NEW YORK (Reuters) - Canadian Anthony Bennett, a power forward who played one year at University of Nevada, Las Vegas, leaped over a pair of touted centers to emerge as number one pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers at Thursday's NBA Draft.

While many draft analysts predicted Nerlens Noel of Kentucky or Ukrainian Alex Len of Maryland would go No. 1, the versatile, 6-foot-8 Bennett was the surprise top choice of a Cavs team that finished last season with a 24-58 record.

"I'm just as surprised as everybody else," Bennett, who averaged 16.1 points and 8.1 rebounds as a freshman at Las Vegas last season, told reporters at Barclays Center, home of the Brooklyn Nets.

"I heard everything was up for grabs. But I'm just real happy, glad that I have this opportunity, and I just got to thank God for everything."

Injuries to Noel (knee) and Len (foot) may have cooled the Cavs to those young big men, but Toronto native Bennett himself required shoulder surgery at the end of his college season and that did not deter the Cavaliers.

"It's just crazy. Made history," said an excited Bennett. "It's just like a long-time dream that I had since I first started playing basketball.

"It's just crazy."

Bennett may be a touch smaller than classic the NBA power forward size, but he is strong, has a wide wingspan and good finishing moves around the rim, along with an accurate jumper that allows him to work from the outside as well.

"I can contribute at the four, at the three," said the 20-year-old. "There's things I still need to work on, but I feel like I'm a great team mate, unselfish. I think I can fit in right away."

Bennett said he had no clue he was going number one overall.

"When they said my name, that's when I knew," he said. "I had no idea before."

Bennett will be joining compatriot Tristan Thompson on the Cavs, who took the Canadian forward with the fourth overall pick in the 2011 draft. Thompson averaged 11.7 points and 9.4 rebounds a game last season for Cleveland.

"He's just a great guy,' said Bennett. "He seems real cool. Both from the same area. I'm going to be seeing him a lot."

Bennett was the first UNLV player to be voted Mountain West Freshman of the Year in 13 seasons and earned first-team All-Mountain West honors after leading the Rebels in scoring, rebounding and three-point percentage.

The Canadian scored in double figures in his first 17 games as a collegian, racking up 12 double-doubles, and scored 20 or more points 13 times.

Bennett's coach, Dave Rice, gave a sterling recommendation of his young forward before the draft.

"There's not much that he can't do on a court," said Rice.

"He can score from the perimeter. He can score in the post. He's a fabulous rebounder. The only thing that he lacked coming in was just experience."

Bennett predicted Canadians could go back-to-back atop the NBA Draft with Andrew Wiggins looming as a dominant player at Kansas.

"Next year with Wiggins, hopefully he does well at Kansas," said Bennett. "I'm rooting for him. I'm pretty sure he'll get that No. 1 spot."

Nunez knocked in two runs and had two hits, including a run-scoring single up the middle in the sixth inning that snapped a 4-4 tie in New York's 5-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.

The win was the sixth in a row for the Yankees (48-39), who jumped over the Orioles (48-40) into second place in the American League East, 5.5 games behind the Boston Red Sox.

"I was excited, very excited," the Dominican said about his return to the Yankee Stadium diamond after being out two months with a strained rib cage muscle. "Everything's fine and I'm happy to be back."

Nunez had started the season as the regular shortstop in place of Derek Jeter, who is still out due to a fractured ankle, and then joined the Yankees captain on the sidelines when he was injured.

Jeter, meanwhile, will begin his rehab games, the last stage before returning to the team, on Saturday night with the Yankees' Triple A affiliate in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Slugging third baseman Alex Rodriguez is in the midst of his rehab assignment in Tampa, Florida. Outfielder Curtis Granderson is expected to follow them soon onto the field as well after breaking his hand when he was hit by a pitch.

Nunez provided a positive jolt right away, driving in a run in the second inning with a sacrifice fly to left.

He followed that with a single to right in his next at-bat and then drove in the go-ahead run to help make a winner out of Andy Pettitte (6-6) with evergreen closer Mariano Rivera notching his 29th save.

"I did not try to do too much, just do my job," said the 26-year-old Nunez, who thought the team and its recently acquired fill-in players had a good attitude.

"Right now there is a lot of confidence. They are happy, they are confident and now everybody is coming back."

Manager Joe Girardi said the team decided it was worth the gamble in bringing Nunez up after just 16 at-bats during his rehab assignment.

"Younger players are always a little bit different," explained Girardi. "The fact that he went through a full spring training and played the first month, we figured he wouldn't be too rusty.

