Conrad Black: Where is the next Ronald Reagan?

Conrad Black: Where is the next Ronald Reagan?
Those looking for evidence of American decline need not look much further than the Authentic NFL Jersey difficulty the Republicans are having finding a presidential candidate who generates any excitement. It is a party that seems to oscillate between formidable vote-getters (Eisenhower, Nixon and Reagan), and four-letter non-exciters (Ford, Dole and the Bushes).

Barack Obama won in 2008 though he was unqualified for the office, mouthed worrisomely socialistic platitudes and was actually outperformed in the Lawrence Taylor Jersey primaries by Hillary Clinton. He did this with an unspoken offer to relieve the altruistic white American majority of its guilty feelings regarding 250 years of slavery followed by a century of segregation, by electing him president. And as a (valuable) bonus, he threw into the bargain an implicit guarantee that the country would no longer have to listen to charlatan African-American race-card politicians like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. Obama became the first respectable black American leader since Martin Luther King.
At all previous times in American history, when the country faced a severe crisis, leadership was on the horizon by this point in the cycle. In the worst trials, the threat of civil war in 1860 and the Great Depression of 1932, Lincoln and Roosevelt , though few saw what epochal figures they would become, promised something a good deal more purposeful and uplifting than the then-incumbents (Buchanan and Hoover). President Obama, by contrast, is now reduced to truckling to the Wall Street "occupiers" ( along with Hollywood phonies such as Roseanne Barr) and the troops-home-now isolationists.

In 1968, the country was wracked by assassinations, race and anti-war riots, and 200 to 400 body bags returning every week from Vietnam, where over 500,000 draftees were fighting an undeclared jungle war for a vague objective, according to an impossible strategic plan . Men such as Robert Kennedy, Hubert Humphrey, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and Nelson Rockefeller all ran to replace President Lyndon Johnson.

Today, debt has the whole country in its grip. Annual federal deficits almost as large as the entire money supply, several times as large as those George W. left the country, are piling up each year and are forecast to continue, while the President dreams of increased spending and "green jobs." It is a skull-cracking task for the bipartisan 12-member Deficit Budget Committee to effect even a 10% reduction in the next decade's projected deficits, despite having a legislated mandate to do so.

Student loans, which are notoriously hard to collect and are the liabilities of the trustees of the nation's future, now total over $ 1-trillion. Underemployment afflicts nearly 20% of the work force, and inflation in those areas that have not been flattened by deflation , like housing, is in double digits. All economic forecasts, dismal though they are, are matched against absurdly optimistic suppositions of an economic revival that cannot take place until the US economy is reoriented away from excessive reliance on unsustainable service industries that don't add much value to anything.

The country's economic weakness backs into other strategic areas. The United States has combated terrorism with commendable vigor and efficacy, but still risks being out-manoeuvred by the terrorism-sponsoring states. Nothing has been done to reduce oil imports; and as long as the United States imports $ 250-billion of oil annually from countries that finance international Islamist activities (especially Saudi Arabia), it is effectively on both sides of the War on Terror. And as long as the United States is nominally allied with Pakistan (through 800 miles of which, it supplies NATO forces in Afghanistan) - a nation that sponsors the murderous Haqqani network, and allows the Taliban and its allies rent-fee accommodations in Waziristan - it will be on both sides of the Afghan War, too. None of this is consistent with the normal conduct of a Great Power.

The mystery is the arid firmament of the Republicans. Mitt Romney is chiefly known for a health plan in Massachusetts that didn't work, and for favouring abortion until he opposed it. He is a successful private equity financier, but this is not necessarily a vote-winner, as it consists essentially of breaking up businesses and selling them - financial shuffles that feed the velocity of money but don't create jobs or add value (a skill but not a naturally popular activity). Though he effectively managed the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, he is bland and unconvincing. He won't frighten independent voters, but he has been struggling since 2007 to excite the Reaganite Republican bedrock without conspicuous success. He would be an adequate nominee, and probably a competent president, but the country wants radical reform and lashings of panache.

When Texan governor Rick Perry entered the race speaking darkly of treason at the Federal Reserve, of jogging with a handgun in his sweats, and of receiving a vasectomy from his father-in-law (a doctor at least), a great many people, in and outside the United States, were reminded of how tired they were of big-talking, syntactically challenged Texans. Perry rose on entry and sank on audition (but his 20% flat-tax plan may help him back up the ladder; Romney, having disparaged a flat tax, naturally is rethinking that, too).

