Yesterday, especially at night, it rained a lot around the area I live in. I usually leave the office late, and I was unlucky yesterday...

Actually, I don't really hate rain. I like it better when it is really hard. Isn't it kind of exciting? I love playing soccer in rain, on a slippy and tricky ground (^^)

However, I don't like driving in rain... Well, few people like that, I guess...

Yesterday, I drove more carefully than I do on fine days. Even though I was caraful, it was still dangerous. The heavy rain beat on the windshield, and some big trucks splashed on it...

"Wow, this is like 'Splash Mountain' in Disney Land!!"

No way...

After I managed to get through 'Splash Mountain', I was almost home. Then I saw a puddle in front of my car. That was a road I usually drive on, so I wasn't really worried. I kept going...and...

"Bang!!!"

"??? What the heck was that!?"

I knew it was a quite narrow road, but it was too rainy and too dark to find where I was going.

Well...I got off the road, and one wheel fell in a hall beside the road...

"Hey, don't make me surprised."

I somehow kept driving...without knowing what would happen later...

"Ah? I can't drive straight. What's happening? Oh, I know the road isn't flat, and it is raining. That's why this is happening. Haha."

I kept on...

"Wait a miniute. I'm driving now on a nice and wide road, right? I can't still drive straight... Well...I can hear some noise..."

That's when I found that I had a flat tire...

"Oh...gosh..."

僕が住んでいるあたりの地域では、昨日、特に夜に大雨になりました。普段も仕事場から帰るのは遅めなんですが、昨日はついてなかったです…

本当のところ、雨が嫌いってわけではないんです。大雨のときはまたいいんですよね。心なしかドキドキしませんか？雨の中、滑りやすく、ぐちゃぐちゃのグランドでのサッカーはいいですねぇ。

でも、雨の中の運転は好きではありません。まぁ、好きな人もそういないでしょうけど…

昨日は晴れの日よりも注意をして運転しました。どんなに注意をして運転しても、危険なものは危険なんです。豪雨がフロントガラスにあたったり、大きなトラックが水しぶきを上げたり…

「いぇい！ディズニーランドのスプラッシュマウンテンみたい～！」

とんでもない…

スプラッシュマウンテンを越えて、僕はうちの近くまで来ていました。そこで、行く先に水溜りがあるのが見えました。いつも通っている道だったので、特に心配することもなく進みました。そのとき…

「ドスッ！」

「うわっ？何だ今の？」

細い道であることは知っていましたが、昨日は大雨で暗い中だったので、進む先も見えないような状態でした。

あ、道から外れてタイヤが道の脇にある穴に落ちてしまいました…

「ちょっと、驚かすなよぉ。」

僕は何とか運転を続けました…その後何が起こるのかも知らずに…

「あれ？まっすぐ走れないですけど…どうしたんだ？そうか、もともと平らな道じゃないし、雨も降ってるからね。だからこんななんだ。あはは。」

運転続行…

「ちょっと待てよ。今は広くてきれいな道を通ってるはずだよね？まだまっすぐ走れないですけど…なんか嫌な音も聞こえるし…」

タイヤがパンクしているのを発見したのはその時でした…

「なんてこった…」

I am now preparing for the resumption of my page, and it might take a little while till then.

Before that, I would like to write about a couple of things.

It has been ages since my last post... Well, it has been 2 years and 5 months actually. Wow, what have I been doing?? Umm...I can't tell you here what exactly happened during the time I was away. It will be a too long story for sure...and it was just the past...

Anyway, I am back!!

First of all, I have to apologize to the people who have visited my page for my absence without any announcement. Some of them might have been waiting for my next post, and I might have disappointed those people...

To tell you the truth, I didn't feel that guilty when I stopped writing because I thought, at the time,

"Well, few people visit my page. Even though I stop writing now, no one is going to care about it."

I was too selfish, I know... If there were any visitors at the time, it is too late to say sorry to them since they won't come back here. I know that, but I dare say so wishing I could tell them how I feel now...

