Now that she has been relieved of the burden of being France's first lady, Carla Bruni is set to make a return to music and is planning a series of concerts and a new album to be released this autumn.

Although she has rarely been out of the spotlight in the last four years, the former supermodel put her pop career on hold after her whirlwind romance with Nicolas Sarkozy in 2008 and last year gave birth to a daughter Giulia, who is now seven months old.

Now, it seems, she is planning a comeback. "Carla did not put her career on hold during the five-year term of Nicolas Sarkozy. She continued to compose at her own pace," her spokesman Veronique Rampazzo has revealed. She told Le Parisien that while Bruni had not performed or recorded for "practical reasons" since 2008, she was now planning a series of shows and a new album.

Bruni will hope that her new record, which should be out in time for Christmas, recaptures the popularity of her debut, Quelqu'un m'a dit (Somebody Told Me), in 2004, which sold 2 million copies and won awards. Her subsequent efforts, 'No Promises' and 'Comme si de rien n'était' (As If Nothing Had Happened), were less well received.

She will also have to fight for attention with the new first lady, Valerie Trierweiler, who has vowed to carry on working as a journalist even though her "companion", Francois Hollande, has ousted Sarkozy. It will be interesting to see which of the two women exerts more of a fascination on the French public.

The decision to resume her musical career might have been prompted by other concerns, suggests The Daily Telegraph, such as the breadwinning powers of her husband. "Sarkozy is facing an uncertain future," says the paper. "His poor English means he is unlikely to be able to make money on the lucrative US lecture circuit, and he has ruled out any return to ball mill politics."

The Daily Mail hints that the former president may even decide to become a house husband. "Sarkozy is unlikely to return to his first career as a lawyer, either, but thanks to his Italian-born wife’s £20 million-plus personal fortune he does not need to work again," the paper says. "What it certain is that he will have a lot more time to spend with the couple's seven month old baby daughter, Giulia."

Opening a new era in private space flight, the US company SpaceX on Tuesday became the first commercial outfit to launch its own craft toward the International Space Station.The test flight of the Dragon space capsule, which launched atop SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket at 3:44 am (0744 GMT), aims to show that industry can restore US access to the ISS after NASA retired its space shuttle fleet last year.

The mission is set to include a fly-by and berthing with the station in the next three days, before the capsule returns to Earth at the end of this month.

Shortly after liftoff, the cargo-carrying spacecraft entered orbit and live video images showed mission control staff at SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California jumping from their seats, hugging and clapping.

SpaceX chief executive officer and Internet entrepreneur Elon Musk said watching the rocket rise from the launch pad was an "extremely intense moment.""Every bit of adrenaline in my body released at that point," he told reporters after the flawless launch, which followed an attempt on Saturday that was scrubbed at the last second when computers detected high pressure in the central engine of the Falcon 9.

The Cabinet Office's Reward, Efficiency and Reform Group (Rerg), assisted by the Hay Group private consultancy, has drawn up a "local pay map" that will form the basis for how civil servants' pay is set for the next three years. It is understood ministers are working on estimates that show average earnings in the north-east are 10% lower than the UK average, 6% lower in the West Midlands, and 7% lower in Yorkshire and the Humber.

However, the plans threaten to push relations with the civil service – already strained over the reform agenda – to breaking point.

Ian Watmore, 53, who was in charge of cutting costs across departments and headed Rerg, quit last week, six months after he became permanent secretary at the sand maker Cabinet Office, following a series of disagreements with his minister, Francis Maude.

In the civil service, pay is usually set on a 'one size fits all' basis at a national level, whereas in the private sector pay is set in accordance with local labour markets. This means civil servants are often paid more than private sector workers in similar jobs in the same area, which has the potential to hurt private sector businesses."

 

Australia's richest person Gina Rinehart has eclipsed Wal-Mart heiress Christy Walton to become the world's wealthiest woman, according to an annual index by Business Review Weekly.

A preview of the respected BRW Rich 200 list, published Wednesday, put the mining tycoon's personal fortune at Aus$29.17 billion (US$28.48 billion), a figure that sees her outstrip Walton for the first time.

In March, Forbes placed Walton and her family's net worth at US$25.3 billion, while Rinehart's fortune stood at US$18 billion.

BRW rich list editor Andrew Heathcote said mining magnate Rinehart had almost tripled her wealth in 12 months as commodity prices rose and she pulled off two deals in iron ore and coal.

"The Aus$18.87 billion increase in her wealth is unparalleled. It is a product of foreign investment in new projects, increased production and a recovery in theball mill price over the past six months," said Heathcote.

Rinehart, 58, heiress to an iron ore prospecting empire built in Australia's resources-rich west, is a controversial figure who stridently campaigned against new mining taxes and recently bought up big in the media sector.

She is also locked in a series of lawsuits, including an acrimonious row with her own children over a family trust where she has been accused of threatening to financially ruin them.

Heathcote said Rinehart was on track to overtake Mexican telecommunications tycoon Carlos Slim — worth US$69 billion — as the world's richest person as demand ramps up for Australia's natural resources.

"A $100 billion fortune is not out of the question for Rinehart if the resources boom continues unabated," said Heathcote.

"There is a real possibility that Rinehart will become not just the richest woman in the world but the richest person in the world."

The full BRW list of Australia's richest people, the upper rungs of which are usually dominated by mining tycoons, will be unveiled on Thursday.
