PARIS, June 8 (Reuters) - Serena Williams proved an irresistible force once more as she powered past Maria Sharapova 6-4 6-4 to win the French Open for the second time on Saturday - 11 years after her first triumph.

Defending champion Sharapova threw everything at the 31-year-old Williams but came up short as the American became the oldest woman to lift the Suzanne Lenglen Cup since tennis turned professional in 1968.

Apart from an edgy start, when she trailed 2-0, Williams didn't take a backwards step.

The harder Sharapova hit the ball and the louder the Russian grunted, the more Williams fixed her gaze on her rival and replied in clinical fashion.

And if any game defined Williams's performance and what makes her such a phenomenal player, it was the last.

Serving for the championship at 5-4, the American could have been excused a few nerves, especially with Sharapova still scrapping like an alley cat at the other end.

But Williams took a few deep breaths, boomed down an ace, jabbed away a backhand winner after Sharapova had fizzed a return, and then secured victory with two more aces before sinking to her knees in celebration.

Her one hour, 46-minute victory extended her current winning streak to 31 matches and took her haul of grand slam singles titles to 16 from the 20 finals she has contested.

"It was very difficult," Williams, who lost to Sharapova in the 2004 Wimbledon final but beat her three years later in the Australian Open final, said in acceptable French on court.

"After 11 years it's incredible. Thank you to the crowd. I want to come back here and win again. I think I'm Parisienne."

Sharapova rued a few missed opportunities but said she had no complaints, pointing out that Williams's serve is faster than that of men's singles finalist David Ferrer.

"I think getting to the Roland Garros final is not too shabby, so I'd say that's a positive," the 26-year-old said.

"I put up a fight today, but it was not enough."

VIRTUALLY UNSTOPPABLE

Since losing in the first round here last year to Virginie Razzano, Williams has been virtually unstoppable.

Winning the Wimbledon and U.S. Open crowns, her procession was briefly checked at the Australian Open this year when young American Sloane Stephens ambushed her in the quarter-finals.

Saturday's triumph was her sixth title of a year that is on course to become one of the best of her career.

Sharapova had walked on to a muggy Chatrier Court trying to overturn a 12-match losing run against Williams, and things started promisingly as she recovered from 0-40 down in her opening service game and then broke for a 2-0 lead.

Sharapova took heart from some early Williams errors as the American settled, and a second-serve ace helped Sharapova to 40-15 and within a point of establishing a 3-0 lead.

World number one Williams hit back with some thumping drives, though, and broke serve with a solid overhead after forcing Sharapova all over court.

After holding for 2-2, Williams engineered more break points as Sharapova again went 0-40 down, and this time Williams did not let the Russian off the hook, nailing an unreturnable forehand winner that left Sharapova scrambling.

Sharapova refused to be intimidated and dragged herself level at 4-4 when Williams sent a backhand wide.

But there was no respite for Sharapova, and she was under pressure immediately as Williams broke serve for a third time, clenching her fist as a stinging forehand winner flew past her outstretched opponent.

Williams held serve to claim the opener after 51 minutes.

Sharapova began the second set at full tilt, bombarding Williams's baseline, but it was Williams who was the calmer, more efficient and more creative player.

However frantically Sharapova seemed to be pedalling, Williams cruised along in a higher gear before surging into the distance.

Williams failed to convert two break points at 0-0 but at 1-1 the pressure began to tell on Sharapova, who surrendered serve with a miss-hit backhand into the tramlines.

Four-times grand slam champion Sharapova, thrashed by Williams in last year's Olympic singles final, hung on in the hope that Williams's level would drop.

It proved a forlorn hope.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Herbal supplements aimed at improving men's sexual abilities often contain the active ingredients in erectile dysfunction pills such as Viagra, according to a new study.

Additionally, researchers found that some of these over-the-counter herbal remedies contained more of the ingredient than is allowed in prescription-only pharmaceuticals.

"It's pretty scary stuff," said Neil Campbell, the lead author of the study and a researcher at Pfizer, which sells Viagra. "These products are not herbal at all, they're adulterated."

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which is in charge of regulating herbal supplements, posted 11 warnings to consumers in 2013 alerting them of unlabeled pharmaceuticals being found in these products.

