Supersonic skydiver reached 844 mph in r

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) Supersonic skydiver Felix Baumgartner was faster than he or anyone else thought during his record-setting jump last October from 24 miles up.

The Austrian parachutist known as "Fearless Felix" reached 843.6 mph, according to official numbers released Monday. That's equivalent to Mach 1.25, or 1.25 times the speed of sound.

His top speed initially was estimated at 10 mph slower at 834 mph, or Mach 1.24.

Either way, he became the first human to break the sound barrier with only his body. He wore a pressurized suit and hopped from a capsule hoisted by a giant helium balloon over New Mexico.

Baumgartner was supersonic for a half-minute "quite remarkable," according to Brian Utley, the record-keeping official who was present for the Oct. 14 feat.

The 43-year-old's heart rate remained below 185 beats a minute, and his breathing was fairly steady.

The leap was from an altitude of 127,852 feet. That's 248 feet lower than original estimates, but still stratospheric.

"He jumped from a little bit lower, but he actually went a little bit faster, which was pretty exciting," said Art Thompson, technical project director for the Red Bull-sponsored project.

"It's fun for us to see reaching Mach speeds and proving out a lot of the safety systems," Thompson said in a phone interview from his aerospace company in Lancaster, Calif.

Thompson said everything pretty much unfolded as anticipated, with no big surprises in the final report. The updated records were provided by Utley, official observer for the National Aeronautic Association's contest and records board. Utley was in Roswell, N.M., for Baumgartner's grand finale following two test jumps.

Based on all the data collected from sensors on Baumgartner's suit, Utley determined that Baumgartner was 34 seconds into his jump when he reached Mach 1. The speed for breaking the sound barrier depends on the temperature at a given altitude; for Baumgartner, that came together just shy of 110,000 feet.

He reached peak speed by the time he was at 91,300 feet, 50 seconds into the jump, and was back to subsonic by 75,300 feet, give or take, 64 seconds into his free fall.

His entire free fall lasted four minutes, 20 seconds. He used a parachute to cover the final 5,000 feet, landing on his feet in the desert outside Roswell.

Not everything went well.

Baumgartner went into a dreaded flat spin while still supersonic. He spun for 13 seconds at approximately 60 revolutions per minute, making 14 to 16 spins before using his body to regain control, Thompson said. The skydiver was well within safety limits the entire time, he noted. Baumgartner's brain remained under 2G, or two times the force of gravity, during the spin.

If the flat spin had lasted longer and been more severe exceeding six continuous seconds at 3.5 G Baumgartner's drogue, or stabilizing, parachute would have deployed automatically. Doctors worried about him blacking out and suffering a stroke or, in the case of a suit tear, his blood boiling at such an extreme altitude. The outside temperature registered as low as minus 96 Fahrenheit.

In the foreword of the 71-page report, Baumgartner said he never imagined how many people would share in his dream to make a supersonic free fall from so high.

Some 52 million people watched YouTube's live stream of the exploit.

The scientific and engineering experts who helped bring him back alive "broke boundaries in their own fields just as surely as I broke the sound barrier," Baumgartner wrote.

Baumgartner shattered the previous record set by Joe Kittinger, an Air Force officer, in 1960. Kittinger did not quite reach supersonic speed during his jump from 19.5 miles up.

Kittinger noted in the Red Bull Stratos report (Stratos for stratosphere) that future work is needed to test a stabilizing parachute for use at extreme altitudes.

The private project was aimed, from the start, at helping future space crews whether NASA or commercial survive high-altitude accidents.

If a highly trained jumper like Baumgartner with 2,500 jumps couldn't prevent a flat spin, "an astronaut, pilot or space tourist could not overcome this spinning probability," Kittinger wrote.

Thompson agreed, noting that given the right safety gear and the right conditions, there's "a remote possibility" a space crew could survive even under such harsh circumstances as were faced by the space shuttle Columbia astronauts.

All seven astronauts perished as Columbia returned to Earth on Feb. 1, 2003. One of the crew, Laurel Clark, was married to the former NASA flight surgeon who led Baumgartner's medical team, Dr. Jonathan Clark.

"You never know what the possibilities are ... that's the direction we need to look at," Thompson said.

___

Online:

http://www.redbullstratos.com/

http://phillipivu.orbs.com/downloads+an+aeronautical+engineer%27s+vi
http://skyehmh.soup.io/post/314206105/Download-Mom-Rules-Because-Even-Super-Heroes
http://friendfeed.com/tfekr/02a639c2/downloads-called-other-worlds-series-ebook
http://friendfeed.com/pdsclpu/932e1158/downloads-additive-number-theory-classical
http://catherinebay.orbs.com/y+por+eso+rompimos+%28episodio+1%29+%28spa
http://sylvesterdya.skyrock.com/3163013226-Download-The-Rhino-s-Specs-Speaclai-an-tSronbheannaigh-book.html
http://elvineemr.skyrock.com/3163013228-Hardy-Boys-47-The-Mystery-of-the-Whale-Tattoo-GB-read-online.html
http://friendfeed.com/trrycoo/66c4fd1f/period-book-downloads
http://friendfeed.com/eyiiuao/875124ec/how-insurance-works-introduction-to-property
http://aftonzq.orbs.com/downloads+the+2009+import+and+export+ma
http://christianyyam.soup.io/post/314206110/Basic-Infection-Control-for-Healthcare-Providers
http://twitpic.com/cru5zw
http://friendfeed.com/vaoobob/5d232966/anesthesia-and-analgesia-in-laboratory
http://dirkyqtp.skyrock.com/3163013240-Download-Western-European-Consumer-Packaged-Goods-Manufacturing.html
http://charlotteabzi.skyrock.com/3163013236-Downloads-Essential-Crochet-Create-30-Irresistible-Projects-with-a-Few.html
http://stevenroc.skyrock.com/3163013242-Union-College-Alumni-in-the-Civil-War-1861-1865-Prepared-for-the.html
http://twitpic.com/cru606
http://abbeyobr.skyrock.com/3163013244-AVP-Alien-vs-Predator-The-Movie-Novelization-e-book-downloads.html

Boston church official faces racketeerin

BOSTON (AP) A Boston church official who claimed in an autobiography he was a leg-breaker for reputed gangster James "Whitey" Bulger faces accusations that he looted the church's assets for personal financial gain.

