Soon Facebook May Have Waze (of Knowing

Facebook's willing to pay somewhere between $800 million and $1 billion for Waze, an Israeli mapping start-up, likely because of the location based ads it could bake into its app. That's a pretty hefty () price-tag for a start-up. But a crowd-sourced GPS service makes a lot of sense for Facebook, mostly because the location data will give Facebook one more point of reference for targeting its increasingly invasive advertisements.

RELATED:

Facebook makes pretty much all of its money off advertising . The strategy Facebook has been following is the more information it can offer brands about its users the more valuable their advertising. Facebook has already been , and adding your exact whereabouts could help the social network offer the . With Waze's GPS data, if you're near that CVS where you bought some deodorant about six months ago——Facebook could serve you an ad for Arm & Hammer while you're in the neighborhood.

RELATED:

In Facebook's theory, this will make the network's ads more useful. Rather than see a sponsored story for something we don't need at a time when we have zero intention of buying, this alerts our consumerist senses at the "right" moment. To others, however, this might come off as creepy or invasive.

RELATED:

Waze, a "community based" traffic and navigation app that uses real-time data from users to give the best directions, already has a big, rapidly growing user-base. It has more than doubled in size since last July, now reporting to TechCrunch's Ingrid Lunden that it has 47 million users. The app works a lot like a Garmin on your phone, giving travelers turn-by-turn directions. The innovation is how it gets that data: Rather than use satellite information from navigation companies like TomTom, it relies on its users for intel on traffic, construction, and road reports. Just by driving with the app turned on, people contribute to the maps. But, people can also actively report accidents, hazards, police and other road happenings. The flow of information also works the other way, with the app sending road alerts as a person drives.

RELATED:

This move also fits handily into the network's plans to get smartphone users using its products. It has either amassed or built all the important software parts and apps to do that—besides a maps app. People spend about 31 percent of their time on smartphones deciphering their whereabouts, . And, as we've seen with the whole Google and Apple Maps fiasco, people develop deep loyalties to their mapping apps. Rather than building its own copy-cat app, Facebook could just scoop up all the Waze users and brand them Facebook maps users.

http://vickeyamq.jimdo.com/2013/05/11/cheese-selecting-tasting-serving-the-world-s-finest-e-book/
http://shastauaa.skyrock.com/3161305510-The-Corruption-Episode-12-Earth-Moon-Colony-One-SCI-FI-SOAP.html
http://gloriaklso.soup.io/post/312540833/Downloads-Living-with-Defined-Contribution-Pensions-Pension
http://twitpic.com/cpqhiz
http://amyzid.skyrock.com/3161305556-Leukocyte-Emigration-and-Its-Sequelae-Satellite-Symposium-of-the-6th.html
http://en.netlog.com/leonidasunderman/blog/blogid=23336103
http://cathymu.orbs.com/
http://twitpic.com/cpqhmw
http://en.netlog.com/jakeherrick/blog/blogid=23336126
http://yphmrbio.altervista.org/biography-clark-colin-macarthur-1932-2002-an-article-from-contemporary-authors-ebook/
http://wileyvfnu.skyrock.com/3161305692-Download-Wild-Orchids-of-the-Southeastern-United-States-North-of.html
http://douglasmdkzti.webs.com/apps/blog/show/26282829
http://patriceaab.soup.io/post/312540860/Downloads-Multiplying-Menace-The-Revenge-Of-Rumpelstiltskin
http://silviaibap.jimdo.com/2013/05/11/breakfast-with-god-vol-1-book/
http://povuyaws.judblog.com/The-first-blog-b1/Archaeologies-of-the-Contemporary-Past-book-b1-p54.htm
http://vondayiip.skyrock.com/3161305704-Download-Suzuki-Duets-for-Violins-book.html
http://twitpic.com/cpqhvc
http://yckecouee.altervista.org/chinese-flash-cards-for-hsk-level-1-150-chinese-vocabulary-words-with-pinyin-for-the-new-hsk-download/
http://aprilvkbc.jimdo.com/2013/05/11/download-summer-course-schedule-an-article-from-modern-casting-jul-25-2005-book/

Tiny Baby Dinosaur Discovered in China

Scientists have discovered the fossilized skeleton of a baby dinosaur representing a new species of coelurosaur, a group of theropods that includes ancient beasts like T. rex.

