Danish supermodel Nina Agdal took Upton’s place, and attended the dance with him in Sherman Oaks, Calif. on Thursday, San Bernadino’s The Sun newspaper.

Davidson said that Agdal, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition’s 2012 rookie of the year, was “[s]o down to earth. Really cool. Really nice.”

He produced a YouTube video earlier this year inviting Upton to his prom, but her schedule would not allow it. The video of him shaving and doing pushups in order to impress her went viral, ultimately generating over 2.6 million views. He didn’t end up with Upton on his arm, but he did show up at the prom with a supermodel — most famous for her sexy Carl’s Jr. commercial — as his date.

Davidson told “Inside Edition” that Adgal is “as beautiful as it gets,” and Agdal tweeted a photo of the couple together with the message, “Had such a great prom night. Thank you @jakedavidson23 for being an awesome date!”

But sometimes things do, in fact, go horribly wrong, as in the case of a Syracuse, New York, resident who awoke during a trip to the emergency room to find that .

The Post-Standard reports that in October 2009, Colleen S. Burns was taken to the emergency room atsuffering from a drug overdose. Although a nurse told doctors that Burns was recovering from her overdose, those same doctors pronounced her dead.

A call was placed to her family informing them that Burns had passed away, and the family subsequently agreed to have her removed from life support and .

But Burns was not dead. In fact, a number of signs clearly pointed to her being alive. When a nurse performed a mandatory reflex test on Burns, her toes curled downward. She appeared to be breathing independently of a hospital respirator, and her lips and tongue were said to have moved moments before doctors prepared to remove her organs.

Nonetheless, the nurse then followed instructions to give Burns a powerful sedative, a seemingly unnecessary move if the patient were actually dead.

Thankfully, Burns awoke moments before doctors were going to cut her open to remove the organs from her presumed-dead body.

"Despite this sequence of events," said a federal report from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, "intensive objective peer review and root cause analysis of the case was not done by the hospital's quality assurance program until prompted by the Department of Health."

"They were just kind of shocked themselves," Burns mother, Lucille Kuss, told the paper when asked how doctors responded to the morbid mistake. "It came as a surprise to them as well."

Its unlikely that Burns case was entirely isolated. A report from the American Association for Justice claims thatin the U.S.

The hospital was sanctioned for its actions and cited for a number of mistakes that placed the patients health in jeopardy. But in a development that is nearly as shocking as the mistakes themselves, the hospital was only fined a total of $22,000. Burns herself declined to sue the hospital after the incident even though the hospital, whose motto is "," never even explained to her why the mistake had occurred.

Although the fines were levied in September 2012, they were first made public in a reported obtained by The Post-Standard on Sunday.

Burns, who fully recovered from her injuries at the time, committed suicide in 2011 at the age of 41. But her mother says Burns was already suffering from a number of issues and that the hospital incident did not play a role in her eventual suicide.

"She was so depressed that it really didn't make any difference to her," Kuss told the paper.

For its part, St. Josephs has stood by its medical staff.

"St. Joseph's goal is to provide the highest quality of care to every patient, every time," Howell said in an email to The Post-Standard. "These policies were followed in this case, which was complicated in terms of care and diagnosis," Howell said. "We've learned from this experience and have modified our policies to include the type of unusual circumstance presented in this case."

And as if all of that is not unsettling enough, one consumer advocate told The Post-Standard that theres currently no way of accounting for how often these cases happen, because there is no centralized system for collecting information on hospital errors.

"These sorts of things do happen," Lisa McGiffert, director of, told the paper. "It's pretty disturbing."

The bomb was concealed inside a Somali military pick-up truck in Mogadishu's sprawling Bakara market, Mogadishu police official Mohamed Hussein said.

The bomb was remotely detonated as soldiers boarded the truck, according to Mogadishu police official Abdikafi Nor. The soldiers then fired into the air to disperse nearby pedestrians, he said. Soldiers have sealed off the market area to investigate.

It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the attack, but the al-Qaida-linked rebels of al-Shabab frequently stage similar attacks in Mogadishu and elsewhere in Somalia. The market where the blast happened once was favored by militants who used it to trade and collect taxes before they were ousted.