Federal agents arrested Edward MacKenzie Jr. on Wednesday after a grand jury indicted him on charges including racketeering, extortion, and wire fraud, and well as conspiracy charges involving racketeering, money laundering and mail fraud.

MacKenzie, 54, of Weymouth was the director of operations at the Boston Society of the New Jerusalem Church, whose members are Swedenborgian, a Bible-based denomination.

Federal authorities said MacKenzie started the salaried position in 2003 and "began to systematically loot the church of its considerable financial assets through a combination of fraud, deceit, extortion, theft and bribery."

The indictment also alleged he threatened people who worked at the church, including by giving them signed copies of his 2003 autobiography in which he admitted to crimes that included burglary, robbery, armed assault and drug trafficking.

The voice mailbox at a Weymouth phone listing for MacKenzie was full and would not accept messages. His attorney didn't immediately return messages seeking comment Wednesday evening.

Nick Carter, an attorney for the church, said New Jerusalem put MacKenzie on administrative leave three weeks ago before firing him Wednesday.

"The church continues to cooperate fully with law enforcement and remains dedicated to its religious and charitable activities," Carter said, declining to answer other questions.

MacKenzie's arrest wasn't the first sign of friction involving him and the church.

In 2004, the national Swedenborgian church sued MacKenzie and another church official in federal court, alleging they tried to seize control of the Boston church's assets by taking advantage of its mentally-disabled minister. The suit apparently was dismissed that same year.

But the state Attorney General's Office reached an agreement with the Beacon Hill church after disgruntled members complained that new leaders, including MacKenzie, pushed out old members and stacked church boards with cronies to try to cash in on church assets.

Among the agreement's terms were that the church would hire an independent chief financial officer and that the church would let the attorney general review any expense or sale of church property worth more than $10,000.

Later in 2004, MacKenzie pleaded guilty in state court to swindling a 73-year-old woman out of her life savings, saying he didn't want to "roll the dice" with a jury. The woman had met MacKenzie while recovering from a stroke, and had hired him to look for her son who disappeared in the Cayman Islands, even though authorities had told her that her son committed suicide.

Phyllis Karas, the Boston University adjunct professor who helped MacKenzie write the book "Street Soldier: My Life as an Enforcer for Whitey Bulger and the Boston Irish Mob," said Wednesday that she hasn't had contact with him in years but was saddened to hear of his arrest.

"I thought that being with the church was such a good thing for him," she said.

While Karas said MacKenzie stands innocent until proven guilty, she added: "I was fooled into thinking his relationship with the church had changed him into something better ... He seemed to be doing all the right things."

http://mandispfd.soup.io/post/315317292/Vegan-Cooking-for-Carnivores-Over-125-Recipes
http://coriytiu.skyrock.com/3164110306-Remembering-Memphis-e-book-downloads.html
http://marilynbnci.soup.io/post/315317294/Downloads-The-Flower-Basket-A-Fairy-Tale
http://lornakqo.skyrock.com/3164110310-Download-Granada-and-Eastern-Andalucia-Travels-in-Spain-book.html
http://terrydsui.orbs.com/
http://conradilpr.orbs.com/micromechatronics+uchino+book
http://mopusway.jimdo.com/2013/05/24/moleskine-2013-12-month-daily-planner-black-soft-cover-large-moleskine-diaries-ebook/
http://fiwalisu.jimdo.com/2013/05/25/material-witness-a-shipshewana-amish-mystery-ebook/
http://friendfeed.com/uooesze/31031b22/reprint-1951-yearbook-west-high-school
http://en.netlog.com/mitchelhightower/blog/blogid=24005487
http://en.netlog.com/georgettebrabham/blog/blogid=24005488
http://twitpic.com/csxxjj
http://mabelriqn.orbs.com/lawful+revolution%3A+louis+kossuth+an
http://augustacuk.skyrock.com/3164110348-Download-DSP-Filter-Cookbook-Electronics-Cookbook-Series-book.html
http://maisieiunr.skyrock.com/3164110346-Summer-Nights-Fool-s-Gold-Series-online.html
http://sadieoaeb.skyrock.com/3164110342-The-Parthenon-in-Nashville-download.html
http://augustacuk.skyrock.com/3164110344-The-Santa-Exclusive-A-Christmas-Novella-download.html
http://jazminiep.orbs.com/ghostly+tales+from+america%27s+jails

Save More for College Education With a 5

When it comes to paying for your child's college education, do you feel prepared? Putting money aside in a regular savings account likely won't help you reach your goals the same way other savings vehicles can, like a 529 plan - an account specifically designed to encourage .

Curious what a 529 plan is and how it works? A 529 plan is similar to a 401(k) plan, but whereas the latter type of account is used to build your nest egg, the former is used to pay for college expenses.

However, the tax advantages of a 529 plan are similar to a Roth investment retirement account since you pay federal income tax on your contributions, but then the earnings from your investments grow tax-free.

There are two types of 529 college savings plans: the prepaid plan and the savings plan.

529 college prepaid plan. With the 529 prepaid plan, you purchase tuition credits in your state's university system at current tuition rates. This means your child is protected against futuredespite the likely increase in inflation. However, before opening a 529 prepaid plan, make sure your child plans to attend the school for which you are purchasing tuition credits to ensure the investment doesn't go to waste.

529 college savings plan. The 529 savings plan is a tax-advantaged account that allows you to accumulate assets that can be used toward any accredited college or vocational school in the United States. The funds can be used to pay for more than just tuition costs, including textbooks and other education-related fees.

Contribution limits. The annual maximum contribution allowed per person to either plan is $14,000, and if you are married, your spouse can contribute an additional $14,000 each year for a total of $28,000. Each spouse is also allowed to make a one-time contribution of $70,000 (five years worth of annual maximum contributions), but parents who opt for this will have to wait six years before they can start contributing again.