With a skull that's barely taller than the diameter of a quarter, the remains are thought to have belonged to athat was less than a year old when it died, and researchers think it measured just 3 feet (1 meter) long and weighed only 3 lbs. (1.3 kilogram).

But the baby may have grown into a bruiser in adulthood, possibly comparable to the 16-foot-long (5 meters) Monolophosaurus, a theropod dinosaur with a long bony crest on its head, or the 25-foot-long (7.6 m) Sinraptor, which means "Chinese plunderer." What's more, it was likely a meat-eater that stalked lizards and relatives of today's mammals and crocodilians, researchers say. []

Named Aorun zhaoi after a character in the Chinese epic tale "Journey to the West," this dinosaur lived more than 161 million years ago, when the Late Jurassic Period was just getting underway, according to scientists at George Washington University who made the discovery in northwestern China.

James Clark, a GW biologist, and a team that included his then doctoral student Jonah Choiniere made the find in 2006 at the Shishugou Formation in a remote part of Xinjiang. Aorun is the fourth coelurosaur found in this formation, which has yielded a remarkable diversity of theropods, a group of mostly carnivorous dinosaurs that walked on two legs.

The beasts preserved in the Shishugou deposits date back to a period straddling the Middle and Late , a time when dinosaurs had just begun to reach enormous sizes and dominate ecosystems on land, notes.

"All that was exposed on the surface was a bit of the leg," Clark said in a statement. "We were pleasantly surprised to find a skull buried in the rock too."

A closer look at the fossils showed that the bones had not fully developed.

"We were able to look at microscopic details of Aorun's bones and they showed that the animal was less than a year old when it died on the banks of a stream," said Choiniere.

Choiniere is now a senior researcher at the Evolutionary Studies Institute at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. In addition to being a GW doctoral student at the time of the discovery, Choiniere was also a Kalbfleisch Fellow and Gerstner Scholar at the American Museum of Natural History.

The research was detailed May 3 in the .

Follow Megan Gannon on and Follow us , & .
Book Talk: Tragedy prompted author to wr

By Elaine Lies

TOKYO (Reuters) - Elise is a single mother whose only child is killed in a sudden freak accident. Distraught, she at first wants to join her son - but then realizes she must stay alive to care for his beloved cat, which gradually draws her back into life.

"The Cat", by award-winning Israeli-born author Edeet Ravel, got its start from the July 2011 news that a gunman had opened fire at a youth camp on a Norwegian holiday island, killing 77 people, setting off a compulsion that had her writing so rapidly she completed a draft of the book in six weeks.

Ravel spoke with Reuters about her writing, loss and why she chose a cat to help her heroine back to life.

Q: What got this book started?

A: I began writing the book on July 23, 2011, a day that I remember very well because it was the day after the horrific attack in Norway. I read about the terrible tragedy and I thought of the parents. Many writers try to understand these horrific events by writing about the event itself - the violence, the perpetrators, the victims - but I turned my attention to the bereaved parents, and friends and relatives, because their lives can never be the same, and I began writing "The Cat".

With this novel, even though it was extremely hard to write - in fact, it was the hardest thing I've ever done in my writing career - I had at the same time a compulsion to tell Elise's story. That was really unlike anything I'd ever experienced before. I simply couldn't stop writing. I'd go to bed scratching sentences in the dark as I fell asleep. I woke up with sentences ready to go and I'd have to rush to the computer to get it all down before doing anything else. I had to leave my exercise class to scribble sentences in the margin of the schedule. Like the time that I left a bar mitzvah in the middle and I went to the ladies' room and I began scribbling on the bar mitzvah program. It was going on constantly for about six weeks, until the first draft was finished.

