Jermain Beckford's 89th minute header looked to have earned Jamaica a point after the United States had led through a Jozy Altidore goal on the half hour.

But Michael Bradley slipped the ball inside the area to Evans who, with a surprising amount of space, drove past Jamaican keeper Donovan Ricketts to seal the win.

The victory moves the United States to seven points from four games as they bid to earn one of three automatic qualification spots from the six-team CONCACAF final qualifying group.

Costa Rica, who lead on goal difference, and Mexico are also on seven points although the Mexicans have played one more game.

Panama are on six points, Honduras have four and Jamaica's chances now look slim as they sit at the bottom of the table with just two points.

It wasn't an entirely convincing performance from the U.S. but coach Juergen Klinsmann was pleased with the character his team showed as they responded to the blow of a late equaliser to get their first ever win in Kingston in a qualifier.

"They were angry with themselves about allowing that goal and they responded," said the former German national team striker and coach.

Klinsmann's team started brightly and went close to an opener in the second minute when Bradley struck the post with a drive from 20 yards out.

The United States took the lead when Altidore, who had an early effort ruled out for offside, rose to power in a superb cross from winger Graham Zusi.

Nine minutes later Jamaica almost drew level when Rodolph Austin burst through on to a Ryan Johnson pass but his low shot struck the post.

The United States looked in charge but with a minute of regulation time remaining, Beckford was left unmarked to head home from an Austin cross.

However, there was more drama to come and three minutes later the United States restored their advantage to get their first away win in qualifying.

There were some other major positives for Klinsmann as Evans looked at ease in a new role at right-back, Zusi played with intelligence on the right flank and Altidore, who scored in Sunday's 4-3 friendly win over Germany, looked to be full of confidence.

The United States host Panama in Seattle on Tuesday and finish their trio of June qualifiers against Honduras in Salt Lake on June 18.

And with the month-end hovering, many investors were looking to book profits following another solid performance across the world's stock markets. Many indexes have hit a series of all-time highs during May despite a wobble last week.

The latest speculation surrounding the Fed came after a raft of positive economic news on Tuesday. Though investors initially cheered the positive consumer confidence and housing news, they then started to fret over the prospect of the Fed reducing the amount of assets it buys each month what is commonly referred to in financial markets as tapering.

Earlier Wednesday, the yield, or interest rate, for ten-year U.S. Treasury bonds hit its highest level so far this year, at 2.23 percent a sign investors think the Fed's monetary policy will become less easy and cheap.

The Fed, like other central banks, has been buying assets over the past few years as part of an attempt to lower long-term interest rates and shore up the U.S. economy after the financial crisis. That new money has found its way into financial markets and given a number of assets, such as stocks, a big push.

"Concerns that the Federal Reserve will reduce debt purchases allowed the bears to come into play once again," said Lee Mumford, a trader at Spreadex.

In Europe, the FTSE 100 index of leading British shares closed down 2 percent at 6,627.17 while Germany's DAX fell 1.7 percent to 8,336.58. The CAC-40 was 1.9 percent lower at 3,974.12.

In the U.S., the Dow Jones industrial average was down 0.9 percent at 15,273 while the broader S&P 500 index also fell 0.9 percent to 1,645.

Over the coming days and weeks, the U.S. economic dataflow will likely continue to drive markets given the uncertainty over the Fed's stance.

"Our view is that the Fed will tread carefully and that the time is not yet ripe to pare back its current rate of bond purchases," said Neil MacKinnon, global macro strategist at VTB Capital.

He noted unemployment remained high, and that one of the Fed's tasks when setting policy is to bring joblessness down.

In the currency markets, the dollar was trading on the soft side following its recent stellar run. The euro was up 0.7 percent higher at $1.2944, while the dollar fell 0.9 percent to 101.30 yen.

Earlier in Asia, stocks finished modestly higher on the heels of a new record for the Dow, after the Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller survey found that U.S. home prices rose 10.9 percent in March, the most since April 2006. On top of that, the Conference Board in Washington reported consumer confidence rising to a five-year high.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 0.1 percent to close at 14,326.46 while South Korea's Kospi advanced 0.8 percent to 2,001.20. Benchmarks in mainland China but Hong Kong's Hang Seng tumbled 1.6 percent to 22,554.93.

