The man, who is in a critical condition, was shot three times in an attack in north Belfast that police are treating as attempted murder.

He was sitting in a car with two friends in Brookfield Place in the republican Ardoyne area around 9.30pm on Friday night when three or four masked men appeared.

One opened fire through the driver's window, hitting the man in the abdomen and both legs.

Detectives said they have not yet established a motive for the attack.

The victim underwent emergency surgery overnight.

One of the other men in the car sustained a graze wound to his leg while the other was uninjured.

Sinn Fein junior minister at Stormont and north Belfast MLA Gerry Kelly said the attackers had set out to kill.

"I want to condemn this incident outright, those responsible for this attack are not representative of this community in any way, they have no support and they offer our people nothing but further distress in the time ahead," he said.

"This young man has been left critically injured and it is clear that this was an attempt to take this young person's life.

"The people of Ardoyne and wider north Belfast have suffered enough, particularly our young people." People in Northern Ireland continue to be subject to paramilitary-style 'punishment' attacks despite the end of the Troubles.

However, SDLP north Belfast MLA Alban Maginness questioned whether this was such an incident as the victim's wounds were not confined to the arms and legs.

"The people of Ardoyne were at the sharp end of the Troubles for decades and they suffered greatly.

"We have many difficult problems to deal with in the area, but the one thing we can be absolutely sure of is that those who carry out these shootings have no solutions to offer.

"They don't want solutions, they want to keep communities in turmoil Epi leather so they can exercise control.

"They can only harm the community and they must be isolated in the community."

HAROLD Tillman, the fashion entrepreneur behind the revived Jaeger fashion chain, is considering a flotation of his restaurant business after a series of acquisitions more than doubled the size of the enterprise.

Tillman, in partnership with his son Mitchell and nightclub operator Carlo Spetale, snapped up three London restaurants last week - The Ebury, The Waterway and Running Horse - for a sum thought to be several million pounds.

The trio already owns the Harry Morgan chain of delicatessens - which is soon to open a concession in Harrods - the super-fashionable Notting Hill Brasserie, frequented by Jude Law and Mick Jagger, and the Park Lane Asian restaurant Taman Gang, a haunt of supermodels Heidi Klum and Naomi Campbell.

Tillman said the enlarged restaurant group would make operating profits of about [pounds sterling]3 million and could be worth up to [pounds sterling]30 million.

'I will probably float this one because I want to keep on expanding,' said Tillman, who has kept his other investments, including Jaeger and the Allders store in Croydon, south London, as private businesses.

Maybe you can't tell from his songs about people so afflicted with heartbreak and sorrow they could earn a sympathetic look from Job, but singer/songwriter Sam Quinn has a well-developed funny bone.

That may surprise some of Quinn's fans because, when he's not cracking jokes about his "very strong beard muscle," the former co-lead singer of the now-defunct Johnson City, Tenn.-based folk/rock band the everybodyfields is notorious for his ability to depress the pants off his listeners.

That lyrical trend continues on his upcoming solo debut, "The Fake That Sunk a Thousand Ships" (out Tuesday), but the now-beardless Quinn insists the weepy lyrics are actually all in good fun and necessary to his well-being.

"It all has to bubble out. Not that these are bold exorcisms of my problems in my life or anything, but it's what's going on (in my life)."

Quinn and his band, The Japan 10, will be driving down from Gucci Ring Knoxville on Saturday to take the stage at Barking Legs Theater as the start of a promotional tour for "The Fake."

The album was recorded last summer and marks the first material Quinn has released since the dissolution of the everybodyfields, which happened around the same time.

Although he's proud of his time with that band, Quinn said the 10 songs on "The Fake" -- which he called "a good, depressing little nugget" -- should help him firmly establish himself as a separate identity.

"I think I will have after this record push," he said. "I won't have to put 'of the everybodyfields' on there anymore to make an extra $15.

"I do look forward to not having that Michael Jackson, of the Jackson Five, thing going on."