Q: Why was there such a compulsion?

A: I think it was something that had been on my mind for a very long time because I was close to two people who lost children, and because as a parent, like all parents, I live daily with my inability to protect my child from harm, try as I may. So it's a very emotional topic and probably because it was so difficult to write I pushed it away and tried not to write it. I think there was a build-up. There will always be things we can't control with our children, and yet the loss of a child is unimaginable - except that a parent lives with that possibility every minute of every day, from the minute our child is born.

Q: What was your relationship with Elise through this intense process?

A: Elise took over the novel. I always have an entire world set up in my mind before I begin writing, but even more so in this case. It can take years but in the case of "The Cat", it was almost instantaneous. I knew who Elise was, I knew where she lived, I knew her story and her son's story, where she came from and what she felt about everything. So I would say that this was a case where the story led the way and I followed.

Q: She came into your head fully developed?

A: Yes. It must have happened overnight because I read about the events and I went to sleep. I think I was thinking about what had happened all night. When I woke up, I just wrote on my computer screen "The Cat".

Q: When you were living so closely and intensely with that world, was that hard for you?

A: Yes. During the time that I was writing, I can't remember what else I was doing. The novel took over my life and I was writing every free minute that I had, and it was very emotional. It was difficult. I was extremely involved in the story and I felt that I was not inventing events. In one sense I was creating a fictional world, but in another sense I was writing about something so real that happens, sadly, to so many people.

Q: Why a cat, why not a dog?

A: I think that she would not have forgotten, even for a few minutes, that she had a dog to take care of. When she comes home from the hospital, she actually has forgotten that there's a cat in the house. Of course, cats can hide away in a corner and be very quiet and unnoticeable, they can blend in.

That beloved creature is the key to her survival, and the cat represents both the spiritual dimension that keeps her alive but also, I think, a more primal energy or instinct that gives us the energy to go on after a loss like that... I was thinking in terms of both that instinct and the spiritual dimension.

Q: Cats give you more space in general.

A: Yes. A dog can actually communicate more directly. Many dogs have that ability to communicate with humans, but with the cat there's more guesswork involved ... (It's) a mirror of her isolation, the mystery and the inability to understand what has happened to her.

(Reporting by Elaine Lies, editing by Paul Casciato)

http://erikarboio.webs.com/apps/blog/show/25978893
http://boemnab.info/1/books/British%20Bus%20Systems:%20South%20Wales%20Transport%20No%2011%20%28British%20bus%2c%20tram%20%26%20trolleybus%20systems%29
http://friendfeed.com/oyqaynt/a3f631ba/organophosphates-and-health-read-online
http://clydeipb.guildomatic.com/news/show/1524767
http://verliepmm.jigsy.com/entries/general/the-village-can-t-do-it-because-the-village-does-not-exist-in-america-book-downloads
http://en.netlog.com/blythewinton/blog/blogid=22448512
http://cpreoli.altervista.org/a-horses-tale-ten-adventures-in-100-years-book/
http://en.netlog.com/eileenyon/blog/blogid=22448534
http://twitpic.com/cme4iw
http://katieradyvm.inube.com/blog/3302063/the-magician-s-nephew-radio-theatre-chronicles-of-narnia-e-book/
http://rzaqquaeq.altervista.org/download-our-washington-book/
http://silvanaouyd.guildomatic.com/news/show/1524774
http://nathanialstdo.skyrock.com/3158493068-27-Views-of-Hillsborough-A-Southern-Town-in-Poetry-and-Prose-e-book.html
http://asavqi.guildomatic.com/news/show/1524775
http://nathanialstdo.skyrock.com/3158493066-The-Toombs-Oak-the-Tree-That-Owned-Itself-and-Other-Chapters-of.html
http://en.netlog.com/willieshouse/blog/blogid=22448566

Thousands of leftists protest Hollande's

PARIS (AP) Tens of thousands of supporters of leftist parties marched through central Paris on Sunday to express disappointment with President Francois Hollande's first year in power, criticizing the leader for reneging on his promises to rein in the world of finance and enact economic stimulus.