"And Noony is kind of a free spirit. I don't think Noony probably thought much about not having a lot of at-bats," the manager said with a laugh. "He has the ability to really contribute offensively, to play good defense, steal a lot of bases and do a lot of different things. He has a lot of tools."

SALERNO, Italy (Reuters) - Even though he was known to like to live well, police said they were startled when they entered Monsignor Nunzio Scarano's apartment after he called them one night in January to report a burglary.

The apartment, in one of Salerno's most up-market neighborhoods in the city center, was huge, with art lining the walls and hallways divided by Roman-style columns.

Scarano, a Vatican official with close ties to the Vatican bank and who is now in Rome's Queen of Heaven jail, had called police to report that thieves had stolen part of his art collection.

Interviews with two key chief investigators in different judicial and police departments in Salerno, in southern Italy, and police pictures of the apartment viewed by Reuters give the most detailed picture to date of Scarano's wealth.

The investigators disclosed that the trove of stolen goods estimated to be worth up to 6 million euro ($7.82 million) included six works by Giorgio de Chirico, one by Renato Guttuso, one attributed to Marc Chagall and pieces of religious art.

"We asked ourselves how did this monsignor come to own this place and possess these expensive works of art," said a senior investigator in the southern Italian city who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity.

"He said they were all donations. It is a luxury apartment and we asked ourselves how he could have bought it and where the money came from," he said. Magistrates suspect at least some of it may have come from illegal activity in the Salerno area.

Through his lawyer, Silverio Sica, Scarano said that the art work, the apartment and money in his bank accounts, including two at the Vatican bank, all came from donations and that he had done nothing wrong.

There was no sign of breaking and entering apart from a broken window which police believed irrelevant and the thieves were thought to have entered with a key.

The investigators asked tax police to dig into what Italian investigators call someone's "financial patrimony" - bank accounts, real estate, and stocks. The trail led to the Vatican bank.

The 700 square-meter (7,500 square feet) luxury apartment on Via Romualdo Guarna was not the only piece of property that Scarano owned, either alone or jointly. Investigators discovered that he was part owner of three Salerno real estate companies.

But, most significantly, the investigators discovered that Scarano had withdrawn 560,000 euros in cash last year in one transaction from the Vatican bank, officially known as the Institute for Works of Religion (IOR).

"DON 500 EUROS"

Scarano, well-connected in local high society circles, then divided the cash, most of it in 500 euro notes, among nearly 56 friends. The Italian media has dubbed Scarano "Don 500 euros" because it was apparently his preferred denomination.

Each friend gave him a cashier's check drawn on Italian banks. He then took all the checks to a bank in Salerno and paid off a mortgage on his apartment, which investigators said he had purchased for about 1.7 million euros.

Scarano told investigators that he took the money out of his Vatican bank account because he wanted to pay off his mortgage in order to sell his apartment at a profit and use the proceeds to build a home for the terminally ill. Lawyer Sica also said this was his client's intention.

Investigators said they were now looking into a home for the elderly that Scarano did help build in Salerno. They said they want to determine how the home was built, where the money came from and how it was financed.

An investigator in a police department in Salerno said each of the checks were justified as "a donation" in local bank records.

"But that was a very silly trick. We saw through that so fast. They were false donations," he said. Scarano's lawyer says all donations were genuine.

Referring to Scarano's luxury apartment, which the prelate told investigators was furnished through donations, an investigator said:

"If they were donations, you don't furnish a house like that if you are a priest who has taken vows."

A KNACK FOR NUMBERS

By all accounts, Scarano was a man of the cloth with a knack for numbers.

He worked at banks in Salerno and nearby Battipaglia before he became a priest at the relatively late age of 35.

After serving in a parish in his native Salerno, he entered the Vatican bureaucracy and eventually wound up in its central financial administration office, the Administration of the Patrimony of the Holy See, or APSA.

Scarano was arrested in Rome on June 28 and formally accused of taking part in a plot to smuggle 20 million euros into Italy from Switzerland for his rich friends. [ID:nL5N0F70ZN]. Sica, his lawyer, said Scarano was "just trying to help friends" get their money back into Italy.

An Italian secret services agent and a financial broker were also arrested in the money smuggling case, which is being investigated by Rome magistrates and is separate from the Salerno case. Both investigations are continuing.

The Salerno investigators have formally asked the Vatican bank - via Italy's justice and foreign ministries - for information on a number of accounts there and more information about Scarano's financial activities. When Scarano was arrested, the Vatican said it would cooperate with investigators.

