He had Lou Gehrig's disease, and the governing body of men's tennis said in a statement he died at his home in Sydney.

Drewett was a top-40 singles and top-20 doubles player before he retired in 1990. He was hired in 2006 to lead operations in the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific regions. He led the ATP since January 2012.

International Tennis Federation President Francesco Ricci Bitti called Drewett "a valued friend and colleague."

"We were very happy to support him during his various roles at the ATP, most recently as chairman," he said. "His knowledge, experience and enthusiasm will be a great loss to the whole sport."

Players Rafael Nadal and Mardy Fish were among those expressing condolences.

"A very sad day for the world of sports and tennis in particular," Nadal, an 11-time major champion, wrote on Facebook. "Our president Brad has passed away. Rest in peace."

WTA chairman Stacey Allaster said the prize money increases were "perfect examples of Brad's brilliant strategic management, and another example of how much he cared about our athletes and the sport's long-term growth."

A moment of silence was observed Friday at the draw ceremony for the Madrid Open. The Portugal Open will hold a minute's silence Saturday before the first men's semifinal.

Drewett announced in January he had motor neurone disease or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The disease affects voluntary muscle activity, including speaking, walking, breathing and swallowing. It usually causes progressive disability.

Drewett's speech was noticeably slurred when he attended a news conference on the opening day of the Australian Open to announce a new sponsor. He had planned to step down once a successor was found.

"The tennis world lost a strong leader, true gentleman and a great friend," said David Haggerty, chairman and president of the U.S. Tennis Association.

As a player, he won 181 singles matches and two titles as well as seven doubles titles. In 1975, he captured the Australian Open boys' singles title and a year later made it to the Australian Open singles quarterfinals in his Grand Slam debut. He reached two Australian Open doubles semifinals and the Wimbledon doubles quarterfinals.

Drewett also developed and managed a number of successful businesses in the sport and fitness industry. He had worked as a commentator for two Australian television broadcasters.

He is survived by his wife, Joanne, and children Jack, Ally, Joe and Tom.

The 26-story Art Deco-style skyscraper, known to some as the "Superman building" for its similarity to the Daily Planet headquarters in the old TV show, is losing its sole tenant this month. No one is moving in, and the building, the most distinctive feature on the Providence skyline, will no longer be fully illuminated at night, if at all, its owner says.

It's a blow for the city and the state, which had 9.4 percent unemployment in February and has had one of the worst jobless rates in the nation for years.

Nicolas Retsinas, a senior lecturer in real estate at Harvard Business School, says 111 Westminster, as the building is also known, will be "the ultimate urban pothole."

At 428 feet, or about one-third the height of the Empire State Building, it was the tallest skyscraper in New England when it opened in 1928 as the Industrial National Bank Building. It has housed a bank ever since.

That 85-year run will end when Bank of America ends its lease for the building's entire 380,000 square feet and completes its move into more modern space nearby in the coming days. The bank most recently occupied only about 20 percent of the building, says Bill Fischer, a spokesman for its owner, High Rock Development of Newton, Mass.

High Rock says it does not want to use it as offices. The building represents such a large share of downtown office space, Fischer says, that it would flood the market to do that.

Instead, High Rock wants to turn it into about 290 apartments. But the company has offered no timetable for the project or said how much it might cost. High Rock says it will need to persuade state lawmakers to revive a program that gives tax credits for rehabilitating historic buildings.

Mayor Angel Taveras says he is disappointed the skyscraper will be vacant and he will do what he can to make sure it has a productive use. But he hasn't committed himself to any specific course of action.

In the meantime, the Superman building will stand dark and empty.

That's a mistake, says Retsinas, who lives in Providence. He likens the significance of the building in Providence to the Empire State Building in New York.

"Buildings like that are also advertisements about the city. It's sending a signal to the rest of the city that we're willing to write off this building," he says. Rather than turning off the lights and letting it sit empty, Retsinas suggests a phased transition: keeping the lights on and possibly putting something in on the ground floor.

In Detroit, which is hurting much more than Providence and has many more vacant large buildings, the government has worked to find tenants for some empty properties. For example, the state moved some of its offices into General Motors' old corporate headquarters after GM moved out.

Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee last year suggested the state move employees into the Superman building, but that idea has gone nowhere.

Washington, D.C., has gone further. It taxes vacant and blighted properties at a higher rate, giving property owners a disincentive to sit on an empty building as they wait for a turnaround in the market or try to extract something such as tax breaks.