Just the rumour of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie's candidacy put him into contention in the polls, but he declined to enter the race. Otherwise, the most attractive candidates are too young or not interested and have also declined (Mitch Daniels, Haley Barbour, Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio and Paul Ryan).

But, as I suggested last week here, there is a chance of excitement. Herman Cain is a self-made African-American, well-educated, keyed to opportunity and not victimhood, a successful fast-food executive and management buy-out financier , and former chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. He is a likeable and even stirring speaker, though slightly unserious at times, and he has Marcus Allen Jersey transformed the race with his advocacy of a 9-9-9 tax (a 9% tax on each of personal income, corporate income and retail sales).

After such a sequence of GOP fade-outs, it would be premature to conclude that the man the office seeks has been found, but a counter-chippy African-American with his background could be a dynamite candidate and an effective president (and could split the African-American vote with the incumbent). The American public is so (justifiably) disgusted with its political leadership - executive and legislative - that Cain's lack of political experience could be a political plus point.

Only two months from the start of the state caucuses and the delegate selection process, such an important election (which will cost $ 2-billion to party contributors on both sides to carry out), should be a good deal more interesting than it has been. The United States and the world are waiting for some leadership.

Leafs to raise Sundin's No. 13 to the ACC rafter

Leafs to raise Sundin's No. 13 to the ACC rafters
So it came as no surprise that Donald Driver Jersey the ovation was much louder on Saturday night, when the Leafs' former captain visited the Air Greg Jennings Jersey Canada Centre for just the second time since leaving Toronto for a one-season stint in Vancouver. It was also his first time sitting in the stands, not skating on the ice below.

But Sundin will be back soon - Feb. 11, to be exact. That night, before the Leafs take on the Montreal Canadiens, the franchise will make its all-time points leader the 16th player to have his jersey number honoured with Ray Nitschke Jersey a spot in the ACC's rafters.

"I think once you retire, you get a chance to reflect on your career and where you played and what it meant to yourself," Sundin said between the first and second periods of the Leafs' 4-3 win over Pittsburgh. Charles Woodson Jersey "To get a chance to represent the Leafs for all the years that I did and play in a city like this - and you realize the first time you watch a game in the stands, the atmosphere and everything - it's tough to describe in words .... It's a huge honour to get the invitation. "

Sundin became a Leaf on June 28, 1994, when Quebec sent him, Garth Butcher Jermichael Finley Jersey and Todd Warriner to Toronto for Wendel Clark, Sylvain Lefebvre and Landon Wilson.

While Toronto mourned the loss of one icon in Clark's departure, they gained another in Sundin. In 2007-08, his final year in Toronto, he broke Darryl Sittler's team records for goals and points. The only thing missing from a lengthy resume, which included Olympic gold with Sweden in 2006, was a Stanley Cup victory.

But Sundin is not dwelling on that much.

"I played almost 20 years," he said. "We'd been to the conference finals twice. Of course you want to win the Cup, but my career's given me so much - both playing in the National Hockey League and on the [ Swedish] national team. I could not have asked for any more. I've been blessed with way too much. "

The Leafs only retire numbers of players whose careers were cut short tragically. Bill Barilko's No. 5 and Ace Bailey's No. 6 are the only two that will never be worn again. The other 16 numbers in the rafters are available for use (although many , including Doug Gilmour's No. 93, are unlikely to be used again).

Asked if he was bothered that his No. 13 would technically remain in circulation, Sundin simply shrugged.

"Hey, I'm just happy to be mentioned in the same breath as Bjore Salming, Darryl Sittler, all these great legends of the game," Sundin said. "It's great. I don't care about that."

Lecavalier still drives the Lightning

Lecavalier still drives the Lightning
The photo features the lanky Lecavalier taking on Calgary Flames power forward Jarome Iginla in Game 3 of the 2004 Stanley Cup final. Most will tell you Iginla won the battle but Lecavalier won the war, as he sent the message that he was no longer a kid phenom and that he and his Bolts would be pushed around no more.

Fast-forward seven years and Lecavalier has a few more miles on his tires and Steven Stamkos is taking his share of the spotlight, but there's no question who drives the Lightning.

