A resident of the central city of Homs told NHK over the phone that attacks stopped on Thursday morning, but tanks and snipers are still being deployed, so people are staying indoors.

Homs had been under a series of intense attacks by government forces.

A resident in Daraa, southern Syria, said shelling had stopped and the city was quiet from the morning on.

The government of President Bashar al-Assad said in a letter to the UN and Arab League envoy, Kofi Annan, that troops will halt military operations across the country by Thursday. In the letter, the government also argues that it has the right to counter attacks by anti-government groups.

Assad's government is apparently keeping the troops in the cities and is ready to resume its offensive anytime.

Syrian watchers say it is unclear whether the ceasefire will last.

British Prime Minister David Cameron is to be the first European leader to visit Myanmar since the country established a civilian government.

The National League for Democracy, Myanmar's opposition party, says Cameron will arrive in the country on Friday. The party says he is to meet its leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who was elected to parliament for the first time in a by-election this month.

Cameron is expected to hold his first talks with Myanmar President Thein Sein in the country's capital Naypyidaw.

European countries are moving to lift economic sanctions against Myanmar following its April 1st parliamentary by-elections, in which the party won 43 of 45 seats up for election.
The sanctions are expected to be on the agenda during Cameron's visit.

今回は、多少待っても行くのだ！と意気揚揚と

案の定、日曜１時半の時点で６組待ち
席が空いたら、知らせてくれるとのことで名前と連絡先を伝え、表参道をぶらぶら。
２０分ほど待ってりんりん～
やっと入れました。

お店でしか食べられない、パフェを！と思ったのですが、ケーキのショーケースを見たら
そちらへフォーリンラブしてしまい、
結局、看板メニューのモンテビアンコ（モンブラン）とサバラン、そしてキッシュを
いただきました。もちろん一人でこの量ではありません。

モンブラン好きの私は、かなり注目しておりましたこのお店。
モンテビアンコは渋皮の栗を使っていて、おとなの味。お色味は、チョコレートでも入っているのか、というほどのこい茶色ですが、カカオもチョコも使っていないとのこと。自然な栗のお味を楽しめました

そして、サバラン！
これ！かなりいいよ！！サバランはババ・オ・ラムとも言いますが、ラムの量が多すぎたり、甘すぎたり、
生地がばさばさしていたり。。。とシンプルなスイーツだけれどもその塩梅がとっても難しいと思っています。何件か食べて歩いていましたが、本場ローマで食べた味を記憶している身としては、どれもいまいち・・・。

し・か・し！こちらのサバラン（ババ・オ・ラム）はかなりレベル高い！
甘さもちょうどいいし、クリームもしつこくない、あと生地（デニッシュ）のしっとり感もこりゃまた絶妙
欲を言えば、もう少しラムが強くてもよかったかな。

最後に、キッシュ。
こちらは厚みがあり、卵もふわふわで美味しかった。
あれだけの厚みのあるキッシュ、私も作りたいな。
生クリームと卵をカクハンしているのでしょうか。

お店の対応は、食べ物とドリンクのサーブのタイミングがバラバラでいまいちでした。
人気点だし、忙しいのはわかるけども。残念でした。
お味は最高だったので、今度はランチ食べてみたいな。

Leading Chinese dissident Fang Lizhi has died in exile in the United States. He was 76.

His friend and fellow US-based dissident Wang Dan wrote on the Internet that Fang died in Arizona on Friday.

Fang was an astrophysicist who inspired China's pro-democracy student protests in the 1980s. He was compared with the Soviet-era physicist and leading dissident Andrei Sakharov.

Fang was the vice president of the University of Science and Technology when Chinese authorities alleged his speeches to students incited unrest and fired him in 1987. He was then expelled from the Communist Party.

But he remained active in seeking the release of political prisoners.

Fang became an ideological leader of student pro-democracy protests, which led to the Tiananmen Square incident in Beijing in 1989.

Soon after the crackdown at Tiananmen Square, he fled to the US Embassy in Beijing and spent one year there before being allowed to leave the country.

In exile, he was a physics professor at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Fang kept active in the pro-democracy movement, expressing criticism of China's one-party rule through speeches and the Internet.

「ラーイジングサァーン」のEXILEではありません。決して。　この単語だけで、“亡命者”という意味もあります。

dissident　民主運動家
オリジナルの意味は、“反体制の”という意味がありますが、この場合はdemocratic leaderの話ですから、”民主運動家”とするのが良いでしょう。

alleged
根拠無しに物事を断言する、決定を下すさいに使う動詞です。オリジナルの意味は”断言する”ですが、そのまま「～断言した」とするとカッコ悪いので、この文の意味合いでは「～理由で～された」程度でよいのではないでしょうか。

incited 煽動する
”引用する”と間違えることが多いですが、誘発するとか、そういう意味ですね。triggerになるということです。

unrest 民主化運動
こちらも意訳になりますね。オリジナルは”不安”とか”暴力行為＝violence”という意味ですが、文の流れからして”民主化運動”が適切でしょう。英語は繰り返し同じ表現を使用するのを避ける傾向にありますから、このようにunrestやdissidentという単語を使って"democratic"とわざわざ言わないようにしているのだと思います。

Japan's Defense Ministry has deployed Self-Defense Forces personnel in Okinawa and on other southwestern islands ahead of North Korea's announced rocket launch.

The deployment is primarily aimed at preparing for debris falling from the rocket into Japanese territory.

But the move is also seen as part of the ministry's attempt to strengthen the region's defense capabilities as decided in a defense guideline issued in fiscal 2011.

In view of China's military buildup, the ministry plans to station about 100 coastal monitoring troops on the island of Yonaguni in Okinawa Prefecture, and several hundred troops on Ishigaki or Miyako, islands southwest of Okinawa.

But some Okinawa residents strongly oppose the stationing, as the prefecture suffered huge civilian casualties in World War Two ground battles.

The government appears to be trying to ease such opposition by showing that the deployment is aimed at protecting residents from the rocket.

　北朝鮮からのロケット発射によって生じるdebrisのことです。

4.　casualties 被害者、死傷者
　 dead peopleやinjured peopleと同意義です。victimsと表現してもいいですね。