Campbell and his colleagues analyzed 91 samples from 58 products.

They sent undercover consumers into convenience stores and gas stations in the Atlanta and Baltimore areas, and bought products such as Rize 2 The Occasion, Stiff 4 Hours, and Man King.

Although 57 of the products claimed to be "all natural," 81 percent of them contained the tadalafil or sildenafil (marketed as Cialis and Viagra, respectively) or similar ingredients that are not approved by the FDA.

The products also had labeling problems, indicating poor quality production, according to the authors. In some cases, expiration dates or lot numbers were missing, manufacturers could not be identified, or samples of the same product had different appearances.

"There's so little effort to do something the right way to produce a legitimate product," Campbell told Reuters Health. "This is an all time low."

None of 10 supplement companies contacted by Reuters Health responded to a request for comment, nor did the FDA.

Campbell said given the potential side effects and health risks associated with prescription erectile dysfunction drugs, men are "risking their lives" taking herbal sex enhancement drugs.

"Almost one patient a day says they've tried Mojo or one of these over-the-counter products," said Dr. Gregory Lowe, an assistant professor of urology at Ohio State University who was not part of this study.

"One of the big concerns is that we don't know what the patient's getting," he added.

Seven samples that Campbell's group analyzed contained only unknown substances.

"Commonly, I hear patients say, 'it worked one time and it didn't work other times.' And that fits in well with what they found here" that quality control is lacking, he added.

It's unclear where the ingredients are coming from.

Lowe advises men who are interested in taking these pills to talk to their doctors first.

He says patients often turn to these products because they are cheap - costing between $2.99 and $17.99, according to Campbell's study, published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.

But they are taking a health risk in doing so.

Erectile dysfunction medicines can be unsafe for men taking nitrates for chest pain, but only 14 of the samples in the study included a warning against combining the drugs.

"Unfortunately, to an unwitting patient they think they're taking an herbal product," said Campbell. "It really poses a really scary threat for patient health and safety."

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Internal Revenue Service has suspended two employees - including one working on President Barack Obama's healthcare initiative - for improperly accepting gifts at an agency conference, two congressional staff members briefed on the matter told Reuters on Wednesday.

The tax-collecting agency - already battling a political scandal and accusations of lavish spending - has begun a process to remove the two employees for violating ethics rules pending a review, the IRS said.

"There was clearly inappropriate behavior involved in this situation, and immediate action is needed," acting IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel said in a statement on Wednesday.

The agency did not identify the suspended employees, but congressional aides briefed on the matter said they were Fred Schindler, an IRS official in Washington, and Donald Toda, an IRS employee based in California.

Messages left at their office numbers were not returned.

The aides said that Schindler works for Sarah Ingram, who now leads the IRS's office responsible for enforcing tax laws related to the Affordable Care Act, the Obama administration's makeover of the U.S. healthcare system.

Ingram has been under scrutiny in recent weeks because in 2009 and 2010, she led the IRS office that inappropriately targeted conservative groups for extra scrutiny when they applied for tax-exempt status.

The IRS's acknowledgement last month that the targeting occurred has ignited a political scandal that has led to the departure or suspension of three top IRS officials, including Ingram's successor in the agency's tax-exempt division.

At least three congressional panels are investigating the targeting of conservative groups with names such as "Tea Party," and "Patriots," while the Justice Department has launched a criminal probe.

The suspensions on Wednesday were not related to the targeting scandal, but rather to a Treasury inspector general's report that criticized extravagant spending by the IRS in 2010, a year in which Treasury reported that the tax agency spent $38 million on conferences designed to educate and boost the morale of its employees.

The Treasury report focused on a conference held for the IRS small business division in Anaheim, California, in 2010.

Some of the perks IRS employees enjoyed - potentially in lieu of better room rates - included room upgrades, the report said. The commissioner of the agency's small business and self-employed division stayed five nights in a room that the Treasury report described as having a private bedroom, wet bar and billiard table, the report said.

That official, Faris Fink, will be grilled on Thursday by members of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. Fink will also under the spotlight because he acted as the "Star Trek," television and movie series character Mr. Spock in an employee training video spoof, an expenditure also detailed in the Treasury's report on wasteful spending.

