Army vet receiving Medal of Honor for Af

WASHINGTON (AP) A veteran who helped "defend the indefensible" at a vulnerable Army outpost in Afghanistan received the nation's highest award for military valor Monday at a tearful White House ceremony that also honored the eight men who did not survive a Taliban attack.

President Barack Obama lauded former Staff Sgt. Clinton Romesha's bravery in fighting back an intense daylong barrage by enemy fighters. The Taliban descended on Combat Outpost Keating in the mountains near the Pakistan border at 6 a.m. on Oct. 3, 2009, shaking Romesha out of his bed into what Obama said has been called one of the most intense battles of the war in Afghanistan.

The Americans were outmanned 53 to more than 300, but most survived against those odds. "These men were outnumbered, outgunned, and almost overrun," Obama said.

Romesha, 31, listened to the commendation while fighting back tears, sometimes unsuccessfully, the families of his fallen comrades sitting together and crying near the back of his East Room audience. Other troops who fought that day also watched as the president placed the medal hanging from a blue ribbon around Romesha's neck.

"I'm feeling conflicted with this medal I now wear," Romesha told reporters outside the West Wing after the ceremony. "The joy comes from recognition for us doing our jobs as soldiers on distant battlefields, but is countered by the constant reminder of the loss of our battle buddies, my battle buddies, my soldiers, my friends."

Eight U.S. soldiers were killed in the fighting and other 22 wounded, including Romesha, who was peppered with shrapnel from a rocket-propelled grenade in the hip, arm and neck. But he fought through his wounds to help lead other soldiers to safety, defend the burning camp from encroaching Taliban fighters, personally taking out at least 10, and retrieve the bodies of the fallen Americans.

Romesha also served twice in Iraq and is the fourth living Medal of Honor recipient for actions in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Romesha grew up in the small town of Lake City, Calif., and deployed out of Fort Carson, Colo., fulfilling a tradition of military service shared by his grandfather, his father and his brothers. He now lives in Minot, N.D., with his wife and three children and works in the oil fields.

His 1 -year-old son, Colin, in a tiny little suit and tie, got the somber ceremony off to a light start just before his father and the president entered the room. He scrambled behind the podium and played peek-a-boo with the audience before one of the president's military aides picked him off the stage and put him back into his mother's arms.

Obama described Keating as among the most remote outposts in Afghanistan, a collection of concrete and plywood buildings among trenches and sandbags at the bottom of a steep valley. The president said a later investigation found the terrain "gave ideal cover for insurgents to attack" and left the outpost "tactically indefensible."

"Our troops should not ever be put in a position where they have to defend the indefensible," Obama said. "That's what these soldiers did for each other in sacrifice driven by pure love."

___

Follow Nedra Pickler on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/nedrapickler

http://en.netlog.com/libbydougherty/blog/blogid=19677863
http://aleciaaonuor.webs.com/apps/blog/show/24797171
http://blog.yahoo.com/_UN5M2EBH4WVJLMSMCSBEVT3544/articles/1099541
http://voyatalc.blog.com/2013/03/15/reprint-the-industries-of-buffalo-a-racuteesumacutee-of-the-mercantile-and-manufacturing-progress-of-the-queen-city-of-the-lakes-together-with-a-condensed-summary-of-her-material-development/
http://eloisofrzpb.webs.com/apps/blog/show/24797172
http://blogs.rediff.com/emmettuyed/2013/03/17/downloads-molecular-scatering-physical-and-chemical-applications-e-book/
http://blogs.rediff.com/felishadvu/2013/03/17/angora-goats-a-country-girls-guide-country-girls-guides-online/
http://blog.yahoo.com/_HP67RHRADJUDB6H5DIWDHZ5LL4/articles/1001172
http://merlynebiq.guildomatic.com/news/show/737372
http://tonianapb.blog.fc2.com/blog-entry-12.html
http://blog.yahoo.com/_T2W3V2AD4EF5APKEOCDYDTGIIU/articles/1044797
http://hobewits.blogminister.com/The-first-blog-b1/Obama-s-Change-Communism-in-America-ebook-downloads-b1-p4.htm

Koreas' rhetoric no match for surreal ca

IMJINGAK, South Korea (AP) Busloads of tourists still show up to gawk at the world's most heavily fortified border, even as governments on both sides threaten to reduce each other to rubble.

