U.S.-Israeli Exalenz said on Monday BreathID Hp offers a specific, non-invasive test for H. pylori.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, approximately two thirds of the world's population is infected with H. pylori, which is often undiagnosed and untreated. It is the leading cause of peptic ulcers and is known to increase the risk of gastric cancer.

Exalenz also said it has formed in the United States a new direct sales and clinical support organization, designed to better address customer needs.

BreathID Hp is a compact system that can fit on a small table or countertop and is compatible with electronic medical records (EMR).

The test takes 10-15 minutes to complete and deliver results, enabling the physician to immediately prescribe treatment if necessary. The system can also be used to test if the H. pylori bacteria has been eradicated.

O'Bannon and his lawyers asked a federal court judge to turn their antitrust lawsuit into a class action, representing thousands of former and current college athletes. The lawsuit demands that the NCAA find a way to cut players in on the billions of dollars earned by college sports from live broadcasts, memorabilia sales, video games and in other areas.

U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken didn't rule on either the merits of O'Bannon's case or his demands to turn the case into a class action. It could take weeks, even months, before Wilken rules.

Instead, she ordered O'Bannon's lawyers to revise the lawsuit to fix some legal technicalities, including explicating adding current players to the lawsuit. Lawyer Michael Hausfeld said he will file a new lawsuit that includes current players, but will seek to keep their names confidential.

"They are afraid of retaliation," Hausfeld told the court.

NCAA lawyer Greg Curtner is against certifying the lawsuit as a class action, arguing that the claims of thousands of collegiate athletes are too different to be treated the same. For instance, certain athletes bring in more revenue than others and have different legal claims at stake.

The NCAA argues that many of the athletes receive scholarships in exchange for playing sports and to pay student athletes would ruin amateur athletics. To pay athletes more than that would ruin collegiate sports, the NCAA argues.

The debate over compensating college players is almost as old as the NCAA, founded in 1906. Amateurs have been expected to compete for free and the love of sport or at least the cost of a scholarship and the pursuit of an education.

The NCAA is steadfast in its position that student-athletes are prohibited from receiving payment for participating in sports. It also says it has done nothing wrong in marketing itself for the benefit of its member schools and will continue to vigorously contest the lawsuits

But the NCAA's revenues have skyrocketed in recent years it recently signed a $10.8 billion, 14-year television deal for basketball and so have the demands of athletes to share in the money.

"I'm doing this for change," O'Bannon said outside court.

The star of the NCAA 1995 basketball champion UCLA Bruins traveled from his Las Vegas home to attend the hearing Thursday.

He said he first became aware that others were profiting from his image in 1995, when he visited a friend's house and was shown an avatar resembling O'Bannon playing for the 1995 Bruins in the game. Two years later, he filed a lawsuit that focused attention from lawmakers, college administrators and others on just how much money the NCAA and its member schools earn each year.

The schools argue that money-making sports like football and baseball help support sports such as volleyball and gymnastics with smaller fan bases.

That may be, O'Bannon said, but he still thinks student athletes who help generate the revenues are entitled to a cut.

"I believe the kids coming through the system can do better than I did," he said. "I never thought this lawsuit would get this big, but now that it has, I hope it forces big changes."

The Austrian parachutist known as "Fearless Felix" reached 843.6 mph, according to the official numbers released Monday. That's equivalent to Mach 1.25, or 1.25 times the speed of sound.

His top speed initially was estimated last October at 834 mph, or Mach 1.24.

Either way, he became the first human to break the sound barrier with only his body. He wore a pressurized suit and jumped from a capsule hoisted by a giant helium balloon over New Mexico.

Baumgartner was supersonic for a half-minute "quite remarkable," according to Brian Utley, the official record-keeping official who was present for the Oct. 14 feat. His heart rate remained below 185 beats a minute, and his breathing was fairly steady.

The leap was from an altitude of 127,852 feet. That's 248 feet lower than original estimates.

"He jumped from a little bit lower, but he actually went a little bit faster, which was pretty exciting," said Art Thompson, technical project director for the Red Bull-sponsored project.

