The Nodegraph consists of a number of manually placed Nodes and a number of automatically generated Links between the Nodes. Each individual Node represents a precise position on the map that NPCs can move to. The Nodegraph Links are generated during Compiling, but can be adjusted using the Link Control entities. TIP: when distributing .ain files for a Source game or mod on Steam, you'll get the error 'nodegraph out of date, rebuilding .' for every user, this happens because the .ain file last modified date is older than the .bsp. You can simply work around this by adding ai_norebuildgraph 1 into the autoexec.cfg. IMPORTANT! Keep in mind that any changes to the .bsp will no longer automatically update the .ain, you will have to manually copy over the .ain's from your work version to the Steam build.

Compiling

Nodegraphs are automatically compiled into AIN files when a map loads, unless there is an existing AIN with the correct checksum. During the build process Source's AI system draws straight lines between all nodes less than 720 units apart and calculates which NPC Hull types can travel down each path, if any. Dynamic objects like physics props and doors are ignored during this process. The AIN output is then stored in <game>mapsgraphs.

There can be two nodegraphs in each map (although both are compiled to the same AIN): one for Flying NPCs ('air'), and one for walking, driving, or otherwise land-locked NPCs. An NPC could switch between the two, but there is currently no known example of such behaviour. (crows?)

Node placement

The goal of a nodegraph is to record pathways, and the pattern of your node placement should reflect this. It should be possible to travel anywhere across your map by tracing a straight line from one node to another. 370 baler manual. Generally, this means placing a node on each corner of an obstacle. The more detailed an area, the more nodes will be required for NPCs to properly navigate. If you do not provide enough, NPCs will not make use of tactical opportunities, and may even have trouble simply walking around. Provide no nodes at all and NPCs will be practically stranded, unable to do anything more complex than static actions like shooting and acting.

However, this is not to say you should blast your map into oblivion with an avalanche of nodes. Low-detail areas can be beneficial sometimes, as areas through which you want NPCs to travel but not get bogged down. If you are building a beach assault for example, you will probably want to keep the beach relatively sparse of nodes to ensure that the attacking NPCs keep moving until they reach cover (even if you did add nodes, there would probably be few landmarks for the AI to make use of).

The destination should have a dense nodegraph however, to ensure that the NPCs do not all arrive at the same point and trip each other over.

The actual density with which to place the nodes is up to you. You can use the image to the right as a guide to the numbers you should be aiming for. Note how the graph is quite sparse on the building roof to the extreme right, but much denser down on the ground, where the player will be.

map_edit

Main article: map_edit

Placing nodes in Hammer can become very tedious. To speed the process up, you can use map_edit to place nodes from a first-person perspective at run-time. You can also perform advanced tasks such as manually removing node links. map_edit places nodes ten units above the ground, resolving displacement difficulties automatically.

Hint nodes

Main article: Hint nodes

Hint nodes are navigation nodes with meaning, presenting NPCs with information about the area in which they are located. Their application is very important for a successful nodegraph.

• Hints nodes will add to the nodegraph like a normal node.
• NPCs will be able to use a hint as a normal navigation node, even if they can't use it as a hint.
• Hint nodes can currently only be used as hints at, to, or from the precise location of the entity.

There are several key hints that you should know about when constructing your nodegraph:

Entrance / Exit Pinch

Forces NPCs to file through one at a time and prevents congestion. You should place one of these anywhere that a wider area narrows into a smaller one, particularly doorways. Narrow corridors should have a hint of this type at both ends. You may want to place the node slightly before or after the pinch, if there are problems with its links or with NPCs reaching it. It is quite possible to have two hints of this type adjacent to each other if there is enough room.

Crouch Cover Low

Crouch Cover Medium

These two hints tell NPCs that a node is safe to take cover at. While the safety of a node could be calculated off the cuff, placing this hint makes its location more obvious to the AI and lowers processing overhead. NPCs won't use the hint if it can be seen by a hostile.

Override jump permission

NPCs that generally do not jump (e.g. npc_citizen, npc_alyx) can have their behaviour overridden by this hint. NPCs that jump as a part of their basic AI (e.g. Antlion, Fast Zombie) do not need these hints. A start and end jump permission hint are required, and NPCs will not attempt jumps that they cannot make or that would hurt them.