Hollande, a Socialist, rose to the presidency last May, promising to spare France the austerity measures imposed elsewhere in Europe. And the French government has largely avoided the deep spending cuts, big tax hikes and the wide-ranging reforms of many of its neighbors.

Instead, it has nibbled around the edges of its deficit, cutting 10 billion euros ($13 billion) in spending and increasing taxes, largely on the rich, by 20 billion euros. That's relatively little for a country with 2 trillion euro economy of which 57 percent is government spending.

Still, France's economy has continued to deteriorate, with growth stagnating and unemployment rising above 10 percent.

Leftists who took the streets on Sunday largely from parties to the left of Hollande's mainstream Socialist Party rejected the notion that Hollande had spared France a worse fate.

"Salaries are frozen. They continue to reduce hiring in the public sector," said Brigitte Blang, a 64-year-old teacher from eastern France. "We're waiting for true leftist policies. There's money in the coffers!"

Blang was among tens of thousands of people from around the country who gathered around Paris' iconic Place de la Bastille, named for the prison stormed by French revolutionaries in 1789. They carried signs that said, "Down with austerity," ''Out with finance, humans first" and "OUSTerity finance should pay."

Paris police said 30,000 people showed up, although protest organizers said there were 180,000. After speeches, the crowd marched to another Paris square.

Several protesters acknowledged that they voted for Hollande a year ago either simply to ensure the incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy's defeat or because they had hope for his leadership.

Hollande's failure to keep the support of those on the far left protesting in Paris on Sunday while also angering the right who think his economic reforms and budget cuts haven't gone far enough has made him one the least popular presidents in modern French history. In a sign of how he is being squeezed from both sides, police said 15,000 people largely right-leaning gathered in another part of Paris on Sunday to protest the recent passage of a law legalizing gay marriage.

Hollande and his ministers have pleaded for more time to allow their policies to take hold.

On the one hand, France's reluctance to enact major budget cuts may seem prescient to some as many economists and politicians in Europe rethink the austerity programs demanded in exchange for bailouts. The effects of budget cuts and tax increases have been much more detrimental to growth than some expected, and the prolonged recession and high unemployment in many countries has begun to make those policies untenable.

But others note that France hasn't just shied away from budget cuts, it has also skimped on reforms. While Spain and Italy may be struggling more than France currently, both countries are also laying the groundwork for a strong, durable recovery, many economists say.

France, on the other hand, may be left behind when the rebound comes since it has only partially committed to labor market reforms. Many of its companies are still not competitive on the world stage, its government spending is still too high and Hollande's administration has only exacerbated the impression that France is a difficult place to do business. One of his ministers has had very public spats with Goodyear, ArcelorMittal and Yahoo in the past year.

Hollande has been trying to turn that reputation around, recently unveiling a raft of tax cuts for entrepreneurs. But that announcement is a good example of the bind he finds himself in: Those very tax cuts were held up as a call to arms for Sunday's protest. And many deplored what they see as a stranglehold on power exercised by big companies and banks.

"Our march ...is a protest against the coup d'etat of the world of finance that is happening throughout Europe," said Jean-Luc Melenchon, the head of a grouping of leftist political parties known as the Left Front.