The total maximum contribution allowed on a 529 plan is $360,000 (market value) for each beneficiary. However, your assets can grow beyond that amount through .

Risk level and investment options. With a 529 savings plan, depending on the state, you can choose between several investment options based on factors such as your child's age, your asset allocation preference and . You can also decide to invest your money in a portfolio of stocks, bonds and/or money market funds. However, don't assume your state's plan is the best option, as not all states offer tax deductions. If that's the case, you may want to open an account in another state with options that better suite your child's needs.

For a list of theby state residency, see NerdWallet Investing's comparison of the top accounts.

Neda Jafarzadeh is a financial analyst at NerdWallet Investing, a financial literacy organization that helps investors select better mutual funds, figure outand make smarter investment decisions overall.

http://toneytbu.orbs.com/e-mail+software+may+be+scam.%28agency+t
http://en.netlog.com/esperanzawendel/blog/blogid=23838877
http://cameliamee.skyrock.com/3163460630-The-Golden-Ball-and-Other-Stories-downloads.html
http://en.netlog.com/cordellmazza/blog/blogid=23838881
http://yatiheth.jimdo.com/2013/05/21/download-corrosion-conference-and-expo-corrosion-2007-e-book/
http://en.netlog.com/joellamund/blog/blogid=23838884
http://friendfeed.com/cysuoav/48d1a13d/downloads-legal-aspects-of-financial-services
http://yeseniayubrc.webs.com/apps/blog/show/26476985
http://friendfeed.com/abuoiu/0dcd5198/john-mcloughlin-father-of-oregon-book
http://ladonnaaasy.soup.io/post/314671358/Download-ACP-Medical-Terminology-Preset-Template-ebook
http://corrinneaoba.skyrock.com/3163460650-Downloads-A-Tax-Globalist-Essays-in-Honour-of-Maarten-J-Ellis-ebook.html

Psychiatrists unveil their long-awaited

By Sharon Begley

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The long-awaited, controversial new edition of the bible of psychiatry can be characterized by many numbers: its 947 pages, its $199 price tag, its more than 300 maladies (from "dependent personality disorder" and "voyeuristic disorder" to "delayed ejaculation," "kleptomania" and "intermittent explosive disorder"), each limning the potential woes of being human.

But to the psychiatrist who shepherded the tortuous creation of the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders," perhaps the single most important number is the "5" in its title: This is the DSM-5, not the DSM-V.

That may seem like a cosmetic change, but the American Psychiatric Association, which will release the book on Saturday at its annual meeting, decided to use Arabic instead of Roman numerals because "we want it to be a living document," said Dr David Kupfer of the University of Pittsburgh, the chairman of the task force that produced the DSM-5. Rather than waiting another generation to revise the manual - the DSM-IV was published in 1994 - psychiatrists will regularly update it with, for example, findings from genetics and neuroscience, labeling the revisions DSM-5.1 and DSM-5.2 and so on.

"We used '5' because V.0 and V.1 just don't look good," said Kupfer.

The fact that the world's most powerful psychiatrists (their decisions determine what counts as a mental disorder, and thus what insurers cover and which children receive special services in school) are already building in ways to change the manual is commendable, even its critics say.

But it is also emblematic of the DSM-5's failures, they argue, which include turning normal human behavior and feelings into mental illnesses, and expanding the criteria for disorders until an astonishing one in four U.S. adults has a diagnosable mental illness every year - and even more do over a lifetime.

The latest revision began in 1999 with high hopes for putting mental illness on a scientific footing, using neuroscience in particular to tell the difference between, say, normal sadness and major depression.

That reflected persistent criticism that "drawing a line between sickness and disease is a special problem in psychiatry," said psychotherapist Gary Greenberg, who participated in the "field trials" that tested the DSM-5's proposed diagnostic criteria before they made the final cut. "We don't have blood tests or other objective criteria to distinguish mental sickness from health. So you have a set of criteria that are very common, which means the potential for many people being diagnosed as mentally ill when they're not."

STILL WAITING FOR SCIENCE

The 1,500 experts who contributed to the DSM-5 would have liked nothing better than to base diagnoses on genetics or neuroscience, rather than on subjective judgment and lists of mostly self-reported symptoms such as fear of acting "in a way that will be negatively evaluated" (social anxiety disorder) or approaching and interacting "with unfamiliar adults" (disinhibited social engagement disorder in children).

"It would be great if we had been able to have a paradigmatic shift" by basing the diagnosis of mental illness on biology, as the APA hoped to when it began the DSM-5 process, said Dr Jeffrey Lieberman, chairman of psychiatry at Columbia University and president-elect of the APA.

But the science did not arrive in time. "The DSM can only reflect the research we have," said Lieberman." With rare exceptions such as narcolepsy, which can be diagnosed by testing cerebrospinal fluid, there are no objective biological measures for mental illness.

This lack of scientific rigor led the nation's leading mental health official to attack the DSM-5 for a "lack of validity," as Dr Thomas Insel, director of the National Institute of Mental Health, said in a blog post late last month.

The manual bases diagnoses on symptoms, he noted, but "symptoms alone rarely indicate the best choice of treatment." Allergies and flu share some symptoms, for instance, but no doctor would try to treat flu with an antihistamine.

"Patients with mental disorders deserve better," said Insel, who announced that "NIMH will be re-orienting its research away from DSM categories."

Pittsburgh's Kupfer shrugged off this attack. "NIMH expressed that a couple of years ago," he said. "It would be a mistake to reify the DSM for research purposes."

"Reification" has become a buzzword among the DSM's critics. In this context, it means "taking a concept and turning it into a reality," said Greenberg, whose new book, "The Book of Woe: The DSM and the Unmaking of Psychiatry" argues that the manual and the process behind it are hopelessly and dangerously flawed. "The categories are not reliable in a biological sense."

That can cause harm to people who are labeled "mentally ill" when all they have is a variation of normal human behavior, said Greenberg. "The sphere of normality has to have room for some distress, which is part of being human."