"It's fun for us to see reaching Mach speeds and proving out a lot of the safety systems," Thompson said in a phone interview from his aerospace company in Lancaster, Calif.

Thompson said everything pretty much unfolded as anticipated, with no surprises in the final report. The updated records were provided by Utley, official observer for the National Aeronautic Association's contest and records board. Utley was in Roswell, N.M., for Baumgartner's grand finale jump.

In the foreword of the 71-page report, Baumgartner said he never imagined how many people would share in his dream to make a supersonic free fall from so high.

Some 52 million people watched You Tube's live stream of the exploit.

The scientific and engineering experts who helped bring him back alive "broke boundaries in their own fields just as surely as I broke the sound barrier," Baumgartner wrote.

Baumgartner shattered the previous record for a free fall plunge, made by Joe Kittinger, an Air Force officer, in 1960. Kittinger did not quite reach supersonic speed during his jump from 19.5 miles up.

(Reuters) - Despite two failed late-stage trials of its experimental Alzheimer's drug solanezumab, Eli Lilly and Co said on Friday it plans to run yet another study, this time focusing only on mild patients who appeared to respond to the treatment.

And the company will take extra steps to ensure it is testing actual Alzheimer's patients by pre-screening them with its imaging agent Amyvid to ensure they have deposits of the protein beta amyloid that is linked with the disease.

Solanezumab, which patients take by infusion, works by blocking the beta-amyloid protein that forms plaques in the brain signaling the onset of the disease. Bapineuzumab, a similar drug developed by Pfizer Inc, failed its main trial goals last year.

Lilly's two earlier trials of solanezumab had involved patients with mild to moderate symptoms. Combined data from those trials last summer showed the drug slowed cognitive decline by 34 percent in patients who started out with only mild symptoms, but without slowing declines in their ability to perform everyday tasks.

Lilly said the new Phase III trial will consist of 2,100 people, considerably more than the total of about 1,300 with mild Alzheimer's in the earlier two Phase III studies.

"Since Lilly saw a signal of benefit in the mild patients in the completed trials, it makes a lot of sense for them to simply zoom in on that group in this new trial," said Steven Ferris, director of the Alzheimer's Disease Center at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York. "It's a roll of the dice again, but they'll get a definitive answer."

Ferris said Lilly's decision to forge ahead with another trial was a bold move, but one worth taking because no current treatments slow progression of the disease.

"That's what we need."

The Indianapolis company plans to begin enrolling patients in the new study, called Expedition 3, before the end of September, and noted that patients would be treated for 18 months. But Lilly declined to speculate when it will have final data from the high-profile study.

An estimated 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's, the most common cause of dementia. More than 38 million people worldwide are believed to have dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, and those numbers are expected to rise as more people live longer.

WRONG PATIENTS SCREENED

Eric Siemers, senior medical director of Lilly's Alzheimer's program, said an estimated 25 percent of patients in the two earlier Expedition trials might not actually have had beta-amyloid deposits or Alzheimer's disease, so solanezumab could not have helped them.

He said many patients were enrolled in those trials on the basis of symptoms, without undergoing sophisticated diagnostic procedures now available to confirm the presence of beta-amyloid deposits.

In addition to using Amyvid, its new radioactive imaging agent, Siemers said the company will also look at biochemical measures in the spinal fluid can also help assess whether patients have Alzheimer's.

"This pre-screening will take Lilly longer to enroll patients, but is a wise move," Sanford Bernstein analyst Tim Anderson said in a research note. He said the earliest the drug is likely to reach the market, assuming the trial succeeds, is late 2017.

Maria Carrillo, vice president of scientific and medical affairs for the Alzheimer's Association, said the tighter screening will "strengthen" the new study. "When you're using an amyloid-based approach you want to make sure amyloid is there."

Lilly's renewed push behind solanezumab comes amid other recent setbacks for its Alzheimer's program.

Last month Lilly halted a mid-stage study of a different type of Alzheimer's treatment, from a class known as beta secretase, or BACE, inhibitors, after signs of potential liver toxicity. But the company said it remains interested in developing other BACE inhibitors.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services proposed guidelines that would deny reimbursement for Amyvid unless patients are taking part in one of several clinical trials in which the $3,000 test is being used.

