Others seek to know the connection between an occasion and how it can be used to market a brand as well as making the most of the strategy to achieve brand marketing objectives.<br>Occasion-based marketing refers to taking advantage of events, occasions and holidays to market a brand to a target market to increase sales of the brand on the basis of its accessory nature to the celebration or recognition of the event. For example, a confectioner may use the Valentine’s Day to target lovers with marketing messages for one, some or all of its chocolate brands. The main advantage of the strategy is that it boosts response rate as the target would be most receptive owing to the occasion-driven need. This is because people are more likely to buy brands which help them to express themselves to other members of society on specific occasions in weeks or days leading to the occasion.<br><strong><br>Choosing the occasions</strong><br>The key to choosing the right occasions is answering the 5 W and an H. That is What, Who, Where, When, Which, Why and How. For instance, a Lobel’s Biscuits sales manager may choose to target lovers destined for picnic outings on Valentine’s Day for an occasion-based sales campaign. So the What: Valentine’s Day, Who: lovers, Where: Cities’ recreational parks, When: 14 February, Which (brand): Lobel’s Choice Assorted Biscuits, Why: it is a dry food brand which lovers would want to snack on and How: Through point of sale material in supermarkets and at park kiosk fronts in the run up to the event.<br>There are a number of broad categories of occasions which lend themselves to increasing sales if properly leveraged. The main types of the occasions include the following:</p><p><strong>News</strong><br>Current affairs provide events that may be sudden in frequency but useful in building up sales. For example a short term insurance brand marketer can take advantage of the news of a hailstorm which causes extensive damage to farmers’ crop to sell cropping insurance policies to farmers as a way if mitigating the risk. The currency and urgency of the risk which is amplified by television news video footage and print media images of the damaged crops coupled with the estimated value of lost crops can be used to press home the fact that farmers badly need to insure their crops, which makes the sales easier.<br><strong><br>Events </strong><br>These include non-holiday events such as weddings or engagements. Brands that help people to express their feeling such as love to other people such as engagement or wedding rings easily lend themselves to such events. This is the reason why De Beers’ payoff line, “Diamonds are forever” resonates with wedding partners because it speaks quality and long life which in wedding language means “until death do us part” and in folklore it implies that, “they lived happily ever after”. Even global events such as the FIFA World Cup games are used by some marketers in non-participating countries to tap into the human love for football to roll out sales promotions which include guessing winners of specific games to win prizes.</p><p><strong>Holidays</strong><br>Holidays also present an opportunity for occasion-based marketing. The Christmas holiday, for example, is associated with gift-giving and this means that using customer insights a marketer can come up with a sales promotion to drive brands that are commonly used as gifts. OK Zimbabwe has perfected this strategy. For this reason Schweppes Zimbabwe’s Facebook page cover image comprises a family enjoying the cordial brand with a fitting caption: “A refreshing taste for every occasion.”<br><strong>Making the most of occasion-based marketing</strong><br>Occasion-based marketing can be a very effective sales strategy if it is leveraged well. Some of the considerations to mind in this regard include the following:</p><p>• <strong>Relevance</strong><br>Occasion-based marketing should not just be rolled out because a major event is imminent. The marketer should be satisfied that the occasion is relevant to his brand and industry. If it does not fit the event, it is advisable to drop it instead of forcing a square brand into a round event. Choosing relevant occasions improves the marketers’ chances of meeting their sales objectives.</p><p>• <strong>Emotional connection</strong><br>The occasion-based marketing strategy is likely to succeed if it is based on existing sound relationship with brand consumers. Where the marketer is in constant engagement with his or her customers, for example, using social media platforms such as Facebook or Twitter it is easier for them to connect and respond to the occasion-based marketing messages.</p><p>• <strong>Creativity </strong><br>Carrying out occasion-based marketing initiatives in the same way that every marketer is going about it in one’s industry is unlikely to turn any heads or loosen any purses strings on the market.