"Vinny's a great captain. When he's not there we miss his presence. Last year he was gone for about a month and when he came back we really took off," said Lightning coach Guy Boucher. "If you want your team to buy in and play defence first, it has to start at the top. His mind is in the right place. His game is complete and last year after Christmas he inspired our whole team with is effort backchecking. Consequently, after Christmas we were great on defence and got the results we wanted. Ronnie Brown Jersey "

Lecavalier is in his 13th NHL season and after 944 games has scored 355 goals and added 445 assists.

With a Stanley Cup, World Cup gold medal and Olympic gold medal already on his resume at the age of 31 and with lots of hockey before him, the Hall of Fame will likely be calling some day. Brandon Marshall Jersey The focus in Tampa not too long ago was on keeping the team afloat and Lecavalier, who is in the third year of an 11-year US $ 85-million contract, appeared to be in hockey hell with no hope of reaching the heights he'd seen early in his career.

But an ownership change that saw Jeff Vinik purchase the team and pump cash and organizational talent such as GM Steve Yzerman and Boucher into the franchise has Lecavalier thriving once again.

"Mr. Vinik has given $ 40 million to charities and pumped I don't know how much into the building and it's not even his. He's got Steve Yzerman and Brandon Flower Jersey Guy Boucher. It's a world-class organization and I'm really proud to be part of it, "said Lecavalier, who scored the winning power-play goal Friday night to give him five on Jamaal Charles Jersey the year and eight points through 11 games.

"I've always loved Tampa and we've had some ups and downs here. But when you win a Cup and are in one place for 13 years, for me, it's special to put the jersey on and be part of it. Now , with the direction we're in, it's a plus. Players will be looking over at Tampa and wanting to come here. "

Lecavalier and Martin Chad Henne Jersey St. Louis appeared headed for great things after winning the Cup in 2004, but then ownership follies put their talent on hold. Vinik's ownership has made the Lightning relevant once again in the NHL.

"We believe in our team and we believe in our system and that's the most important thing," said Lecavalier. "A lot of people didn't believe we could make the playoffs last year, but we believed in ourselves and our system and look where it got us (Eastern final), "he said." I've always said consistency is the most important thing, individually and as a team. Last year, we'd lose one or two and then win four or five. We wouldn't take no for an answer. "

With Yzerman, a former captain, Hall of Famer and Cup winner, heading up the organization, Lecavalier says there's no cheating as a player.

"You have to be accountable. You have to lead by example and that's something my coach says all the time. He says, 'it starts with you.' Steve and Guy can see that. It's good for the whole organization to have that kind of leadership because we all have to try and live up to it. "

Rams stun Saints for first win

Rams stun Saints for first win
Maybe the crosstown Cardinals' pregame appearance with the World Series trophy inspired them to pull off a shocker of their own. A few choice words from their star player helped, too.

Steven Jackson awoke in the middle of the night on Dallas Clark Jersey game day, deciding he'd tell teammates enough was enough and that no way the Rams were this awful. Then he led by example with two touchdowns in his first 100-yard game in three seasons , helping St. Louis earn its first win with a 31-21 upset of the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

"I think the Cardinals being here was great for the city," Jackson said. "Whoever showed up today, regardless if the place was empty, today was the day.

"We came out with a mindset we were going to fight."

Drew Brees barely kept alive his touchdown pass streak on a meaningless score in the final seconds a week after throwing five in a 62-7 rout of the winless Indianapolis Colts. Brees was intercepted twice, too, with Darian Stewart's pick and 27-yard return putting the game away with 2:51 to go.

"As you look at the cardinal sins of football, we committed quite a few of those Reggie Wayne Jersey today," Brees said, no pun intended. "Obviously, we gave them a lot of momentum."

The NFC South-leading Saints (5-3) average a league-best 35 points, but never got on track against a defence ranked near the bottom of the league. The Rams (1-6) had a season-high six sacks after entering the game with just 11, three by Chris Long.

"We always thought we had that in us," coach Steve Spagnuolo said. "It was a wonderful weekend for St. Louis fans."

Saints pass catchers were bottled up by a secondary minus its top three players, and the rushing game totaled just 56 yards on 20 carries. Saints radio reported that offensive guard Carl Nicks and line coach Aaron Kromer had to be separated after squabbling near the end of the game.

The Rams trailed by double digits in each of their first six games, and before Sunday had the lead for only 6:28 all season. They led at halftime for the first time since they were up 3-0 against the 49ers in the 2009 season finale in a 28-6 loss.

The Saints were held scoreless in the first half for the first time since 2007, mustering just 94 yards total offence and going 1 for 6 on third down. Antonio Gates Jersey Watching from the booth while recovering from a knee injury, coach Sean Payton detected a lack of effort .