In the meantime, two independent studies of solanezumab are just getting off the ground, and could shed further light on the drug's potential.

They involve a study of elderly patients who do not yet have symptoms of Alzheimer's but who have deposits of amyloid in their brains, and a study of patients with an inherited high risk of developing Alzheimer's.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Citing the power of artists and academics to open minds, President Barack Obama on Wednesday awarded 24 medals to people including "Star Wars" creator George Lucas and writer Joan Didion who he said touched his life and the lives of Americans.

"They challenge us to think and to question and to discover, to seek that inward significance," Obama said, awarding the winners of the National Medal of Arts and National Humanities Medal at a ceremony in the East Room of the White House.

This year's winners included filmmaker George Lucas, creator of "Star Wars," whom Obama applauded for transforming movies.

"I remember when I first saw 'Star Wars,'" Obama said. "There's a whole generation that thinks special effects always look like they do today. But it used to be you'd see, like, the string on the little model spaceships.

Obama, known for his love of basketball and football, seemed particularly tickled to award a medal to Frank Deford, the legendary sportswriter who has spent 50 years at Sports Illustrated magazine.

"Frank, I grew up reading Sports Illustrated, and I think it was very good for me," Obama said, to laughter.

He praised the winners for working hard and following their dreams against the odds.

One of the most poignant moments of the ceremony came when Obama strode to the edge of the stage to meet author Joan Didion, 78, frail and elegant, carefully lifting the thick red ribbon holding the palm-sized humanities medal over her neck.

"Today, decades into her career, she remains one of our sharpest and most respected observers of American politics and culture," Obama said, describing how Didion taught herself to read as her family moved frequently around the country with her father, who was an Army officer.

He cited the courage shown by Ernest Gaines, the descendent of Louisiana sharecroppers, who writes about the lives of African Americans, and blues and jazz musician Allen Toussaint, who helped revive his native New Orleans with music after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

Other medal winners included Herb Alpert, who made Latin music popular in the 1960s and co-founded of A&M Records, soprano Renee Fleming, playwright Tony Kushner and comedian Elaine May.

Andy Murray made it possible Sunday, winning his country's hallowed tennis tournament to become the first British man in 77 years to raise the trophy at the All England Club.

Yes, this was history, and Murray's 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 victory over top-seeded Novak Djokovic was a fitting close to nearly eight decades of British frustration in its own backyard: A straight-setter, yes, but a hard-fought, 3-hour, 9-minute affair filled with long, punishing rallies and a final game that may have felt like another 77 years, with Murray squandering three match points before finally putting it away after four deuces.

Certainly, the endgame must have felt like torture to the 15,000 watching on Centre Court, the thousands more watching on a big-screen TV on the grounds and, of course, the millions of British watching on TV.

"Imagine playing it," Murray said in his on-court interview.

But he closed it out on this cloudless, 80-degree day on tennis' most famous court. He put his name beside that of Fred Perry, the last British man to win Wimbledon, back in 1936.

Those words don't have to be written again.

"He's someone that I've obviously never met, but is quite relevant in my career really," Murray said.

The second-seeded Murray beat the best in Djokovic top-ranked and a six-time Grand Slam tournament winner known for both a mental and physical fitness built to handle what he faced Sunday: A crowd full of overheated partisans rooting against him, to say nothing of Murray himself.

"The atmosphere was incredible for him. For me, not so much, but this is what I expected," Djokovic said.

Since falling to Roger Federer in the final last year, Murray had shed some baggage by winning the Olympic gold medal on Centre Court, then following that with his first Grand Slam title at the U.S. Open.

The U.S. Open win ended a 76-year drought for the British in the Grand Slams.

This one? Even sweeter.

"The pinnacle of tennis," Murray called the Wimbledon win. "I worked so hard in that last game, the hardest few points I ever played in my life."

When he finally wrapped it up, he let his racket fall to the turf, took his hat off and pumped his fist toward the crowd. Later, he climbed to the guest box where his girlfriend, Kim Sears, and his coach, Ivan Lendl, were among those sweating this one out.