On a practical level, "once you have a diagnosis in your medical record you can have trouble getting insurance or a security clearance, and it changes how you think of yourself," said Greenberg.

BLACK-BOX WARNING

Changes that make it easier to qualify as mentally ill - fewer symptoms, lasting for a shorter time - have drawn the most impassioned criticism of the DSM-5. Dr Allen Frances, the psychiatrist who led the development of the last DSM and who has emerged as the new one's fiercest and most eminent critic, warns of a "hyperinflation" of diagnoses and calls for "a black-box warning" in the dozen or so most controversial changes, much like the black-box warning that regulators require on the labels of potentially dangerous drugs.

The black box, he said in a 2012 essay, would indicate the risks of calling people who engage in binge eating, for instance, or who grieve a dead child mentally ill, and would serve as "an admission that the change is a hypothesis," not a scientific fact.

The new DSM does not include more disorders than its predecessor, said Lieberman, "and it shouldn't increase the number of people who warrant a diagnosis of mental illness."

The changes it does make, however, could have far-reaching consequences.

It classifies compulsive gambling as an addiction, the first behavior to be so categorized. That could make it easier for pathological gamblers to get help, said Jeff Beck of the New Jersey Council on Compulsive Gambling and a recovering gambling addict.

The new manual also breaks out compulsive hoarding from obsessive-compulsive disorder and makes it a stand-alone disorder. That should tell clinicians that treatments that work in OCD are not the best way to treat hoarders, said psychologist Randy Frost of Smith College, who has developed a unique therapy for hoarding.

One of the more controversial changes was to eliminate the previous DSM's "bereavement exclusion" for depression. Now, if a father grieves for a murdered child for more than a couple of weeks, he is mentally ill. A footnote in the DSM-5 explains that "the inability to anticipate happiness or pleasure" in such a situation is a diagnostic criterion for the mental disorder of depression.

To some, this smacks of pathologizing a normal, understandable human reaction. "This completely leaves the person out of the equation and turns people into patients," said psychotherapist Eric Maisel, a critic of the DSM. "The DSM claims that an unwanted, distressing feeling is a sign of a disorder rather than being just a feeling, and it isn't at all interested in whether your circumstances could have caused those feelings."

It is important to consider circumstances, he said, because if someone experiences deep anxiety as a result of losing her job, becoming ill or facing foreclosure, "the remedy shouldn't be a pill," the usual outcome of a diagnosis of "generalized anxiety disorder."

The DSM-5 will likely reduce diagnoses of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). It eliminated Asperger's syndrome and tightened the ASD criteria.

While no one wants to see children incorrectly labeled, said Katie Weisman of the patient advocacy group Safe Minds, "children who were borderline cases under the previous DSM now won't get a diagnosis, which means they won't be eligible" for early, intensive behavior therapy - or won't have it paid for by insurance.

A mother of triplets on the autism spectrum, Weisman says "I'm not sure my boys would be where they are today" - in regular school classrooms, not special education - "without these services."

Whether the critics' fears come true will become clear only once psychiatrists, psychologists and even primary-care providers - who write the majority of prescriptions for drugs to treat mental illness - begin using the new DSM. "We're trying to establish accurate and reliable guidelines, and you can't completely control how they're applied," said Columbia's Lieberman. "The problem is not with the instrument but with the way it's used."

(Reporting by Sharon Begley; Editing by Douglas Royalty)

http://friendfeed.com/evordzp/a46bfd91/thomas-aquinas-spiritual-master-crossroad
http://georgecvie.orbs.com/noguchi+in+paris%3A+the+unesco+garden
http://beckyovbn.soup.io/post/314720174/The-Pains-and-Pleasures-of-Love-and
<a href="and" apparatuses for massage, psychological aptitude-testing, ozone therapy, oxygen ... and artificial respiration in asia>and Apparatuses for Massage, Psychological Aptitude-Testing, Ozone Therapy, Oxygen ...
Brain Science Upstages DSM-V, So-Called

Since the 1970s, the , has reigned as the so-called "bible" of psychiatry. But now, with the May 22 release of its fifth edition, the DSM-5 is losing some of the support of its faithful.

For the first time, the , the world's largest mental health research institute, has shifted its funding support away from the DSM, citing a "lack of validity" and diagnoses based on "clusters of clinical symptoms, not any objective laboratory measure."

The DSM-5 includes a plethora of new diagnoses, some of which have been contentious: It removesfrom a larger umbrella of autism spectrum disorders and creates new conditions like social anxiety disorder and , which critics say could label patients who are physically sick as mentally ill.

"Patients with mental disorders deserve better,"

Instead, NIMH will put more of its research dollars into a new classification system, the , to incorporate genetics, imaging and cognitive science that focus more on neurological systems than just a collection of symptoms.

According to Insel, the overriding premise of the 18 months of work developing the RDoC is that the brain is the "alleged seat and cause of psychiatric suffering."

RDoC would classify psychopathology based on observable behavior and neurobiological measures.

The shift comes after President Obama proposed the , a $100 million brain-mapping project designed to promote American innovation and job growth while finding ways to treat and cure diseases such as Alzheimer's and brain damage from strokes.

The RDoC assumes that mental disorders are "biological disorders involving brain circuits that implicate specific domains of cognition, emotion or behavior. It's aim in mapping these circuits is to yield "better targets for treatment," according to Insel.

But , chairman of the 's (APA) DSM-5 task force, responded to Insel's blog post, saying that the decades-long search for biomarkers associated with mental illness remains, "disappointingly distant. ... We're still waiting."

The DSM revisions are the first in 20 years, a "generation" for clinicians, patients and their families, he said. Numerous conditions have been renamed or recategorized and the 1,000-page manual is now electronic version with references and hyperlinks.

"It is important to understand that it is only a guidebook to help clinicians diagnose behaviors and symptoms, not a treatment guide or research manual," said Kupfer. "I think we need to put that in perspective. ... It's not what many people call the Bible or the 10 Commandments."

The DSM-5 task force included 160 experts from around the world, as well as 400 research advisors. The book went public three times for input on language.

"We are very proud of that," said Kupfer.

