Burkart launched "100 Perfect Jumps for Parkinson's" in 2008 after his father was diagnosed with Parkinson's, a progressive neurological condition that leads to shaking (tremors) and difficulty with walking, movement and coordination. He raised $48,000 by completing 100 skydives in one day. The following year, Burkart's "200 Perfect Jumps for Parkinson's" was hampered by the weather. He was still able to complete 150 jumps on behalf of the foundation. Unfortunately, the "300 Perfect Jumps for Parkinson's" event scheduled for 2012 had to be postponed due to injuries that changed Burkart's life.

On March 10, 2012, Burkart was seriously injured in a head-on snowmobile accident on the Canadian border in northern Minnesota. He broke numerous bones including four vertebrae and suffered serious nerve damage in his left arm. The injuries proved to be debilitating and have left the skydiver, scuba instructor, water skier and all-around competitive athlete without the use of his left arm.

After surgery and with rigorous physical therapy, Burkart might regain limited elbow flexion and some mild finger usage in two to three years. The damage to his nerves do not allow Burkart to use a prosthetic arm. Despite the loss, he is determined to press on.

With some changes to his gear, Burkart is able to jump with just one arm. Due to this less-than-perfect arrangement, the 300 Perfect Jumps has been rebranded as

Burkart has decided not to attach a specific number of jumps to the event. For safety purposes, he wants the flexibility of completing however many jumps his one good arm can handle. In addition to skydiving, other family-friendly activities will take place throughout the day.

The Harvard University researchers stressed it was too early to say the men have been cured, but said it was an encouraging sign that the virus hasn't rebounded in their blood months after drug treatment ended.

The first person reported to be cured of HIV, American Timothy Ray Brown, underwent a stem cell transplant in 2007 to treat his leukemia. He was reported by his German doctors to have been cured of HIV two years later.

Brown's doctors used a donor who had a rare genetic mutation that provides resistance against HIV. So far, no one has observed similar results using ordinary donor cells such as those given to the two patients by the Harvard University researchers.

The researchers, Timothy Henrich and Daniel Kuritzkes of the Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, announced last year that blood samples taken from the men who both had blood cancers showed no traces of the HIV virus eight months after they received bone marrow transplants to replace cancerous blood cells with healthy donor cells. The men were still on anti-HIV drugs at the time.

The men have both since stopped anti-retroviral therapy one 15 weeks ago and the other seven weeks ago and show no signs of the virus, Henrich told an international AIDS conference in Malaysia on Wednesday.

"They are doing very well," Henrich said. "While these results are exciting, they do not yet indicate that the men have been cured. Only time will tell."

The HIV virus may be hiding in other organs such as the liver, spleen or brain and could return months later, he warned.

Further testing of the men's cells, plasma and tissue for at least a year will help give a clearer picture on the full impact of the transplant on HIV persistence, he said.

Kuritzkes said the patients will be put back on the drugs if there is a viral rebound.

A rebound will show that other sites are important reservoirs of infectious virus and new approaches to measuring these reservoirs will be needed in developing a cure, Henrich said.

"These findings clearly provide important new information that might well alter the current thinking about HIV and gene therapy," Kevin Robert Frost, chief executive of The Foundation of AIDS Research, said in a statement. "While stem cell transplantation is not a viable option for people with HIV on a broad scale because of its costs and complexity, these new cases could lead us to new approaches to treating, and ultimately even eradicating, HIV."

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A civil liberties group is taking the unusual step of asking the Supreme Court to review a ruling by a secretive intelligence court that authorized government access to millions of Verizon Communications Incphone call records

The Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) said it would file an emergency application at the high court on Monday. The court rarely grants such requests.

The intelligence court's activities received widespread public attention in June when the British-based Guardian newspaper published the order that gave permission for the U.S. government to access data of telecoms giant Verizon.

Edward Snowden, a former U.S. National Security Agency contractor, later identified himself as the leaker and is currently on the run from the U.S. government. He faces a series of criminal charges for disclosing the full scope of U.S. domestic data-gathering activities.

EPIC is challenging the intelligence court's authority to authorize such a wide-ranging data-gathering operation. The government sought the records under Section 215 of the 2001 USA Patriot Act, which allows for access to "any tangible things" as part of any authorized investigation related to terrorism or intelligence activities.

The EPIC court filing is a long shot as the group is not following the traditional route for appealing a lower court decision. The group said in a statement it does not have that option as there is no other way for it to challenge the intelligence court's decision.

In the court filing, EPIC's lawyers say emergency review is warranted because the intelligence court "exceeded its statutory jurisdiction when it ordered production of millions of domestic telephone records that cannot plausibly be relevant to an authorized investigation."