Born a week apart in May 1987 Djokovic in Belgrade when it was part of Yugoslavia, and Murray in Glasgow, Scotland these top two players came up together through the elite junior-tennis ranks and are now building the best tennis rivalry of the 2010s. This was their third meeting in the last four Grand Slam finals and all have been riveting affairs. Murray won a five-setter at the U.S. Open; Djokovic won in four at Australia; and this time, a three-setter at Wimbledon that felt like something more.

Djokovic went up a break in both the second and third sets and, both times, appeared to have wrested at least a bit of control and quieted a crowd that included Prime Minister David Cameron.

But Murray dug his way out both times. In the second set, he set up break point with a sharply angled forehand that Djokovic couldn't handle, and the Serb responded with a double-fault, one of four on the day.

In the third set, Murray lost four straight games to fall behind 4-2, but got the break back and eventually closed it out by winning the last four games as the roars from every corner of Centre Court grew louder.

"The atmosphere today was different to what I've experienced in the past," Murray said. "It was different to last year's final, for sure. And then, the end of the match, that was incredibly loud, very noisy. I've been saying it all week, but it does make a difference. Especially in a match as tough as that one, where it's extremely hot, brutal, long rallies, tough games. They help you get through it."

Trailing 5-4 in the third, Djokovic rushed out to the court after the break a man who seemingly wanted to get it over with. Murray quickly went ahead 40-0 and it looked like it was time to cue the Duke of Kent for the trophy presentation.

But the next few minutes felt like forever. Djokovic saved the first three championship points, then had three break opportunities of his own. Couldn't convert any. Then, finally, Murray put it away when Djokovic rifled a backhand into the net. A few minutes later, the 26-year-old Murray, was kissing the trophy.

How might things have progressed if Djokovic had pulled out that game?

"I don't know," was all he offered.

Djokovic came into the match on the heels of a 4-hour, 43-minute semifinal victory over Juan Martin del Potro in similarly parched conditions on Friday. He conceded that match took a lot out of him but "I've been in these situations before. I felt OK."

Indeed, he rarely wears out, but Murray and the linesmen combined for a one-two punch, and punctured the 2011 Wimbledon champion's typically calm, almost robotic, demeanor.

Murray's withering groundstrokes and his patience from behind the line helped him take the first set. Then slowly, Djokovic shifted his strategy, mixing in drop shots with frequent trips to the net neither of which are considered his specialty. He won 30 of 52 trips to the net, compared to 26 for 37 for his opponent.

"I wasn't patient enough in the moments when I should have been," Djokovic said.

The impatience resulted in 40 unforced errors against 31 winners an uncommonly average ratio for the world's top-ranked player compared to 36 winners and 21 unforced errors by Murray.

Meanwhile, Djokovic found himself in what, at times, felt like an ongoing dialogue with chair umpire Mohamed Lahyani, as a number of close calls went against him. Djokovic had used up all three of his second-set challenges by the middle of the eighth game. At the end of that game, after another close call on the baseline went against him, Djokovic raised his hands toward the heavens, showing another trace of frustration that rarely hits him.

Murray, meanwhile, kept his cool through it all, even if the sweat that drenched his Wimbledon-white shirt made it nearly see-through at times.

In addition to the trophy, Murray earned 1.6 million pounds ($2.4 million) and got that long-awaited invitation to the black-tie champion's dinner, set for later Sunday night.

"It was a privilege to watch @Andy_Murray making history at #Wimbledon, and making Britain proud," tweeted the Prime Minister.

Indeed, on this day, the hoorahs were coming from every corner of the kingdom.

"I can confirm," a Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said, "that the Queen has sent a private message to Andy Murray following his Wimbledon victory."

In a major speech at Georgetown University, Obama warned Americans of the deep and disastrous effects of climate change, urging them to take action before it's too late.

"As a president, as a father and as an American, I'm here to say we need to act," Obama said.

Obama announced he was directing his administration to launch the first-ever federal regulations on heat-trapping gases emitted by new and existing power plants "to put an end to the limitless dumping of carbon pollution."