http://jacquelynayvb.skyrock.com/3158116262-Heidegger-s-Platonism-Continuum-Studies-In-Continental-Philosophy.html
http://purakhur.jimdo.com/2013/04/26/downloads-the-2009-2014-world-outlook-for-regular-and-lowfat-frozen-yogurt/
http://twitpic.com/clziv4
http://yayuberk.facileblog.com/The-first-blog-b1/Download-The-Princess-Diaries-Volume-I-The-Princess-Diaries-e-book-b1-p20.htm
http://friendfeed.com/nleiy/45584974/downloads-conducts-chicago-symphony
http://patsydvc.skyrock.com/3158116260-Western-European-Business-Intelligence-Tools-2005-Vendor-Shares.html
http://twitpic.com/clzivr
http://jerriabey.guildomatic.com/news/show/1494491
http://twitpic.com/clziw8
http://en.netlog.com/miquelatwell/blog/blogid=22304211
http://yaekoneba.jigsy.com/entries/general/how-to-have-fun-without-failing-out-430-tips-from-a-college-professor-e-book
http://kristinaohmc.jimdo.com/2013/04/26/industrial-engineering-concepts-methodologies-tools-and-applications-downloads/
http://friendfeed.com/vbahmp/cfe43f42/downloads-small-town-reality-tales-from-grace
http://friendfeed.com/eiuemdq/92500659/downloads-pojo-unofficial-yu-gi-oh-guide-to
http://friendfeed.com/nbbok/f96ae4ed/download-advanced-polymer-processing
http://dominiqueadyvc.webs.com/apps/blog/show/25930199

Breaking a sports barrier, NBA's Jason C

By Julian Linden

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Veteran basketball player Jason Collins announced on Monday that he was gay, smashing through one of the final frontiers in U.S. sports with a frank personal statement and winning warm praise as a groundbreaker.

Collins, a 12-year player in the National Basketball Association (NBA), became the first active athlete from any of the four major U.S. men's professional sports leagues to come out publicly as gay.

He was quickly enveloped in a wave of support from the White House to tennis player Martina Navratilova, a pioneer for gay athletes in sport.

Collins is not a well-known sports star but is now likely to become famous for his stance. He revealed the secret he had harbored for years in a first-person account published in Sports Illustrated, saying he had gradually become frustrated with having to keep silent on his sexuality.

"I'm a 34-year-old NBA center," his essay began. "I'm black. And I'm gay."

Collins said he had considered coming out years ago but it was the Boston Marathon bombings this month that convinced him not to wait any more for a perfect moment to come out.

"I wish I wasn't the kid in the classroom raising his hand and saying, 'I'm different.' said Collins, who played last season with the Boston Celtics and then the Washington Wizards and is currently a free agent. "If I had my way, someone else would have already done this. Nobody has, which is why I'm raising my hand."

Players, administrators and some politicians applauded him for taking a stance. Some hailed it as a landmark day in American civil rights, perhaps as important as when Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball.

President Barack Obama, a big fan of the NBA who regularly plays pickup basketball with his friends, called Collins to express his support, a White House official said.

"I can certainly tell you that here at the White House we view that as another example of the progress that has been made and the evolution that has been taking place in this country, and commend him for his courage, and support him in his - in this effort and hope that his fans and his team support him going forward," said White House spokesman Jay Carney.

DEBATE OVER GAY RIGHTS

Collins' move came at a time of shifting attitudes toward gay rights in the United States, where polls show public opinion is fast moving toward greater acceptance, although a core of social conservatives oppose such change.

Some in sports declined to join the chorus of voices in support of Collins. Sportswriter Chris Broussard, speaking on ESPN television, grouped homosexual acts with adultery and premarital sex, saying he believed this was "walking in open rebellion to God."

In the coming months, the Supreme Court will rule on whether to strike down parts of a federal law that defines marriage as the union between a man and a woman. In 2011, the military repealed a ban on openly gay soldiers.

"Jason's announcement today is an important moment for professional sports and in the history of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) community," former U.S. president Bill Clinton said in a statement.

NBA commissioner David Stern said he was proud of Collins for taking a brave stance.

"Jason has been a widely respected player and teammate throughout his career and we are proud he has assumed the leadership mantle on this very important issue," Stern said.

In a country where it is no longer news for politicians and entertainers to be openly gay, there had been questions over the lack of an openly gay player in the big four men's professional leagues: the National Basketball Association, the National Football League, the National Hockey League and Major League Baseball.