OHIO IRS WORKERS INTERVIEWED

The House Oversight panel is among congressional committees examining the political targeting scandal, which has led Republicans to question whether the Obama administration, in the months before the 2012 election, was involved in trying to stifle conservative groups that generally oppose the president.

The White House has rejected such suggestions. A Treasury inspector general's report that first detailed the targeting scandal did not find any evidence that the administration was involved.

Congressional investigators have been interviewing workers from the IRS's office in Cincinnati, Ohio, headquarters to the agency's tax-exempt division, which carried out the targeting of conservative groups in its role examining groups for tax-exempt status.

Investigators conducted their latest interview with an IRS employee in the Cincinnati office this week, and have another planned in the coming days, according to a congressional aide.

On Thursday, the House Committee on Oversight - led by California Republican Darrell Issa, a vocal critic of the administration - will focus on overspending by the IRS.

Agency rules allow government employees to accept items worth $20 or less, provided the total value of gifts from the same person is not more than $50 in a calendar year, according to the Office of Government Ethics.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration on Tuesday criticized the IRS for wasteful spending on conferences. It said the tax agency spent about $50 million on more than 220 conferences in recent years, including to pay for luxurious hotel rooms and motivational speakers.

The inspector general said IRS employees at the Anaheim conference failed to negotiate lower hotel rates and instead sought free food and more expensive hotel suites.

In response to widespread criticism of its spending, the IRS has noted that the amount it has spent on conferences has dropped dramatically, from about $38 million in 2010 to less than $5 million in fiscal 2012.

The gains were muted in the wake of the ECB's widely expected decision to keep its main interest rate unchanged at the record low of 0.5 percent and ahead of another raft of U.S. economic data in the run-up to Friday's nonfarm payrolls report for May.

Though Draghi may say something at his regular monthly press conference about boosting lending to smaller firms in the ailing eurozone economy, few market participants were expecting anything dramatic.

"He is unlikely to promise the imminent and bold action that would be needed to make a meaningful difference to the economic outlook or to gain ground on more proactive central banks elsewhere," said Jennifer McKeown, senior European economist at Capital Economics.

Following the decision, the euro was trading in a fairly narrow range, up 0.2 percent at $1.3113. At previous meetings the euro has seen the bulk of trading activity during Draghi's press conference.

Among stock markets, Germany's DAX was up 0.4 percent at 8,233 while the CAC-40 in France rose 0.6 percent to 3,878. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was up 0.2 percent at 6,434 after the Bank of England left its monetary policy unchanged, as expected.

Trading on a number of European exchanges started about an hour late Thursday after a problem with NYSE Euronext's systems prevented customers from placing orders. Exchanges in Paris, Lisbon, Brussels and Amsterdam were affected by the unexplained glitch.

Wall Street was poised for a solid opening, with both Dow futures and the broader S&P futures up 0.3 percent.

Once the ECB meeting is out of the way and a cursory glance is given to weekly U.S. jobless claims, the focus will be on Friday's U.S. payrolls data.

This week's economic news out of the U.S. has been disappointing and investors now think it's less likely that the Fed will decide to reduce the amount of financial assets it has been buying in the markets in the hope of stimulating the U.S. economy.

Fed chief Ben Bernanke has said the U.S. central bank might pull back on its $85 billion-a-month bond-buying program as economic data improves. But other Fed officials have spoken about a winding down of asset purchases sooner. The uncertainty over a possible tapering of the stimulus has been a cause for concern for many stock investors over the past couple of weeks.

The purchases have been one of the main drivers in financial markets in recent years and have contributed to the rise in many global indexes to record highs.

In Asia, markets responded to the weakness experienced the previous day in Europe and the U.S.

The Nikkei closed down 0.9 percent at 12,904.02. That's on top of Wednesday's 3.8 percent fall. Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 1.1 percent to 21,838.43, while Shanghai's main index dropped 1.3 percent to 2,346.80. Markets in South Korea were closed for a public holiday.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Will Smith may be one of Hollywood's most bankable action stars, but his new film, "After Earth," in which he stars with his 14-year-old son Jaden, has opened to cold reviews from critics and faces stiff competition in a busy box office weekend.

"After Earth" is a futuristic post-apocalyptic tale of a father and his teenage son in which the young boy must embark on a life-saving mission.