Rhode Island was once a manufacturing powerhouse and is still covered with old mill buildings, but many are vacant or have been turned into housing or office space. The state has struggled over the past 25 years or so to make the transition to a service and information economy.

The most recent attempt was a $75 million state loan guarantee handed out in 2010 to a video game company started by former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling. The company declared bankruptcy last year, leaving taxpayers on the hook.

Given that debacle, it is unclear whether lawmakers have the appetite to grant what could be tens of millions of dollars in tax credits to get the Superman building back up and running, even given its significance to the state.

Brown University sits atop the city's College Hill and overlooks the skyscraper. Mike McCormack, an architect and assistant vice president for planning at the Ivy League school, says downtown is filled with beautiful, historic buildings, but the city needs to figure out how to "reoccupy" it.

"There needs to be life on the street. People have to walk around and feel like there's energy," he says. "Then it encourages investment, it encourages entrepreneurs."

Zimmermann was terrific in his first career shutout and the Nationals limited the Cincinnati Reds to one hit for the second straight game in a 1-0 victory on Friday night.

Zimmermann (4-1) struck out four and walked one while improving to 3-0 with a 1.36 ERA in five career games against Cincinnati. The right-hander needed only 91 pitches to record his second complete game of the season and No. 3 for his career.

Washington won Thursday night when Gonzalez pitched eight crisp innings in an 8-1 victory. Joey Votto homered for Cincinnati's only hit in the series opener.

"They were swinging early just like tonight," Zimmermann said. "I just saw that, and I figured if I did the same, I'd get the same results."

It was the first time the Reds managed just one hit in consecutive games since July 5-6, 1900, against Brooklyn, according to research by the Elias Sports Bureau that the team provided. The Houston Astros from Sept. 14-15, 2008, were the previous major league team with such a streak.

"My guys, if they attack hitters like the last two days, it's going to be a problem," Nationals manager Davey Johnson said. "I don't care, good-hitting team, bad-hitting team."

Xavier Paul led off the third with a single to center for Cincinnati's only hit off Zimmermann. The other baserunners came when Todd Frazier reached on an error by first baseman Adam LaRoche in the fifth and Corky Miller walked in the eighth.

"We had quite a few pitches to hit," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "We just didn't find any holes. We've just got to keep swinging. We didn't do a bunch of striking out, we put the ball in play. He was good tonight, but we didn't find any holes."

Johnson said Zimmermann earned the right to finish the game.

"Low pitch count, really went after them," Johnson said. "Never had any qualms at all about letting him (finish)."

Zimmermann admitted that he glanced at the scoreboard to see how many pitches he had thrown. He noticed he was at 60 after six, so he thought he could go on.

"I don't care about strikeouts. I don't want to walk anyone," Zimmermann said.

Homer Bailey (1-2) was nearly as good as Zimmermann, pitching seven crisp innings for the Reds. He allowed one run and six hits, struck out six and walked none.

The Nationals' only run came in the third. Bryce Harper tripled to right and scored on Jayson Werth's single to right.

Harper was able to enjoy two excellent pitching performances.

"It was incredible. That's what we expect from our pitchers. We're used to that," Harper said.

Zimmermann improved to 8-0 with a 3.02 ERA in his last 14 regular-season home starts.

The Reds have scored just four runs in the last four games.

"Things go in streaks and sometimes there's no explaining why," Baker said. "We went through this last year. There was a streak when you couldn't buy a run and another streak when you get all the runs you need or want, or even more than you want. Right now we're in that can't buy a run phase."

Crosby said Wednesday broken jaw will keep him out of Pittsburgh's playoff opener against the New York Islanders Wednesday night. Crosby hasn't played since taking an errant shot to the face in a game against the Islanders on March 30. He met with a doctor on Tuesday and while the doctor was pleased with Crosby's progress he still has not received clearance to play.

"He said everything looks good, he just wasn't prepared to let me play," Crosby said. "Obviously I would love to have the chance to play tonight but that's not the way it is and (I'll) make sure I'm ready when the time comes."

Crosby skated alongside his teammates on Wednesday morning then spent an additional 30 minutes on the ice getting extra work in. He said he has not been given a timetable for his return. Game 2 is Friday night.