Debugging the graph

Main article: ai_show_connect

Once you have created your graph, making sure it works is the next task. Most of the work is done with the ai_show_connect console command. Its workings are already covered in its just-linked article, and will not be repeated here. The important thing to look for is a green connection of the relevant NPC Hull type. The hull is the bounding box of the NPC, and there are quite a few types. The default is HUMAN_HULL, which applies to all humanoid NPCs. There are various other hull types that you need to get used to as you work out what works for what NPCs - see the NPC Hull for reference.

If there is no link between two mission-critical nodes, or if there is a link that does not fit the NPC hull you need, the next job is to rearrange the nodes in question so that there is. You must consider:

Is the path between the nodes straight?

A node's job is to define straight paths. NPCs then take that information and turn it into curved paths through triangulation if needed.

Create a new node between the non-linking two if you need to round a corner.

Is the path between the nodes big enough for the NPC hull on all axes?

Don't forget the ceiling height! This is especially important for air nodes.

If a node is too near to a wall, links to it will be invalidated, even if the NPC could just stop a little short.

Keep in mind that the path must be big enough in a straight line. There can't be anything poking into the projected hull at any point. Use the maroon line, if there is one, as a guide.

If you have a hull problem at a corner, or the start or end of a corridor, try moving the node out into the open a little. It probably won't make too much difference and will save having to make a second node.

Link control

The info_node_link is a VERY valuable entity. It 'forces' a connection between two nodes.

For example, if you are building an elevator and an NPC needs to come along for the ride, it is sometimes difficult to get the info_nodes to work properly since the elevator is a brush-based entity and not a world brush. This can cause a myriad of problems and the NPC will not want to get on the elevator, even if you have a scripted_sequence on it. However, by using an info_node_link you can solve this problem.

Simply place an info_node on the ground and another right above the elevator platform. Now make an info_node_link close to those nodes. Check the properties of the info_nodes and get their NodeIDs. Now go back into the properties of the info_node_link and put the target NodeIDs in the starting and ending node sections. That's all there is to it. You will now have two connected nodes that can be enabled/disabled on command.

Suggested node patterns

Some locations require careful node management. The Valve Developer Community's recommendations for these situations follow:

Optimal node pattern for doors

Main movement targets

Guarantee a nodegraph link by presenting a straight line through the doorframe.

Placed slightly ahead to decrease the likelihood of NPCs stopping too close to the door and causing congestion.

Flank nodes

Create alternate exit points, and are a solid choice for FIND_COVER routines.

Entrance / Exit Pinch

info_node_hint of type Entrance / Exit Pinch.

Ensures that NPCs travelling through the doorway do so one at a time.

Limitation: NPCs that are not using the node (i.e. are not travelling through the door) may still choose to stand on it! This is a bug that should be fixed.

Usage by NPCs

When an NPC attempts to build a route, it accesses the nodegraph to follow these steps:

• Find the nearest node to the NPC's current position.
• Find the nearest node to the NPC's desired movement point.
• Ensure the two points are connected, and find the best path between them.
• Use moveprobes to ensure that the NPC can reach the nearest node.
• Use moveprobes to ensure that the NPC can reach the desired movement point from the nearest node to it.

Though pretty much all macOS and Linux machines come with Tk installed already, it's often anolder version (typically 8.4.x or an early 8.5). You want to make sure you've got at least version 8.5 (or possibly 8.6) to use the new widget set, so if that's not already there, you'll want to install the newer version.

Though there are lots of ways to install Tk, the easiest is to download and install one of the versions provided by ActiveState (www.activestate.com).

Download and install Tcl with ActiveTcl, the precompiled, supported Tcl distribution. ActiveTcl Community Edition is free to use in development. The trusted Tcl distribution for Windows, Linux and Mac, pre-bundled with top Tcl/Tk modules – free for development use. Do you use Python. Tkinter (Tk) is a Python default GUI and comes with the Python installation on Linux, Mac, and Windows. Since Tk comes with most Python installations, you don’t generally need to install it yourself. Since Python 2 and Python 3 vary so much, this wikiHow will show you how to install Tkinter with Python 3 on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS. Installers are available for the latest Python 3 and Python 2 releases that will work on all Macs that run Mac OS X 10.5 and later. Python releases include IDLE, Python's built-in interactive development environment. If you download and install Python from the release page, you may also need to download and install a newer version of Tcl/Tk for.

However, the default Mac Python installation may not include the correct version of Tcl/Tk to use Tkinter. Also, the Mac OS typically includes Python 2, whereas this course is oriented around.

