"We actually got into some pretty big fights over this," says Knoller, 29. "I love my Mom to death but she's a crazy, sweet Jewish mother and I was a little worried about what she might post in front of my closest friends."

As Mother's Day approaches, 1 in 3 mothers are connected with their teens over Facebook, according to the social networking giant's review of how users self-identify.

With more than 1 billion Facebook users, that's a lot of mothers and kids keeping in touch through social media, says Fordham University communications professor Paul Levinson, author of "New New Media." ''Facebook has been a boon to family relationships," said Levinson.

Kelly McBride, an assistant professor of communications at LaSalle University in Philadelphia, says her students who "friend" their mothers keep their Facebook pages benign, using other social media like Instagram or Twitter for the racy stuff.

"They may be willing to 'friend' their mother, but when they do, they take down the drinking or partying or suggestive photographs," she says.

McBride says she'd like to get her own mother, who is 77, onto Facebook. "I've offered repeatedly to make her a Facebook page so I could friend her, but she just won't do it," she says.

Parenting expert Susan Newman recommends that mothers wait until their children are independent adults before friending them.

"Being a friend with your son or daughter on Facebook, to me is synonymous with reading your teenager's diary," she says. "Adolescents are trying to develop an identity and they have so much hovering and helicopter parenting going on, Facebook adds another layer that seems to be very intrusive."

But Stephen Balkam, CEO of the Washington D.C.-based Family Online Safety Institute, says he was his daughter's first "friend," a requirement for her to even have a Facebook account when she turned 13, the minimum age allowed by the company.

"I promised not to stalk her, but I do need to keep an eye on it," he says.

While 13-year-olds are the most likely group to initiate a friendship with a parent, with more than 65 percent of those friendships being initiated by the child, people in their 20s are the least likely, initiating just 40 percent of the friendships with their parents, Facebook says.

Rochelle Knoller of Fair Lawn, N.J., whose adult son Josh only reluctantly accepted her "Friend Request," says the early days of their online relationship were dicey.

"I'd write a comment, and literally no sooner would I type when the phone would ring and it would be Josh I guess he's on Facebook a lot and he'd be telling me, 'Mom, you can't make comments like this. My friends can't even believe we're friends,'" she says.

She says she checks his page about three times a week, and that some of his friends have even asked to be her friend. She accepted, only after checking with her son.

"Today we're pretty much down to where I' m allowed to 'like' something, and I'm allowed to go on his Facebook page and see what's going on with him," she says. "But that is it."

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Florida (Reuters) - A more conservative approach off the tee has Rory McIlroy off and running at the Players Championship.

The world number two from Northern Ireland had never broken par on the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass and missed the cut in three previous Players appearances, but he turned that around with a six-under-par 66 in Thursday's opening round.

"This course is just about getting your ball in play," McIlroy said after his morning round left him three shots behind early first-round leader Roberto Castro.

"Once you do that, the way I feel like I'm hitting my irons, I can take advantage of that."

The 24-year-old McIlroy, still aiming for his first victory of the year after switching his ball and clubs, said he was getting more consistent with his swing and applied lessons learned from previous disappointments at Sawgrass.

"I don't hit any drivers on the front nine," said McIlroy, who uses the big club on the two par-fives on the back nine and on the long par-four 14th.

"There is no point because I'm still going to reach the green with a three-wood off the tee if I want to."

McIlroy, who started from the 10th hole, was five under par through his first nine and birdied the par-five second hole to reach six-under before parring the rest of the way.

"I had a lot of good shots out there, a lot of iron shots that were 12, 15 feet away from the pin and I got myself a lot of looks for birdies," he said.

"I adopted maybe more of a conservative strategy off the tee this year, but once you put your ball on the fairway that means you can be more aggressive into the greens."

McIlroy has come close to putting it all together this season, tying for eighth at the WGC-Cadillac Championship, finishing second at the Texas Open and tying for 10th at last week's Wells Fargo Championship.

A third-round 79 marred an otherwise good run at the Masters last month, where he finished tied for 25th.

"This year it's sort of been a couple of good days and a bad day, then a couple of good ones again and another bad one. I'm starting to get the consistency back in it, which is a good thing," said McIlroy.

"I think it's just been a gradual step-by-step process over the past few weeks."

McIlroy said his poor track record at the Players took a load off his shoulders coming in.

"I feel like I've got the game to contend," he said. "I came in here with not much pressure, and just wanted to go out and play well, and that's what I've done so far."

Zynga management on Wednesday pleaded for more time for the turnaround effort, saying that the company's business, although stabilized, may not pick up until the latter half of the year.

Analysts said until the company showed more progress on its mobile strategy, it would have to fall back on its popular "Farmville" game and new games such as "Draw Something 2" to draw in and retain gamers and investors.

