People sell goods and food on the streets of many American cities. 

多くの米国の都市の路上で、人々は品物や食べ物を販売している。

Many of these sellers are immigrants, and some are in the United States without government permission.

Street vending is illegal in Los Angeles, California. People who do it anyway can be fined up to $1,000 and face six months in jail.

A new school in Uruguay is teaching about environmental sustainability and practicing what it teaches.

Many expressions used in politics are borrowed from sports competitions. We often call political elections "races". In fact, sometimes we just cut to the chase and call the presidential election, a "horse race".

政治に関して用いられる多くの表現は、スポーツ競技から借用されたものだ。 我々はよく、政治に関係する選挙のことを「戦い」と言う。 実際、私たちはときどき要点をついて、大統領選挙のことを「競馬」と呼ぶ。

If the race is close, we can say the candidates are "neck-and-neck". This horse racing term means the two candidates are nearly tied in the polls and a winner is difficult to predict.

Uber Asks NASA Engineer to Develop Flying Cars

The rideshare service Uber has asked an expert from NASA, the American space agency, to help the company develop cars that can fly.

配車サービスのウーバーは航空宇宙局NASAの専門家に、飛行可能な自動車を同社が開発する支援を依頼した。

NASA engineer Mark Moore will work on the project, Bloomberg Technology reported.

ブルームバーグ・テクノロジーは、NASAの技術者マーク・ムーアがプロジェクトに取り組む予定だと伝えた。

The Bloomberg show said the project aims to support other businesses that are developing flying vehicles as well.

These Paper Drones Can Make Deliveries, then Disappear

An American company has built a new drone that could improve the efficiency of deliveries.

ある米企業が配達の効率を向上できる、新型ドローンを製作した。

The drone is very different from other unmanned aircraft.

そのドローンは他の無人機とは大きく異なっている。

It is made almost completely out of cardboard and has no motor. The drones look like bigger versions of the paper airplanes we used to make as kids.

The drones are being developed by Otherlab – a technology research company in San Francisco, California. It calls the drone a “Sky Machine.”

Cherry Blossoms Will Come Out Early in Washington

One of the most popular events in Washington, D.C. each year is the National Cherry Blossom Festival. It takes place in early April.

毎年、首都ワシントンで行われるたいへん人気のイベント1つに、全米桜祭りがある。 それは4月上旬に開催される。

The city’s first cherry trees were a gift from Japan to the United States in 1912. About 100 of them are still alive.

The cherry trees are a short walk from a number of major monuments, like the Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial and Washington Monument.

Disney Magic: Room Powered by Wireless Electricity

The Walt Disney Company has built a room that it says can wirelessly power and charge any devices inside it.

Alanson Sample is the lead researcher at Disney Research.

Sample said the idea of wireless power goes way back to the 1900s.

しかしウィメンズマーチとは異なり、水曜日の抗議は女性の不在を中心としたものだった。

Organizers were calling for women to take the day off work and asking them not to spend money. Organizers were also asking supporters to wear the color red to show love and sacrifice.

主催者は女性たちにその日仕事を休むよう呼びかけ、お金を使わないよう求めた。 また主催者は、愛と犠牲を表すものとして、赤を身に着けるよう支援者らに求めた。

But some people on social media were critical of the protest. They said that, because many women could not afford to take a day off work, the protest only included those at a higher economic level.

The organizers, however, said that women who were able to protest would strike for those who could not.

Women in more than 50 countries around the world also protested on March 8. The movement was part of the International Women’s Strike. They were protesting violence against women and demanding equal rights.