Salerno investigators said they had not yet received any information from the Vatican.

Since his election in March, Pope Francis has made it clear he wants to clean up the Vatican bank. On June 26, he set up a special commission of inquiry, in a bold move to come to grips with an institution that has embarrassed the Catholic Church for decades. ($1 = 0.7672 euros)

The company has appointed Don Mattrick, president of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business, to be its new chief executive officer, according to a Monday afternoon press release. Founder Mark Pincus, meanwhile, will step down from his position as CEO but will remain chairman of the company's board, as well as Chief Product Officer.

In a statement, Pincus cited Mattrick's long tenure in the gaming business and particularly his success in growing the user base of Microsoft's popular Xbox among Mattrick's qualifications. Mattrick is also a veteran of video game company Electronic Arts.

"Don is unique in the game business," said Pincus. "He's one of the top executives in the overall entertainment business and he's a great coach who has inspired people to do their best work and build strong, productive teams."

Zynga, which is behind social media games like Farmville and Words with Friends, has had a bumpy ride since its December 2011 IPO. After an IPO price of $10 per share, Zynga's stock rose to nearly $15 per share just a few months later, only to tumble through most of 2012 to nearly $2.

The company's latest earnings report in April showed earnings and revenue that beat Wall Street expectations, but it wasn't all good news. Figures also showed that monthly active users had fallen by 13 percent, to 253 million, down from the 331 million posted in the third quarter of 2012.

While it's uncertain whether new leadership may be able to breathe new life into the company, markets seemed cheered by the news: Zynga shares closed Monday at $3.07, up more than 10 percent.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama can expect mounting pressure to make new concessions on healthcare reform, especially the requirement that all Americans obtain insurance, after delaying penalties for businesses for the first year of his plan.

The U.S. Treasury said late on Tuesday it would grant businesses with 50 or more workers a one-year reprieve from having to provide health coverage to full-time staff.

The move appeared to ease the concerns of major companies about being ready to meet new reporting regulations in time for a January 1 deadline. But it raised new questions on whether Obama's signature domestic policy is unraveling or falling prey to fears about the Democratic Party's election prospects next year.

"It does represent the inability of the administration to implement the law as planned," said Robert Blendon of the Harvard School of Public Health. "The big question now is whether they're still going to require individuals to pay a penalty if they don't obtain coverage, if they're not going to require it of businesses."

Administration officials say the change affects less than 5 percent of businesses, as the overwhelming majority of employers already provide health coverage. But that could still involve as many as 10,000 businesses and hundreds of thousands of workers, according to reform advocates.

Leaders in the Republican Party and business community seized on the announcement as a sign that the entire Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was in jeopardy, particularly the individual mandate.

But administration officials and consumer advocates said Obama could not back down on the individual healthcare requirement, which is meant to ensure that enough Americans sign up so that the reform would be financially viable.

The individual mandate, which the U.S. Supreme Court upheld as constitutional a year ago after a lengthy legal battle, is the government's only lever to compel young healthy people to sign up for federally subsidized coverage in new online health insurance marketplaces that are slated to begin enrolling new beneficiaries on October 1. If too few younger adults enroll, insurance costs could soar and jeopardize the entire reform effort.

"It's going to be really hard to impose the individual mandate without an employer mandate. And if you cut that, you could see the whole thing start to unravel," said Katie Mahoney, executive director of the powerful U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Administration officials said a delay in the individual mandate was not under consideration, while former Obama advisers played down the significance of the employer mandate announcement on Tuesday.

"This decision isn't a big deal. It won't affect that many firms," said Nancy-Ann DeParle, a former senior White House aide who was deeply involved in developing the healthcare law.

"People will still have a responsibility to get covered and those who can't get affordable coverage through their employers will be able to come to the new marketplaces and get it."

STICK, OR CARROT?

The mandate for individuals takes effect next year and imposes a penalty, of either $95 or 1 percent of taxable household income, on Americans who have not obtained health insurance. It rises in phases to $695 per person, with a cap of 2.5 percent of household income, by 2016.

Administration officials insist that the bigger incentives for individuals to enroll are federal subsidies to buy insurance, and an expansion of the government's Medicaid program for the poor set to take place in just under half of the 50 U.S. states in 2014.

Ron Pollack, executive director of Families USA, a nonprofit group that has long pushed for affordable healthcare for consumers, said Obama's administration would not take steps to weaken a provision that "is essential for some of the key and very popular reforms in the law." These include prohibiting insurers from denying coverage for pre-existing conditions, and charging higher premiums based on health status.

