Johann Jakob Hottinger (18 May 1783, in Z?rich - 17 May 1860, in Z?rich) was a Swiss historian. He was a great-grandson of philologist Johann Heinrich Hottinger (1620-1667). He studied theology at the Carolinum in Z?rich, receiving his ordination in 1804. Afterwards, he taught classes in an upper T?chterschule and at an art school in Z?rich. In 1833 he became an associate professor, then from 1844 to 1859, was a full professor of history at the University of Z?rich. Following the death of Robert Glutz-Blotzheim, he continued the work on Johannes von M?ller's multi-volume Geschichten schweizerischer Eidgenossenschaft ("History of the Swiss Confederation").

Elihu Burritt was an American diplomat, philanthropist and social activist, born December 8, 1810, in New Britain, Connecticut. He was a descendant of William and Elizabeth Burritt from Stratford, Connecticut. He first worked as a blacksmith. As an adult he was active as a lecturer in many causes, opposing slavery, working for temperance, and trying to achieve world peace. He was a prolific lecturer, journalist and writer, who traveled widely in the US and Europe.

Lieutenant General Watkin Tench (6 October 1758 - 7 May 1833) was a British marine officer who is best known for publishing two books describing his experiences in the First Fleet, which established the first settlement in Australia in 1788. His two accounts, Narrative of the Expedition to Botany Bay and Complete Account of the Settlement at Port Jackson provide an account of the arrival and first four years of the colony. Tench joined His Majesty's Marine Forces, Plymouth division, as a second lieutenant on 25 January 1776, aged 17. He was promoted to first lieutenant on 25 January 1778 at the age of 19 years and 3 months.

Soldier, explorer of the American West, professor at Illinois Wesleyan University, and director of major scientific and cultural institutions. He is famous for the 1869 Powell Geographic Expedition, a three-month river trip down the Green and Colorado rivers, including the first official U. S. government-sponsored passage through the Grand Canyon. Powell served as second director of the U. S. Geological Survey (1881-1894) and proposed, for development of the arid West, policies that were prescient for his accurate evaluation of conditions. He became the first director of the Bureau of Ethnology at the Smithsonian Institution during his service as director of the U. S. Geological Survey, where he supported linguistic and sociological research and publications.