Disorders are framed in context of age, gender and cultural expectations.

The revised manual also looks at "commonalities" that may exist between conditions like bipolar disorder, psychosis and schizophrenia, as "clues to early intervention," said Kupfer.

"We laid disorder chapters next to each other so, going forward, we might find genetic or cognitive neuroscience," he said.

The manual also tries to do more to measure the severity of certain disorders.

"We know that in clinical depression, for example, one size does not fit all," he said.

called the funding cuts to DSM-5 research in favor of RDoC, a "humiliating blow to the APA."

But , coordinator of the RDoC project and director of the division of adult transitional research at NIMH, said research will continue in both camps.

"Science is changing for the future, and it's not at all a slap to the APA," he said. "We have cordial relations with people who developed the DSM and we have a shared interest in psychiatric diagnosis. It still remains the best instrument for diagnosing medical disorders today and to direct people to effective treatment."

But, he said, the way scientists are looking at mental illness is a "real shift" from the past.

Just as doctors can measure blood pressure, brain researchers hope in the future to have similar tools to measure the circuitry of the brain, which governs so much of behavior. The weakness of the DSM-5 is that it looks at a collection of symptoms, rather than the brain activity behind it.

A good example is the way in which anxiety disorders are classified in a group -- ones like post-traumatic stress disorder [PTSD], specific phobias, agoraphobia, according to Cuthbert. The DSM "assumes" they are all fear disorders. But brain research has found that "the more overall distress and misery" [patients] report, the more blunted their fear activity [in the brain].

Patients with PTSD who've had a single traumatic event show the biggest fear response of all groups, he said.

"However," he added, "if you look at patients with multiple traumas, they showed a smaller fear reaction -- almost like no fear at all."

"We need a reliable measure to see if one patient's fear is an elevated or blunted response before we look at groups of patients and assume everyone in the group has the same things wrong with them," said Cuthbert.

Some have accused the RDoC supporters of being interested only in drug therapies for brain disorders but, Cuthbert said, "That's not necessarily true. We are also interested in behavior therapy and a better understanding of how circuits produce behavior so we can develop treatments."

The APA's Kupfer said that the DSM-5will work as a complementary diagnostic guide to the RDoC. But, he added, brain science has so far not produced the treatment results that many individual patients are waiting for.

"I went into psychiatry believing, like other areas of medicine, that we would have much better ways of treating those chronic disorders that attracted me in the first place," said Kupfer. "But I am beginning to be more impatient, and that is the key. I can't say [to individual patients], 'Help is on its way -- just tough it out for 10 years.' It's just not fair."

Despite that, he said, he has high hopes for improving care for mental health patients.

"We never want to think our children or grandchildren will only have the same possibility of treatment and interventions that we have today."

Q and A: APA on Changes in the DSM-5
ADHD: Will DSM-5's changes increase the prevalence of ADHD among teens and adults?

APA: Revisions to ADHD criteria were aimed at helping clinicians more precisely recognize the symptoms of individuals with ADHD to facilitate the right care for the right person. No one should ever be diagnosed without a careful, comprehensive assessment, and no medication should be prescribed without equal vigilance.

Autism Spectrum Disorders: Will DSM-5's changes to autism result in a loss of services for many people?

APA: Anyone accurately diagnosed with autistic disorder, Asperger's disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder, or pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified using DSM-IV should still meet the criteria for ASD or another diagnosis using DSM-5.

Bereavement Exclusion: Does DSM-5 turn normal grief into a mental illness?

APA: No. Removing the bereavement exclusion helps prevent major depression from being overlooked and facilitates the possibility of appropriate treatment, including therapy or other interventions. While grief and depression share some features like intense sadness and withdrawal from customary activities, grief and depression are also different in important aspects. DSM-5 includes language in the criteria and text for MDD to help distinguish between normal bereavement and a mental disorder.

Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder: Does DSM-5's disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD) turn temper tantrums into a mental illness?

APA: The symptoms of DMDD go beyond describing temperamental children to describing those with clinically significant severe mood and behavioral dysregulation and -- unlike pediatric bipolar disorder -- irritability that is chronic rather than episodic. The threshold for DMDD is high and children must meet several diagnostic criteria. Current diagnostic guidelines do not provide an appropriate diagnosis for these children resulting in misdiagnosis. These criteria clarify the nature of episodic versus non-episodic irritability and promote accurate and consistent diagnosis for these children.

Binge Eating Disorder: Does binge eating disorder pathologize overeating?

APA: Binge eating disorder is much less common and far more severe than overeating. It is associated with significant physical and psychological problems. People with binge eating disorder tend to have a higher co-morbidity of mood and anxiety disorders and sometimes have a lower quality of life.

Gender Dysphoria: Why is gender dysphoria being included in DSM-5?

APA: Gender dysphoria replaces the diagnostic name "gender identity disorder" and makes other important clarifications in the criteria to respect the patient and ensuring access to care. The addition of a post-transition specifier for people who are living full-time as the desired gender (with or without legal sanction of the gender change) ensures treatment access for individuals who continue to undergo hormone therapy, related surgery, or psychotherapy or counseling to support their gender transition. Replacing "disorder" with "dysphoria" in the diagnostic label is not only more appropriate and consistent with familiar clinical sexology terminology; it also removes the connotation that the patient is "disordered" because of their gender nonconformity.

Hoarding Disorder: Has hoarding been added to DSM-5? Why?

APA: Research shows that hoarding is a distinct disorder. Using DSM-IV, individuals with pathological hoarding behaviors could receive a diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, anxiety disorder not otherwise specified or no diagnosis at all, since many severe cases of hoarding are not accompanied by obsessive or compulsive behavior. Creating a unique diagnosis in DSM-5 will increase public awareness, improve identification of cases, and stimulate both research and the development of specific treatments for hoarding disorder.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: What is changing in regards to post-traumatic stress disorder?

