While it is tempting to blame governments for this appalling state of affairs, the truth is that almost all of us contribute to this problem.

5. pristine (adj) (syn: immaculate);
a) fresh and clean, as if new

The Japanese should understand that problem, as consumers are some of the most finicky in the world, demanding products that are "perfect, pristine and pretty."

b) to satisfy a paricular desire, interest, etc.

The tendency to indulge is driven by marketing schemes that offer "buy one, get one free".

8. discern(verb)
a) to know, recognize or understand sth, especially sth that is not obvious (syn:detect)

Indeed, consumers need to be more discerning throughout their shopping experience.

b) to see or hear sth, but not very clearly (syn: make out)

We could just discern the house in the distance

9.vocal(adj) : telling pple your opinions or protesting about sth loudly and with confidence

10. deed(noun, formal, literary): a thing that sb does that is usually very good or very bad (syn:act) （善意、悪意の明白な）行為、行動

（言葉に対する）実行という意味もある。下記例文はこの場合。

in words and deedsで言行ともにという意味になる。

Consumers need to be vocal in words and deeds.

12. gutter(noun); a long curved channel made of metal or plastic that is fixed under the edge of a roof to carry away the water when it rains.

13. restive(adj. formal); unable to stay still, or unwilling to be controlled, especially because you feel bored or not satisfied.

落ち着きのない、いらいらした、じっとしていない

National studies are also needed to provide a clearer picture of the true state of health, especially from restive areas where ethnic minorities have been at civil war for decades and travel was previously forbidden.