Other aspects of the plan will boost renewable energy production on federal lands, increase efficiency standards and prepare communities to deal with higher temperatures.

Even before Obama unveiled his plan Tuesday, Republican critics in Congress were lambasting it as a job-killer that would threaten the economic recovery. Obama dismissed those critics, noting the same arguments have been used in the past when the U.S. has taken other steps to protect the environment.

"That's what they said every time," Obama said. "And every time, they've been wrong."

Obama touted America's strengths research, technology and innovation as factors that make the U.S. uniquely poised to take on the challenges of global warming. He mocked those who deny that humans are contributing to the warming of the planet, adding that he "doesn't have much patience" for anybody who refuses to acknowledge the problem.

"We don't have time for a meeting of the flat-earth society," Obama said.

Obama also offered a rare insight into his administration's deliberations on Keystone XL, an oil pipeline whose potential approval has sparked an intense fight between environmental activists and energy producers.

The White House has insisted the State Department is making the decision independently, but Obama said Tuesday he's instructing the department to approve it only if the project won't increase overall, net emissions of greenhouse gases.

"Allowing the Keystone pipeline to be built requires a finding that doing so would be in our nation's interests," Obama said. "Our national interest would be served only if this project does not significantly exacerbate the problem of carbon pollution."

Obama's far-reaching plan marks Obama's most prominent effort yet to deliver on a major priority he laid out in his first presidential campaign and recommitted to at the start of his second term: to fight climate change in the U.S. and abroad and prepare American communities for its effects. Environmental activists have been irked that Obama's high-minded goals never materialized into a comprehensive plan.

By expanding permitting on public lands, Obama hopes to generate enough electricity from renewable energy projects such as wind and solar to power the equivalent of 6 million homes by 2020, effectively doubling the electric capacity federal lands now produce, senior administration officials said. He'll also set a goal to install 100 megawatts of energy-producing capacity at federal housing projects by the end of the decade.

Obama also announced $8 billion in federal loan guarantees to spur investment in technologies that can keep carbon dioxide produced by power plants from being released into the atmosphere.

But the linchpin of Obama's plan is the controls on new and existing power plants. Forty percent of U.S. carbon dioxide emissions, and one-third of greenhouse gases overall, come from electric power plants, according to the federal Energy Information Administration. The Obama administration already has proposed controls on new plants, but those controls have been delayed and not yet finalized.

Tuesday's announcement came just weeks after Obama's nominee to head the Environmental Protection Agency, Gina McCarthy, assured senators during her confirmation process that the EPA was "not currently" developing any regulations on existing sources of greenhouse gases. McCarthy said if EPA were to look at such regulations, it would allow states, the public and others to "offer meaningful input on potential approaches."

Even before Obama spoke, reaction from Republicans was swift and dismissive, reflecting the opposition to climate legislation on Capitol Hill that prompted a frustrated Obama to sidestep lawmakers and take action himself.

"It's tantamount to kicking the ladder out from beneath the feet of many Americans struggling in today's economy," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said on the floor of the Senate.

Environmental groups offered a mix of praise and wariness that Obama would follow through on the ambitious goals he laid out. Bill Snape of the Center for Biological Diversity described it as too little, too late.

"What he's proposing isn't big enough, doesn't move fast enough, to match the terrifying magnitude of the climate crisis," Snape said.

Others hailed the plan, galvanized by the fact that Obama was taking action on his own after the reluctance in Congress to tackle the issue using legislation.

"The president nailed it: this can't wait," said Frances Beinecke, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council. "We will cut this carbon pollution today so our children don't inherit climate chaos tomorrow."

Haas began a muggy final round in a four-way tie atop the leaderboard with fellow Americans Roberto Castro and James Driscoll and Andres Romero of Argentina.

He pulled away with three straight birdies from the eighth and two more at the 14th and 16th for a five-under 66.

"I just kept the ball in front of me," said Haas, who had missed the cut in three of his four previous PGA Tour events. "Nothing too crazy."

Castro opened his round with a bogey at the first but was error free the rest of the day, returning a two-under 69 to finish three back of Haas, who collected his fifth career PGA Tour title with a four-day total of 12-under 272.