"He didn't give me a date and I'm sure if he gives a date, I'd have pretty high expectations of that date," Crosby said. "I'm sure he's waiting until he feels comfortable."

The Penguins went 8-4 while playing without Crosby for the final quarter of the season and beat the Islanders in four of their five meetings this year.

Despite missing 12 games, Crosby still finished tied for third in the NHL scoring race with 56 points and he has torched the Islanders throughout his career, scoring 20 goals and dishing out 55 assists against the Islanders, the most points has against any team.

New York coach Jack Capuano thinks even without Crosby the star-laden Penguins remain one of the most dangerous teams in the league. In addition to reigning NHL MVP Evgeni Malkin, the Penguins added future Hall of Famer Jarome Iginla and veterans Jussi Jokinen, Brenden Morrow and Doug Murray at the trade deadline.

"Obviously again they've got a lot of depth," Capuano said.

MasterCard earned $766 million in the first three months of the year, up 12 percent from the same period a year ago, the company reported Wednesday. That worked out to $6.23 per share, beating the $6.18 per share expected by analysts polled by FactSet.

Revenue rose 8 percent to $1.9 billion, slightly less than the $1.93 billion forecast by financial analysts who follow the company.

CEO Ajay Banga said he was pleased that results met the company's expectations, "despite the mixed global economic environment."

The Purchase, N.Y., company does business all over the world, and its results are a window into how people are spending and how they're feeling about the economy on all different income levels.

MasterCard's results were helped by an increase in cross-border volumes, which measures how much customers spend in countries other than the one they live in. That can be a gauge for how affluent customers are faring. Those transactions also benefit the company, because it is able to charge more in fees for currency conversion and related services.

MasterCard is trying to elbow rival Visa out of the way for market share in the debit card business. Spending on MasterCard-branded debit cards rose more than spending on credit and charge cards.

MasterCard reported stronger growth outside the U.S. than at home. Purchases in Asia, the Middle East and Africa grew 20 percent over the year measured in U.S. dollars, 13 percent in Europe and almost 11 percent in Latin America. In the U.S., growth was just 4 percent.

MasterCard is focusing on developing countries, where most transactions are still done in cash. The company has been expanding in the region that includes Asia, the Middle East and Africa, and signed an agreement to "explore opportunities" in China. It's also spending on new technology to encourage customers to pay for purchases via phone.

In pre-market trading, MasterCard's stock fell $11.05 to $541.88, a decline of 2 percent.

LONDON, March 29 (Reuters) - Unprecedented levels of skill, intensity and endurance have transformed global sport into spectacular mass entertainment and handsomely rewarded its leading exponents.

Now that the euphoria of last year's acclaimed London Olympics has dissipated, however, a spate of troubling stories in the first quarter of 2013 show an altogether darker and more disturbing side to a glamorous, multi-billion-dollar industry.

In January, American cyclist Lance Armstrong admitted in a television interview that he had doped before each of his record seven Tour de France victories.

His confession after years of denial followed the United States Anti-Doping Agency's (USADA) decision to strip him of the title and accuse him of being at the centre of the "most sophisticated, professionalised and successful doping programme that sport has ever seen".

A report from Australia's top criminal intelligence unit linked doping in sport with money-laundering and match-fixing after a year-long investigation. Six leading rugby league clubs, from one of the country's four football codes in a sports-obsessed nation, confirmed they were under scrutiny.

And Spanish doctor Eufemiano Fuentes, on trial in Madrid for allegedly running a doping ring in cycling, said in his opening testimony that he also had clients in soccer, tennis, athletics and boxing.

Fuentes, who said outside the court this month that he might be willing to co-operate with anti-doping authorities, is appearing in court almost seven years after steroids and blood bags were seized in an investigation code-named Operation Puerto.

"The same people who are trafficking in steroids and encouraging athletes to cheat by doping are the ones who are engaged in illegal betting," said World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) director general David Howman.

"This is essentially money-laundering, bribery and corruption in relation to match-fixing and spot-fixing."

BLACK MARKETS

At a WADA media symposium in London in February, Howman said at least 25 percent of international sport was controlled by the underworld.

"The black markets supply a lot of pharmaceutical products before they are out on the white market," he said. "That's run by the criminal underworld, so a lot of the pharmaceutical stuff comes out in that way."

Rob Koehler, the director of education and programme development at WADA, told an anti-doping conference in London this month the drugs problem in sport reflected the problems of society as a whole.