Users of recent Python versions can avoid this intermediate step, as starting with Python 3.7, the binary installers available at python.org now include everything you need to use Tk out of the box.If you're using an earlier Python version, or want to compile it yourself, you'll need to install Tcl/Tk on yoursystem to do so. In this case, ActiveState's distribution would be the recommended way to go.

Note that this book assumes you're using Python 3, and not Python 2. There are some significant differences between the two, including module naming, which is the first thing you'll encounter when trying Tkinter.

ActiveState is a company that sells professional developer tools for dynamic languages. They also provide(for free) quality-controlled distributions of some of these languages, and happen to employa number of core developers of these languages.

Installing Tk on macOS

On macOS, the easiest way to get Tk is to install the 'ActiveTcl' distribution from ActiveState, which includes Tcl, Tk, plus a number of other extension libraries.

In your web browser, go to www.activestate.com, and followalong the links to download the Community Edition of ActiveTcl, available as a universal binary.Make sure you're downloading an 8.6.x version, not an older version.

Run the installer to get everything loaded onto your machine.When you're done, you'll find a shiny new application called 'Wish 8.6' inside the Utilitiesfolder of your Applications folder. This is the 'wish' shell, an application that includesboth Tcl and Tk.

If you launch that application, you'll see two windows popup (see below), one titled 'Wish' which willcontain your application, and the second titled 'Console' which is where you can type inTcl/Tk commands.

For convenient use from the Unix command line, you'll also find a script installed as/usr/local/bin/wish8.5 which will launch the same application.

To verify the exact version of Tcl/Tk that you are running, from the Wish console type the following:

While previous versions of macOS included both Ruby and Tk (albeit older 8.4 versions),since Snow Leopard this has no longer been the case.

RubyTk is a binding that links against an existing but separate Tk library. So, to get the latest version of Tk for Ruby, we're going to have to do two things, first download thelatest 8.6.x Tcl/Tk version from ActiveState, and then compile (or re-compile) Ruby to use it.

Install ActiveTcl

The 'ActiveTcl' distribution from ActiveState contains the latest Tk, as well as the latestversion of Tcl (which Ruby's Tk bindings use internally to talk to Tk). In your web browser, go to www.activestate.com, and follow along the links to download the Community Edition of ActiveTcl, available as a universal binary. Again, makesure you're downloading an 8.6.x version.

Run the installer and everything will be loaded onto your machine.

Compile Ruby

Make sure you've got Apple's developer tools (i.e. Xcode, which includes gcc and friends).Then if you haven't already got it, go to www.ruby-lang.orgto download the latest stable (currently 2.6.x) version of Ruby.

Unpack it, and then from the Unix command line, run (note that the 'configure' command should allbe entered on one line, the <install-dir> should be replaced with the location you'd likeyour version of Ruby installed:

To verify that everything worked, start up your newly compiled copy of 'irb', and type:

The first line should load RubyTk; typically if there was a problem with compiling itwould show up here. The second line will return the version of Tk that you're running,which should be something like '8.5.18'.

For modern Tk programming using Perl, the 'Tkx' module is highly recommended, and we'llbe using that here. The easiest way to get set up is to use the 'ActivePerl' distribution from www.activestate.com.

Install ActivePerl >= 5.10

The 'ActivePerl' distribution from ActiveState includes not only Perl, but also recent versions ofTk and Tcl (which Tkx uses internally to talk to Tk). In your web browser, go to www.activestate.com, and follow along the links to download the Community Edition of ActivePerl, available as a universal binary.

Run the installer and everything will be loaded onto your machine. Note that ActivePerl will be installedin /usr/local/ActivePerl-5.x (where 'x' is the actual version, e.g. '14').

To find out what version of Tk Perl and Tkx are using, run this from the Unix command line:

Versions of ActivePerl prior to 5.10 (and some of the first 5.10 builds) included earlier versions of Tcl/Tk (8.4.x rather than 8.5.x). We therefore very highly recommend upgrading to at least ActivePerl 5.10,and verify that you do have Tk 8.5 or newer.

Verified install using ActivePerl 5.14.2 on Mac OS X 10.7.2.

As noted, the easiest way to get Tk and Tkinter installed on your system is using Python's binary installer,available at python.org. Thanks to work by Python core developer Ned Deily, binaryinstallers starting with version 3.7 include Tcl and Tk.

Remember, we're using Python 3.x here, not 2.x. As of this writing, the latest 3.7 installer (3.7.3) includes Tk 8.6.8.

If, however, you're compiling Python yourself, you'll have more work to do. Read on.

