."

Nadal has been on a winning roll at Monte Carlo since 2005. His last loss here was to former French Open champ Guillermo Coria in 2003, and he missed the following year because of injury.

He insists he's still some way from full fitness, despite dropping only one set so far.

"I know I need time to be 100 percent fit," said Nadal, adding he thinks Djokovic's injury was tame by comparison. "He stopped for, what, a few days for his ankle?"

Their finals have gone in cycles: Nadal won the first five; Djokovic the next seven; Nadal the following three.

"I know what I need to do," Djokovic said. "Of course, it's easier said than done."

In Grand Slam finals, Djokovic leads 3-2.

The sixth-seeded Tsonga saved four match points and he rallied back from 5-1 down to force a second-set tiebreaker before Nadal clinched the victory with a forehand winner.

"My feeling was I played a solid first set without doing anything special, but with no mistakes," said Nadal, adding that he was hampered by the windy conditions. "It's true that for me it's better if we see a little bit more sunshine."

Tsonga started strong but missed three break chances in the fourth game including one which left him shaking his head in disbelief after Nadal scooped the ball off his ankles and whipped it back down the line. The flustered Frenchman made 17 unforced errors in the first set compared to four for Nadal.

"I always try to be aggressive when I play him. It's the only way for me. If I stay back, there's no way I can win," Tsonga said. "But I can't rush to the net either because otherwise he hits a passing shot, and 90 percent of the time I lose the point. So I have to have the right mix between patience and aggressiveness."

Fognini made 26 unforced errors against Djokovic and was jeered off the court after losing his first Masters semifinal in 52 minutes.

The Italian called for a trainer at 4-1.

But he looked demoralized and at the next changeover he called for the trainer again, pointing to his left shin as the trainer sprayed and taped it. He said he hurt it playing football tennis with his coach.