ただいま、ブログの再開に向けて準備をしていますが、少々それまで時間がかかるかもしれません…

本格的再開の前に、いくつか書いていこうかなぁと思います。

最後に記事を書いてから相当時間がたってしまいました。そうですね、実際２年５ヶ月ほどになります。何をやってたんだか…うぅん…ここで実際ブログを放置してしまっていた間に何があったのかは、ちょっとお伝えできないんです。長くなるのは確実ですし、過去のことなので…

ともあれ、帰ってまいりました！

まずは、この期間に僕のページを覗きに来てくれた皆さんに、何の連絡もせずに放置してしまったことを謝らなければいけません。次の記事を楽しみに待っていた方がいるかもしれませんし、その方々をがっかりさせてしまったかもしれません…

正直に言うと、記事を書くのをやめたときはそれほど罪悪感は感じていませんでした。というのも、当時僕は、

「ここに来る人はそういないだろうし、たとえ今書くのをやめたとしても誰も気にしないだろうな。」

と、思ってましたから。

自分勝手ですよね…もし、当時に遊びに来てくれていた人がいたとしても、謝るには遅すぎます。だってもうその方々にはきっとここには来てもらえないでしょうから…わかってはいるんですが、ここであえて謝らせてください。今僕の思いがその方々に伝わればいいのですが…

「ごめんなさい…」

I started to go to a cram school, of course, to learn English when I was 10 years old. Actually, I had been going to a swimming school by then. I'm not really sure why I decided to leave the swimming school. I liked swimming and enjoyed it, but I guess I was just getting bored of going to the swimming pool...Anyway, I decided to start to learn English.

What I learned first there was the alphabets. I hadn't written English by the time though I had listened to it and tried to sing in English, so that was totally a new experience for me, and new things were (and are still) always exciting for me!

At the same time that I learned how to write block letters of the alphabets, I learned how to write script of them. My teacher had us write them as first as possible. We had a race in the class, and it was a little challenging for me, but I didn't give up. I wrote them over and over again. Finally, I won one of the races, and I got a pencil!! It was just one pencil. However, I was full of satisfaction of my accomplishment.

"Yes! I got a pencil!!"

　　１０歳になったときに塾に通い始めました。もちろん英語を習う為です。実はそれまで水泳教室に通っていたのです。なぜその水泳教室を辞めたのかはっきり覚えていません。水泳は好きでしたし、楽しんでいました。思うに、単にプールに行くのに飽きてきてたんでしょうね。ともあれ、英語を習いに行く事に決めました。

　　まずそこで習ったのはアルファベットでした。それまで、英語を聞いたり英語で歌を歌ったりはしていましたが、書いたことはありませんでした。なので、英語を書くということは私にとって全く新しいものでした。そして、新しいことにはいつもわくわくしていました（今でもそうです）。

　　ブロック体のアルファベットを習うのと同時に、筆記体のほうも習いました。先生は教室の生徒達に筆記体を出来るだけ早く書くようにさせました。そのクラスでレースがあったのです。それは私にとってちょっと大変でしたね。ただ、諦めはしませんでした。何度も何度も書く練習をしました。そしてついにレースで勝つことができ、賞品の鉛筆１本を手に入れました！鉛筆一本です。しかし、私は達成したことの満足感でいっぱいでした。

「やった！鉛筆もらいっ！」

Having found a great help, which was the song book, I got more excited to sing the song "BAD".

At first, I didn't even know which part Michael was singing even though I played the tape looking at the song book. I just couldn't follow it. As some of you know, he puts some other words or sounds between words in lyrics...and that made it difficult to follow the song... However, that was not the only reason...

As I kept listening, I reached one part, and it was a main chorus, which went like this (as long as I remember...),

"Because I'm bad. I'm bad. You know it..."

I found or felt that something was wrong...

Yes, what he was saying sounded different from the Katakana given above the English words!! I was kind of shocked and disappointed because I believed that the song book would be a perfect help for me to sing that...

It was found out that the book wasn't a good support, but I didn't give up! My stubbornness didn't allow me to do so!!

I kept listening over and over again, trusting not the book, not the Katakana but my ears. Then, I was finally able to sing "BAD"!! Well, I don't think it was perfect, but I, at least, want to believe that I sang like he did.

I guess this is one of the reasons that I have always been careful about the sounds or rhythms of English.

By the way...

"Sing Like Talking"

Have you ever heard this name? This is a name of some Japanese music band. I like this because it gives me ideas of music when I compose, play, sing and listen to it.

Then, here's one of my ideas of English.

"Talk like singing"

　　歌の本という素晴らしい助けを見つけ、「BAD」を歌いたい気持ちはさらに盛り上がってきました。

　　初めは本を見ながらテープを聴いていたのにもかかわらず、マイケルがどこを歌っているのかさえわかりませんでした。単純についていけていなかったのです。わかる人もいると思いますが、彼は言葉の間に歌詞にはない言葉や音を入れるんですよね。それが、歌についていくのを困難にしていました。ただこれだけが原因ではなかったのです。

　　ずっと聞いていると、あるパートにたどり着きました。それはサビの部分でこんな感じでした（覚えている範囲でですが…）。

"Because I'm bad. I'm bad. You know it..."