Installing Tcl/Tk and Compiling Python

Tkinter is included with core Python of course, but you'll need a version of Tcl/Tk on your system to compile it against. Do yourself a huge favourand get the most recent version.

Whatever you do, do not rely on the Tk versions included in macOS! Older versions included Tk 8.4.x. Even more recent macOS versions include an early 8.5 version (8.5.9, released in 2010), which has several serious bugs that are easily triggered by Tkinter.

While there are several different ways to get Tcl and Tk onto your machine, the easiest and most recommended is to use the ActiveTcl distribution.

In your web browser, visit www.activestate.com/products/activetcl.Download ActiveTcl (as of this writing it's labelled version 8.6.8, though is actually 8.6.9). Make sure to download an 8.6.x version, not something older!Note that you will need to create an account with ActiveState (no cost) to download this distribution. After it's downloaded, run the installer to get Tcl and Tk loaded onto your machine.

When compiling Python from source, you need to tell it where to find the ActiveTcl (or other) distribution. Otherwise, it won't find any Tcl/Tk distribution (so Tkinter won't work),or it will find the (ancient and broken) version of Tcl/Tk that is supplied with macOS.

When doing the initial './configure,' in the Python build process, you will need to add two new options, specifying the paths (one for Tcl, one for Tk; note the location of the single quotes in the example below) to the include files, and also the locations of the Tcl and Tk libraries. For example:

The initial '%' is the Unix shell prompt, you don't have to type it. The rest of it should all go on one line, without adding line breaks.

When everything is built, be sure to test it out. Start Python from your terminal, e.g.

This should give you the Python command prompt. From the prompt, enter these two commands:

RubyTk is the binding for Tk. Installing it on your Windows machine used to be pure hell, involving installinga separate version of Tcl/Tk, downloading a development environment like Visual Studio, downloading the Rubysource code, carefully compiling Ruby, .

Luckily, it is (since July 2011) now remarkably easy, because the good RubyInstaller forWindows people now include Tk 8.5 as part of their excellent and easy to use installer. Thanks very much!

So all you'll need to do is download and run RubyInstaller, making sure to checkthe option in the installer to include Tcl/Tk support. This will install everything into the directory you choose,e.g. 'C:Ruby192'.

To verify the version of Tk, start up your newly installed copy of 'irb' (which would have beeninstalled in e.g. 'C:Ruby192bin'), and type:

The 'ActiveTcl' distribution from ActiveState contains the latest Tk, as well as the latestversion of Tcl (which Ruby's Tk bindings use internally to talk to Tk). In your web browser, go to www.activestate.com, and follow along the links to download the Community Edition of ActiveTcl for Linux. Again, makesure you're downloading an 8.5.x version, not an older 8.4.x version.

Unpack it, and run the installer (install.sh), and follow along. You'll end up with a fresh installof ActiveTcl, located in /opt/ActiveTcl-8.5.

Setup your Development Environment

You'll need to make sure you have a fairly robust development environment on your machine. Besidesthe usual gcc and friends, make sure that you've got the X11 development files (e.g. all the include files;on Ubuntu there were included in the 'libx11-dev' package).

Really, you need the X11 development files to compile, even though ActiveTcl is prebuilt and so doesn't needthem. I wasted hours on this playing with various options, because the error messages if the headers aren'tthere are either missing or misleading.

Compile Ruby

Next, go to www.ruby-lang.orgto download the latest stable (currently 1.9.x) version of Ruby.

Unpack it, and then from the Unix command line, run (note that the <install-dir> should be replaced with the location you'd likeyour version of Ruby installed):

Tkinter (and, since Python 3.1, ttk) is included in the Python standard library. It relies on Tcl/Tk being installed onyour system. Depending on how you install Python, this may not happen automatically.

You have several different options to get Python and Tkinter onto your machine. We'll show you two, using your distro's package manager, or compiling from source.

Option 1. Your Linux Distribution's Package Manager

Currently supported Linux distributions will usually already include a recent version of Python 3.x (or have a .deb, .rpm, etc. packageavailable to install). If so, this is usually the easiest way to go.

You may find that when you try to 'import tkinter' that you get an error. Sometimes it will tell you that you need to install another package. If so, follow the instructions, and try again. It may also just give you Python's standard error message: ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'tkinter'.

If you're getting an error saying 'No module named tkinter' (without the single quotes around the module name), you're probably using Python 2. This tutorial assumes Python 3.

For example, running Ubuntu 19.04, Python 3.7.3 is already installed. However, you also need to install a separate package,python3-tk, to use Tkinter, e.g.