African Union forces expelled al-Shabab from Mogadishu in August 2011, ending years of daily violence that had caused the rest of the world to shun the capital for two decades. After the ouster of al-Shabab the international community started trickling back into the capital, and the United Nations began moving its personnel to Somalia from Kenya.

But the extremists of al-Shabab still hold sway in large parts of rural southern Somalia and retain the ability to stage lethal attacks even in Mogadishu. Last month militants on a suicide mission invaded the U.N. compound in Mogadishu with a truck bomb and then poured inside, killing at least 13 people before dying in the assault.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Colombia has extradited suspected drug kingpin Daniel Barrera to the United States to face charges of drug trafficking and money laundering, U.S. authorities said on Tuesday.

The Colombian citizen is accused of manufacturing hundreds of tons of cocaine in Colombia and trafficking it worldwide, according to an announcement from U.S. attorneys in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Miami.

Known as "Loco," Barrera "was the kingpin of a stunningly prolific Colombian drug cartel, which flooded the globe with its deadly product," said Loretta Lynch, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York.

"His extradition to the United States marks the fall of the last don of an organization marked by its worldwide reach, ruthless criminality, and staggering profits," Lynch added in her statement.

Barrera's lawyer could not be reached for comment.

Barrera is accused of buying raw cocaine paste from the leftist rebel group FARC and processing it in laboratories in areas controlled by the now-demobilized paramilitary group the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia, known as AUC, according to a statement from Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara.

Barrera's organization produced more than 400 tons of cocaine annually, according to Bharara, who said Barrera "operated at the center of a truly evil web."

Barrera arrived in New York Tuesday afternoon from his home country, and will make his first court appearance on Wednesday, according to the announcement.

He was arrested in Venezuela in September 2012 with the help of authorities there as well as British and U.S. intelligence agencies, Reuters previously reported.

His arrest came as Colombian authorities were closing in on his organization, having arrested 36 members of his gang and seizing five tons of cocaine in the weeks before his arrest.

...there is a lot of value out there, but I don't think that you need to be a hero by buying the cheapest names - this is a quality name that's been sold off heavily.

TWST: In your coverage right now, who are your top picks that pay a dividend?

Mr. Rawson: Among the yield names, definitely Crescent Point (CPG.TO) sticks out as a very well-run company with a well-regarded management team and business model. It is focused in a few key top-notch oily resource plays, it has great netbacks and is very conservatively run in terms of its balance sheet, hedge book and track record of managing Street expectations.

It typically trades at a premium multiple supporting its business acquisition model, which has been one of the cornerstones of its strategy in the past. Right now though, it has sold off, and it's quite attractive on today's valuation, yielding close to 8%. On our numbers, it's trading at about eight times debt-adjusted cash flow this year, which is really quite cheap compared to its typical trading multiple historically.

TWST: Looking ahead, is there anything that you see on the horizon that could significantly either hurt or help the sector?

Mr. Rawson: I think differentials and how they play out is a key risk to the downside or to the upside. I think the differential question wasn't one that investors even focused on until a year ago, and because there are so many moving parts, it's a difficult one to get your arms around. It's a difficult thing to forecast.

Mikhail Grabovski, anyone?

Otherwise, many of the available impact players were swept up in the first few hours after the NHL's free-agency opened Friday.

A total of 60 players were signed in deals involving 26 of the league's 30 teams, according to a list posted on NHL.com. They included Columbus landing Nathan Horton to a $37.1 million, seven-year contract and Daniel Alfredsson leaving Ottawa for a one-year deal in Detroit. Toronto signed David Clarkson to a $36.75 million, seven-year deal, while Jarome Iginla signed a one-year deal with Boston, the team he jilted for Pittsburgh earlier this season.

And then another nine were traded, with the biggest move involving the Senators filling the void Alfredsson left by acquiring Anaheim forward Bobby Ryan in exchange for two forwards and a first-round draft pick.

At the rate players were being signed and swapped, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren was relieved to have addressed most of his team's needs before the market officially opened.

"I didn't think the defense market was as strong as centers. The better ones went right away," Holmgren said, while formally announcing the team had signed captain Claude Giroux to an eight-year extension worth over $64 million. "I think we were fortunate to jump in on Mark when we did."

Holmgren was referring to defenseman Mark Streit, who was acquired in a trade with the New York Islanders before Philadelphia locked him up to a four-year, $21 million contract last week. Holmgren also could have mentioned Philadelphia getting Vincent Lecavalier this summer's most prized free agent to agree to a five-year deal on Tuesday.