"We are always trying to push the limit," he said. "Adults are cheating. Students are cheating, in fact they think they are smart if they don't get caught."

Koehler said one percent of the population as a whole was rich while the middle class was shrinking and the lower class growing. The position was similar in sport.

"Top athletes are making millions, some athletes make a modest living, most barely get by," he said. "But what some athletes used to make in their career they are now making in one year."

Doping's black heartland has traditionally been in the speed and strength sports of track and field, weightlifting and cycling.

But it has also become increasingly apparent that the nature of ball sports, which rely on a unique set of skills peculiar to their disciplines, has changed.

Baseball, with its explosion of home runs in the 1990s, is an obvious example and this year slugger Barry Bonds, the record holder for home runs, and pitcher Roger Clemens, a seven-times Cy Young winner, were not elected to the Hall of Fame.

WIDESPREAD DOPING

The pair, appearing on the ballot for the first time after waiting five years following their retirements, were linked with performance-enhancing drugs in the Mitchell report which detailed widespread doping in the sport.

Baseball is similar in nature to Twenty20 cricket, where strength as well as technique is necessary to repeatedly clear the boundaries. Rugby union players, who used to be a mixture of the big and the powerful and the small and the speedy, are now uniformly bulked up.

Tennis, as the five-set marathons now common in the men's game demonstrate, demands sustained power and endurance to an extent once unimaginable.

Even golfers, as the modern breed of players headed by Tiger Woods demonstrates, are now athletes working out in the gym as well as frequenting the driving range.

In England, the Football Association reacted to concerns expressed by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger about the possible use of EPO by announcing it would bring in testing for the blood booster, which was introduced into cycling in the 1990s.

"We have had some players come to us at Arsenal from other clubs abroad and their red blood cell count has been abnormally high. That kind of thing makes you wonder," Wenger said.

Wenger also called for blood testing in soccer, adding: "I don't think we do enough. It is very difficult for me to believe that you have 740 players in the World Cup and you come out with zero problems."

Roger Federer, a 17-times grand-slam tennis champion, also called for the introduction of biological passports, pioneered in cycling and subsequently introduced in athletics, which track changes in a competitor's blood profile which could be caused only by doping.

"A blood passport will be necessary as some substances can't be discovered right now but might in the future, and that risk of discovery can chase cheats away," the Swiss said.

"But there also should be more blood tests and out-of- competition controls in tennis."

WADA and its president John Fahey, whose six-year term ends this year, have never been busier and he told the London symposium there was no sign the bad news would end any time soon.

"As long as there is sporting competition there will be athletes who choose to cheat, and consequently a need to lead the fight against this global threat to sport's integrity," Fahey said.

"And, if the last eight months are anything to go by, that need is increasing in its urgency rather than receding." (Editing by Clare Fallon)

NAIROBI (Reuters) - Kenya's year inflation rate edged up to 4.14 percent in the year to April from 4.11 percent a month earlier, official data showed on Tuesday, raising the likelihood the central bank would leave its key lending rate on hold next week.

Policymakers held the Central Bank of Kenya's benchmark lending rate at 9.50 percent at their mid-March, saying they would assess the economy after the March presidential election. Analysts said a stable inflation rate could keep rates steady.

"Inflation has remained relatively stable so there is no real concern to change their stance," said Duncan Kinuthia, head of trading at Commercial Bank of Africa.

Prices of food and non-alcoholic drinks, which have a 36.04 percent weighting in Kenya's Consumer Price Index, jumped 1.85 percent month-on-month while housing and utility costs rose 0.31 percent.

Mark Bohlund, senior economist sub-Saharan Africa at IHS Global Insight, said the data strengthened his expectation the Central Bank Rate would be left unchanged when the Monetary Policy Committee meets next on May 6.

"While non-food and non-energy prices have been relatively contained in recent months, we expect a migration of price pressures into this category in the second half of the year to contribute to inflation rising back towards the double digits," Bohlund said.

The stronger shilling might mitigate some of the impact from import prices, he added.

In a statement published on Tuesday, the International Monetary Fund said the central bank should maintain its cautious policy stance but there was scope for further monetary easing.

The central bank had previously slashed 8.5 percentage points off the rate since July to promote growth.

The driver for Joe Gibbs Racing spoke out Thursday, one day after his team was slapped with some of the harshest penalties in NASCAR history because his race-winning car at Kansas last week failed post-race inspection.

