HAVANA (Reuters) - The Colombian government and leftist FARC rebels wound up a 12th round of peace talks on Saturday but apparently made little progress despite pressure from the country's president who has staked his legacy on a successful outcome before a looming national election.

The talks with the FARC, or Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, recess every few weeks, then resume, with the next round set to begin on August 19. They are being facilitated by Cuba and Norway and hosted in Havana.

"We have begun the construction of accords concerning the rights and guarantees of political opposition in general, and in particular for new movements that arise after the signing of a final agreement," a joint statement issued on Saturday said, without indicating what common ground had been reached.

Discussions to end the longest and last remaining armed conflict in Latin America began last November with President Juan Manuel Santos saying he wanted them concluded in a year, a deadline he said this week was flexible if significant progress was made.

Santos said this week that talks to bring an end to five decades of conflict with the FARC were going well but should speed up.

"I am still optimistic. If I see that they have no future, that there is no will on the other side, that this is going nowhere, that same day I will dismantle the negotiating table and talks will end," Santos said.

The slow pace of the talks even as the fighting continues has Colombians beginning to lose patience. In a recent survey, some 43 percent of those polled in July said they were optimistic peace could be achieved, down from 45 percent in April.

The two sides, which are working through a five-point agenda, have only reached partial agreement on agrarian reform. Negotiators now are discussing the FARC's inclusion into the political system and then will move on to reparations to war victims, the drug trade and an end to the conflict.

The FARC has insisted on the calling of a constituent assembly and guaranteed seats in Congress, demands rejected by the government, which says a final agreement would be put to a referendum vote.

The government wants the rebels to hand in their weapons in exchange for safety guarantees. The FARC has indicated it is wary of disarming after an agreement is reached for fear of being eliminated by right-wing paramilitary groups.

"It is not simply a matter of guarantees. We are discussing political participation with the FARC because we hope with the signing of an agreement they will put down their arms," the government's lead negotiator, former vice president Humberto de la Calle, said in a statement on Saturday.

ELECTION PRESSURE

The 61-year-old Santos won election in 2010 by a landslide, and is widely believed to want to run for a second term in 2014.

The center-right president has bet his legacy on resolving the war, which began in 1964 when the FARC was founded as a communist agrarian reform movement. More than 200,000 people have died in the conflict and millions have been displaced.

Santos, in a Thursday interview with Reuters, appeared to threaten the FARC's negotiators if an agreement is not reached.

"They would have to return to Colombia and face the destiny of all other FARC leaders who ended up in the grave or in prison," he said.

The rebels lead negotiator, Ivan Marquez, said on Saturday such comments were "unfortunate" and did little to promote "a reasonable environment for the development and progress in working out a peace accord."

The Colombian president, who has seen his approval ratings slide below 50 percent, from highs above 74 percent when he took office, must announce his candidacy for a second term by November.

Bruce Bagley, an expert on Colombia at the University of Miami, said pressure was building for a breakthrough before a new election cycle began.

"Santos stated specifically that he is ready to suspend the talks. I think he was being diplomatic, but he laid down a line in the sand," Bagley said.

"If he can get through part two by November then he is ready to declare the talks a success and let them continue. If there's no progress I think that he's going to declare his candidacy and tell the FARC they simply were not serious and they are back to no discussions and a full onslaught on the part of the Colombian armed forces," he said.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks rose in light trading on Friday, led by a jump in Microsoft shares, as trading took place without interruption a day after the Nasdaq stock exchange suffered an unprecedented, three-hour trading halt.

Microsoftshares posted their largest daily percentage gain in more than four years after the head of the world's largest software company, Steve Ballmer, announced he will retire within 12 months.

The stock closed up 7.3 percent at $34.77 and was the largest contributor to the advance on the three major indexes.

"The big news today is the succession at Microsoft, but beyond that it's pretty quiet," said Dan Veru, chief investment officer at Palisade Capital Management in Fort Lee, New Jersey.

The Dow Jones industrial averagerose 46.77 points or 0.31 percent, to 15,010.51, the S&P 500gained 6.54 points or 0.39 percent, to 1,663.5 and the Nasdaq Compositeadded 19.085 points or 0.52 percent, to 3,657.792.

Volume was among the lowest of the year with about 4.9 billion shares changing hands on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and NYSE MKT, far below the daily average so far this year of about 6.3 billion shares.

Trading volume was only slightly higher than Thursday's 4.4 billion, affected by a technological problem that shut down trading in Nasdaq securities for three hours in the afternoon.

On Friday, Robert Greifeld, chief executive officer of Nasdaq OMXsaid the exchange resolved the technical problems that led to the halt but could not guarantee there would never be future glitches. Nasdaq shares gained 1.2 percent to close at $30.83.

