Childbirth

I was present at a childbirth. It was very emotional, and I was almost crying when the lady was trying to deliver her baby. The couple looked so happy when she was delivering her baby and after the birth. I didn't know that now doctors don't suction the mouth and nose of a newborn baby. When I was present at a childbirth before, about 10 years ago, all newborn babies were suctioned immediately after they were delivered from their mothers.

Sports medicine(Dr. Jim Chesnutt)

Today was the last day of following Dr. Jim Chesnutt. He saw the patients experiencing many pains and provided injections to diminish them. I hope I'll be able to manage as many pains as he did after I go back to Japan.

Enterprise day1

Today, I set the GPS to the name of the city and started on my way. The route consisted of backroads, so sometimes I lost my way, but finally, I reached the clinic! I was very relieved and tired.

Enterprise

Every time I go to an unknown place, something happens. When I went rafting, I lost my way in a deserted area, and when I went to Kansas, I had to sleep in an airport because of the bad weather, and when I drove to a bank, I lost my way again, and it took 45 minutes even though it should only take 10. And, this was the third time I became lost. Today, I was supposed to reach a clinic in Enterprise in the afternoon and meet Dr. Powers, but I lost my way, and finally, I couldn't go there.

I couldn't set a GPS, because it didn't find the clinic name. So, I had to read a map and remember the number of the road. "I drive Road 84, and if I see Road 82, then go to Road 82…I get it!" I turned to Road 82 successfully, but little by little, I started to become worried because I couldn't find the name that I saw in driving on the map. I stopped my car twice and confirmed the way. But, I was not sure whether the road was correct or not. I thought the reason why I couldn't find the name was that Road 82 was a countryside road, and the names I saw during my drive were too subtle to put on the map, so I continued to drive. I reached a place named Yakima. I felt tired because I drove for 7 hours. I was convinced that I drove the wrong way. I brought the map out of my car and asked the store clerk where I was. Then I knew that I was in Washington state, and it would take more than 4 hours to drive to my destination. I consulted with Ms. Naruse, and I decided to go back to the point that I got wrong and stay at a hotel around there. I was very tired...

A crawfish festival

I went to a crawfish festival. There were so many people there, and I saw a long line of people waiting to buy crawfish food. I tried two crawfish dishes for the first time. One was boiled crawfish. I got rid of the shell, and a few times the sharp shell stung my finger. The taste was very salty. The other dish was crawfish cocktail. It tasted raw and had a fishy smell. I thought that was why they used so much salt. The salt had the effect of deodorizing that smell. I thought it wasn't rare to eat crawfish in America, but now I know that was wrong.

Portland has many festivals, so every weekend, if I have time, I search the internet and find festivals. The festivals themselves were very fun, but I came here alone, so every time, I went to a festival alone. I don't like to go out alone, especially for going sightseeing or to a festival. Because, even if I feel happy or I'm impressed by something, I can't share the feeling. But now, a medical student came here and not alone. I was very happy to go to a festival with her.I felt like it was more fun than if I would have gone alone.

cervical cytology

There were two cases of the test of cervical cytology. She was a supervisor of the test. The resident proceeded with the test while discussing it with her. In Japan, the test is done by an OB/GYN. But here, it is done by the doctor in FM,and a resident must experience this procedure. I thought the procedure itself was not so difficult. Of course, where is the proper place to get this simple procedure is the biggest problem, so I had to discuss it with my supervisor. But, I thought we could provide the procedure as long as we had learned how to do it. Eventually, the problem is the patient who doesn't want to have it done by doctors who are not OB/GYNs.

Skype Lesson

After I had decided to practice medicine in Portland, I started to practice English conversation by Skype and talk to a Filipino. A Skype lesson is very suitable for me because even if I have little time to study English and am very late to finish my work, I can take a lesson easily. I can spare my time to Skype because unlike going to an English school, I don't have to travel to and from the school. I can also spare the money, especially since the English lessons provided by the Filipino via Skype are much cheaper than that of English
natives.

The cost depends on the company. For example, if the teachers are intelligent and sophisticated, the cost may be two times higher than the other schools, but I think it remains reasonable because even so, the cost is still much cheaper than that of native English speakers. The cost of the Filipino school ranges from under 100 yen to 300 yen per 25 minutes. If I take a native's lesson, the cost may be over 1500 yen per 25 minutes. Amazingly, it's a private lesson, which I think is good for practicing English conversation,
especially for person who is at the middle level like me.

I couldn't imagine getting the private lesson at such a cheap price several years ago. I think we can get English lessons much easier and at a more reasonable price than previously. It was fun for me to speak with foreigners, so it was natural that I took my time to learn English conversation. I had no time to review or study ahead of time, but it was a good opportunity to speak to foreign people. Some care about the Filipinos' pronunciation, but I don't care since I think the lesson is for the conversation, and I'm satisfied with getting the opportunity to converse with them.

Back from Rafting

I went back home from Maupin with Mr. Kishi. He said that he wanted to go to “Saturday Market” at downtown, so I got him there on my way home. At first, I was going to go there after I parked my car at my parking lot. But, after I reached home, I didn’t feel like anything. After all, I slept for the rest of the day.

Rafting

Today, about 30 people came to our hotel, and we became a big group. Rafting started at 10:00am. We drove a car toward upstream. The river was rough here and there. We each rode on a boat. I rode with Ben's son and his friends. The stream was rough in some parts. Sometimes, one of us dropped into the water, but every time, we managed to recover. Suddenly, I heard a scream. A rafting boat turned upside down! The whole crew was thrown into the river! Fortunately, our boat was down the stream from the overturned boat, so we could pull the crew up to our boat. One of them was in a panic, because she couldn't swim. It must be a very scary thing to have happen to you.I heard the cause of the boat overturning later. The crew couldn't avoid a big rock in front of them, and the boat was hit at the right side, and the next moment, a big wave came at the boat from the left side, and eventually, the boat was overturned. After all of the crew were pulled up, we screamed out of joy and relief. When we reached our hotel, we stopped the boat and had lunch. And, we started again. Before we reached the goal, we sometimes stopped the boat and walked to a place where we could enjoy a natural water slide or went in the river to enjoy floating in the flowing water in our life jackets. I took in a lot of water, but it was fun! The night sky was also amazing. I had never seen a sky so full of stars. It was an unforgettable day in my life.

Go to Maupin

Today, I went to a rafting spot. I had planned for it to take about 2.5 hours from my apartment by car. I didn't think it would be so tough, because I had an excellent GPS. The GPS really worked well, but 10 minutes before I reached there, I lost my way. Maybe, I missed the turning point. The GPS tried to find a different way, and I was taken to a narrow path that was unpaved. I expected that the rafting spot was in a rural area, so I believed it might be the correct way. The GPS said, "Go straight 1.5km and turn right," so I drove that way. But, I was gradually worried because the path turned narrower and sometimes
some deer went across it. But still, I believed that I would drive on a paved road again in the near future. But finally, the path became covered with dry grass, and the GPS suddenly stopped directing the way. It was a desolate field around me, and I could see some mountains in the distance. I called a few members, but nobody answered the phone. I was at a loss about what to do next. I checked the gas gauge and thought, once it gets dark, who will be able to find me? I had to decide to go on or go back. I chose the way back. Fortunately, it was the correct decision, and at last, I reached the destination safely! It was a precious experience, but I never want to have go through that again.