APA: PTSD will be included in a new chapter in DSM-5 on Trauma- and Stressor-Related Disorders. Compared to DSM-IV, the diagnostic criteria for DSM-5 draw a clearer line when detailing what constitutes a traumatic event. Sexual assault is specifically included, for example, as is a recurring exposure that could apply to police officers or first responders. DSM-5 pays more attention to the behavioral symptoms that accompany PTSD and proposes four distinct diagnostic clusters instead of three. They are described as re-experiencing, avoidance, negative cognitions and mood, and arousal.

Social Anxiety Disorder: Isn't social anxiety disorder just shyness?

APA: No. Social anxiety disorder is about more than just shyness and can be considerably disabling. A diagnosis requires that a person's fear or anxiety be out of proportion -- in frequency and/or duration -- to the actual situation. The symptoms must be persistent, lasting six months or longer. In DSM-IV, the time frame was required only for children; DSM-5 expands this criterion to include adults as well. The minimum symptom period reduces the possibility that an individual is experiencing only transient or temporary fear.

Somatic Symptom Disorder: Will DSM-5's somatic symptom disorder cause medical problems to be missed or be mislabeled as mental disorders?

APA: DSM-5 criteria encourage clinicians to more comprehensively consider the patient's behaviors, thoughts, and feelings, rather than focus primarily on whether or not the presenting physical symptoms can be medically explained. Most patients with medical disorders are not likely to have the dysfunctional thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that characterize SSD. However, a patient may have both medically explained symptoms from a non-psychiatric medical disorder as well as excessive thoughts or worries about their symptoms that result in clinically significant distress or impairment. Therefore, an SSD diagnosis does not mean that a non-psychiatric medical disorder is not present and cannot be diagnosed.

http://melindauykz.skyrock.com/3163056036-Download-Dead-Man-s-Tattoo-ebook.html
http://frankietbm.skyrock.com/3163056032-Taking-Charge-of-Your-Career-Direction-Career-Planning-Guide-Book-1.html
http://lynnetteriupti.webs.com/apps/blog/show/26443027
http://jojocoup.jimdo.com/2013/05/20/daddy-dates-four-daughters-one-clueless-dad-and-his-quest-to-win-their-hearts-the-road-map-for-any-dad-to-raise-a-strong-and-confident-daughter-book-downloads/
http://mejocran.jimdo.com/2013/05/20/dissent-dark-elves-4-read-online/
http://friendfeed.com/vadfm/ff75b6d9/downloads-can-jokes-bring-down-governments
http://friendfeed.com/cysuoav/aceb49cd/downloads-raw-edges-quilts-of-love-series-e-book
http://olinfcdi.skyrock.com/3163056090-LIQUID-CRYSTAL-DISPLAYS-Professional-Performance-In-17-inch-Desktops.html
http://twitpic.com/crw572
http://en.netlog.com/bryonmcquaig/blog/blogid=23750759
http://en.netlog.com/pansycouch/blog/blogid=23750760
http://clairbcay.orbs.com/applied+illumination+engineering%2C+third

Tennis-Evert hurt by Connors' revelation

By Pritha Sarkar

LONDON, May 4 (Reuters) - Tennis great Chris Evert has hit out at her former fiance Jimmy Connors for hinting that their relationship ended in the 1970s after she had an abortion against his wishes.

"In his book, Jimmy Connors has written about a time in our relationship that was very personal and emotionally painful," Evert said in a statement released to Reuters on Saturday through her agent Lawrence Frankopan at StarWing Sports.

"I am extremely disappointed that he used the book to misrepresent a private matter that took place 40 years ago and made it public, without my knowledge. I hope everyone can understand that I have no further comment."

Evert, who won 18 grand slam titles, and eight-times major champion Connors were the golden couple of tennis when they dated during the 1970s. Both won the Wimbledon singles titles in 1974 and were due to get married later that year.

When they called off their wedding, little was known about the reasons behind it.

However, Connors shed light on the issues that led to the breakdown of their relationship in his memoir "The Outsider", extracts of which were quoted in the American media this week.

"An issue had arisen as a result of youthful passion, and a decision had to be made as a couple. Chrissie called to say she was coming out to LA to take care of the 'issue'," Connors wrote in his book.

"I was perfectly happy to let nature take its course and accept responsibility for what was to come."

Evert, raised a Catholic, was 19 at the time.

Connors added in his book: "Chrissie, however, had already made up her mind that the timing was bad and too much was riding on her future. She asked me to handle the details.

He wrote that his response was: "'Well, thanks for letting me know. Since I don't have any say in the matter, then I guess I am just here to help.'

"It was a horrible feeling, but I knew it was over. Getting married wasn't going to be good for either of us."

With Connors deciding they were too young to get married, he wrote that her reply was: "OK if that's what you think. I've got a match tomorrow. Not a problem."
U.S. 'Idol' winner shines light on South

By Harriet McLeod

CHARLESTON, South Carolina (Reuters) - "American Idol" winner Candice Glover, whose powerful voice clinched the title of the popular TV singing show, comes from a sea island culture made up of descendants of West African slaves.

"I speak another language," she said during the Fox TV show. "It's called Geechee."

Some 14.2 million TV viewers tuned in to watch Glover beat Kree Harrison to win the season 12 "American Idol" crown on Thursday.

Glover, 23, is a native of rural St. Helena Island in the coastal South Carolina Lowcountry. The island is part of a new national heritage corridor to preserve and promote the unique African culture and language called Gullah Geechee that survived on the isolated sea islands of South Carolina and Georgia for centuries.

"When she said that, I stood up in my living room and applauded," said Ron Daise, commission chairman of the corridor that also includes parts of North Carolina and Florida. "There's a rootedness about her spirit."

The Gullah Geechee language is a mix of West African dialects and English. The Glover family does not speak the language as well as older generations, Glover's mother, Carole, said in an interview this week.

But she added that her daughter's revelation made residents of St. Helena "proud and happy."

In April, Daise wrote Glover a congratulatory letter that ended in Gullah: "We stan op an clap clap clap clap cuz oona da one a we! A kno de Lawd done lay E han pon oona."

The oldest of seven children, Glover was 4 years old and singing solos in church when her parents first noticed her talent. When she was 8, she earned a standing ovation.