The failure came because one of eight connecting rods in the engine was too light by 2.7 grams, according to Kenseth, who said the rods collectively weighed more than necessary by about 2.5 grams each.

"I think the penalties are grossly unfair," Kenseth said. "I think it's borderline shameful."

Kenseth was docked 50 driver points in the standings, two more than he earned for the victory. He said he's more upset about the penalties given to car owner Joe Gibbs and his crew chief, Jason Ratcliff.

Gibbs also was docked 50 points and suspended for six weeks during which he will earn no owner points, essentially taking the No. 20 car Kenseth drives out of contention for winning an owner's title.

Ratcliff was suspended for six weeks and fined $200,000.

The team is appealing the penalties.

Kenseth understands that a rule is a rule, but the part found to be too light was installed by Toyota Racing Development, which builds engines for JGR at a shop in Costa Mesa, Calif., Kenseth said.

"They show up on a truck or an airplane, get taken out and bolted in the car," he said.

TDR president Lee White said Wednesday night the company took full responsibility for the mistake and confirmed that JGR had nothing to do with it. He also said the lighter part gave Kenseth no competitive advantage.

"There was no intent. It was a mistake. JGR had no control over it," Kenseth said with anger. "Certainly to crush Joe Gibbs like that and say they can't win an owner's championship with the 20 this year ... I just can't wrap my arms around that. It just blows me away. And the same for Jason Ratcliff.

"I don't feel bad for myself at all, but for Jason and Joe, I couldn't feel any worse. There's no more reputable, honest, hard-working guys with good reputations moreso than those two. I feel really bad for them."

Kenseth said he doesn't care that the penalty may affect his reputation as a clean racer. He said anyone with knowledge of the situation knows he and his team had nothing to do with it and gained no advantage. He understands that NASCAR has to police the sport vigilantly, but said "the penalty is way over the top for" the infraction.

He's not alone and not the only driver hoping the appeals panel provides some relief.

Defending Sprint Cup champion Brad Keselowski's team for Penske Racing was punished last week after NASCAR said it found unapproved parts in the rear suspension of Keselowski's and Joey Logano's cars at Texas. NASCAR took 25 points away from each driver, fined the crew chiefs $100,000 each and suspended seven Penske employees for six races.

Penske Racing's appeal is scheduled for May 1.

Most drivers, Keselowski guessed, sympathize with Kenseth.

"I certainly feel bad for him because at the end of the day, Matt doesn't put together the car and, heck, in this particular situation his team didn't even put together the engine, so it's a difficult situation at best," Keselowski said Thursday at Richmond International Raceway, adding that he also understands that "from NASCAR's side, they know that if you give an inch, you've got to give a mile."

In the end, said Keselowski, "it's just a question of whether the penalty fits the crime."

Later, Kenseth was on the track Thursday practicing in injured JGR teammate Denny Hamlin's Late Model car, which he agreed to drive in Thursday night's Short Track Showdown for Hamlin's charity.

He also was hoping to put the controversy of the past few days behind him, hopefully by Friday.

"My excitement for tonight is at an all-time low," he said. "It just is right now."

Kasatonov, 53, had a stellar playing career winning two Olympic (1984, 1988) and five world titles with the all-conquering Soviet national team in the 1980s.

After retiring in 1996, the St Petersburg native has held various jobs in the game before being appointed general manager of wealthy Continental Hockey League team SKA St Petersburg two years ago.

"We all know what the Olympics mean, what kind of interest it creates worldwide. It's the biggest prize in hockey and I just couldn't turn down this offer," Kasatonov told local media.

"My job would be to talk to players, including those from the NHL, but the head coach will always have the final word."

Kasatonov's appointment was confirmed on the Russian ice hockey federation's website (www.fhr.ru) and came after consultation with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov.

The Russians, who won the last of their eight Olympic titles in 1992, will try to reclaim the gold on home ice in Sochi.

Along with his defensive partner Vyacheslav Fetisov and forwards Vladimir Krutov, Igor Larionov and Sergei Makarov, Kasatonov was part of the famous unit dubbed the KLM Line.

Together they won numerous trophies for the national team and CSKA Moscow before joining the National Hockey League just before the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Kasatonov played three full seasons (1991-93) with the Devils and also had brief spells with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, St Louis Blues and Boston Bruins before returning to Russia.
