The movie marks Oprah Winfrey's first big-screen appearance (other than voice roles in animated movies) since 1998's Beloved.

The movie's story is inspired by Wil Haygoods Washington Post article about a black man who served as White House butler to eight presidents over three decades.

Winfrey plays the mother to Whitaker's character, the title role of butler Cecil Gaines.

The all-star cast also includes Alan Rickman as Ronald Reagan, Jane Fonda as Nancy Reagan,John Cusack as Richard Nixon, James Marsden as John F. Kennedy, Minka Kelly as Jackie Kennedy, Liev Schreiber as Lyndon B. Johnson,Robin Williams as Dwight Eisenhower, Melissa Leo as Mamie Eisenhower, Orlando Eric Street as Barack Obama and Nelsan Ellis as Martin Luther King Jr.

Cuba Gooding Jr., Terrence Howard, Lenny Kravitz, David Oyelowo, Vanessa Redgrave and Alex Pettyfer also are among the ensemble.

The Butler -- which is being touted as a possible Oscar contender -- is set to hit theaters Oct. 18.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index, the market's most widely used barometer, ended up, but just barely: 0.01 point.

The Dow Jones industrial average edged down 43 points, held back by big drops in Procter & Gamble and AT&T. P&G issued a weak quarterly profit forecast and AT&T lost subscribers from its contract-based plans for the first time.

Investors are taking their cue from a heavy dose of earnings this week.

P&G, the maker of Tide detergent and Gillette razors, dropped $4.82, or 5.1 percent, to $77.12 after its profit forecast came in below what financial analysts were expecting. The company reported uneven demand for its new products.

AT&T dropped $1.96, or 5.2 percent, to $37.04 after it lost phone subscribers from its contract-based plans in its latest quarter. It's a sign that industry growth is slowing now that most American have smartphones.

Investors were also disappointed by sales growth at biotech giant Amgen and flat revenues at drugmaker Eli Lilly, though companies such as Boeing and General Dynamics tempered the mood with strong quarterly profits.

So far, 175 of the companies in the S&P 500, or 35 percent, have reported quarterly earnings. Two-thirds of the Dow's members have reported.

While the majority of them have delivered better-than-expected profits, their sales haven't been as strong, suggesting they are struggling to grow.

Sixty-nine percent of companies in the S&P 500 have beaten earnings expectations, better than the 10-year average of 62 percent, according to S&P Capital IQ. However, only 39 percent have beaten revenue forecasts.

Looking ahead, the outlook dims. Of the 35 companies that have given earnings forecasts for the second quarter, 28 are "negative," according to S&P Capital IQ, with only four "positive" and three "in-line."

"We think that most managements are appropriately cautious in their outlooks, because it's very possible that the second-quarter will continue to slow," said Jim Russell, a regional investment director at U.S. Bank. "We're watching with cautious optimism that this is a second-quarter-only soft patch in the economic data."

A report Wednesday that orders for long-lasting U.S. factory goods fell more than economists expected added to concerns that global growth is slowing.

The Commerce Department said orders for durable goods declined 5.7 percent in March following a 4.3 percent gain the previous month. February's figure was also revised lower.

The Dow closed down 43.16 points at 14,676.30, or 0.3 percent. The S&P 500 index was barely changed at 1,578.79. The Nasdaq composite edged up 0.32 point at 3,269.55. The Russell 2000 index of small-company stocks fared better. It rose 0.5 percent, or 4.75 points, to 934.11.

Last week, stocks logged their biggest weekly drop in five months after growth in China, the world's second-biggest economy, slowed and commodity prices plunged. Weaker hiring and manufacturing growth in the U.S. have also weighed on the stock market.

The market's gains in April have slowed sharply after a first-quarter surge pushed both the Dow and the S&P 500 to record highs. The Dow is up just 0.7 percent this month while the S&P 500 has gained 0.6 percent.

During the first three months of the year, the Dow and the S&P 500 averaged monthly gains of more than 3 percent, driven by optimism that the housing and job markets were recovering and that company earnings would continue to climb.

Companies are still making money in the first quarter, however, and are on track to increase their earnings by an average of almost 3 percent, according to S&P Capital IQ.

"Overall, I'm really quite comforted," said David Kelly, chief global strategist at JPMorgan Funds. "It's not an easy environment in which to make money, but companies are finding ways in which to hold costs in line and grow earnings."

Yum Brands, which owns KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, was among the gainers Wednesday, advancing $4.50, or 7.4 percent, to $68.65. Yum turned in earnings late Tuesday that exceeded the expectations of financial analysts.

General Dynamic, the aerospace and defense company, also surged after posting a profit that was better than expected. The stock jumped $4.62, or 6.9 percent, to $71.73.

Boeing climbed $2.65, or 3 percent, to $90.83 after the airplane maker said its first-quarter net income rose 20 percent despite problems with the 787 Dreamliner. The company said it would still meet its financial and delivery targets this year.