"She always got solos because, you know, she has the voice to take us there, into worship," her mother said. "It came from God, that's what I believe."

With no formal training, Candice entered talent shows, made YouTube videos in her living room and auditioned for "American Idol" twice and was cut. She was working at a beach resort when she made it onto the show with her third try.

Supporters on St. Helena Island sold T-shirts and pins to send Glover's parents to California to watch her perform. Her mother is a former daycare worker, and her father, John, is a truck driver. Bars in the nearby city of Beaufort created and served Candy Cane Martinis for "Idol" parties.

Governor Nikki Haley proclaimed May 4, Glover's homecoming day from the show, "Candice Glover Day" statewide. A riverfront parade down streets featured a marching band and floats.

"She cried so much during that day, all through the parade she cried," her mother said. "Because this is a little country girl and this is her dream."

Glover's mother said she thought a high point of the "American Idol" season was her daughter's performance of "You've Changed," the jazz song made famous by Billie Holiday.

"My parents have always taught me to be humble in everything that you do and everybody has to start at the bottom," Glover told a South Carolina television station.

Asked what goes through her mind before a performance, she said, "the lyrics."

She starts a 40-city national tour, with 10 other "Idol" finalists, on June 29.

(Editing by Patricia Reaney, Jackie Frank and Matthew Lewis)

http://laylaanzbv.webs.com/apps/blog/show/26443355
http://twitpic.com/crw7si
http://en.netlog.com/albertaday/blog/blogid=23751105
http://kattieodq.skyrock.com/3163058964-Downloads-The-2009-Import-and-Export-Market-for-Wristwatches-with.html
http://en.netlog.com/kareenler/blog/blogid=23751107
http://yunham.soup.io/post/314318806/Downloads-CFA-Notes-Level-1-ebook
http://diannul.orbs.com/caught+up+into+paradise+read+online
http://friendfeed.com/ayvyoca/8b86a821/it-spring-hello-reader-level-2-ebook-downloads
http://golehunt.jimdo.com/2013/05/20/investment-university-s-profit-from-uranium-downloads/
http://friendfeed.com/aanadu/16b5552d/food-movements-unite-strategies-to-transform
http://mauricioymba.skyrock.com/3163058984-Downloads-Range-Management-McGraw-Hill-series-in-forest-resources-book.html
http://jiyolass.jimdo.com/2013/05/20/abiotic-stress-adaptation-in-plants-physiological-molecular-and-genomic-foundation-book-downloads/
http://ronnybii.skyrock.com/3163058988-Download-The-kingdom-in-history-and-prophecy.html

Shots fired at Cannes film festival, act

By Matthias Galante

CANNES, France (Reuters) - A man was arrested at the Cannes film festival on Friday after firing a starting pistol during a live TV broadcast on the palm-lined waterfront, sending actors Christoph Waltz and Daniel Auteuil running for cover.

French TV station Canal+ was interviewing Austria's Oscar-winning Waltz and French actor Auteuil live on its nightly news show from a beach-front set before a crowd of spectators when a man fired two shots into the air.

"The bodyguards jumped over the barriers into the crowd and pulled him to the ground. The police arrived and told everyone to run because there was a grenade in his hand," witness Arthur Laiguesse told Reuters.

Police arrested the man at the scene and found he was carrying a dummy grenade and a knife, authorities said.

"It really appears to be a crazy guy," said a police source.

After the man was taken away, the show's producers told the crowd the program would continue: "The show must go on."

Waltz, who has won two best supporting actor Oscars for "Django Unchained" and "Inglourious Basterds", and Auteuil, both of whom are serving on the Cannes jury, returned to the set.

The shooting was the second security incident on day three of the 12-day festival, the world's largest cinema showcase that attracts thousands of actors, directors, film executives, journalists and fans.

A police source said $1.4 million worth of Chopard jewellery intended to adorn movie stars had been stolen from a room at the Suite Novotel hotel overnight on Thursday.

But Chopard said the value had been exaggerated and the items were not for actresses to use, declining to give further details.

(Reporting by Matthias Galante; Writing by Alexandria Sage and Belinda Goldsmith; editing by Mike Collett-White)

http://britneyutkf.skyrock.com/3163008744-Download-Locally-finite-groups.html
http://eulaliaooq.orbs.com/downloads+fell%27s++point+++%28md%29++%28imag
http://en.netlog.com/beatricebarton/blog/blogid=23734624
http://santiagobi.orbs.com/taxi+%28bloomsbury+qatar+foundation%29+dow
http://en.netlog.com/georgiabeacham/blog/blogid=23734627
http://en.netlog.com/patricaposton/blog/blogid=23734626
http://kifukali.jimdo.com/2013/05/19/on-teaching-and-learning-putting-the-principles-and-practices-of-dialogue-education-into-action-ebook-downloads/
http://shenitaqou.soup.io/post/314185569/Berkeley-Prime-Crime-Book-review-An-article
http://twanaat.orbs.com/photographing+nudes
http://twitpic.com/crtvkj
http://friendfeed.com/cqetdo/3d4bcd85/james-cook-explorers-of-new-worlds-book
http://friendfeed.com/pkiddie/6d1aaf7a/downloads-coordination-languages-and-models
http://friendfeed.com/haaui/2f2e20ce/downloads-encouragement-for-today-pastors
http://dudleyqfap.orbs.com/florida%27s+fabled+inns+e-book
http://wadedadues.webs.com/apps/blog/show/26437621
http://joycefioe.soup.io/post/314185679/Download-Wild-Montana-Sky-The-Montana-Sky
http://shoshanahbto.skyrock.com/3163008766-Flatcap-s-Guide-to-Sex-ebook.html

Jewels stolen in Cannes, Chopard says no

CANNES, France (Reuters) - Chopard jewelry worth $1.4 million intended to adorn movie stars at the Cannes film festival has been stolen, a police source said on Friday, but the company said the value had been exaggerated and the items were not for actresses to use.

According to the source, who declined to be named because he was not authorized to discuss the case with the press, the jewels were in the safe of a room rented by an employee of the luxury jeweler, which is also a Cannes sponsor.

