How did the collaboration with EB come together?

About a year ago, The Hollywood Reporter 25 Power Stylists Issue came out and I noticed i was literally the only stylist on the list who didn't mention some kind of collaboration. Everyone was doing lines for either Target or Kmart or QVC or something. All women's lines. And i thought, Well I should do a men's collab! So I went to see my agents and told them I wanted to do a line with a big American sportswear line with history and heritage, that could use a more modern, more style conscious update to help introduce it to a new generation.

I made a list of lines and Eddie Bauer was the first on the list. I love their history they patented the very first down jacket. They dressed the first man to climb Mount Everest. And the story of Eddie himself and his wife was also really fascinating to me. So it seemed like a good fit. I presented them with a book of how I wanted the line to look, what I wanted the store displays to look like, the lookbook to look like, everything. Real top to bottom. After a couple of meetings they went for it and here we are. I wanted them to understand that I wasn't trying to completely reinvent the wheel of what Eddie Bauer represents. Just to introduce a more tailored, modern fit, with a lot of attention to detail. But still classic.

What did you and Eddie Bauer think was missing from the marketplace? With that in mind, what did you set about to create?

I think more than what's missing from the marketplace, it was about reintroducing Eddie Bauer to a more style conscious generation. But still keeping the clothes accessible to the original Eddie Bauer client. I didn't want to go super fashion forward. I wanted cool, rugged, very wearable clothes. Stuff my own clients would wear. I definitely kept my clients in mind the entire time we were designing the collection. I kept saying, would Bradley wear this? Would James? Would Armie? Cause they all three have different styles but I wanted it to work on many different types of dudes.

When we were shooting the lookbook photos, every guy from the model to the prop guy was asking where they could order pieces. That was the what we were going for. And I like that it's affordable. I can place it on a client and my friends can actually go out and buy it for themselves. Which doesn't happen often. Usually, my friends will see a photo I styled on my Instagram, and they'll be like where can i get that? But its like Gucci or Tom Ford.

I got to actually dig through the EB archives not a lot of people get to do. I had to wear white gloves. I found a lot of inspiration for the line from there the thermal with the hunting stitch, and the original Eddie Bauer skyline bomber jacket (which is the quilted one). We actually went for a very autumnal color palette: maroon, hunter green, navy and sort of a dusty blue. And that sort of gold/tan color which is very old construction wear inspired. Then we sprinkled in the really bright blue for one of the parkas and the field jacket. The field jacket is my favorite piece in the collection. That bright blue honestly looks good on every single guy who puts it on. Guys wear a lot of neutral colors so its fun to throw on a pop of rich bright color. And if you notice with my clients, I am always very drawn to shades of blue.

As a stylist, I work with unique colors so much. I will always opt for a hunter green, royal blue, or maroon suit over a grey, navy or black. I wanted to apply that same concept to these clothes, and that's how I picked the color palette. I find that men will wear color if it's done in a masculine way. I was designing these clothes for the same customer that used to shop in my store Confederacy. The kinds of guys that would buy Band of Outsiders, Gant Rugger, Shipley Halmos, and Rag Bone as opposed to say, James Perse or Varvatos.