"They certainly played with more energy than we did," Payton said. "I just thought we looked flat."

The Rams wore throwback jerseys in a nod to their 1999 Super Bowl championship team and the Cardinals' appearance helped fire up a crowd growing accustomed to disappointment from the Rams. The game was sold out, but there were hundreds of empty seats.

Manager Tony La Russa donned a Sam Bradford jersey and Game 7 winner Chris Carpenter went out for the coin toss wearing a Jackson jersey.

Rams players attended Game 3 of the World Series in Texas last week - Albert Pujols' three-homer game - the night before their 34-7 loss to the Cowboys in Dallas.

"I very, very much appreciate Tony and his players for coming over today," Spagnuolo said. "I wanted them to know how much that means to us."

All three Saints losses have come on the road. But they were favoured by nearly two touchdowns against a franchise that has been staggeringly awful on both sides of the ball. Like the Colts a week earlier, the Rams were starting their backup quarterback.

AJ Feeley made his second straight start in place of Bradford (high left ankle sprain), and threw his first touchdown pass of the season in a mistake-free outing.

Jackson had 159 yards on 25 carries, including a 32-yard jaunt on fourth-and-2 to set up his second touchdown that made it 24-0 in the Pierre Garcon Jersey third quarter.

Jonathan Vilma got the Saints on the board after recovering Feeley's fumble on a sack by Malcolm Jenkins, and Pierre Thomas scored with 10 minutes left to cut the gap to 10.

The first quarter was scoreless, a victory in itself for the Rams, given they've been outscored 59-13 in the opening period. Then, shockingly, they took control.

They capitalized on a pair of turnovers to go up 17-0 at the break. Jackson scored on a 3-yard run two Dwight Freeney Jersey plays after rookie Robert Quinn's blocked punt, the first in three NFL seasons against Thomas Morstead. Josh Gordy's interception at the Saints 38 gave St. Louis another short field that led to Brandon Lloyd's 8-yard catch.

Notes: Jackson has 28 career 100-yard games, passing Marshall Faulk for second in franchise history and 10 behind Eric Dickerson. He passed Faulk for third in yards from scrimmage and passed Dickerson for fourth with 59 TDs .... Attendance of 57,179 was about 7,000 shy of capacity. Tickets were available for $ 5 on StubHub and the Rams sold tickets for $ 23, the number worn by Cardinals World Series MVP David Freese

Senators get the better of Leafs

At 7-2-1, the Leafs were sitting atop the Northeast Division standings just more than three weeks into the season. The Senators, after a dreadful 1-5-0 start, had reeled off five consecutive wins, with hot-shooting Jason Spezza performing as arguably the second-best forward in the league to the Leafs Phil Kessel. Something had to give.

Perhaps not surprisingly, it was the visitors' awful penalty Lynn Swann Jersey killing that paved the way for Ottawa's sixth victory in a row, 3-2, moving the Senators to within one point of Toronto in the division. Ranked 27th in the NHL coming into the game , the Leafs' short-handed unit yielded two more goals - Colin Greenwood and Chris Neil doing the damage - and the Leafs were not able to recover, despite a two-goal effort by suddenly-hot Clarke MacArthur.

"I've got to keep hammering on guys about making mental mistakes," Philip Rivers Jersey Leafs coach Ron Wilson said about his lagging penalty kill. "We can't allow a stretch-pass like that to beat us. It's the kind of thing we have to correct. "

Wilson was referring to a bizarre play that tied the game, 1-1, late in the first period. With Carl Gunnarsson serving a cross-checking penalty, Senators rookie David Rundblad gathered the puck in the corner to the right of Ottawa goalie Robin Lehner . Rundblad somehow caught Leafs defencemen Luke Schenn and Dion Phaneuf napping and fired a 135-foot pass onto the stick of Greening, who sped in behind the pair on a breakaway and Ryan Mathews Jersey cleanly beat Jonas Gustavsson to the glove side.

"That goal had a big impact on the game," Wilson said. "We had a 1-0 lead and were controlling things pretty well. A goal like that is able to light the candle and it did for Ottawa. They played pretty well after that. "

The game's decisive moment is one Gustavsson would rather forget. Rookie Kaspars Daugavins beat him with a fluttering shot from 30 feet to give Ottawa a 3-1 lead at 7:08 of the final frame. Leafs centre Matt Lombardi had been stripped of the puck by Zack Smith in the neutral zone, leading to the goal, but it should have been a routine save for Gustavsson.