Oil prices tracked equities lower, with the benchmark New York rate down 77 cents at $94.24 a barrel.

The pro-opposition Aleppo Media Center says clashes are underway between rebels and government troops at the prison in Aleppo. The center says a large fire has broken out at the facility.

Friday's fighting comes a week after President Bashar Assad's forces repelled a rebel raid on the prison that sought to free hundreds of political prisoners.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says intense fighting is also going on in the town of Qusair, near the border with Lebanon.

Government forces have been trying to recapture the town since Sunday. State-run news agency SANA says troops killed a "large number" of rebels in the latest clashes.

But like all sources of energy, wind power comes at a cost one that's too often borne by eagles, hawks, falcons, owls and other birds.

Wind turbines kill more than 573,000 birds each year in the United States, according to , including federally protected species like bald eagles and golden eagles. []

Even bats are falling victim to wind-turbine blades: The Pennsylvania Game Commission estimates that more than 10,000 bats are killed in the state each year by wind turbines, thereports.

Of course, birds die from other causes, too: Structures like glass-walled office buildings and utility towers, vehicular collisions and carnivorous animals (including domestic cats) kill far more birds each year than wind turbines do.

Though it can appear as though theyre turning at a slow, almost relaxed pace, wind-turbine blades actually move very rapidly: The outer tips of some turbines' blades can reach speeds of 179 mph (288 kilometers per hour) and can easily slice off an eagle's wing.

And when hawks, falcons and eagles are flying, they're usually looking down at the ground for prey, not glancing up to watch for a knifelike blade whipping down on them from above.

"There is nothing in the evolution of eagles that would come near to describing a wind turbine," Grainger Hunt, a raptor specialist with the Peregrine Fund, told the AP. "There has never been an opportunity to adapt to that sort of threat."

Compounding the problem is the design of some wind turbines: The lattice work found on older models makes an ideal perch for larger birds of prey, so they're attracted to the same spires that are also a death trap.

Wind-farm siting is another factor. Many wind farms, like the Altamont Pass Wind Farm in northern California, were constructed in the middle of important migratory routes and are surrounded by prime raptor habitat.

Altamont Pass has come under fire for being one of the deadliest wind farms in the world. One study found almost 10,000 birds die each year beneath the wind-turbine blades at Altamont, and most of them are federally protected raptors or are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, the Journal reports.

As the number of maimed and dead birds grows, several solutions have been proposed to stem the grisly mutilations of birds and bats occurring at wind farms. Siting wind turbines in areas with lower bird populations is one option.

And newer turbine designs, such as those without lattice frames and with vertical-axis rotors, can reduce the deadly impact that wind turbines have on bird populations worldwide.

It's working at Altamont: Modernizing older turbines and placing them away from certain corridors has reduced the death rate for some bird species by 50 percent, according to .

The authors interviewed 24 people aged 19 to 34 about their digital-breakup habits and found that they fell into : Deleters, who immediately erase all texts, untag all photos, and defriend their exes; keepers, who hold onto everything and continue to follow (let's be real... stalk) their exes on Facebook; selective disposers, who hang onto just a few special physical and digital possessions and are "more adaptive" (healthier). Unfortunately, only four of those interviewed fell into that last category.

The other two approaches come with their own emotional turmoil that is exacerbated by social media. For the deleters, their actions are often impulsive. How many of us have sat with our laptops open and a glass of Merlot and quickly de-friended an ex on Facebook or erased their texts? This is "beneficial on a short-term basis," . However, "deleters sometimes regret failing to save mementos symbolizing a chapter in their lives." Moreover, total deletion isn't even always an option on Facebook. As"pictures and messages posted on social networks are not so easy to erase, especially if they have been posted online by someone else."

For the keepers, it's extra hard to say goodbye to an old boyfriend or girlfriend. One participant : "I try to get his information through social networks in a quiet way." According to the authors, keepers' behavior "leads the romantic attachment to persist, which prolongs the grief process." Facebook, in particular, is "very problematic," . "The other person is just a click away. There's almost this continual contact which is very compelling." While we can cut people out of photographs, donate exes' sweaters to charity (or burn them), and even delete phone numbers, finding the most up-to-date info on old flames is just a matter of one tempting search on Facebook. Furthermore, since there is such an abundance of digital memories in 21st Century relationships,that locating and erasing them all is "very, very emotionally taxing."