Chinese tourists browse through military garb child-sized in the gift shop. Japanese teens in maroon school blazers flash peace signs and giggle high above a landscape of bright-blue water, drab, brown North Korean hills and seemingly deserted villages.

The Koreas' border can seem a surreal place at the best of times part tourist trap, part war zone. An amusement park, fast-food joints and kitschy souvenir shops mix with an ever-present Cold War tension that is higher now than it has been in years, following North Korean outrage over U.N. sanctions and joint U.S.-South Korean military drills.

Pyongyang has threatened to reduce Seoul to a "sea of fire" and stage pre-emptive nuclear attacks on Washington, while South Korea vows that if it is attacked, it will respond with even greater force. Visitors to the demilitarized zone Thursday viewed the clash with curiosity, fear, excitement even a dash of romance.

"We were a little bit afraid that maybe they'd throw nukes across the border," Thomas Wolfley, a 32-year-old software engineer from Los Angeles, said, describing his initial feelings when he heard the North's threats. "It makes it more exciting. I'm confident that if anything were to happen the United States would come get me."

The border allows visitors to experience a touch of danger but not so much that it interferes with their shopping and picture-taking.

Hundreds of thousands of troops from both Koreas operate in fairly close proximity here, each side training lots of big weapons on its opponent's not-too-distant capital.

Seoul is only an hour's drive away, and the dense, chaotic, vibrant sprawl of that megacity can seem like another world as it gives way to farms, scrubby mountains, armed sentries watching for North Korean infiltrators and coiled wire separating the highway from the banks of the Han River.

The 4-kilometer (2.5-mile) -wide DMZ is potentially a violent place, a point that's occasionally obscured by the tourists and DMZ-stamped T-shirts and hats.

Shooting still breaks out occasionally. A monument in the DMZ stands as a memorial to two American officers hacked to death with axes in 1976 by North Koreans during a fight that began as a dispute over U.S. efforts to trim a tree.

Tourists line up for the chance to walk deep below ground into North Korean infiltration tunnels, many of them surprisingly well made, that have been discovered over the years.

The high point of many tourists' DMZ visits is a small group of huts in Panmunjom, which straddles the border and is the place where troops from North and South come closest.

South Korea sends some of its tallest, toughest soldiers to Panmunjom. They stand statue-still, in fierce martial arts poses, chests stuck out, fists clenched, helmets and sunglasses reflecting the sun as they stare north. North Korean soldiers, smaller than their southern counterparts, glare through binoculars and gesture toward the south.

An attack at Panmunjom is unlikely, but a sudden North Korean strike in disputed waters in the Yellow Sea is certainly a possibility. Violence blamed on Pyongyang in 2010 killed 50 South Koreans.

Pyongyang's most recent threats follow U.N. sanctions imposed last week over its third nuclear test, which it conducted Feb. 12. North Korea says ongoing annual U.S.-South Korean military drills are invasion rehearsals.

Among other declarations, North Korea has said it will no longer recognize the armistice that ended the 1953 Korean War, though it has made such remarks before. The U.N. says the armistice cannot be abandoned unilaterally. The most obvious product of that agreement the DMZ seems unchanged.

Experts dismiss the North's threat to launch nuclear missiles against the United States, saying Pyongyang is years from developing the technology needed to pull that off. A direct attack on Seoul is also unlikely, as it would put the future of the ruling Kim dynasty at risk.

Recent threats are seen more as a way to rally support among North Korea's elite and military for leader Kim Jong Un and to scare Seoul and Washington into agreeing to talks that would eventually provide North Korea with aid and security guarantees.

Some South Koreans worry about rising hostility, but many more ignore or shrug off North Korean threats they've lived with for decades. And at the DMZ, some even find beauty in the broad strip of no-man's-land between the countries.

Baek Jong-moon and his wife, You Ga-yong, celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary by driving up Saturday to take a look from an observation point at North Korea and the wild, mostly unspoiled, late winter scenery.

"It's so peaceful here," Baek said. "I see no point worrying."