Sports, which helped play a key role in changing public opinion on racial discrimination, had come to seem out of step with much of the rest of American society.

Collins, who has played with six different teams during his 12 years in the NBA, said he never had any grand plans to be the first openly gay player, but events off the basketball court persuaded him to come out.

He was inspired by last year's gay pride parade in Boston, he said, but delayed making an announcement due to a desire to protect his team, waiting until the end of the regular 2012-2013 season ended. Collins was also prompted by the April 15 Boston Marathon bombings which killed three people and wounded more than 200, he said.

"The recent Boston Marathon bombing reinforced the notion that I shouldn't wait for the circumstances of my coming out to be perfect," he wrote in Sports Illustrated. "Things can change in an instant, so why not live truthfully?

PRAISE FLOODS IN

Kobe Bryant, one of the NBA's greatest players, was fined $100,000 in 2011 for a homophobic slur. On Monday, he was among the first of dozens of active players who took to social media to applaud Collins.

"Proud of @jasoncollins34. Don't suffocate who u r because of the ignorance of others," Bryant tweeted.

Two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Steve Nash tweeted: "The time has come. Maximum respect."

There are openly gay players in many top professional leagues in other countries in the world as well as smaller leagues in North America and individual sports.

Navratilova, the tennis star who also became a champion for gay rights, said Collins would feel like a burden had been lifted from him.

"Hey Jason Collins-you are now an activist!!! And trust me, you will sleep a lot better now - freedom is a sweet feeling indeed!," she tweeted.

Other gay athletes, including former NBA center John Amaechi, had waited until their retirement to divulge their sexuality publicly, but there was a growing sense that times were changing.

Earlier this year, the American soccer player Robbie Rogers outed himself, although he had just retired. And Brittney Griner, one of the country's top women's basketball players, said she too was gay.

But there were still no currently playing, openly gay athletes from the four biggest men's leagues.

The question came into sharp focus this year around the National Football League (NFL), usually viewed as the most macho of America's pro sports.

In the days leading up to this year's Super Bowl in New Orleans in February, San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver told reporters he would not welcome a gay teammate into the locker room.

He later retracted his comments but reports later emerged of NFL teams asking college players about their sexuality at a scouting session in February.

This prompted the New York State attorney general to send a letter to the NFL, urging the league to take action and adopt a formal policy on discrimination over sexual orientation.

High-profile NFL players, most notably Chris Kluwe and Brendon Ayanbadejo, began advocating for gay rights, and suggested there were a handful of players ready to come out once someone had taken the first step.

"All of us have huge admiration for what Jason is doing," said Patrick Burke, co-founder of equal rights advocacy group You Can Play.

"Jason's courage in stepping forward with his personal story will provide athletes and fans with a new role model."

(Editing by Frances Kerry and Tim Dobbyn)

http://nupawale.toxicplace.com/The-first-blog-b1/A-Companion-to-Eighteenth-Century-Poetry-Blackwell-Companions-to-Literature-and-Culture-book-b1-p6.htm
http://georgetteuphl.skyrock.com/3157245524-Download-US-Diabetes-Market-Analysis-ebook.html
http://friendfeed.com/fvbuyr/faf59536/die-letzten-tage-von-peking-german-edition
http://friendfeed.com/psyqii/c7053fed/little-book-of-yorkshire-christmas-download
http://twitpic.com/cl1i8l
http://canimush.toolsblog.net/The-first-blog-b1/Download-The-2006-2011-World-Outlook-for-Stella-Artois-Lager-Beer-Aug-17-2005-b1-p6.htm
http://twitpic.com/cl1i8v
http://en.netlog.com/danutabrinkley/blog/blogid=21960368
http://jeannettayyri.guildomatic.com/news/show/1403841
http://eusebioycoe.skyrock.com/3157245544-Downloads-Fuck-Me-Blonde-A-Gangbang-Story-Gang-Bang-M-F-Erotica.html
http://en.netlog.com/kelsiwoolsey/blog/blogid=21960371
http://angeliatuppbp.webs.com/apps/blog/show/25828203

Cubs unveil $500M Wrigley Field renovati

CHICAGO (AP) The Chicago Cubs and the city have agreed on details of a $500 million facelift for Wrigley Field, including an electronic video screen that is nearly three times as large as the one currently atop the centerfield bleachers of the 99-year-old ballpark.