When Haas calmly rolled in a three-foot par putt at the 18th he joined Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson and Justin Rose as the only players to record at least one PGA Tour win in each of the last four seasons.

The 31-year-old was handed the trophy from tournament host Tiger Woods, who was unable to take part in the event because of an elbow injury that will keep the world number one out of action until the British Open.

"He played beautifully today," said Woods on the PGA Tour website. "He handled his business through the tougher stretch of holes and pulled away."

Long-hitting American Jason Kokrak (69) and South Korean Dong-Hwan Lee, with the round of the day at seven-under 64, finished in a tie for third one shot further adrift on eight-under.

Lee, chasing his first PGA Tour win, made a terrific charge with birdies on six of his opening eight holes, including five straight from the fourth.

Back-to-back bogeys at 10 and 11 took the steam out of Lee's challenge but still finished strong with three more birdies to return the best round of the week at the Congressional.

LONDON (Reuters) - Doctors could save three million more lives worldwide by 2025 if they offer AIDS drugs to people with HIV much sooner after they test positive for the virus, the World Health Organization said on Sunday.

While better access to cheap generic AIDS drugs means many more people are now getting treatment, health workers, particularly in poor countries with limited health budgets, currently tend to wait until the infection has progressed.

But in new guidelines aimed at controlling and eventually reducing the global AIDS epidemic, the U.N. health agency said some 26 million HIV-positive people - or around 80 percent of all those with the virus - should be getting drug treatment.

The guidelines, which set a global standard for when people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) should start antiretroviral treatment, were drawn up after numerous studies found that treating HIV patients earlier can keep them healthy for many years and also lowers the amount of virus in the blood, significantly cutting their risk of infecting someone else.

"We are raising the bar to 26 million people," said Gottfried Hirnschall, the WHO's HIV/AIDS department director.

"And this is not only about keeping people healthy and alive but also about blocking further transmission of HIV."

Some 34 million people worldwide have the HIV virus that causes AIDS and the vast majority of them live in poor and developing countries. Sub-Saharan Africa is by far the worst affected region.

But the epidemic - which has killed 25 million people in the 30 years since HIV was first discovered - is showing some signs of being turned around. The United Nations AIDS program UNAIDS says deaths from the disease fell to 1.7 million in 2011, down from a peak of 2.3 million in 2005 and from 1.8 million in 2010.

Swift progress has also been made in getting more HIV patients into treatment, with 9.7 million people getting life-saving AIDS drugs in 2012, up from just 300,000 people a decade earlier, according to latest WHO data also published on Sunday.

Indian generics companies are leading suppliers of HIV drugs to Africa and to many other poor countries. Major Western HIV drugmakers include Gilead Sciences, Johnson & Johnson and ViiV Healthcare, which is majority-owned by GlaxoSmithKline.

"IRREVERSIBLE DECLINE"?

Margaret Chan, the WHO's director general, said the dramatic improvement in access to HIV treatment raised the prospect of the world one day being able to beat the disease.

"With nearly 10 million people now on antiretroviral therapy, we see that such prospects - unthinkable just a few years ago - can now fuel the momentum needed to push the HIV epidemic into irreversible decline," she said in a statement.

The WHO's guidelines encourage health authorities worldwide to start treatment in adults with HIV as soon as a key test known as a CD4 cell count falls to a measure of 500 cells per cubic millimeter or less.

The previous WHO standard was to offer treatment at a CD4 count of 350 or less, in other words when the virus has already started to damage the patient's immune system.

The guidelines also say all pregnant or breastfeeding women and all children under five with HIV should start treatment immediately, whatever their CD4 count, and that all HIV patients should be regularly monitored to assess their "viral load".

This allows health workers to check whether the medicines are reducing the amount of virus in the blood. It also encourages patients to keep taking their medicine because they can see it having positive results.

"There's no greater motivating factor for people to stick to their HIV treatment than knowing the virus is undetectable' in their blood," said Gilles van Cutsem, the medical coordinator in South Africa for the international medical humanitarian organisation Mdecins Sans Frontires (MSF).