"Yeah, of course, that's a shot I should stop Mike Wallace Jersey every day," admitted the goalie, making his sixth consecutive start while James Reimer recovers from a whiplash injury. "For some reason, I lost sight of the puck when it came over [ the height of] the boards, but that shouldn't happen. It's too bad. "

With Kessel blazing through the early part of the schedule - leading the league in goals and points - the Leafs' best line from last season has also warmed after a slow start. MacArthur scored both Toronto goals, giving him four in the past three games. He put the visitors ahead, 1-0, firing an unscreened wrist shot past Lehner from 25 feet on a power play midway through the Vincent Jackson Jersey first period, and then whacked a Mikhail Grabovski rebound past Lehner - making his first start of the season - at 9 : 07 of the third frame to narrow Ottawa's 3-1 advantage. He had also scored in Saturday night's 4-3 win over Pittsburgh at the Air Canada Centre.

"Yeah, things are starting to happen for me but I should have had three tonight," MacArthur said, lamenting a good chance late in regulation time. "[Lehner] made such a great save on [Nikolai Kulemin], who flipped it back through and I just tried to bat it into the net. It was close, but I think Ottawa deserved to win tonight. "

Ottawa fired 10 unanswered shots at Gustavsson and finally broke through on the long stretch-pass from Rundblad to Greening. The Toronto goalie had no chance on the Senators' go-ahead goal in the middle frame - a power-play effort by Neil, whose stick-blade neatly re-directed a one-timer from inside the point by defenceman Erik Karlsson.

The Leafs resume their three-game road trip on Wednesday at New Jersey, before travelling to Columbus on Thursday

Profits top estimates for 11th quarter as analys

Profits top estimates for 11th quarter as analysts see rally
American companies are beating Wall Street profit estimates for the 11th straight quarter, enough to revive a bull market that analysts say will eclipse any rally in the past 12 years.

A total of 220 out of 295 Standard & Poor's 500 Index companies that reported results since Oct. 11 have exceeded forecasts for the third quarter, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Price targets for companies in the index from more than 10,000 estimates suggest the S & P 500 will advance 13 percent to 1,447.93 in a year.

Companies from Google Inc. To Peabody Energy Corp. Are delivering higher earnings at a time when Bill Gross, the co-chief investment officer of Pacific Investment Management Co., Is warning that Europe's debt crisis will spur a recession. While more than $ 6.3 trillion has been erased from global equities since May, analyst forecasts imply the benchmark measure will post its biggest rally since the 1990s technology bubble, when the gain since March 2009 is Rocky Bleier Jersey included.

"This is looking like it's going to be a really decent Terry Bradshaw Jersey quarter," Warren Koontz, head of US large-cap value stocks at Loomis Sayles & Co. In Boston, which manages about $ 150 billion, said in an Oct. 25 interview. " Valuations are very, very low relative to history, and you don't have to make heroic assumptions on multiples to get reasonable returns. "

The S & P 500 traded at 11.7 times reported income on Oct. 3, within 14 percent of its price-earnings ratio at the bottom of the financial crisis in March 2009, Bloomberg data show. The index has climbed 14 percent in October, more than any month since 1974. It gained 3.8 percent last week to 1,285.09.

December futures on the index declined 1.1 percent at 9:49 am in London today.

Meeting the average price forecasts for each stock would bring the gain since March 2009 to 114 percent. That's the biggest rally over a comparable period since May 2000, data compiled by Bloomberg show. Before that, the index exceeded the return three times since 1928 - in the early 1980s and in periods following World War II and the Great Depression.

"I'm not ultra bearish or ultra bullish, but that 1,450 level is attainable," Chad Morganlander, a Florham Park, New Jersey-based money manager at Stifel Donovan McNabb Jersey Nicolaus & Co., Which oversees more than $ 115 billion in client assets, said in an Oct. 26 telephone interview. "Fundamentals are starting to overcome a great deal of the macro issues at hand, but once the macro issues improve, multiple expansion will occur, which will take you up to your 16 - or 15-type multiple , "based on reported earnings, he said.

