Because those children are poor at expressing themselves in words,

I guess they end up using violence against thier peers and teachers.

However, I wonder what has changed them so drastically?

The Ministry of Education should do more research on this issue and make a plan to deal with it.

That's right.

I think family financial problems caused by the recent recession must be huge stresses for children right now.

So their emotional instability is also a factor in this issue.

Besides, teachers are increasingly occupied with administrative or non-teaching related work and they have no time to deal with at-risk children individually.

Keita:

Well, the rise in school violence has become a global issue.

Although school violence is increasing in Japan,

it may not be as bad as in other countries.

For example, in the U.S.,

I heard that there are actually armed guards in many high school

as well as metal detectors for finding guns and knives.

Compared with that, Japan is much safer and better off.

Right?

Becky:

Keita, chill !

It's nonsense to talk about which country is better.

Rather, we should try to find solutions to save our children.

When I taught at a juinior high school in Saitama,

I saw many parents who didn't make enough effort

to understand their children or support them emotionally.

If your parents didn't raise you to be respectful, then you won't be.

Sean:

Exactly.

When it comes to problem kids in schools,

I think the parents hold most of the blame.

If parents don't care about teaching descipline in the home,

their children certainly won't learn anything about it.

Obviously, if those kids come to school with stress developed at home,

they will more often be involved in bullying or viorent acts.

What do you think about that, Yuko?

Yuko:

I agree with you.

I assume that many parents fail to prepare their children for life

and teachers don't have enough time to deal with the problem.

If this is the case, we should create a sort of support network to properly

watch over children in and out of school in our communities.

In that way, anybody, not only teachers and parents, can help children express

their emotions in non-violent ways.