Sony Pictures Entertainment, a division of Sony Corp., spent about $130 million to produce the movie, making it one of the studio's biggest summer releases.

The story is centered on the father-son relationship and the dynamic of a father passing the mantle to his son is mirrored both on screen and off, as the younger Smith leads the action.

Will Smith, 44, who wrote the initial story and was the executive producer of the film, said the project gave him valuable time to spend with his son, with whom he first starred in the 2006 family drama, "The Pursuit of Happyness."

"Filmmaking and entertainment is our family business," Smith said at a recent news conference. "So, it really gave us an opportunity for the last year to spend ten or twelve hours a day together, every day. And for me it's just the best way, for me at least, to parent."

Jaden Smith bears a strong resemblance to his famous father and won over most critics as the lead in 2010's reboot of "The Karate Kid." However, he has not been received as warmly for his performance as ranger Kitai Raige in "After Earth."

NEGATIVE REVIEWS

Variety's Scott Foundas said both father and son failed to meet expectations. "Senior Smith gives one of the least substantive performances of his career, while the undeniably charismatic Jaden toggles between ... paralyzing fear and simmering rage."

Manohla Dargis wrote in the New York Times that the younger Smith was "a pretty teenager with jumpy eyebrows whose character remains an insufferable brat."

Rolling Stone's Peter Travers slammed the script as "an unholy mess of platitudes and posturing." He gave the film one out of five stars, saying "It's not a good sign when you sit there thinking one thing - Make. It. Stop."

"After Earth" scored just 32 out of 100 on Metacritic.com, which compiles ratings based on critics' reviews. Only 13 percent of critics recommended the movie in reviews collected on the Rotten Tomatoes website.

This is despite the fact that the film was directed by M. Night Shayamalan, who scored a huge hit with the 1999 suspense drama "The Sixth Sense," which grossed more than $672 million at the worldwide box office. Shayamalan was less successful though with 2006's "Lady in the Water" and 2010's "The Last Airbender."

Box office forecasters predict "After Earth" will make $35- $40 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales from Friday through Sunday.

The film opened on Thursday and took in $1 million at U.S. and Canadian theaters, behind Lions Gate Entertainment's comedy heist caper "Now You See Me," which earned $1.5 million.

"After Earth" faces tough competition this weekend from recent releases still drawing big business, such as car-chase sequel "Fast & Furious 6," superhero tale "Iron Man 3," and sci-fi film "Star Trek Into Darkness."

"It's not an enviable task opening up this weekend," said Phil Contrino, chief analyst with Boxoffice.com. International sales will be critical, he said, since Will Smith remains a big draw for overseas audiences.

Sony Pictures spokesman Steve Elzer said a weekend take of about $30 million in the United States and Canada would be a solid number for a movie that is not a branded sequel.

Sony's other upcoming summer films include action thriller "White House Down," sci-fi adventure "Elysium," and book adaptation "The Moral Instruments: City of Bones."

Tillis told The Associated Press in an interview Thursday that he'll file campaign committee paperwork in Washington early next week. He becomes the first high-profile Republican to announce a bid. Only Greg Brannon of Cary had publicly joined the race.

Tillis is a four-term legislator from suburban Charlotte who has led the House since 2011. He told the AP he's seeking the GOP nomination because he's proved he can work with Democrats to get things done in Raleigh. He says the bipartisanship pushed by Hagan has failed.

Hagan is a former state senator from Greensboro who unseated Republican Sen. Elizabeth Dole in an upset in 2008.

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Father Andrew M. Greeley, an outspoken Roman Catholic priest who wrote more than 50 novels and publicly feuded with his superior John Cardinal Cody, died at the age of 85 in his Chicago home, a spokeswoman said Thursday.

"Father Andrew Greeley was the most influential American Catholic sociologist of the 20th century," said Father Tom Reese, a senior analyst at the National Catholic Reporter. "He was the first to show how Humanae Vitae, the encyclical on birth control by Pope Paul VI, split the church and made the laity question church authority."

Greeley had been silenced in 2008, when he suffered a fall after his clothing got caught in the door of a taxi as it pulled away. A resulting brain injury left him unable to write or make public appearances, according to his niece, Laura Durkin.