　　私は何かがおかしいということに気づきました。

　　そうです。マイケルの歌っている歌詞とカタカナの振り仮名の音が違ったのです。その本がこの歌を歌うのに大きな助けになるであろうと信じていたこともあり、私はショックを受けがっかりしてしまいました。

　　この歌の本が使えないということがわかったのですが、この歌を歌うことをあきらめませんでした。自分の中の負けず嫌いな部分がそうはさせてくれませんでした。

　　本、カタカナには頼らず、自分の耳を信じながら何度も聞きなおしました。そして、ついに「BAD」を歌うことができたのです。まぁ、完璧とはいえなかったでしょうが…でも、少なくとも自分では彼のように歌っていたと思いたいです。

　　この経験が今でも英語の音やリズムに注意を払っている理由の一つだと思います。

ところで…

　　「Sing Like Talking」

この名前を聞いたことはありますか？これは、日本のある音楽グループの名前です。この名前は自分が音楽を作ったり、演奏したり、聞いたりするときに、音楽というものの考え方を教えてくれるのでとても好きなのです。

　　ここで、私の英語に対しての考えの中から一つ…

　　「Talk Like Singing」

One day, I happened to listened to one song by Michael Jackson. It was "BAD", and I guess I watched him sing in some music TV program or something. It was really impressive, neeedless to say, musically, but also interesting phonetically.

"I really want to sing that!!"

I had the song recorded on a cassette tape and kept playing it so many times, but it was never easy for me to catch all the words and copy them because the song was all written English, of course. I almost gave up...

In the meantime, I found the lyrics in a song book which my father would often buy. That book included not only Japanese songs but also some English ones, and the English lyrics had "Katakana" above the words to help Japanese people read them easily.

"How nice! Now I can sing that with this book!!

　　小学生の頃に英語同様、音楽にも興味を持ち始めました。

　　ある日マイケル・ジャクソンの"BAD"という歌を聞きました。きっとテレビの音楽番組かなにかで彼が歌っているのを見たのだと思います。それは音楽的にはもちろん印象的だったのですが、音声的にも興味を引くものでした。

　　「この歌、歌えるようになりたい！」

カセットにこの歌を録音してもらい、それを何度も聴きました。しかし、もちろん歌詞は英語で書かれたものだったので、全ての言葉を捉え、それを繰り返すなど到底できるものではありませんでした。そして、この歌を歌うことをほぼ諦めていました。

　　そんな中、父親が良く買っていた歌の本の中に"BAD"の歌詞が載っているのを見つけました。この本には日本の曲だけでなく、英語の曲も何曲か掲載されていました。そして、英語の歌詞には日本人が歌い易いようにと、カタカナで読み方が書いてありました。

　　「コレはいい！コレなら歌えるよっ！」

As I mentioned before, I am still surprized or can hardly believe that I didn't get bored with English. I remember I listened to the same tape and opened the same book at least twice or three times a week.

Then, I wonder what the little boy, who had almost no knowledge of English, really was enjoying at the time...The pictures? The stories? The sound? What was it?

While I was wondering, I came up with one idea...

"I must have been enjoying something new!!"

It is true that I listened to the same stories, but I guess I learned (or at least found) new words or phrases every time, and it was very exciting for me. The discoveries must have stimulated my curious and inquring mind.

And still now, they do...

　　僕はいつも同じ話を聞いていました。もちろん、他のものにも挑戦してみましたが、どうも好きになれませんでした。もしかしたら、それらが難しいと感じたのかもしれませんし、ただ何となく楽しめなかったのかもしれません。理由が何であれ、当時の僕にどれが簡単で、どれが難しいと判断できる英語力があったようには思えませんが…

　　以前お話したように、当時ずっと英語に飽きずにいられたことがいまだに驚きですし、信じられません。思えば、少なくとも週に２、３回は同じ本を開き、同じ話を聞いていました。

　　では、当時英語の知識などほとんど無かった僕は何を楽しんでいたのでしょう？絵？話？音？何だったのでしょう？

　　そんなことを考えていた時に一つのアイディア浮かんできました。

　　「きっと新しいものの発見を楽しんでいたに違いない！」

　　確かに毎回のように同じ話を聞いていたのですが、その繰り返しの中で新しい単語や新しいフレーズを覚えて（少なくとも出会って）いき、それがとても面白かったのではないかなぁと思うのです。発見が僕の好奇心、探究心を刺激したのでしょう。

　　そして、今でも新しい発見は僕のそんな心を刺激続けています
