The ISM manufacturing survey for the U.S. showed a rebound in June thanks to new orders and higher production. The increase to 50.9 points from May's 49 shows the sector is expanding once again. A reading above 50 suggests growth, while those below indicate contraction.

The survey showed employment in the sector remained weak, however, suggesting companies are still cautious about the future.

The survey boosted stock markets as investors estimated it was strong enough to show the recovery is on track, but not so strong as to encourage the Federal Reserve to start ending its monetary stimulus program ahead of time.

In Europe, Germany's DAX rose 0.3 percent to close at 7,983.92 while France's CAC-40 gained 0.8 percent to 3,767.48. Britain's FTSE 100 rose 1.5 percent to 6,307.78.

On Wall Street, the Dow was up 1.1 percent to 15,070.68 while the broader S&P 500 was 1.2 percent higher at 1,625.53.

"This rebound in the ISM and moderate employment growth in June would leave the Fed on track to start tapering" its bond purchases in September, said Paul Dales, analyst at Capital Economics.

U.S. economic indicators have been one of the main market drivers in recent weeks as investors gauge when the Fed is likely to wind down its stimulus.

After a volatile few weeks, Fed officials are trying to calm investors' concerns about the central bank's planned reduction in monthly purchases of financial assets. Those purchases are aimed at stimulating the economy by pushing down market interest rates, and investors worry that as the economy improves, a pullback could deprive them of cheap borrowing rates.

In that vein, the U.S. monthly jobs report due Friday will get huge attention as it is the most closely watched indicator for the world's largest economy.

In Europe, economic indicators remain more mixed. Unemployment across the 17-country eurozone rose to another record high, at 12.1 percent in May. The number shows the massive amount of work governments have to address the social impact that their debt reduction policies have had.

A separate report, however, showed an improvement in manufacturing activity in Britain, France and Italy and stabilization in Spain.

Markets had been buoyed earlier in the day, during Asian trading hours, by the Bank of Japan's closely-watched quarterly "tankan" survey for June. It showed that the index for major manufacturers rose to positive 4 points from negative 8 in March, the first positive figure since September 2011. A positive reading means more companies are optimistic than pessimistic.

The report, along with another survey showing consumer prices stopped falling for the first time in seven months, suggests companies are reacting positively to the weaker yen and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's policies to revive the economy.

That helped temper concerns by a separate report showing China's manufacturing decelerated in June for a second month. The survey by HSBC Corp. and a Chinese industry group declined to 48.2 points from May's 49.2. The drop reflects in part a tightening in lending conditions as Beijing sought to stabilize the credit market.

Tokyo's Nikkei 225 rose 1.3 percent to close at 13,852.50 while China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index gained a more moderate 0.8 percent to 1,998.24.

Earlier in Asia, smaller stock markets mostly fell on concern that China's manufacturing slowdown might hurt their economies. Sydney's ASX/S&P 200 lost 1.9 percent to 4,710.30.

Taiwan's Taiex shed 0.3 percent to 8,036 while South Korea's Kospi fell 0.4 percent to 1,855.73. Singapore, Bangkok and Manila gained while Hong Kong was closed for a holiday.

In other markets, the benchmark crude oil contract for August delivery was up $1.12 at $97.68 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The dollar gained to 99.67 yen from 99.11 yen late Friday. The euro rose to $1.3061 from $1.3013.

The space shuttles on public display include NASA's three space-flown orbiters Atlantis, Discovery and Endeavour as well as the Enterprise, a prototype shuttle used for landing glide tests but never flew in space. []

Here's where to find NASA's space shuttles this summer and what you need to know when you visit them:

Atlantis: Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, NASA, Cape Canaveral, Fla.

Cost of admission: A viewing of the shuttle is included in the price of admission to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex: $50 for adults, $40 for children (ages 3-11).

Why to visit: Thewas the last to fly in space before the fleet was retired in 2011 and the final orbiter to be put on public display. Atlantis flew 33 missions, including secret missions for the U.S. military, flights to space stations and missions to launch several spacecraft into orbit.

Atlantis was named after a ship that sailed for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in Massachusetts between 1930 and 1966. That vessel was the first seafaring ship to image the seafloor using electronic sounding technology.

Spanish doctor Eufemiano Fuentes, the central figure in the trial that followed a probe into a doping ring in cycling, was given a one-year prison term last month for endangering public health.