That didn't stop Holmgren from signing goalies Ray Emery and Yann Danis on Friday to shore up what remains an unsettled position.

Beyond that, it's a wonder anyone's still available.

Former Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov's still on the market. So are two ex-Detroit teammates, Damien Brunner and Daniel Cleary. As for defense, there's Toni Lydman.

And then there's Teemu Selanne, who usually takes his time in free agency. Ducks general manager Bob Murray is scheduled to contact Selanne next week to see whether the Finn is close to making a decision on returning for one more year.

Many players came to much quicker decisions.

Alfredsson was driven to the Motor City by the opportunity to win a championship, and was joined, soon after, by center Stephen Weiss, who agreed to a five-year, $24.5 million contract.

"It's all about trying to get the Stanley Cup," Alfredsson said.

For others, it was the lure of finding the right fit.

Horton was willing to give up big-city living in Boston, for the chance to raise his family in a more collegiate environment such as Columbus.

"It's a great opportunity for me and my family to be in a house and for it to be a little more quiet," Horton said, while noting he is also eager to help transform the Blue Jackets into contenders. "I want to be in the playoffs and everybody else does (here), and we've got the team to do it. That's why I'm so excited."

The Toronto Maple Leafs, coming off their first postseason appearance since 2004, also made a statement by signing Clarkson and keeping first-line center Tyler Bozak with a $21 million, five-year deal.

Tampa Bay reached a $25 million, five-year deal with 29-year-old center Valtteri Filppula to essentially replace Lecavalier.

Ottawa wasn't expecting Alfredsson to bolt.

"It was a devastating conversation, a disappointing one, hard to swallow," Senators general manager Bryan Murray acknowledged. "But I understand a veteran player that hasn't won and wants to win and sees a better opportunity."

The Senators, though, got younger and perhaps better up front by acquiring Ryan. Ottawa sent forwards Jakob Silfverbeg, Stefan Noesen and its first-round pick in next year's draft to the Ducks for the four-time 30-goal scorer.

A lot of other teams also made moves to jockey for position in the parity-filled league:

The Phoenix Coyotes, with a new owner, signed forward Mike Ribeiro to a four-year, $22 million contract.

The New Jersey Devils signed forward Ryane Clowe to a five-year, $24.25 million contract, and forward Michael Ryder to a two-year, $7 million deal.

The Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks re-signed defenseman Michal Rozsival, forward Michal Handzus and gave 40-year goalie Nikolai Khabibulin a one-year deal to replace Emery.

The Pittsburgh Penguins reunited with defenseman Rob Scuderi by giving him a four-year $13.5 million deal.

The New York Islanders re-signed goalie Evgeni Nabokov to a one-year, $3.25 million deal and defenseman Travis Hamonic to a seven-year, $27 million contract, and signed free-agent forward Pierre-Marc Bouchard to a one-year, $2 million contract.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - When Alex Godson accepted his first unpaid internship in Brussels after receiving a master's degree in international relations from the University of Manchester, he believed a full-time position was just a few months away.

But Godson bounced from one low-paid traineeship to another for three years before finally landing a proper job in May at the European Movement International, a Brussels-based group that lobbies for a federal Europe.

He is just one of the thousands of young graduates who toil on the Brussels treadmill without job security, benefits or sometimes even a salary under the noses of European Union leaders meeting this week to declare war on youth unemployment.

"When you're just rolling from one unpaid traineeship to another, you're not on a path to anywhere," said Godson, who had to rely on his parents for money. "There's always that intern in the office, and you're just the person holding that position at the moment."

EU leaders have pledged to ensure that every young European who is out of work will be offered a proper job, training or an apprenticeship within four months. They will announce more money to back that drive on Friday.

But if they just look around them, they will see plenty of unpaid or underpaid youth slaving away in Europe's engine room.

Often dependent on grants or donations that shrink when the economy turns down, the many non-governmental organizations and think-tanks in Brussels have become increasingly reliant on short-term hires.

Graduates trying to build a CV make a good fit - young, ambitious and willing to put in long hours at very low pay.

LOW PAY, NO PAY

The European Commission offers some 1,400 sought-after five-month traineeships a year with a 1,074 euros monthly salary that is top tier, according to Sophia Kabir, a representative for the networking organization Young Professionals in Foreign Policy.