The intelligence court, set up by Congress in 1978 to help try to curb abuses in the intelligence community, operates in secret. Its 11 judges, appointed by Chief Justice John Roberts, are full-time federal district court judges who take on the task as an additional responsibility.

There is no adversarial system. The government is the only party.

Addressing whether EPIC had legal standing to intervene, its lawyers noted the court decision "implicates the privacy interests of all Verizon customers," of which the group is one.

EPIC is just one of several civil liberties groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union, that are taking legal action in response to the leaks by Snowden, who is believed to be holed up in the transit area of Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport, where he landed on June 23 from Hong Kong.

The United States has revoked Snowden's passport and wants him arrested on espionage charges.

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Ewen McKenzie was named as new coach of the Wallabies on Tuesday after the Australian Rugby Union decided to part ways with New Zealander Robbie Deans.

The 53-year-old Deans, who had been Australia's first foreign coach, led the team for 74 tests in his five-and-a-half years in charge, a record for a Wallabies coach.

McKenzie, a popular local choice who guided the Queensland Reds to a maiden Super Rugby title in 2011, will take the reins six weeks before they play the opening match of the Rugby Championship against bitter rivals New Zealand.

The former Wallabies prop had put his hand up for the role earlier in the year and had beaten out a strong candidate in World Cup-winning coach Jake White, now at the ACT Brumbies.

"I'm looking forward to saddling up with the Wallabies," McKenzie told reporters at a media conference in Sydney on Tuesday. "There's a thousand things I need to work on.

"I'll be picking a team that I think can beat the All Blacks and I'm really looking forward to that task.

"It's a matter of getting the headspace right and getting the tactics right and having a crack."

The news conference came hours after the ARU issued a news release saying Deans had stepped down.

While the release cast the move as voluntary, ARU boss Bill Pulver confirmed the governing body had been conducting a coaching review for months.

McKenzie would have replaced Deans even if the Wallabies had beaten the British and Irish Lions in their three-test series, Pulver confirmed.

In the event, the 2-1 series loss, capped by a thumping 41-16 defeat in the Sydney decider on Saturday, offered the perfect excuse for the ARU to strike.

"I wish to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in Australian rugby for their support through the duration of my tenure," Deans, who was contracted to the end of the year, said in the news release.

"It has been a rewarding five years and I am proud of all that we have achieved.

"Most especially I would like to thank the players for their efforts and wish them all the best going forward."

Softly-spoken and unfailingly cagey, Deans never endeared himself to a sceptical Australian public weary of New Zealand's dominance over the Wallabies throughout the past decade.

Although handed a contract extension prior to the 2011 World Cup, Deans faced almost immediate calls for his head when Australia exited in the semi-finals, a performance many Down Under regarded as an under achievement.

After a shock loss to Scotland on home soil last year, Deans held on to his job by guiding the Wallabies to a 3-0 whitewash of Wales.

Injuries put paid to the team's hopes of winning the inaugural four-nation Rugby Championship, but Australia finished the season with a successful tour of Europe, marred only by a heavy loss to France.

Deans's tenure was marred by disciplinary problems and a number of off-field distractions during the Lions series would have steeled the ARU's resolve to act.

Young playmakers James O'Connor and Kurtley Beale, forgiven for a host of transgressions under Deans's watch, embarrassed the team by being photographed at a fast food outlet at 4am days before the second test in Melbourne.

The pair escaped punishment at the selection table, leaving Deans appearing soft on discipline and all-too-willing to coddle favourites.

Local media also reported later that the pair had missed a team bus to training before the third and final test and were seen partying in a Sydney nightclub after the loss.

Deans's failure to pull the talented but brash playmaking duo in line has fuelled local media reports of a rift between the senior players and the coach.

McKenzie said he would not be allowing his players to rest on reputation alone.

"I am an ex-Wallaby so I have a very strong opinion," he said. "I understand the sacrifices it takes to be successful at that level.

"For me that's a week-to-week contract ... I don't want it to be an opportunity that players get easily."

The first two years of my college experience was spent at a community college. My tuition was covered, but I took out a loan for $20,000 to cover living expenses. Upon transferring to a costly four-year university I received a hefty scholarship, which covered most of my expenses. Still, my loans were at $11,500 per year. The day of my graduation, I received the coveted diploma and a not-so-coveted array of bills for my student loans.

However, the difference between other students and myself was the large sum of money lingering my savings account that I started four years prior. Let me explain how I managed to pay off my bills on the same day that I graduated from college:

Federal Loans Only

The first goal during my college career was to stay away from private student loans because they are nightmares. Trust me, I know. I took out a $5,000 private student loan in my first year of college and watched it as it was passed around from lender to lender and the interest rate jumped around, ranging from 8% to 20%. Not to mention the compounding of interest that increased the loan nearly $1,500 in eight months. Needless to say, I paid that off with every dime that I had to give to it by taking on a job. Please, if you can avoid them, do not take out alternative loans.