The judge ordered the destruction of evidence including bags of blood possibly belonging to athletes from sports other than cycling.

The decision disappointed sports and anti-doping bodies, denting hopes that the case would unmask other athletes involved in illegal doping, and prompted widespread condemnation.

"The UCI can confirm that it will appeal the decision...not to release to the UCI and other anti-doping organizations the more than 200 bags of blood and other evidence gathered in police raids in 2006, which were presented in the trial of Spanish doctor Eufemiano Fuentes," the UCI said in a statement.

The Spanish Anti-Doping organisation (AEA) has already decided to appeal against the decision, while the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has until May 17 to make a decision.

Fuentes, who protested his innocence, said in his opening testimony that he had clients in sports including soccer, tennis, athletics and boxing.

The issue isn't settled yet; Senate Democrats are pushing for a vote on July 10 to retroactively bring the rate back down. Republicans favor tying student loan rates to the markets instead of setting a federal lending rate. As it stands now, college students can expect to pay an additional $2,600 on their loans.

For those in school, the rate increase is just another part of what is turning out to be an increasingly bleak financial future. Here is what college students have to look forward to after they graduate.

1. Staggering student loan debtEven before the rate increase, Americansby nearly $1 trillion in outstanding student loan debt. Around 38.8 million people owe an average of $24,803 for pursuing a college degree.

Why are students taking out such big loans? Because it's more expensive than ever to go to college. Board and tuition costs jumped 42 percent at public universities over the last decade, with private schools seeing an increase of 31 percent.

To put that in historical context, the cost of college has increased 1,120 percent since records were first kept in 1978, risingthan the consumer price index, which measures inflation.

This wouldn't be a big deal if companies were gladly hiring young people without a college degree. The problem, however, is that the "undergraduate degree has become the new high school diploma," as one debt-addled graduate told .

2. Dim employment prospectsEven when shelling out tens of thousands of dollars for college, graduates have little guarantee of a job afterwards. As of March, thefor young college graduates was 8.8 percent, compared to 5.7 percent before the Great Recession hit. (They fare much better than those with only a high school degree, who suffer from 29.9 percent unemployment).

Even if they find a job, there is a good chance it doesn't pay much. Forty-five percent of college grads between 22 and 27 years old are "underemployed" — meaning they have jobs that don't require the college degrees they paid so much for.

"You always have a lot of young college grads working as baristas," Heidi Shierholz, an economist with the Economic Policy Institute, told . "The reason it is so high right now is part and parcel of the overall weakness in the labor market."

Nope. Studies show that 70 percent of overall wage growth occurs in the first 10 years of a person's career. The least advantaged students who graduate during a recession "suffer permanent earnings losses and are permanently relegated to lower wages," according to a study from the . Even graduates with degrees in high-earning fields take a hit, requiring 10 years for their salaries to .

The combination of low wages and high student debt is bad news for the U.S. economy as a whole. Young people attempting to climb out of debt aren't likely toon homes or cars.

which some have hailed as the next "" is currently located too near the sun to be seen from Earth. Since June 22, the comet has been less than 18 degrees from the sun and therefore cannot be seen against a dark sky. Your closed fist held at arm's length covers about 10 degrees of the sky.

Currently located against the stars of the zodiacal constellation of Gemini, or the twins, the comet is progressing slowly eastward and will cross over into the boundaries of Cancer, the crab, on Aug. 1. A week later, on Aug. 8, the comet will have moved out as far as 18 degrees from the sun and once again will be evident against a dark sky. []

Comet ISON has brightened little, if at all, since the start of 2013, and when last seen was hovering at magnitude 15.5, making it nearly 4,000 times too dim to be seen with the unaided eye.

To readily observe the dim, fuzzy blob of ISON prior to June 22, you would have needed a very dark sky and awith at least 20 inches (50.8 centimeters) of aperture, if not more.Comet ISON is too close to the bright twilight, but that will change after the first week of August as ISON then a morning object begins a slow emergence into the morning sky.

Both amateur and professional astronomers will have their fingers crossed that by early August ISON will have shown significant brightening since it was last seen in late June.

Mercury will be passing 4 degrees south of the comet on Aug. 8 and might be used to steer an observer toward ISON. But, by then, the comet will still be rather faint probably about magnitude 13, although it might reach to magnitude 11 or even 10 by the end of August. Astronomers use a number-based magnitude scale to determine the . The lower the magnitude number, the brighter the object.