Friday's gains helped the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite end a two-week losing streak, but the Dow posted its third consecutive weekly decline. For the week the Dow fell 0.5 percent, the S&P gained 0.5 percent and the Nasdaq added 1.5 percent.

Economic data showed sales of new single-family homes fell by 13.4 percent in July to an annual rate of 394,000 units, well below expectations of 490,000 units.

The data weighed on homebuilder stocks, with PulteGroupdown 1.6 percent to $16.06 and Toll Brothersoff 3.9 percent to $31.19. The PHLX housing sector indexlost 1.6 percent.

Aeropostale Inctumbled 20.2 percent to $8.76 after the teen apparel retailer forecast a steep third-quarter loss.

Shares of Autodeskrallied 7.7 percent to $38.91 after earlier hitting $41.72, its highest level since April 2012.

Roughly two issues rose for every one that fell on the NYSE and on Nasdaq 13 rose for every 11 decliners.

LONDON (Reuters) - British boy band One Direction was greeted by more than 3,000 screaming fans on Tuesday for the London premiere of its new 3D documentary "This Is Us," while music mogul and manager Simon Cowell addressed his impending fatherhood for the first time.

Cowell, 53, the owner of music and television production company Syco, which manages One Direction, is expecting a child with his friend's ex-wife, socialite Lauren Silverman.

The music magnate declined to comment publicly about the news until Tuesday, when he told BBC at the premiere's red carpet that "things are changing in my life right now, for the better."

"I'm proud to be a dad," Cowell said. "It's something I hadn't thought of before and then, now I know, I feel good about it. She's a very special girl."

Cowell also told reporters that he would be willing to let his own child become a pop star, as long as he was the manager.

Cowell joined "This Is Us" director Morgan Spurlock to share the spotlight with the boy band that has risen to worldwide fame and success since the five members formed the band on UK television singing competition "The X Factor" in 2010.

The Sony Pictures documentary, out in theaters on August 30, features concert footage and the group's life backstage and on the road over the last two years.

One Direction, formed by Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Niall Horan, has built a devoted fan base around the world of mainly teenage girls.

In London, fans camped out for days in Leicester Square ahead of the premiere to catch a glimpse of their music idols, whose ages range from the late teens to early 20s.

"There's been a lot of grabbing today, a lot of grabbing," Payne said as he joked with reporters about the eager fans.

Malik added that he was feeling a mixture of "nerves and excitement, mainly just gratitude to our fans that have turned up and been so supportive and dedicated."

Precautions were taken to protect the band by erecting black barricades around the gardens in Leicester Square and limiting the number of attendees for the premiere to 3,000.

TOKYO (AP) -- Nintendo reported an 8.6 billion yen ($88 million) profit for the fiscal first quarter in a reversal from losses the previous year, thanks to a cheaper yen.

Nintendo Co., the Japanese maker of Super Mario games and the Wii U machine, reported a 17.2 billion yen loss in the same quarter a year earlier, partly because of an unfavorable exchange rate.

Kyoto-based Nintendo got a nearly 17 billion yen ($173 million) gain from the yen's decline against the dollar and the euro for the April-June period.

A cheap yen is a boon for Japanese exporters such as Nintendo.

Video games have been hurt by the popularity of smartphones and other devices that also deliver online entertainment. Wii U sales have fallen short of company forecasts.

NEWARK, New Jersey (Reuters) - A pair of private equity executives who own a majority of the Philadelphia 76ers basketball team on Thursday reached a deal to acquire the New Jersey Devils hockey team and its arena.

Joshua Harris and David Blitzer bought the team from former owner Jeffrey Vanderbeek. They declined to disclose the purchase price, though The Record newspaper of New Jersey valued the deal at $320 million.

The deal ends weeks of negotiations between Harris, the National Hockey League and a financially strapped franchise that was struggling to meet its obligations to its lenders and had a fractured relationship with local officials, including Newark Mayor Cory Booker.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said the new ownership would help the revitalization of this city.

"We're now at a point in time ... where two terrific people are going to take the foundation that has been put in place and take it to the next level," Bettman told a press conference.

Harris, a billionaire managing director at Apollo Global management, and Blitzer, a senior managing director at Blackstone, led a group that acquired the NBA's 76ers in 2011 for about $280 million.

The Devils have played in the Newark-based Prudential Center since 2007, when they relocated from East Rutherford, New Jersey. The arena, championed by former Newark Mayor Sharpe James, has struggled to turn a profit due in part to a large number of competing sports and entertainment venues in the New York metropolitan area.

Billboard magazine rated the arena as the eighth-highest grossing worldwide for the first half of 2013. However, the venue, known as "The Rock," has struggled to generate enough revenue, particularly since the departure of the NBA's Nets to nearby Brooklyn.

Obama has now appointed five judges to the court, which can have up to 19 members. The court handles about 90 percent of the tax disputes between the U.S. Internal Revenue Service and businesses or individuals that end up in court.