This so-called "stage", French for work experience, is often the first rung on an EU career ladder. Yet the pay is well below the Belgian minimum wage requirement of 1,500 euros per month. Many other advertised positions offer monthly stipends of a few hundred euros and sometimes nothing at all.

Valentina Mat, with a master's degree in international politics from the University of London, received just eight euros a day in food allowance when she worked for a Brussels-based international development organization for a year.

"Even in the offices of some members of the parliament there are trainees employed who are paid very little or nothing at all," Franz Obermayr, an Austrian member of the European Parliament, complained in a letter to the legislature's president, Martin Schulz.

Traineeships are supposed to provide training, but the line between that and actual employment is often blurred.

Caritas Europa, an umbrella organization for Roman Catholic charities that champions social justice, advertises three-month unpaid advocacy internships for which candidates are required to have a bachelor's or master's degree in law or politics, fluency in English and French, reporting skills, "excellent" IT skills and prior experience working in or with EU institutions - a list arguably fit for a full-time employee.

Peter Verhaege, the group's migration officer, told Reuters that while resources are thin, giving young people experience is "the least we can do."

Not everyone agrees.

"It's modern slavery," Kabir said. "People in my generation are struggling to understand their market value."

Just last week, , ruling that excluding same-sex married couples from the federal definition of marriage unfairly discriminated against people in those unions. Now, a federal judge in Michigan has green-lighted a discrimination case brought by a same-sex couple that could be among the first to test how the DOMA decision will affect the dozens of state-level gay marriage bans around the country.

The case involves April DeBoer and Jayne Rowse, two female nurses who live together with their adopted children in Hazel Park, Mich. The same-sex couple wants to jointly adopt their three children, but the Michigan Marriage Amendment, which defines marriage in the state as between only opposite-sex couples, prevents them from legally doing so. (Separately, the state allows only single people and married heterosexual couples to adopt.)

In a court filing on Monday, District Judge Bernard Friedman denied a motion from the Michigan government to dismiss the couple's case, ruling that the Supreme Court's DOMA decision, Windsor v. U.S., shed new light on the claim.

Plaintiffs are prepared to claim Windsor as their own. ... And why shouldnt they? The Supreme Court has just invalidated a federal statute on equal protection grounds because it place[d] same-sex couples in an unstable position of being in a second-tier marriage. Moreover, and of particular importance to this case, the justices expressed concern that the natural consequence of such discriminatory legislation would not only lead to the relegation of same-sex relationships to a form of second-tier status, but impair the rights of tens of thousands of children now being raised by same-sex couples as well. This is exactly the type of harm plaintiffs seek to remedy in this case.

But Friedman, a Ronald Reagan appointee, also noted that the state will be able to use the Windsor decision in its defense as well.

The justices wrote in that opinion that states have a "historic and essential authority to define the marital relation," an authority that DOMA intruded upon. Michigan can argue that its voters have a right to define marriage as only between a man and a woman under this authority, even as 12 states choose to allow same-sex marriages.

Justice Anthony Kennedy, the court's conservative-leaning swing vote, wrote in the Windsor opinion that DOMA imposed "a disadvantage, a separate status, and so a stigma upon all who enter into same-sex marriages made lawful by the unquestioned authority of the States." He concluded that states must be allowed by the federal government to confer "dignity" on same-sex couples if they choose to legalize gay marriage without the federal government telling "those couples, and all the world, that their otherwise valid marriages are unworthy of federal recognition."

The case is just one of several challenging state gay marriage bans that are making their way through the courts. Gay couples are suing in Nevada, Illinois, Hawaii and New Jersey, which allow civil unions or domestic partnerships but not gay marriage. The Supreme Court stopped short of ruling there is a fundamental right to marriage that gay and lesbian people should not be denied, so it's unclear how the justices would rule if one of these cases reached them.

A date has not yet been set for the Michigan trial.

U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson in Washington, D.C., posted a brief note on the court's docket saying Wednesday's hearing for the Chicago Democrat and his wife would be held later. She didn't set a new date.

Jackson, the son of civil rights leader the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr., pleaded guilty this year to spending $750,000 in campaign funds on personal items, including a gold-plated Rolex and mounted elk heads, among other things.