The government offers student loans at wonderful interest rates and the government will pay the interest of the loan while you are pursuing your education.

Monthly Payments While in School

Let's evaluate my loans. During years one and two, I took out $7,500 for each year. My plan was to get a job that I could take the money that I would need to pay off the loan in one year and pay it into a high-interest savings account. That meant that for years one and two, I paid $625 into my savings account each month. During years three and four, I took out $11,500 per year, which meant that I had to contribute $960 each month to the savings account. This may seem like a lot of money, but at the time I was single and still didn't have my daughter (until the fourth year), so it was easy to have all of my expenses paid, get a job on the side and contribute all of that money into a savings account.

At the end of the four years, I had contributed $43,000 to my savings account and earned about $1,000 in interest on the money.

On the day of my graduation I was able to pay off my student loans and never had to pay a cent of interest. If you are financially capable to do this, then I suggest that you do it. All it takes is finding extra income through a part time job or funding. You will save thousands of dollars in interest if you can manage this. If you cannot afford to pay the monthly payment, then pay half of it or pay what the interest would be on the loan. That way you can make a lump sum payment at the end of your college education.

But one thing I did not have to pretend: For the first time since I began wielding a tennis racquet as an eager boy 50 years ago, a British player won the mens title at .

s victory, ending a 77-year drought for British mens tennis at the sports historic home, was one I would have loved to have savored in England, where the entire nation was egging him on. But even sitting alone in a darkened room on the other side of the globe, the hairs stood up on the back of my neck as Novak Djokovic struck his last losing shot into the net.

The life of a British tennis fan has not been a happy one for the past 80 years or so. I can just remember Angela Mortimer, an Englishwoman, winning the Wimbledon ladies championship in 1961, and I was jumping up and down with excitement when Virginia Wade won the centenary Wimbledon in 1977.

But when it came to the men, all we have had is also-rans. There's Tim Henman, for example, who was a British hero around the turn of the century despite the fact that he never made it as far as the finals of any Grand Slam tournament.

And when I was a teenager, we all worshipped . But not for his triumphs, unfortunately he never got beyond the semi-finals at Wimbledon. Instead we admired him for his very British sportsmanship: In 1973, I recall, after being declared the winner of a quarter-final againstwith a serve that Mr. Borg disputed, Mr. Taylor offered to play the point again. He won that match eventually, but later lost his semi-final.

Today, at last, British tennis has someone other than gallant losers to celebrate.

And yet, and yet...

Andy Murray is doubtless a great guy and an honorable man. But if an umpire called his match point serve "in," you can bet he would take his victory whatever his opponents doubts.

And who could blame him, especially now that Hawkeye can resolve such doubts in the blink of a computers eye?

I should stop worrying. And perhaps, just for the day, we can be let off Rudyard Kiplings admonition in his poem If, inscribed above the entrance to Centre Court:

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

And treat those two impostors just the same

Gallant losers are all very well, but after 77 years, your very own Wimbledon champion is worth celebrating.

DENVER (Reuters) - The Colorado judge presiding over the murder case of accused theater gunman James Holmes said on Monday he will hold a pretrial hearing to decide which graphic images of the shooting rampage can be shown to jurors.

Attorneys for the one-time University of Colorado neuroscience graduate student, who has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, filed a motion seeking to limit pictures displayed at trial, saying they could prejudice the jury.

Arapahoe County District Judge Carlos Samour Jr. said in a written order that it "makes sense" to litigate the issues ahead of the trial, which is scheduled to start in February 2014.

"Otherwise, such litigation may cause delays during the trial and/or frequent recesses for the jury," Samour wrote.

Holmes, 25, is charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder and attempted murder for the July 2012 rampage at an Aurora, Colorado cinema during a screening of the Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises."

Twelve moviegoers were shot to death in the spree and 58 others were wounded, while another dozen people were injured fleeing the theater. Prosecutors have said they will seek the death penalty against Holmes, a California native, if he is convicted.

The judge ordered prosecutors to provide the defense with copies of all photographs, videos or other images they intend to use three days before the pretrial hearing, which has yet to be scheduled.

Separately, the judge granted a request by Holmes exempting his parents from an order that precludes witnesses from listening to trial testimony.

Prosecutors did not object to that motion but said in their response that it was "ironic" that public defenders sought the exemption while pushing for other witnesses to be barred from the courtroom.