"Zynga keeps hinting at meaningful changes to come ... profitably, on mobile, but we will need to see it before we can give them credit for it," Macquarie Equities Research analyst Ben Schachter said.

The company now gets 22 percent of its revenue from its mobile platform, up from 12 percent a year earlier, but that share remains modest compared with similarly sized technology companies such as Twitter Inc, which gets more than half of its revenue from mobile users.

"Zynga is unlikely to ever dominate the mobile gaming market in the same way that it has the web-based gaming market for many years," Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter said.

The company aims to tap gamers on smartphones as it loses users on PCs but doubts remain over whether this can sustain its revenues and profits.

"Zynga's path toward renewed growth is uncertain and fraught with competitive and internal risks," Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson said in a research note to clients.

The company has also said it would tap into potentially lucrative new revenue streams, after it revised its once-lucrative business partnership with Facebook Inc.

Zynga has in recent months sought to establish a more independent network even at the risk of less visitor traffic from the social media giant and is looking to launch real-money casino games around the world, starting with Britain.

Analysts said though real-money gambling games is a good long-term opportunity, it is unrealistic to think it would boost Zynga's prospects anytime soon.

"Zynga must overcome significant competitive and legislative issues, among others. The near-term impact of real money gaming should be limited," Wedbush's Pachter said.

Shares of the company fell to $3.01 in early trading on Thursday. The company's stock, which listed on the Nasdaq in February 2011 at $10, has lost nearly a third of its value over the past year.

Weeks of speculation about the star cornerback's future ended Sunday when the New York Jets traded the three-time All-Pro to the Bucs in exchange for the 13th overall pick in this week's NFL draft and another selection next year.

Revis also agreed to six-year contract with his new team in a deal that his agents, Neil Schwartz and Jon Feinsod, confirmed is worth $96 million, with no guaranteed money.

"I been sitting around for the last hour trying to figure out what to say to the Jet Nation & I came up with this," Revis wrote on Twitter. "The six years I played for the New York Jets were unbelievable. I put my body on the line everyday & did everything could to help the team win. I experienced a lot & & learned a lot. The memories I had in New York I will keep dearly to my heart.

"I want to thank all the jets fans for making me feel welcome."

The Bucs are ecstatic about the opportunity to plug the seventh-year pro into a leaky secondary that general manager Mark Dominik and coach Greg Schiano began shoring up with the signing of free agent safety Dashon Goldson, an All-Pro in San Francisco last season.

Tampa Bay was one of a few teams with enough room under the salary cap to accommodate Revis' desire to become one of the highest-paid defensive players in the league. In exchange for giving the player the type of numbers he was looking for, though, Dominik insisted the deal not include guarantees that potentially could strap the team.

"We're thrilled. It's rare that you get a chance to add a player of this caliber to your football team. That's what motivated us," Dominik said, adding he would withhold further comment until a Monday news conference at the team's training facility.

The contract includes a yearly base salary of $13 million, plus $1.5 million annually in both roster and workout bonuses.

The Jets also receive a conditional fourth-round pick in next year's draft that will become a third-rounder if Revis, who is coming off a torn ligament in his left knee, is on the Buccaneers' roster on the third day of the 2014 league year.

Discussions between Dominik and new Jets general manager John Idzik heated up late last week, when the clubs agreed to compensation and Tampa Bay received permission to begin discussions with Revis' representatives on a contract.

The trade was completed Sunday about two hours after Revis arrived in Tampa by private jet to take a physical for the Bucs, who wanted to check out his surgically repaired knee.

Schiano drove his car onto the tarmac to meet the plane, greeted Revis and whisked the cornerback away to One Buccaneer Place. Soon after, the front page of the Buccaneers' official website posted a big picture of Revis in what appears to be a Tampa Bay jersey with the words: "Treasure Island. Darrelle Revis (CB). It's a Bucs Life."

Tampa Bay opens the season at that's right the Jets.

Trade talk involving Revis had been swirling for months, and all along the Bucs were thought to be the most serious suitor. In addition to having the league's worst pass defense last season, Tampa Bay was more than $32 million under the salary cap before landing a player generally regarded as the best cornerback in football.

Idzik said during a conference call that New York wasn't proactively shopping Revis, but Tampa Bay had "sincere and sustained" interest. Idzik insisted Revis' desire was to remain a member of the Jets and that the team shared that feeling, but the GM said "we ultimately came to the conclusion that this was the best thing to do for the Jets at this time."

Idzik added that there were several factors that went into the final decision to trade Revis, who coach Rex Ryan reiterated Sunday is "the best cornerback in football." The main barriers included the distance separating the Jets and Revis' representatives on a long-term extension, the time factor with the NFL draft coming up and the "degree of uncertainty" regarding the cornerback's health.

"Fitting a deal of historical proportions into our short-term and long-term plans is very difficult," Idzik said.