"The jeweler hasn't yet furnished details of what exactly was stolen," the source said.

Later in the day, Chopard said in a statement that the value of the jewels stolen was not as high as had been reported and that they were not "part of the collection destined to be used by actresses" during the festival.

The Cannes film festival, the world's largest, draws thousands of movie stars, industry executives and journalists to the fabled resort on the Mediterranean.

Jewelers and fashion houses use the annual event as a promotional showcase, lending gowns and accessories to celebrities who are photographed on the famed red carpet and at parties along the palm-lined Croisette waterfront.

Since the festival opened on Wednesday, pop star Lana Del Rey and former supermodel Cindy Crawford, among others, have chosen Chopard jewels for their red carpet appearances.

The incident at the Suite Novotel four-star hotel in central Cannes - opposite a municipal police station - took place on the night of Thursday to Friday.

The entire safe was removed from the wall and taken from the room, where someone entered without either forcing the door or using the magnetic key card, the police source said.

The hotel declined to comment.

In an ironic twist, Sofia Coppola's new movie "The Bling Ring", about a gang of celebrity-obsessed teens who break into stars' homes to steal their possessions, premiered at Cannes on Thursday evening.

(Reporting by Matthias Galante;
Senator: Obama should 'condemn' IRS targ

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Republicans say the Internal Revenue Service's targeting of conservative political groups was "chilling", and at least one Republican senator called on President Barack Obama to "personally condemn" the actions.

The IRS, an independent agency in the Treasury Department, has already apologized for scrutinizing the tax-exempt status of groups with conservative titles such as "Tea Party" or "Patriot" in their names. And White House spokesman Jay Carney said Friday it was wrong.

But Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said Sunday she was disappointed that Obama "hasn't personally condemned this." The president, Collins said, "needs to make crystal clear that this is totally unacceptable."

Collins and other Republicans challenged the tax agency's claim that the practice was initiated by low-level workers.

"I just don't buy that this was a couple of rogue IRS employees," said Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine. "After all, groups with 'progressive' in their names were not targeted similarly."

If it were just a small number of employees, she said, "then you would think that the high-level IRS supervisors would have rushed to make this public, fired the employees involved, apologized to the American people and informed Congress. None of that happened in a timely way."

The IRS said Friday that it was sorry for what it called the "inappropriate" targeting of the conservative groups during the 2012 election to see if they were violating their tax-exempt status. The agency blamed low-level employees, saying no high-level officials were aware.

But according to a draft of a watchdog's report obtained Saturday by The Associated Press that seemingly contradicts public statements by the IRS commissioner, senior IRS officials knew agents were targeting tea party groups as early as 2011.

The Treasury Department's inspector general for tax administration is expected to release the results of a nearly yearlong investigation in the coming week.

Lois G. Lerner, who heads the IRS division that oversees tax-exempt organizations, said last week that the practice was initiated by low-level workers in Cincinnati and was not motivated by political bias.

But on June 29, 2011, Lerner learned at a meeting that groups were being targeted, according to the watchdog's report. At the meeting, she was told that groups with "Tea Party," ''Patriot" or "9/12 Project" in their names were being flagged for additional and often burdensome scrutiny, the report says.

The 9/12 Project is a group started by conservative TV personality Glenn Beck.

Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., said "the conclusion that the IRS came to is that they did have agents who were engaged in intimidation of political groups is as dangerous a problem" as the government can have.

He added, "This should send a chill up your spine. ... I don't know where it stops or who is involved."

Congressional Republicans already are conducting several investigations and asked for more.

"This mea culpa is not an honest one," said Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif.

After the Associated Press report, Carney said that if the inspector general "finds that there were any rules broken or that conduct of government officials did not meet the standards required of them, the president expects that swift and appropriate steps will be taken to address any misconduct."

Collins said the revelations about the nation's tax agency only contribute to "the profound distrust that the American people have in government. It is absolutely chilling that the IRS was singling out conservative groups for extra review."

The IRS' Lerner said that about 300 groups were singled out for additional review, with about one-quarter scrutinized because they had "tea party" or "patriot" somewhere in their applications.

She said 150 of the cases have been closed and no group had its tax-exempt status revoked, though some withdrew their applications.

Collins appeared on CNN's "State of the Union," Rogers was on "Fox News Sunday" and Issa spoke on NBC's "Meet the Press."

http://nelidanuonoo.webs.com/apps/blog/show/26436654
http://nestoroq.orbs.com/
http://jerripam.skyrock.com/3163000814-Downloads-Daily-Blessings-for-My-Secret-Pal-Devotions-to-Share-with.html
http://corrineiydb.skyrock.com/3163000818-Gooseberry-Patch-2010-Wall-Calendar-book-downloads.html
http://jenaelirc.soup.io/post/314151274/Connecting-Microsoft-Exchange-Server-HP-Technologies-e
http://daniellomd.soup.io/post/314151283/The-Nursing-Mothers-Problem-Solver-e-book
http://friendfeed.com/uobcvpa/e50482f8/download-ground-war-desert-storm
http://burlqcou.skyrock.com/3163000816-When-I-Left-Home-My-Story-downloads.html
http://jannaprt.skyrock.com/3163000828-The-Mounting-Threat-of-Domestic-Terrorism-Al-Qaeda-and-the-Salvadoran.html
http://jenniferosu.skyrock.com/3163000848-Downloads-The-2009-Import-and-Export-Market-for-Women-s-and-Girls.html
http://en.netlog.com/ermelindaerb/blog/blogid=23732169
http://en.netlog.com/marthalashbrook/blog/blogid=23732171
http://twitpic.com/crtgec
http://casseyeuii.skyrock.com/3163000856-Math-Wise-Hands-On-Activities-and-Investigations-for-Elementary.html
http://graigsorh.skyrock.com/3163000858-Download-Inner-Child-Cards-Workbook-Further-Exercises-and-Mystical.html
http://en.netlog.com/ashlimurrieta/blog/blogid=23732173
http://twitpic.com/crtgf4
http://en.netlog.com/cherylhuskins/blog/blogid=23732174