___

Hyung-jin Kim and Sam Kim in Seoul and Jiwon Shin in Imjingak contributed to this report.

___

Follow Foster Klug on Twitter at twitter.com/APKlug

http://blog.yahoo.com/_AJWHMYURRGXI3DMCXKTIRJNEVY/articles/1090536
http://antonyooo.blog.free.fr/index.php?post/2013/03/16/Grammar-Girl-s-101-Words-to-Sound-Smart-%28Quick-Dirty-Tips%29-e-book-downloads
http://blog.yahoo.com/_NIIFYHTD3J5Y4FPAWZJJX2K7CQ/articles/1097745
http://lubsnatc.metroblog.com/download_mother_road_e_book
http://luisebsvd.guildomatic.com/news/show/729789
http://qovunoah.blog.com/2013/03/15/download-don-quixote-the-exemplary-novels-of-cervantes-mobi-book/
http://blog.yahoo.com/_CXU3MF7YUZTRDF2QDS5R2VHVSY/articles/1078599
http://reggieivb.skyrock.com/3149375534-Download-La-terre-malade-des-hommes-La-bio-revolution-French-Edition.html
http://blog.yahoo.com/_PVGV5V3G2EYMBKJKUQGNSS7GSE/articles/1040092
http://ricorib.blog.fc2.com/blog-entry-1.html
http://billytu.blog.free.fr/index.php?post/2013/03/16/Sound-Off-book-downloads
http://keeshamck.jigsy.com/entries/general/graham-parker-fair-use-notes-from-spam-ebook-downloads
http://blog.yahoo.com/_ARPPBNCBWAF4JOOSWNTAIH52OI/articles/1077855
http://blog.yahoo.com/_O673FBY77CU2HU4VDGXV5M4L3A/articles/1064870
http://devonauedooo.webs.com/apps/blog/show/24783749
http://blog.yahoo.com/_PVGV5V3G2EYMBKJKUQGNSS7GSE/articles/1040094
http://terrelledmo.guildomatic.com/news/show/729792

Museum features creator of many US tile

WASHINGTON (AP) The National Building Museum is hosting an exhibit about a little-known craftsman whose work with tiles graces many of the greatest public buildings, from the Supreme Court to New York's Grand Central Terminal.

Rafael Guastavino immigrated to the United States from Barcelona in 1881 and patented a tiling method based on a Spanish technique that's hundreds of years old. His company went on to help define American architecture in hundreds of buildings with decorative tile ceilings.

The new exhibit "Palaces for the People" opening Saturday tells the story of Guastavino and his family's business from 1881 to 1962. The show runs through Jan. 20, 2014.

Guastavino's work can be found in 600 buildings in 36 states. They include the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, the National Cathedral, the Boston Public Library and the Nebraska state Capitol. The distinctive tiled arches in Grand Central are located inside the Oyster Bar and just outside the restaurant in an area known as the Whispering Gallery. They are among the best known features of the famous rail terminal, which is celebrating its centennial this year.

http://blog.yahoo.com/_GPSRNETZWGWDQHLYS5MGLYDJEU/articles/1021065
http://blog.yahoo.com/_FPKPRN2IYBJ6G4FKFEAB3MRV5U/articles/1010988
http://blog.yahoo.com/_2D3SE3RYHRQYZCHVIIMO7ZQSGY/articles/1029357
http://jarodbupu.guildomatic.com/news/show/730063
http://damianiiz.guildomatic.com/news/show/730064
http://blog.yahoo.com/_62XLZY7MFH7GFTZQUW57Y7NKHE/articles/1025453
http://veronicazcaz.guildomatic.com/news/show/730066
http://blogs.rediff.com/marcusyuoo/2013/03/17/a-clinical-guide-to-chinese-herbs-and-formulae-e-book-downloads/
http://blog.yahoo.com/_XLTIH2YGTTKPCMAVAVG6OPNKTI/articles/1052908
http://wayuliao.man-blog.net/The-first-blog-b1/Everyday-Forms-of-State-Formation-Revolution-and-the-Negotiation-of-Rule-in-Modern-Mexico-downloads-b1-p2.htm