Revis was New York's first-round pick in 2007 after then-GM Mike Tannenbaum traded up to No. 14 to draft the former University of Pittsburgh star. Revis quickly established a reputation on the field as a shutdown cornerback, routinely holding wide receivers to quiet games and causing quarterbacks to shy away from his side of the field. He was considered by many to be so dominant at his position that he earned the nickname "Revis Island" for leaving opposing wide receivers stranded.

The deal gives the Jets two picks in the first round they already had the ninth selection when the draft begins Thursday, meaning Idzik will be busy early in the first round.

The trade leaves Antonio Cromartie as the Jets' top cornerback, a role he flourished in last season with Revis sidelined by a knee injury. And 2010 first-rounder Kyle Wilson mostly likely would be stepping in as the other starter.

"We're a football team that has a No. 1 corner," said Ryan, who said he and Idzik have been "joined at the hip" and he was involved in the decision-making process. "We're fortunate to have Antonio Cromartie."

For the Bucs, adding Revis improves a secondary that already includes cornerback Eric Wright and safeties Goldson and Mark Barron. Tampa Bay finished last in pass defense last season, coming within 38 yards of allowing the most yardage through the air in league history.

The 27-year-old Revis was entering the last season of a four-year contract he signed in 2010, and was looking for a big payday. A clause in that deal prevented the Jets from using the franchise or transition tag on him next year, so he likely would have become a free agent in 2014.

Revis was the subject of rampant trade rumors since last season ended as the Jets weighed whether to try to sign him to a contract extension, lose him to free agency next offseason or deal him for high draft picks.

"It became quite evident to us that there was a substantial difference between Darrelle's view of his value and ours," Idzik said. "We felt there would have to be a significant change on either side in order to create a path toward reaching an agreeable deal for either side."

Complicating things was the fact Revis is coming off a serious injury. He tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee last September against Miami, and had surgery the next month.

"It definitely muddies the water a little bit," Idzik said.

Revis has been rehabbing since, and has indicated in interviews he expects to be ready for the start of the regular season.

With Revis' contract status still in limbo, many predicted the two sides would have a repeat of the tough negotiations that marked previous discussions and led to two holdouts and nearly a third last summer. Instead, Idzik made a move with an eye on the franchise's future and not going empty-handed by letting Revis walk as a free agent next offseason.

"We wanted to come up with a decision that was the best for the New York Jets," owner Woody Johnson said. "And that's the decision we arrived at. And I think it was the correct one."

Hennes & Mauritz (H&M), the world's second-biggest apparel retailer after Zara owner Inditex, plans to expand its sports collection early next year to help broaden its offering and boost sales.

Olympics organizers say billions of people in over 200 countries watch the games. A team's kit can be as much a talking point as its success on track and field and can have an impact among viewers worldwide.

H&M said it would create outfits for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Sochi 2014, and the Summer Olympics and Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro 2016.

It will also provide outfits for leisure and training in the Olympic village in a deal signed with the Swedish Olympic committees, the company said in a statement.

The Swedish athletes will give input to H&M's expanded sports range and a selection of clothes designed for the Olympic teams will be sold in stores and online around the time of the games, a H&M spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

The Olympics have developed a tradition of attracting famous designers and apparel retailers.

At the 2012 London summer games, Ralph Lauren designed the U.S. team uniforms, while UK high street fashion retailer Next and designer Stella McCartney clothed the British team.

H&M already has connections with the sporting world, providing Czech tennis player Tomas Berdych with his on-court kit this year.

It plans to develop a tennis-wear collection with Berdych and has developed an underwear collection with British soccer star David Beckham.

HONOLULU (AP) -- Hawaii's public school teachers overwhelmingly approved a new labor agreement on Wednesday night, their first in nearly two years since their last contract expired.

The Hawaii State Teachers Association said 70 percent of teachers voted in statewide polls Wednesday night nearly all in favor of the four-year deal.

Union President Wil Okabe said the goal was to provide an equitable and fair contract that will attract the best teachers.

"Through sign waving, emails, letters and phone calls, HSTA members have shown unwavering commitment to education, putting pressure on the State to settle the contract in the best interests of the teachers and their students," Okabe said in a statement.

Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie praised the agreement as a "positive milestone" for public education in the state.

"We can now move forward as partners in transforming education for the benefit of our students and the entire state," Abercrombie said.

The new deal restores a previous 5 percent pay cut and gives teachers a 3 percent raise on top of that in July. Teachers will get raises of 3 percent and 3.2 percent in following years. They'll also have a say in statewide decisions about evaluations.

The contract takes effect July 1. The last contract expired in June 2011, and teachers have been working under a last, best and final offer.