U.S. benchmark oil for June delivery rose $2.25 to finish at $91.43 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Gold for June delivery rose $14.90 to $1,423.70 an ounce.

In government bond trading, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 1.71 percent from 1.70. The yield fell to 1.69 percent last week, close to its lowest of the year.

The Red Sox were due to play the Kansas City Royals in a Major League Baseball game at Fenway Park, while the Bruins were down to host the Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League at TD Garden.

"Tonight's Red Sox game at Fenway Park scheduled for 7:10 pm has been postponed to support efforts of law enforcement officers," the Rex Sox announced on their Twitter account.

"We're going to do like everybody else," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "We're just waiting it out and seeing what happens.

"They're not opening the ballpark right now until the situation is resolved."

There was no immediate decision on when the Red Sox would reorganize their game but the NHL tentatively rescheduled the Bruins-Penguins game to Saturday afternoon.

The Penguins were supposed to play Buffalo on Saturday night but that game was moved to April 23.

It was the second time this week that the Bruins rescheduled a game. They were due to play the Ottawa Senators on Monday but moved it to April 28 after the bombing earlier in the day that killed three people and injured 176.

The Boston Celtics and Indiana Pacers also had their National Basketball Association game on Tuesday cancelled.

The game was not rescheduled because the result would have had no impact on the seedings for the NBA playoffs, starting Saturday. The Celtics will open their postseason against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.

Saturday's National Women's Soccer League game in Boston was also rescheduled while the NewYork Red Bulls announced they would honor the Boston marathon victims before Saturday's game against New England Revolution.

The father-in-law of New England goalkeeper Matt Reis was seriously injured in Monday's blasts.

The normally traffic-clogged streets of Boston were eerily quiet on Friday as the search for an ethnic Chechen suspected in the bombings intensified.

Public transport was suspended, air space was restricted and famous universities, including Harvard and MIT, were closed after police ordered residents to remain at home.

"It's pretty scary," Royals reliever Tim Collins said.

"I've never been part of anything like this and, obviously, there are tons of people affected by it but you just have to wait and, hopefully, they get the guy."

Next time you open the refrigerator to grab a tomato or a head of lettuce, you might want to give them an extra good wash.A study from NSF International revealed that your fridge's veggie drawer might be the worst host of bacteria and germs.

Holding both pre-washed and dirty vegetables, the vegetable drawer is an area of cross-contamination.

Most people "don't think that vegetables are that much of a problem," said Lisa Yakas, microbiologist and manager of the Home Products Certification Program for NSF International, a nonprofit organization that develops public health standards. , Yakas suggests washing the bin with warm soapy water and deodorizing with a baking soda mixture if needed.

After a 2011 study revealed that the kitchen was the germiest place in the home, microbioligists reviewed the results after families swabbed 14 common kitchen items. Twenty families from southeastern Michigan participated in the study.

Researchers were hoping to discover the effectiveness of cleaning habits in America and find which items could potentially cause a foodborne illness.They looked for E.coli, Salmonella, Listeria, mold and yeast.

The Center for Disease Control estimates that 48 million people get sick and 3,000 die from foodborne illness each year.Children, elderly and the immune-compromised are the most at-risk.

"I'm a mom so this is something that I think about when I'm at home in my kitchen.You know, how can I protect them?" said Yakas.

Most parents expected the microwave to be the worst offender."A lot of people said the keypad on the microwave," she said.

But since it's a smooth surface, bacteria is less likely to grow.

"Everybody's touching it all of the time, but they probably clean it more often," she said.

The study showed that the blender gasket was another unclean place.Most people don't take the time to separate and individually wash the blender pieces, so they're gunky.

Think the can opener doesn't need to be cleaned?Think again.

"This is another area that people just aren't thinking about it.People just toss it back into the drawer.Food particles can build up and get dried.After using it, clean it off, use a sponge or cloth," said Yakas.

Rubber spatulas were another culprit for germs.Researchers found that many people were not separating the spatula to clean between uses.

If your kitchen isn't spotless, don't panic.

"We're not trying to scare people," said Yakas.She recommends that people get on a regular cleaning routine once they've washed the worst areas.

The White House said President Barack Obama had thanked President Vladimir Putin for Russia's close cooperation on counter-terrorism after the bombing, which U.S. officials suspect was carried out by two ethnic Chechens who once lived in Russia.

"President Putin expressed his condolences on behalf of the Russian people for the tragic loss of life in Boston," the White House said in a statement.

It said Obama had praised cooperation with Russia on counter-terrorism, including after Monday's bombing. The Kremlin appeared to go further, saying the two leaders had agreed they should now step up their work together in this field.

"Both sides underlined their interest in deepening the close cooperation of the Russian and U.S. special services in the fight against international terrorism," it said, but gave no details.

Putin has not commented on the identity of the two suspects, ethnic Chechen brothers who moved to the United States more than a decade ago after briefly living in Russia's volatile southern region of Dagestan.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev was shot dead by police and his brother Dzhokhar was captured after a manhunt.