Pollack and others believe that the insurance industry would also not accept a retreat from the individual mandate. Health insurance industry officials had no immediate comment on the move.

But some analysts said the White House ultimately may have little choice, as political rhetoric heats up ahead of the 2014 midterm elections, which will determine the makeup of Congress in the final years of Obama's presidency.

"Things are getting bad when you can't even successfully implement your own flawed ideas, and the question now is why should businesses and corporations get relief while individuals are forced to comply with the President's health care mandate?" Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, who chairs the Republican Governors Association, said in a statement.

Republican House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner also called on the Obama administration to provide a similar reprieve to individuals.

"The administration doesn't want to say the word, 'mandate'. They want to say that people are going to be able to get affordable coverage," said Joe Antos of the conservative American Enterprise Institute. He believes the administration will try to steer clear of the issue in the hopes that healthcare reform's other incentives will win over voters.

"If we get to the end of the enrollment period next March, and the general feeling is that it wasn't so bad and people didn't have to pay an arm and a leg, then politically they're O.K."

Rogers has gained a devoted following on the Internet for his work hand-feeding bears to gain their trust and live-streaming the birth of cubs. But DNR officials say he's made wild bears too comfortable around humans and question the scientific value of his work.

Donations to a legal fund started by his supporters had topped $9,000 as of Wednesday and around 5,000 people had signed a petition on Change.org asking the DNR to change its mind.

"What I'm looking for is just plain fairness," Rogers said in a telephone interview from the North American Bear Center, a tourist attraction he helped found in the northeastern Minnesota city of Ely, where the City Council on Tuesday voted to ask the DNR and Dayton to reinstate Rogers' permits.

Rogers said he spoke with Dayton staffers last week and was expecting a callback that hadn't materialized as of Wednesday afternoon. He said he tried calling a cellphone number he had for Dayton several times, but the call didn't go through.

Dayton spokesman Bob Hume said the governor had not received a formal request for a meeting from Rogers, but that Dayton would meet with him if he does. The governor has been working a limited schedule for the past week and a half while he recovers from a hip injury and has not held any public events.

DNR Commissioner Tom Landwehr told Rogers in a letter last week that his agency had repeatedly warned him about its public safety concerns and said they "greatly outweighed" any potential benefit from his research. The DNR ordered Rogers to remove the radio collars from his study bears by July 31. He's currently licensed for 12 collars.

Rogers, 74, said the decision against renewing his permits will spell the end of his 46-year career if it stands. He said he has not yet begun removing the collars in hopes that Dayton will hear him out and find a solution.

Rogers maintains that the DNR is wrong when it says he hasn't produced adequate peer-reviewed published research, and when it says the black bears he's collared near Ely have become too aggressive around people and too accustomed to seeking food from them. And he disputes whether the DNR really has received as many complaints from the public as agency officials say.

"The DNR for years has been trying to build a case against our research," Rogers said. "And if it was a legitimate case, that's one thing. But when they're falsifying bear complaints and making distorted comments to the public, that's not a case."

Casey, who has fought back from poor form and injury problems in recent times, started the final round at Carton House, County Kildare, four shots behind Dutch leader Joost Luiten.

The Englishman made his move on the eighth hole, hitting the first of five birdies in six holes in blustery and occasionally wet conditions, as Luiten, who won the Austrian Open earlier in the month, faltered with bogies on the fifth, 12th and 16th holes.

Casey, now with a world ranking of 169, began to struggle in the trying conditions, bogeying both the 15th and 16th holes to narrow his lead to just one shot, but an eagle on the par-five 18th after hitting the rough from the tee meant he could celebrate his first title since the Volvo Golf Champions in January 2011.

"It's incredibly sweet," Casey told the European Tour website (www.europeantour.com).

"It's been a while and when that putt went in half of it was relief and half of it was satisfaction.

"What a grandstand finish - winning an Irish open is an absolute dream.

"It was a shaky start, I didn't hit the ball particularly close going out but when the putts did start to go in I got on a bit of a roll."

Luiten's two-over round of 74 saw him finish on 11-under par, tied for second with England's Robert Rock who shot a final round 71 to take the runners-up spot for the second time.

Spain's two-time major winner Jose Maria Olazabal briefly held the lead during the final round but the 47-year-old, now ranked 425 and who captained the European Ryder Cup team to victory over the United States last year, faded to par 72 and a tie for fifth.