The advance since Oct. 3 has been led by companies and industries whose earnings are most tied to economic growth. Energy producers and materials companies have rallied more than 26 percent, led by a 66 percent increase in Abingdon, Virginia-based coal producer Alpha Natural Resources Inc. and a 59 percent gain for AK Steel Holding Corp. in West Chester, Ohio. New York-based Morgan Stanley helped send financial firms higher with a 55 percent gain, the data show.

Profits in the benchmark gauge for American equities climbed 19 percent on average in the third quarter, based on results released so far. Earnings are beating analyst predictions by 5.8 percent, compared with an average rate of 8.5 percent since 2008, the data show. Almost 3.1 companies are exceeding forecasts for each that doesn't, compared with 3 since 2005, the data show.

Earnings growth has been "good enough" to resuscitate the rally, said Michael Shaoul, chairman of Marketfield Asset Management in New York, which oversees $ 1 billion. Shaoul's Marketfield Fund returned 6 percent in the past year, beating 94 percent of its peers, data compiled by Bloomberg show.

"The nice thing about the market going down is that you don't need to do wonderfully to beat expectations," Shaoul said in an Oct. 27 phone interview. "It's very easy to make the argument that large portions of the US equity market give you good value. "

. The Citigroup Economic Surprise Index for the US turned positive on Oct. 14 for the first time since April 29, the day the S & P 500 peaked at an almost three-year high. The gauge measures the degree by which economic data are exceeding the median prediction in Bloomberg surveys. Gross domestic product expanded 2.5 percent in the second quarter, almost double the previous period's rate, the Commerce Department said Oct. 27.

European leaders expanded the region's bailout fund to 1 trillion euros ($ 1.4 trillion) last week and agreed on plans to fund banks. They're trying to prevent a default in Greece, where public debt was 145 percent of GDP last year, higher than any other nation in the region, according to the European Commission. Government bond yields in Italy, Spain and Portugal reached record highs versus German rates this year on concern deficits threaten their solvency.

Gross, the manager of the world's biggest bond fund, predicted an economic contraction is coming even if European leaders reached a plan to solve the debt crisis. "Recession ahead even if agreement is reached," he said Oct. 25 on Twitter. "Greek default certain, Portugal / Ireland loom. "

Concern defaults in Europe will spur bank losses and dent economic growth sent the S & P 500 down more than 19 percent between April and October. Declines accelerated after the US was stripped of its AAA credit rating by S & P. The S & P GSCI Total Return Index of commodities has retreated 14 percent from its high on April 8. US Treasuries have returned 5.7 percent since April 29, when the S & P 500 peaked, according to data compiled by Bank of America Corp.

While policy makers made progress this week, "there's still a lot that could go wrong with Europe," Neel Kashkari, Pimco's head of global equities, said in a phone interview Oct. 27. The US remains at risk for a recession, he said .

A slowing expansion in 2012 will show analysts are too bullish, according to Walter Todd, who helps manage about $ 950 million at Greenwood Capital in Greenwood, South Carolina. Even with this month's rally, GDP forecasts are lower than they were earlier this year. In February, two Brett Keisel Jersey months before the S & P 500 peaked 1,363.61, economists projected 2012 growth of 3.3 percent, according to the average estimate of 80 economists surveyed by Bloomberg. Now, they see a 2 percent expansion.

"The analysts that cover an individual company, their depth of knowledge is a mile deep and an inch wide," Todd said in an Oct. 26 phone interview. "You can get these situations where the analyst could be right about the fundamentals and everything , but the stock's never going to reach their price target because of all these other macro factors. "

The S & P 500 has rallied 7.5 percent since New York-based Alcoa Inc. Missed the average estimate for third-quarter profit on Oct. 11. Analysts say 449 companies in the S & P 500, from Peabody Energy to Google, will trade at higher prices a year from now as earnings advance 10 percent in 2012, on average, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Peabody in St. Louis and Mountain View, California-based Google beat projections last quarter and analysts expect them to advance at least 21 percent, data compiled by Bloomberg show. Peabody hasn't missed Franco Harris Jersey forecasts since the first quarter of 2009, while Google, the world's biggest Internet-search company, posted third-quarter income on Oct. 13 that topped expectations by 11 percent as businesses spent more to reach online consumers through advertisements.

"Earnings growth is strong," Wayne Lin, a money manager at Baltimore-based Legg Mason Inc., Said in an Oct. 28 phone interview. His firm oversaw $ 611 billion on Sept. 30. "Once you get that stability on Europe, you could see some expansion of the earnings multiple, and that helped with continued earnings growth makes equities, even now, look rather attractive. "