Under terms of the agreement, the Cubs would also be able to increase the number of night games at Wrigley Field from 30 to 40 or nearly half the games played there each season. They would give Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts the ability to renovate the second-oldest park in the major leagues, boost business and perhaps make baseball's most infamous losers competitive again.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel hailed what the two sides called a "framework" agreement in a joint statement issued Sunday night, noting that it includes no taxpayer funding. That had been one of the original requests of the Ricketts family in a long-running renovation dispute that at times involved everything from cranky ballpark neighbors to ward politics and even the re-election campaign of President Barack Obama.

"This framework allows the Cubs to restore the Friendly Confines (of Wrigley) and pursue their economic goals, while respecting the rights and quality of life of its neighbors," Emanuel said.

Still uncertain was how the agreement will sit with owners of nearby buildings who provide rooftop views of the ball games under an agreement with the Cubs that goes back years. They have threatened to sue if the renovations obstruct their view, which they claim would drive them out of business.

On Monday, a spokesman for the rooftop owners said the group would have a statement later, but in the meantime referred the AP to the group's statement released earlier this month that says: "Any construction that interrupts the rooftop views will effectually drive them out of business and be challenged in a court of law."

The Cubs said the video screen they are proposing to build is 6,000 square feet, and would be built with "minimal impact on rooftops with whom (the) Cubs have an agreement." The current centerfield scoreboard is slightly more than 2,000 square feet; the Cubs also have plans to add a left-field sign of 1,000 square feet.

"Rooftop views are largely preserved," the team said in its announcement. "The Cubs have agreed to install only two signs in the outfield a videoboard in left field and a sign in right field. This is far less than our original desire for seven signs to help offset the cost of ballpark restoration."

The signs offer the team a chance to reach new advertising deals and pay for the overhaul, even if it might change the character of the historic park. The city and club said they hope the agreement would allow the Cubs to obtain necessary city approvals for the work by the end of the current season.

The Ricketts family, which bought the Cubs in 2009 for $845 million, initially sought tax funding for renovation plans. With that out in the new agreement, the owners will seek to open new revenue streams outside the stadium. Under the agreement, the Ricketts family would be allowed to build a 175-room hotel, a plaza, and an office building with retail space and a health club, and provide 1,000 "remote" parking spots that will be free and come with shuttle service.

"We are anxious to work with our community as we seek the approvals required to move the project forward," Ricketts said in the statement.

The site of Babe Ruth's "called shot" home run in the 1932 World Series and more heartbreak than Cubs fans would like to remember, Wrigley Field is younger only than Boston's Fenway Park in the majors. It has long been a treasured showplace for baseball purists night games were only added in 1988 but team officials for years have desperately wanted a true upgrade, saying it costs as much as $15 million a year just to keep up with basic repairs.

The ballpark has also played no small part in the lore of the team, as fans were reminded April 10 when someone delivered a goat's head in a box addressed to Ricketts. Neither the team nor the Chicago Police Department have talked about a possible motive for the strange delivery, but as every fan knows it was in the 1945 World Series when a tavern owner arrived at the park with his pet goat which had a ticket.

According to legend, the owner was told the goat smelled and was denied entry. The angry tavern owner then put the "Curse of the Billy Goat" on the Cubs and the team has not been back to the World Series since. The last World Series championship for the Cubs came in 1908 six years before Wrigley was built.

After failing to reach an agreement when Mayor Richard Daley was in office, the Ricketts family kept talking after Emanuel took office in 2011. But even presidential politics presented an obstacle for the plans at one point.

