Lot of hype and inspiration from people who are basically not very impressive. I know, I solo hiked the whole AT along with the few others who completed the journey end to end. The real challenges come after the 1/2 way point and the magic of really getting to know who you are comes in the last few hundred miles when a lot of people start quitting and you think you are crazy to keep going on and you do it anyways.  Not to say 1000 miles is not impressive, nor 870.  But thousands do that each year.  Only hundreds actually make it..