Educators nationwide have been paying attention to what happens in Hawaii the 10th largest school system in the nation and the only statewide district in the country as Hawaii grapples with the controversial issue of educator evaluations. Many teachers are skeptical about evaluations, which have been a sticking point in the contract. Teachers are critical about using student performance in evaluations and determining compensation.

This vote comes after teachers rejected a contract offer last year. Then, in an unusual move, they tried to pressure the state to accept it later by voting on it again and approving it, 66 percent to 34 percent.

The union held several information sessions on details of the deal since the union and the state came to an agreement last month, after seeking help from a federal mediator.

Mililani High School teacher Amy Perruso planned to vote in favor of the deal, but not wholeheartedly.

"I feel really ambivalent," she said. "I think a lot of teachers feel as though they really don't have any viable options."

She said she continues to have doubts that the state can properly implement an effective and fair evaluation system.

Evaluations will "increase the anxiety levels of teachers who do the hardest work, the teachers who work with students who are struggling," she said. "The students who are best supported and best prepared for school, for the most part, go to private schools."

Okabe said teachers need to understand evaluations aren't only based on test scores and that the new deal allows for teachers to be part of the committee that crafts the evaluation system.

"This evaluation system will address how we can improve teaching in Hawaii," he said. "Evaluations should not be something we should be looking at as a punitive measure."

While some schools are already using evaluations under a pilot program, most teachers will see them starting in the 2015 school year. Teachers fresh out of college will be evaluated starting in July, Okabe said.

Okabe said another attractive feature of the deal is the health insurance language. He said it represents savings of at least 20 percent, depending on the plan a teacher selects.

Teachers are now too tired to fight and can't afford to strike, Perruso said.

"We'll have a contract," she said. "In that sense, it's better than no contract."

The agreement needed 50 percent plus one votes to be ratified.

OSLO (Reuters) - Climate change could get worse quickly if huge amounts of extra heat absorbed by the oceans are released back into the air, scientists said after unveiling new research showing that oceans have helped mitigate the effects of warming since 2000.

Heat-trapping gases are being emitted into the atmosphere faster than ever, and the 10 hottest years since records began have all taken place since 1998. But the rate at which the earth's surface is heating up has slowed somewhat since 2000, causing scientists to search for an explanation for the pause.

Experts in France and Spain said on Sunday that the oceans took up more warmth from the air around 2000. That would help explain the slowdown in surface warming but would also suggest that the pause may be only temporary and brief.

"Most of this excess energy was absorbed in the top 700 meters (2,300 ft) of the ocean at the onset of the warming pause, 65 percent of it in the tropical Pacific and Atlantic oceans," they wrote in the journal Nature Climate Change.

Lead author Virginie Guemas of the Catalan Institute of Climate Sciences in Barcelona said the hidden heat may return to the atmosphere in the next decade, stoking warming again.

"If it is only related to natural variability then the rate of warming will increase soon," she told Reuters.

Caroline Katsman of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, an expert who was not involved in the latest study, said heat absorbed by the ocean will come back into the atmosphere if it is part of an ocean cycle such as the "El Nino" warming and "La Nina" cooling events in the Pacific.

She said the study broadly confirmed earlier research by her institute but that it was unlikely to be the full explanation of the warming pause at the surface, since it only applied to the onset of the slowdown around 2000.

THRESHOLD

The pace of climate change has big economic implications since almost 200 governments agreed in 2010 to limit surface warming to less than 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 F) above pre-industrial levels, mainly by shifting from fossil fuels.

Surface temperatures have already risen by 0.8 C. Two degrees is widely seen as a threshold for dangerous changes such as more droughts, mudslides, floods and rising sea levels.

Some governments, and skeptics that man-made climate change is a big problem, argue that the slowdown in the rising trend shows less urgency to act. Governments have agreed to work out, by the end of 2015, a global deal to combat climate change.

Last year was ninth warmest since records began in the 1850s, according to the U.N.'s World Meteorological Organization, and 2010 was the warmest, just ahead of 1998. Apart from 1998, the 10 hottest years have all been since 2000.

Guemas's study, twinning observations and computer models, showed that natural La Nina weather events in the Pacific around the year 2000 brought cool waters to the surface that absorbed more heat from the air. In another set of natural variations, the Atlantic also soaked up more heat.

"Global warming is continuing but it's being manifested in somewhat different ways," said Kevin Trenberth, of the U.S. National Center for Atmospheric Research. Warming can go, for instance, to the air, water, land or to melting ice and snow.

Warmth is spreading to ever deeper ocean levels, he said, adding that pauses in surface warming could last 15-20 years.

"Recent warming rates of the waters below 700 meters appear to be unprecedented," he and colleagues wrote in a study last month in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

The U.N. panel of climate scientists says it is at least 90 percent certain that human activities - rather than natural variations in the climate - are the main cause of warming in recent decades.