During the 2012 election, the patriarch of the Ricketts family, which created the TD Ameritrade brokerage firm, was considering a $10 million campaign against Obama that would refer to the racially incendiary sermons delivered by the Rev. Jeremiah Wright at a Chicago church the president once attended. J. Joseph Ricketts dropped the proposal, but the episode brought a huge dose of unwanted bad press and angered Emanuel, Obama's former White House chief of staff.

In recent weeks, fans also had to deal with the unlikely specter of the Cubs leaving Chicago. With the talks bogged down, the mayor of nearby Rosemont piped up, saying the village located near O'Hare International Airport would be willing to let the Cubs have 25 acres free of charge to build a replica of Wrigley Field.

___

Online:

Chicago Cubs: http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/index.jsp?c_id=chc

http://otqetsa.altervista.org/leading-a-learning-organization-the-science-of-working-with-others-book/
http://suzanneeziu.jimdo.com/2013/04/21/download-my-kingdom-for-a-hearse-e-book/
http://halinacipro.webs.com/apps/blog/show/25813811
http://friendfeed.com/petmlcy/cab5466d/downloads-strategic-acceleration-succeed-at
http://marshaqua.jimdo.com/2013/04/21/cadillac-pictures-volume-1-cadillac-photos-download/
http://petronilafbfkeo.webs.com/apps/blog/show/25813812
http://twitpic.com/ckwezs
http://boiaraop.metroblog.com/the_2009_world_market_forecasts_for_imported_motor_vehicles_for_transport_of_goods_and_materials_read_online
http://laticiadmv.soup.io/post/309348933/Download-Auto-and-home-supply-stores-State
http://gayepolk.blogsutil.com/The-first-blog-b1/Everyday-Writing-with-MyWritingLab-Pearson-eText-Student-Access-Code-Card-ebook-b1-p5.htm
http://twitpic.com/ckwf22

Parks Pay Off: Green Cities Boost Happin

Avoid the concrete jungle: A new study finds that people who live in cities with more green space feel better than those surrounded by stone and steel.

In fact, the well-being boost associated with green space is equivalent to one-third the jump inand to one-tenth of the extra life satisfaction derived from being employed versus jobless, according to a study to be published in a forthcoming issue of the journal Psychological Science.

"These kinds of comparisons are important for policymakers when trying to decide how to invest scarce public resources, e.g. for park development or upkeep, and figuring out what 'bang' they'll get for their buck," study researcher Mathew White of the University of Exeter Medical School said in a statement. []

It's no surprise that nicer areas of town might be populated by happier people, but previous studies had never been able to tease out whether the emotionally well-off simply moved to greener spots or whether greenery really boosts well-being. White and his colleagues dug into the question by using long-term, national data collected between 1991 and 2008.

That way, the researchers could compare the life satisfaction of the same people as they moved from more to less verdant areas and vice versa. They also controlled for income, employment, marital status, health, housing time and local area factors, such as crime rates, to ensure as much as possible that the effects were coming from greenery.

The results showed that people's life satisfaction, as assessed by questionnaire, did improve when they moved to greener urban areas and decreased in urban spots where nature was out of site. Greener spaces were also linked with lower mental distress in residents.

The study can't prove conclusively that the green space caused the happiness boost, because it's impossible to control for every variable that might be at play, the researchers wrote. But experimental studies have also found that parks are linked with psychological health. In one study, researchers followed residents of public housing who were randomly assigned to apartments withor with views of barren courtyards. The people living in view of greenery reported less domestic violence and fewer aggressive conflicts. They were also less likely to view their problems as unsolvable.

Another study, published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology in 2010, found that just acould improve self-esteem. Green areas with water were deemed most beneficial.

Greenery may influence physical health as well as psychological. One 2002 study published in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health found that seniors in Japan had lower mortality rates in the five years of the study when they lived in areas surrounded by walkable green space.

Follow Stephanie Pappas on and .