With Comet ISON'sbrightnessapparently stalled as it disappeared into the glare of the sun, it's anybody's guess just how bright the object will shine when it reappears in early August.

NAIROBI (Reuters) - The Kenyan shilling was steady against the dollar on Monday, while shares continued their losing streak, driven by the prospect of an easing of U.S. economic stimulus measures and concerns the government may bring back a capital gains tax.

Nairobi's benchmark NSE-20 Share Index closed down 18.95 points, or 0.4 percent, at 4,579.21 points, the selling driven mostly by foreign investors.

The index fell 8 percent in June.

Among the stocks that closed lower on Monday were mobile phone service operator Safaricom, which ended down 1.5 percent at 6.45 shillings, and Standard Chartered Bank Kenya, which fell 2.4 percent to 280.00 shillings.

Beer maker East African Breweries Ltd. dipped 0.6 percent to 331.00 shillings.

"Generally the market is still on a downward trend," said Ronald Lugalia, an analyst at Afrika Investment Bank. "Foreign investors were net sellers. Generally it's just profit-taking, and there is no significant demand to match up the supply that is coming into the market."

At close of trade at 1300 GMT, commercial banks quoted the shilling at 85.75/95 to the dollar, compared with Friday's close of 85.80/90.

"There was not much demand... I think we will start seeing slight (dollar) demand coming back (in coming days)," said Ignatius Chicha, head of trading at Citibank.

Other traders said there was some possibility that the shilling would strengthen, since most importers had already filled their end-month dollar requirements, curbing demand and taking pressure off the local currency.

"We are still biased towards a slightly stronger shilling as demand for dollars falls," said Nahashon Mungai, a trader at Equity Bank.

Mungai said the 0.3 percent gain recorded by the stock market in Friday's session could signal the end of June's bearish run, pulling in foreign investors who could help boost the shilling.

Government bonds worth a total 350.8 million shillings were traded on the securities exchange, down from 1.87 billion shillings traded on Friday.

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - It appears that Jimmy Fallon is a go to replace Jay Leno as host of NBC's "The Tonight Show" - and that the long-running late-night offering will be packing its bags for a cross-country move.

According to the New YorkTimes, NBC has "made a commitment" to Fallon, who currently hosts the network's "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon," airing after Leno. (The TImes says, however, that a deal has not yet been struck.)

The Times says that NBC is also building a studio in the network's New York headquarters at 30 Rockefeller Plaza to accommodate the switch in hosts. (Fallon currently tapes "Late Night" in New York; "Tonight" was originally filmed in New York, before moving to Burbank, Calif., in 1972.)

As for when Fallon would assume Leno's duties, the Times reports that the transition is slated for a fall 2014 timetable, when Leno's contract expires.

A spokeswoman for NBC has not yet responded to TheWrap's request for comment.

Leno took a couple of pointed jabs at NBC brass on his show this week, after a report that he and NBC entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt had an argument over Leno's previous "Tonight Show" digs about the network's ratings.

"Well you know the whole legend of St. Patrick, right?" Leno cracked during his monolog on Monday night's show. "St. Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland, and then they came here to the United States and became NBC executives. It's a fascinating, fascinating story."

Tuesday night found Leno landing another shot at NBC's expense, over - uh-huh - the network's ratings.

"Did you hear about this? A 28-year-old woman from Serbia has a rare brain condition where she sees everything upside down," Leno joked. "The good news? She's now been given a job at the White House as President Obama's economic adviser. Isn't that crazy? It's unbelievable. She sees everything upside down. In fact, she thinks NBC is at the top of the ratings."

Dr. H. Wayne Carver tells The Hartford Courant (http://bit.ly/Yk1ohW ) that he wants to know if there is any identifiable disease associated with the behavior of the shooter, Adam Lanza. He is working with the University of Connecticut department of genetics.

Paula Levy, a mediator who worked with Lanza's parents during their divorce, has said Lanza was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, an autism-like disorder.

Carver says Asperger's is not associated with violent behavior. He says he's not considering it as a reason for Lanza's rampage on Friday.

Carver is awaiting toxicology testing results for Lanza and other information.

Lanza fatally shot himself as first responders approached the school Friday morning.