He faces a maximum five-year prison term. Under his plea agreement, Jackson must pay back the $750,000 and he will be subject to a host of other financial penalties.

Jackson's wife, Sandi Jackson, was to be sentenced at the same hearing on a related conviction.

Last week, prosecutors filed a forfeiture motion listing the Jackson's two homes, which observers said could result in them losing one or both of them.

The Jacksons have two school-aged children, and the judge must decide whether to stagger their sentences so that they won't both be in prison at the same time.

In April, Alexander was contacted by farmers Bruce and Nelva Lilienthal, who sent the professor photos of a peculiar stone they'd found a couple years ago while clearing their corn field in Arlington, Minn.

The rock, which is about 16 inches by 12 inches (40.6 centimeters by 30.5 cm) across, and about 2 inches (5 cm) thick, weighs a surprising 33 pounds (15 kg) about three times more than a regular Earth rock of that size. Its weight, as well as its unusual flattened shape and rusty surface, immediately suggested it was special. "I said, 'That certainly looks like a meteorite, but I need to see it up close to tell for sure,'" Alexander recalled. []

On May 30, the couple brought their find to Alexander's lab and allowed him to chip 0.02 ounces (0.6 grams) off the edge of it for analysis under a scanning electron microscope. The rock was iron, and contained about 8 percent nickel a telltale giveaway. Iron objects on Earth contain almost no nickel, but iron rocks from space are usually between 5 and 20 percent nickel. The microscope also revealed what's called a Widmansttten pattern of nickel-iron crystals that's .

To say that the revelation was welcome news would be a major understatement.

"I am about to retire at the end of next year, and this was thethat's been brought in," Alexander told SPACE.com. "Yes, ma'am, I was excited. I am still excited."

Though they haven't spent decades waiting for something like this, the Lilienthals are coming to appreciate their find just as much.

"It's not something we were expecting to find, but now that we've found out what it is, it's been exciting to learn about it," said Nelva Lilienthal.

Her husband Bruce had come upon the rock two years ago during the annual spring field clearing, when the farmers comb over their land to pick up the many rocks that have been turned up from the frost over the winter.

"You pick up hundreds and hundreds of rocks," Bruce Lilienthal said. "You pick 'em up and you get your fields planted. When we found it, we thought it was kind of different and we put it aside."

The couple noticed the rock's unsettling weight and rare appearance, but didn't think too much of it at the time, and added it to their pile of interesting finds.

"At that point it was time to plant our fields again and we put it off until a rainy day," Nelva said.

Recently, they revisited the issue, and their son, who works for the University of Minnesota, made some inquiries at the school and was referred to Alexander.

Since the discovery of the rock's true nature, the object has taken on more importance.

"It's probably not the prettiest rock that we've got in the pile it looks kind of like a burnt pizza but I'm really liking it more," Nelva told SPACE.com. "With all this publicity, it's becoming a favorite."

The future for the space rock is unclear right now. Because it fell on the Lilienthals' property, it legally belongs to them. They may decide to hold onto their , or they may not.

"It's a novelty right now," Bruce said. "The university wants to do more tests on it, so we'll let them do more tests and then we'll decide if we want to sell it or keep it."

Alexander would love to be able to study the rock in detail. He's reasonably sure that the object is another piece of a meteorite that was found in a nearby field in Arlington in 1894 the two rocks have similar shapes and nickel content. But to tell for sure, a larger chunk of the object would have to be cut off and examined.

The meteorite offers some tantalizing scientific possibilities, Alexander said. For one thing, he'd like to compare the weathering and rusting on the surface of this rock to the 1984 meteorite, which was buried for about 100 years less time before being found.

The meteorite also appears to belong to a rare class of non-magnetic meteorites that originated in melt pools on asteroids created by impacts of other rocks. Additionally, its flattened shape is rare, as most meteorites are roughly spherical.

"Both of those factors mean that it's potentially very scientifically interesting," Alexander said.

The Lilienthals, meanwhile, have a newfound interest in the rocks that turn up in their fields. If their meteorite is related to the 1894 find, it stands to reason there could be more fragments of the sameout there.

"It's very possible there's some in there still underground, still in the field," Bruce Lilienthal said. At the very least, it's made their annual rock-picking-up duty a little bit more exciting, he said.