In this case, that package provides Tcl/Tk 8.6.9 libraries to be used with Python.

Option 2. Install Tcl/Tk and Compile the Standard Python Distribution

If you'd like to use the standard source distribution from python.org, you can certainly do that.

But to do so, you'll need to get the Tcl and Tk include files and libraries loaded on your machine first.While there are again several ways to do that, the easiest is to download and install ActiveTcl.

In your web browser, go to www.activestate.com/products/activetcl.Download the latest version of ActiveTcl for Linux. Make sure you're downloading an 8.6 or newer version. Note that you will need to create an account with ActiveState (no cost) to download this distribution. After it's downloaded, unpack it, run the installer (sudo ./install.sh), and follow along. You'll end up with a fresh installof ActiveTcl, located in e.g. /opt/ActiveTcl-8.6.

Next, download the current Python 3.x source distribution from python.org, and unpack it.On your configure line, you'll need to tell it how to find the version of Tcl/Tk you installed. Then build as usual:

Make sure to verify your install (see below).

Didn't work? There may have been an error compiling Python's tkinter code. To check, from the main Pythonsource directory, try 'touch Modules/_tkinter.c' (note the underscore) and then 'make' to recompile it.Watch closely for error messages.
The most common thing is that the way you specified the Tcl/Tk include and librariesneeds to be changed somehow. Or if you get messages that certain include files can't be found (e.g. 'X11/Xlib.h') youmay need to install additional packages on your Linux distribution (e.g. 'apt-get install libx11-dev'). Onceyou get it to compile without errors, don't forget to 'make install'.

Verifying your Install

At the Python command prompt, enter these two commands:

If it gives you an error when you try to 'import tkinter' (e.g. 'If this fails your Python may not be configured for Tk'), something hasn't been set up right. If you compiled Python yourself, see above to check for compile errors.

The Obligatory First Program

To make sure that everything actually did work, let's try to run a 'Hello World'program in Tk. While for something this short you could just type it in directlyto the interpreter, instead use your favorite text editor to put it in a file.

Save this to a file named 'hello.tcl'. From the wish shell, type:

As of this writing, macOS ships with Python 2 and Tcl/Tk 8.5 built in. However, Python 2 is scheduled to be deprecated in 2020, and the code in this book will not work with it, so macOS users will need to install Python 3 to follow this book.

Let's perform the following steps to install Python3 on macOS:

1. Go to http://www.python.org/downloads/mac-osx/.
2. Select the latest Python 3 release. At the time of writing, the latest version is 3.6.4, but 3.7 should be out by publication time.
3. Under the Files section, select and download macOS 64-bit/32-bit installer.
4. Launch the .pkg file that you've downloaded and follow the steps of the install wizard, selecting defaults.

Python for Mac OS X

Python comes pre-installed on Mac OS X so it is easy to startusing. However, to take advantage of the latest versions ofPython, you will need to download and install newer versionsalongside the system ones. The easiest way to do that is toinstall one of the binary installers for OS X from thePython Download page. Installers areavailable for the latest Python 3 and Python 2 releases thatwill work on all Macs that run Mac OS X 10.5 and later.

Python releases include IDLE, Python's built-in interactivedevelopment environment. If you download and install Pythonfrom the release page, you may also need to download and installa newer version of Tcl/Tk for OS X. See theIDLE and Tkinter on OS X page formore information.

You can run a Python interpreter by double-clicking onApplications / Utilities / Terminal and typing python3 (if you'veinstalled a version of Python 3) or python (to use Python 2) inthe window that opens up. You can also launch IDLE for the Pythonversion you have installed by double-clicking its icon inthe appropriate Python version folder in the Applications folderor you can also just type idle3 or idle in a terminal window.

There are many thousands of additional Python software packagesavailable through PyPI, the PythonPackage Index. We recommend you use thepip tool to simplifyinstalling and managing additional packages. pip is includedwith Python 3.4 releases; for earlier releases, follow the pipinstall instructions.

Among the packages available through PyPI are some that arespecifically for OS X environments. Among these are:

1.Open the Color Magic and check the ‘Manual’ check box.
Then press the ‘Select Package’ button and select the hair package file.
If you’ve downloaded my hair files, open the file named “RecolorMe-****.package”.
I’ll explain the following steps using my “RecolorMe”file.
Press the ‘Next’.

3.Open the S4PE,and open the file you saved in previous step.
Select the hair texture.
Right click on it,you can export the texture as DDS file.