He died in his sleep early Thursday morning, his spokeswoman, June Rosner, said.

A proponent of reform within the Catholic Church, Greeley also wrote more than 100 works of non-fiction, including "Priests: A Calling in Crisis" and "The Catholic Revolution: New Wine in Old Wineskins and the Second Vatican Council."

"He was first and foremost a parish priest ... his parish were the people who read his columns and his books," said Durkin. "He was a priest and he loved the church."

Greeley's sometimes racy fiction dealt with some of the challenges facing the church. "The Priestly Sins," published in 2004 during the height of the sex abuse scandal, focused on an idealistic priest after he reported child abuse by a fellow priest.

Greeley, who recently celebrated his 59th anniversary as a priest, criticized church leadership over its position on birth control and the handling of the sexual abuse crisis.

"He served the church all those years with a prophetic voice and with unfailing dedication, and the church he and our parents taught us to love is a better place because of him," read a family statement, supplied by Rosner.

Greeley - who had a person website, http://www.agreeley.com/ - had masters and doctoral degrees from the University of Chicago, and was a research associate with the university's National Opinion Research Center and a professor of sociology at the University of Arizona.

Greeley is survived by a sister, five nieces, two nephews and 18 grand nieces and nephews.

'WEAKNESS FOR WORDS'

Many of Greeley's novels were best sellers. "The Cardinal Sins" in 1981 sold more than 3 million copies, according to a statement from the University of Chicago. It is the story of an archbishop who fathers a child.

Greeley famously feuded with Cardinal Cody of Chicago - whom he called a monster, crazy and "one of the most truly evil men I have ever known" - but denied Cody was the basis for the "Cardinal Sins" archbishop.

"People like stories. We are all story tellers," Greeley once told Reuters. "I'm convinced that people followed Jesus because he was a good storyteller."

His writings also covered education, sex, ethnicity, euthanasia, politics, war and other topics, and his engaging manner made him a sought-after interview subject on television.

"I suppose I have the Irish weakness for words gone wild," Greeley told the New York Times. "Besides, if you're celibate you have to do something."

His books made him wealthy and he owned an apartment in a posh downtown skyscraper. He responded to criticism of his wealth by telling People magazine. "What I do with my money is between me and God and the IRS. I think I'm generous with it. I'm willing to face God on the way I've spent it."

Greeley established a $1 million endowment at the University of Chicago for Catholic studies. He also gave money for scholarships to the Chicago archdiocese.

"Father Greeley could be irritatingly smart and a touch righteous, and some of his romantic novels bordered on the silly, but he dreamed a very special American Catholic democratic dream and we Catholics would have done well to have listened to him more closely," said David O'Brien, a historian of U.S. Catholicism and a distinguished visiting professor at the University of Dayton in Ohio. "He has been sorely missed since an accident silenced his public voice."

Their deal is the latest example of growing collaboration between entertainment companies in the world's two biggest movie markets.

Legendary, which also made "Inception" and "The Dark Knight," said its Chinese venture, Legendary East, signed an agreement with the Chinese company's unit, China Film Co., on Thursday in Beijing. The deal calls for the companies to fund development and production of multiple films over three years.

Their first collaborations will be announced in the coming months. Legendary said each is planned as a US-China co-production. That means they can get around China's import restrictions that limit the number of foreign movies shown on the country's 12,000 screens to 34 each year.

The companies said they plan to produce movies for global audiences that will be "tentpole-scale" in other words, the big-budget, highly promoted productions that earn enough box-office revenue to support the whole studio, in the same way that a tentpole holds up a tent.

No specific details were released.

In a statement, China Film Co. Chairman Han Sanping said the partnership will allow the companies to "make films that are more appealing to filmgoers, creating new genres that, through the magic of film, bring greater variety to audiences around the world."

Faced with stagnant box-office growth at home, Hollywood studios are keen to break into China, now the world's second-biggest film market. Box-office receipts in China totaled $2.7 billion last year and pushed the country's movie market past previous second-biggest, Japan, according to the Motion Picture Association of America.

Legendary East was set up in 2011 with the aim of making one or two "major, event-style films" starting in 2013. But the company had remained quiet since then and a plan to raise $220.5 through a deal with a Hong Kong construction company was scuppered by rocky financial markets.