Obama, expanding on an initiative he addressed in his State of the Union speech last month, said the United States must shift its cars and trucks entirely off oil to avoid perpetual fluctuations in gas prices. Citing policies that already require automakers to increase gas mileage, he said he expects that by the middle of the next decade, Americans will only have to fill up their cars half as often.

"We've set some achievable but ambitious goals," Obama said, speaking at Argonne National Laboratory outside Chicago

"The only way to break this cycle of spiking gas prices the only way to break that cycle for good is to shift our cars entirely, our cars and trucks, off oil," the president said.

Friday's speech, with its focus on energy, was designed to draw attention to what the White House says is one of Obama's top agenda items for his second term. That focus, however, has been overshadowed as the administration and Congress work on an immigration overhaul, gun legislation and deficit-reduction measures.

Obama cast his proposal as not only a clean energy plan, but as one meant to create opportunities for economic growth.

"I want the next great job-creating breakthroughs, whether it's in energy or nanotechnology or bio-engineering , I want those breakthroughs to be right here in the United States of America, creating American jobs and maintaining our technological lead," he said.

Obama spoke from inside Argonne's Advanced Photon Source, a ring-shaped facility a mile and a half around. The facility acts as a giant extra-bright X-ray that allows scientists to look inside objects at the atomic level.

The initiative, proposing to spend $200 million a year on research, would be paid for with revenue from federal oil and gas leases on offshore drilling and would not add to the deficit.

The money would fund research on "breakthrough" technologies such as batteries for electric cars and biofuels made from switch grass or other materials. Researchers also would look to improve use of natural gas as a fuel for cars and trucks.

Obama's motorcade passed a couple dozen protesters standing in the rain at the Argonne entrance, protesting against the proposed Keystone XL pipeline, which would transport oil from Canada's tar sands to Texas Gulf Coast refineries. The Obama administration is considering whether to clear the project. White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters aboard Air Force one that "there's no question" that the types of green energy initiatives the president was talking about at Argonne would have more impact on climate change than whether Keystone is built.

"Thousands of miles of pipelines have been built since President Obama took office inside the United States of America and it hasn't had a measurable impact on climate change" Earnest said. "But what has had an impact, measurable impact, on climate change has been, for example, the car rule that the president has put in place that has greatly increased fuel efficiency and reduced carbon emissions."

Inside the national lab, Obama got a firsthand look at some of the cutting-edge vehicle research, including a room that can go to extreme temperatures to test the impact on fuel efficiency. He talked to engineers working on electric car batteries and on an engine that runs on diesel and gasoline to reduce fuel costs.

"We want to keep on funding them," the president said as he looked at the engine, developed with public and private funding from Chrysler. "That's what I'm trying to tell Congress."

The proposal is modeled after a plan submitted by a group of business executives and former military leaders who are committed to reducing U.S. oil dependence. The group, called Securing America's Future Energy, or SAFE, is headed by FedEx Corp. Chairman and CEO Frederick W. Smith and retired Marine Corps Gen. P.X. Kelley.

Creation of the trust would require congressional approval at a time of partisan divide over energy issues. Republicans have pushed to expand oil and gas drilling on federal land and water, while Obama and many Democrats have worked to boost renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power.

There were signs agreement may be possible. Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski has called it "an idea I may agree with."

Murkowski, senior Republican on the Senate Energy Committee, did not fully endorse the plan, which is similar to one she has proposed to use revenue from drilling for oil and natural gas on public lands that previously were off-limits to energy production to pay for research on new energy technologies.

White House officials said the president's proposal would not require expansion of drilling to federal lands or water where it is now prohibited. Instead, they are counting on increased production from existing sites, along with efficiencies from an administration plan to streamline drilling permits. The government collects more than $6 billion a year in royalties from production on federal lands and waters.

A spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner said Obama needs to expand drilling to get his support.

"For this proposal to even be plausible, oil and gas leasing on federal land would need to increase dramatically," the spokesman, Brendan Buck, said. "Unfortunately, this administration has consistently slowed, delayed and blocked American energy production."

Obama's push for the energy trust came as the Environmental Protection Agency released a report Friday indicating that fuel economy standards rose last year by 1.4 miles per gallon, the largest annual increase since EPA started keeping track. The agency said the improvement was due to better availability of high-performing cars and more options for consumers.

A spokeswoman for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers said the group supports efforts to make diverse fuels more available but said improved transportation infrastructure, such as additional charging stations for electric cars and greater availability of clean diesel fuel, also is needed.