So, what are the impulsive and weak-willed Facebook users to do? The authors suggest the creation ofsoftware thatThen, people can later erase or keep whichever digital possessions they choose... when they're in a better state of mind.

"Deleting, defriending, and signing out of an account can be done quietly and with dignity," . "And when you're newly single, preserving your dignity should be your top priority."

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The percentage of children in Wisconsin public schools who come from families poor enough to receive free and reduced-priced lunches has increased for the ninth year in a row.

The state Department of Public Instruction reported Monday that 43.2 percent of children in public schools are on the programs, up from 42.5 percent the previous year.

There are nearly 359,000 students in Wisconsin in the programs.

Nearly 37 percent of students come from families that earn less than $30,000 a year, qualifying them for free meals. Another 6.3 percent are eligible for reduced-price meals.

There are 110 school districts with more than half of their students in the program, including Wisconsin's five largest districts in Milwaukee, Madison, Kenosha, Green Bay and Racine.

The Sharks clawed back into the best of seven series after Couture took advantage of a power play penalty just 1:29 into the extra period.

The Kings' Robyn Regehr (hooking) and Trevor Lewis (interference) were both penalized inside the final minute of regulation to give San Jose a five-on-three situation into overtime.

SEATTLE (AP) -- Justices on the Washington Supreme Court are considering whether the state should have to pay a $100 million verdict awarded to some 22,000 home care workers who were shortchanged by a rule that was in effect from 2003 to 2007.

Under the Department of Social and Health Services rule, workers who cared for low-income, severely disabled people automatically had their pay reduced by 15 percent if they lived with the person they cared for. The department reasoned that if the caregivers lived at the home, then some amount of the work the caregivers performed cooking, for example would benefit the caregiver, who shouldn't be paid for it.

The state Supreme Court struck down the policy in 2007, saying it was inconsistent with federal Medicaid rules. The workers sued to get the money they said they were owed, and the recipients of the care sued as well. After tortuous litigation that included a detour into federal court, the recipients were not awarded any money, but a Thurston County Superior Court jury sided with the workers in 2011 and awarded $57 million.

A judge tacked on interest, bringing the total award to more than $100 million. The state appealed, and the justices heard arguments Tuesday.

"DSHS reversed over two decades of practice ... under which it paid providers for all services they worked," John White, an attorney for the workers, told the court. "DSHS eliminated payment for a portion of the hours that it required live-in providers to work."

The state relies on in-home caregivers as a cheaper, more humane alternative to institutionalized care for poor, disabled people. While the disabled people themselves are considered the employers of the caregivers for legal reasons, the state writes the contracts for the caregivers, letting them know how many hours of care the disabled people are entitled to under Medicaid.

A lawyer for the state, Deputy Solicitor General Jay Geck, asked the justices to reverse the verdict on several grounds. He noted that the lower court's jury found that the state did not breach its contracts with the caregivers; instead, it found that the state's decision to reduce the workers' pay violated a duty of "good faith or fair dealing" that the state owed to them.

The state insists that although it is required to act in good faith, it satisfied that obligation by following the terms of its contracts with providers.

"The contracts were utterly clear," Geck said. "The providers would be paid only the amount awarded to the individual clients under Medicaid. They said they would accept that amount."

Geck also said that if the justices don't reverse the verdict, they should at the very least reduce it. He argued that the lower court should never have awarded interest, because under the law, interest can only be tacked on to damages that are totaled specifically, rather than estimated a point contested by the workers' lawyer.

A summary of the case produced by DSHS and the state attorney general's office highlights the financial concerns posed by the verdict.

"The judgment in this case is unprecedented and undermines the fiscal planning needed for all DSHS programs," it said. "This is detrimental to the people who rely on funding for DSHS services, the taxpayers, and the continued viability of public assistance programs."

But in an interview, White argued that DSHS expected workers to perform the work and they should be paid for it. Many of them were making close to minimum wage, and the 15 percent reduction put many below minimum wage, he said.

"The state wouldn't need to come up with the judgment if the Department of Social and Health Services had done what it was supposed to do in the first place," White said.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republicans investigating the Internal Revenue Service want to question five employees about the tax agency's targeting of the Tea Party and other conservative groups, an effort that a key lawmaker said was part of a fact-finding mission.