Thornton and Nega were confirmed on Thursday night by a voice vote of the Senate.

Thornton was already a Tax Court judge whose term expired in March. Nega was a longtime tax lawyer at the congressional Joint Committee on Taxation.

Earlier this week, Obama also nominated a sixth judge, Paige Marvel, to the Tax Court. If confirmed, Marvel would increase to nine the number of Tax Court judges nominated by Democratic presidents. The other nine were nominated by Republican presidents. The judges serve 15-year terms.

Thursdays 73-degree reading was also the coolest Aug. 15 ever on record in Atlanta, besting a record low high of 77 degrees in 1908.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Children born to parents with a history of cigarette smoking are more likely to light up than kids of people who never smoked, according to a new U.S. study.

Despite falling smoking rates across age groups, researchers found that children raised by current or even former smokers were about three times more likely to be smokers themselves during their teenage years than kids raised by parents who never smoked.

"Things are getting better, but we can see it's best among the consistent non-smoking households," said Mike Vuolo, the study's lead author from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Previous research has produced similar results, but the new study was based on 23 years of data on the smoking patterns of the parents in the study - 214 people who were ninth grade students in 1988 - to see whether their habits from adolescence onward were tied to their children's risk of smoking.

For example, Vuolo and his colleague, who published their findings in Pediatrics, were able to compare the children of never-smokers and people who had smoked consistently since high school.

They had data on 314 children of the original group of teens. In 2011, the kids of the second generation - all at least 11 years old - were asked if they had smoked cigarettes within the last year. Sixteen percent said yes.

Among the children of parents who had never smoked, about 8 percent reported smoking cigarettes during the past year.

That compared to between 23 percent and 29 percent of the children of current or former smokers.

The researchers also looked at the parents' "trajectories" of smoking for clues about the parental influence on the children's behavior.

They found that 23 percent of kids whose parents had smoked as adolescents but quit or reduced their smoking as young adults were smokers themselves.

Among kids whose parents had smoked little or not at all in high school but started smoking in adulthood, 29 percent were smokers.

And 25 percent of children whose parents had smoked consistently since high school were smokers.

In addition, children who said they had smoked during the last year were more likely to be older, to display more symptoms of depression and to have low grades and low self-esteem. They were also more likely to feel distant from their parents and to have an older sibling who smoked.

While the study can't prove that parental smoking caused the children to adopt the habit, Dr. Jonathan Winickoff, who has studied teen smoking behavior but wasn't involved in the new research, said the new results support past findings.

"I think the first confirmatory result is that if you are a parent who smokes, your teenage child has a three-fold increased risk of smoking," Winickoff, an associate professor in Harvard Medical School's Department of Pediatrics in Boston, said.

He added that there are several theories on why children of smokers may be at an increased risk of picking up the habit, including modeling their parents' behaviors, easy access to cigarettes and being "primed" for an addiction through second-hand smoke exposure.

He cautioned, however, that the new study can't determine whether a child's risk of becoming a smoker falls if the parents stop smoking early-on, such as in their early adult years, because the group that contained those early quitters also included some current light smokers.

"They can't say - based on these data - whether earlier parental quitting is associated with less smoking in their kids," he said.

The researchers also warn that their findings may not apply to all smokers, because only 15 percent of the people included in their survey had a bachelor's degree or more education and most had their first child at a fairly young age.

Vuolo added that they don't know whether these smoking rates in the second generation are an improvement over the past because they're only looking at one point in time. Going forward, they will be able to look at smoking rates over time as they collect more data.

"We're going to be able to answer that question," he said.

Asked about remarks made by Obama in an interview with the New York Times last Saturday and then repeated this week in a speech, Harper told reporters in Quebec City that Canada's perspective was well-known by everyone in Washington.

"That is that first of all our No. 1 priority in Canada is the creation of jobs, and clearly this is a project that will create jobs on both sides of the border," Harper said. "And it is in our judgment an important project, not just for our economy and for job creation but for the long-term energy security of North America."

Obama said in the interview that the evidence was that TransCanada Corp's Keystone XL pipeline, which would carry 830,000 barrels per day of crude from Canada's oil sands and the Bakken shale in North Dakota and Montana to refineries on the U.S. Gulf Coast, would not be a big jobs generator.

He said it might create 2,000 jobs during the construction for a year or two and then 50 or 100 jobs thereafter. The U.S. State Department's analysis in March was that Keystone would support 42,100 direct and indirect jobs.

Harper's Conservative government has been a big booster of Keystone XL and other pipelines to tidewater because it wants export markets for increasing crude oil production in the land-locked oil sands of northern Alberta.

Green groups have put heavy pressure on Obama to reject Keystone XL, warning of spills and higher emissions from the carbon-intensive oil sands.

The U.S. administration's final decision on whether to approve Keystone XL is expected later this year or early in 2014.