MSF welcomed the new guidelines but cautioned that the money and the political will to implement them was also needed.

"Now is not the time to be daunted but to push forward," MSF president Unni Karunakara said in a statement. "So it's critical to mobilize international support... including funding for HIV treatment programs from donor governments."

The WHO's Hirnschall said getting AIDS drugs to the extra patients brought in by the new guidelines would require another 10 percent on top of the $22-$24 billion a year currently needed to fund the global fight against HIV and AIDS.

Jagr might have to wait a while, and the league's active scoring leader might not be the only free agent without a new job this weekend.

"He definitely still wants to play and there is some interest in him," Jagr's agent, Petr Svoboda, told The Associated Press on Saturday afternoon. "I think it's going to take some time, but you never know for sure because there are three teams that are very interested."

Svoboda declined to say which teams wanted to sign Jagr.

J.P. Barry, who represents two of the top free agents available, Daniel Cleary and Mason Raymond, also expected a relatively slower pace of moves around the league.

"We've touched based with several teams and many of them are being patient at this point," Barry said Saturday. "We've got options for (Cleary and Raymond), but we're in a holding pattern with each of them because I think everyone is taking a breath this weekend.

"I've been through about 15 of these, and there is always a frenzy of moves then a pause to reassess and then a second wave. It's tough to predict when that second wave will happen, so we're always on call when teams are ready."

Day 1 of the free agency flurry included dozens of deals, including Jarome Iginla signing a one-year deal worth as much as $6 million with Boston, which almost acquired the six-time All-Star last season when Pittsburgh did from Calgary. Nathan Horton cashed in on his second strong postseason performance for the Bruins with a $37.1 million, seven-year contract in Columbus.

Daniel Alfredsson made perhaps the most surprising move. The 40-year-old forward is taking what might be his last shot at winning a Stanley Cup with the Detroit Red Wings, jilting the Ottawa Senators after being the face of the franchise.

The Senators tried to bounce back by making a bold trade for Anaheim forward Bobby Ryan in exchange for a pair of promising players and a first-round draft pick.

On Saturday, the second day NHL teams could sign free agents, the pickings were slim after top-tier players were taken off the market by teams that agreed to and signed deals following two days of talks.

Among the relatively notable names available Saturday afternoon: Jagr, Cleary, Mason, Mikhail Grabovski, Ilya Bryzgalov, Tim Thomas, Damien Brunner, Mason Raymond, Toni Lydman, Derek Roy, Brad Boyes and Brenden Morrow.

Technically, Teemu Selanne is an unrestricted free agent, too.

No one, though, expects the 43-year-old Finnish Flash to leave the Anaheim Ducks if he chooses to keep playing in North America. Ducks general manager Bob Murray plans to contact Selanne next week to find out if he is close to making a decision on returning or retiring.

Senators general manager Bryan Murray, though, was among the many shocked when Alfredsson said he was ready to leave the only franchise he has played for in his 17-season NHL career.

"He indicated winning a Stanley Cup was an opportunity he couldn't pass up," Murray recalled. "He told me the two teams he was talking to. He told me he thought they were in a position ahead of us to make that happen."

While Alfredsson could've stayed in Ottawa to make more than the $5.5 million he'll be paid next season by the Red Wings to chase a Cup, Horton is leaving a championship-contending team to be well-compensated by a franchise in Columbus without a postseason win in its 12 seasons of existence.

"This is a team on the rise with great players and I'm looking forward to being a part of it," Horton said.

Jagr, a five-time scoring champion and former NHL MVP, was able to continue his career in the league during the shortened season when the Dallas Stars gave him a $4.55 million, one-year contract last summer.

After Jagr had 14 goals and 26 points in 34 games for the Stars, showing he could still produce in his 40s, Dallas dealt him to the Bruins. He had nine points in 11 regular season games in Boston and 10 assists in 22 postseason games in which he didn't score, but made key plays that didn't show up on the scoresheet. Jagr teamed with Mario Lemieux to help lead the Penguins win a pair of Stanley Cup championships as a teenager in his first two NHL seasons in 1991 and 1992, and was the league's MVP in 1999.