"It appears that a number of IRS employees played key roles in carrying out the improper scrutiny," Republican Representative Darrell Issa, head of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives, said in a letter on Wednesday to the IRS requesting interviews with the employees.

A congressional aide said the five workers sought for questioning were chosen based on a timeline from the Treasury Department Inspector General for Tax Administration report that revealed the stepped-up IRS scrutiny and listed the job roles involved in the activity. It was unclear whether these employees had any role in any wrongdoing.

The IRS, which did not respond to a request for comment on Issa's letter, has not released the names of employees who were involved in an effort launched in 2010 in Cincinnati to target Tea Party and other conservative groups for extra scrutiny as they sought tax-exempt status.

The agency has said it will cooperate with any inquiries.

The targeting effort eventually came to the knowledge of top IRS officials in Washington, one of whom acknowledged it and apologized publicly Friday. Faced with a widening scandal, President Barack Obama announced on Wednesday that the acting director of the IRS, Steven Miller, would resign.

In a letter to employees, Miller praised the agency's work and said he was stepping down to restore confidence in the IRS.

CNN has reported that Miller told a lawmaker that the IRS was focusing on two "rogue" employees.

Republicans are looking for bigger culprits.

"The IRS low-level employees who made these egregious decisions need to be dealt with, but we also need to find out who directed them to do it and how high up does it go and who knew about it?" Republican Senator Rob Portman told Reuters in an interview.

FIVE IRS EMPLOYEES SOUGHT FOR QUESTIONING

One of the employees sought by Issa is Holly Paz, the Washington-based director of rulings and agreements for the tax exempt division, who contributed at least $2,000 to the Obama Victory Fund in 2008, according to federal election records.

A congressional aide said there was greater interest in her among the group because she appears to play multiple roles throughout the inspector general's timeline.

According to the inspector general, the director of rulings and agreements learned of the first set of "sensitive case reports" under the controversial checklist in April 2010.

In 2012 Paz announced at a tax conference steps the IRS was taking to question large tax-exempt groups about their political activities.

Paz said at the time that the IRS was looking at whether such groups were complying with the law, which does not allow exemptions for groups primarily focused on political activities, according to the Wall Street Journal, citing her comments at the conference. Paz didn't name any specific groups.

The Journal named Crossroads GPS, the giant organizing committee co-founded by Republican operative Karl Rove, as one group the IRS would examine. Priorities USA, a rival started by Obama aides, is another of the biggest of these groups.

Paz could not be reached for comment.

Another employee Issa wants to question is Greg Muthert, who told Reuters he is a 28-year veteran agent in the Cincinnati office.

Muthert declined to elaborate on his role with the IRS and to what extent, if any, he was involved in the controversial flagging of certain groups. He defended the work of the Cincinnati office.

"I don't know what to think. Something's wrong, but I'm going to speak my piece one time, and that's it," Muthert, who is listed as a "screener" in Issa's letter, said.

Issa also asked to speak with Joseph Herr. A Tea Party group, the Ohio Liberty Coalition, told Reuters that Herr handled its application for tax-exempt status and asked questions the group considered inappropriate. It was not clear why they were deemed inappropriate by the group.

Some Tea Party groups complained to members of Congress about the extensive questioning from the IRS. In letters the groups had complained that the IRS was seeking lists of donors and many documents.

Herr could not be reached for comment at his home in Cincinnati.

The Clear Lake Tea Party of Texas publicly complained about an IRS employee cited in Issa's letter, Elizabeth Hofacre, who handled the group's application. Hofacre could not be reached for comment.

Mary Huls, president of the Clear Lake Tea Party in Texas, told Reuters her group received a letter from Hofacre in which the IRS requested answers to 19 additional questions.

Hofacre's letter shows that the group was asked for a list of speakers and their qualifications for events, resumes for each board member, a list of questions the group asked political candidates at so-called job interviews and a list of who was invited to those events.

"They were personal and they didn't seem to have too much bearing on whether or not we could be tax exempt," Huls said.

The group stopped the process "because then we thought that we would lose our rights of free speech," Huls said.

The fifth employee listed in the letter is John Shafer, who Issa's letter calls a "screening group manager." Shafer could not be located for comment.
